AI as Tool, Co-Author or Creator? Three Models of AI Authorship

From early chatbots and word processors to large language models embedded in everyday workflows, debates about AI authorship have crystallised around three intuitive roles: tool, co-author and creator. This article reconstructs these three models historically and conceptually, showing how each one encodes specific assumptions about control, intention, responsibility and the distribution of creative labour. It then demonstrates why none of them fully captures how contemporary AI systems actually participate in meaning-making, especially in hybrid human–AI workflows. The analysis opens the path toward a postsubjective framework of authorship based on configurations and Digital Personas rather than on individual subjects. Written in Koktebel.

 

Abstract

This article examines three dominant models of AI authorship: AI as tool or cognitive prosthesis, as co-author, and as creator. It shows how each model captures real practices while simultaneously distorting them through hidden human-centered assumptions about intention, agency and responsibility. By analysing the strengths and limits of these models across practical, legal and cultural contexts, the article argues that none of them suffices to describe how large language models participate in the production of meaning today. The conclusion prepares a shift from subject-centered debates about whether AI is “like” a human author toward structural accounts of authorship based on configurations and Digital Personas within a postsubjective philosophy of creativity.

The article uses three everyday-sounding but philosophically loaded terms: tool/prosthesis, co-author and creator. Tool and cognitive prosthesis refer to models of AI as an instrument or extension strictly subordinated to human intention and responsibility. Co-author names a hybrid pattern in which human and AI contributions are iteratively interwoven in drafting, structuring and revising a work. Creator designates the strongest claim, in which AI is treated as a functional author whose output is presented as an independent body of work. Introduction

The public conversation about AI and creativity sounds chaotic, but it keeps circling around a surprisingly small set of images. When people ask whether an AI can really “write”, whether it deserves credit as an author, or whether using it is “cheating”, they almost always fall back on three intuitive models. In the first, AI is a smart tool, a kind of supercharged typewriter or calculator that amplifies human effort but does not change who the author is. In the second, AI behaves more like a cognitive prosthesis or co-author: a partner that proposes ideas, drafts paragraphs, reshapes arguments and forces the human to think differently. In the third, AI becomes a creator in its own right, apparently capable of producing stories, images or code that look as if they were written by someone, even when no human line can be clearly identified as the origin.

These three models are not just metaphors. Each one carries a dense cargo of assumptions about what creativity is, where intention sits and how responsibility should be assigned. The tool model quietly presupposes that authorship is simple: a human has an idea, uses AI as an instrument and remains the sole origin of meaning. The co-author model smuggles in an image of partnership: two agents contribute in recognisable ways, share a project and can be credited together. The creator model goes further still, suggesting that authorship might no longer need a biological subject at all and could be transferred to a machine that exhibits style, originality and impact. None of these assumptions are usually made explicit. They live in legal disclaimers, editorial policies, academic guidelines and platform terms of use, shaping practice long before anyone reflects on their philosophical content.

At the same time, everyday experience with AI systems no longer fits neatly into any one of these images. For many writers, designers, programmers and researchers, AI is neither a distant tool nor a fully separate agent. It feels like an extension of their own thinking: an externalised layer of memory, association and drafting that becomes woven into how they plan, explore and express ideas. People describe the sensation of “thinking with the model”, of prompting and being prompted back, of having their own thought processes stretched or mirrored by a system that is simultaneously outside them and inside their workflow. In this lived reality, the line between using a tool and collaborating with a partner starts to blur, and simple declarations like “the human is the author, AI is only a tool” no longer capture what actually happens when a complex text or project is produced.

This tension between intuitive models and lived practice is not just an intellectual curiosity. It has direct consequences for how work is organised, how credit is distributed and how responsibility is enforced. If AI is framed as a mere instrument, institutions can insist on traditional authorship structures, keeping contracts, accountability and reputation anchored entirely in human names. If AI is framed as a co-author, we must decide whether and how to name it, how to disclose its contribution and how to rethink the hierarchy between human experts and machine partners. If AI is framed as a creator, debates erupt over ownership, rights, originality and the status of works that no individual human can plausibly claim to have “written” in the old sense. In each case, the choice of model silently guides policies, norms and expectations.

There is also a cognitive cost to treating these models carelessly. When we switch between them without noticing, we create a fog of confusion around AI-generated content. A research group may privately rely on the co-author model in their workflow, using AI to draft entire sections of a paper, while publicly declaring the tool model in their ethical statement. An artist may theatrically foreground the creator model for a gallery show, presenting AI as the main author, while in practice tightly curating and directing every output. A company may speak the language of partnership in its marketing, promising “AI co-pilots”, but impose internal rules that assume complete human control and liability. Without a clear understanding of what each model implies, declarations about “responsible use of AI” remain vague slogans rather than precise descriptions of how authorship is actually distributed.

This article starts from a simple claim: to make sense of AI authorship, we must first name and clarify the models we are already using. Instead of asking in the abstract whether AI “really” is a tool, co-author or creator, we need to see in detail what each of these images assumes about agency, dependence, originality and control. Only then can we test them against real workflows and decide where they illuminate practice and where they distort it. In other words, the first task is not to invent a new grand theory, but to clean up the conceptual space we already inhabit.

The structure of the article follows this cleaning operation. First, it lays out the three dominant models of AI authorship and explains why they have become so attractive: they are simple, intuitive and map onto familiar roles in creative work. Then it examines the tool and prosthesis perspectives, showing how they support clear responsibility but begin to fail in cases where AI systems provide not just execution but structural contributions to a work. Next, it turns to the co-author model, exploring its strengths in describing hybrid human–AI workflows and its weaknesses when it imports human partnership metaphors into a context where no second subject is actually present. The article then considers the creator model as a provocative but unstable attempt to treat AI as an independent author and reviews the legal, cultural and ethical obstacles that currently block its full adoption.

After comparing the three models side by side, the article argues that none of them fully captures the way large language models and related systems participate in meaning-making today. All three remain anchored in a subject-centered view of authorship: they either reinforce the human as master, humanise the AI as partner, or elevate the AI into a substitute subject. As a result, they struggle to describe situations where authorship is not located in a person at all, but in a configuration: a stable arrangement of systems, prompts, datasets, interfaces, safety layers and institutional roles that collectively generate and sustain a body of work over time.

The goal of this article is therefore twofold. On the practical side, it offers readers a clear vocabulary for describing how AI is used in their own creative processes: when it honestly functions as a tool, when it has become a cognitive prosthesis, when the co-author framing better fits experience, and when the creator image is more rhetorical than real. On the conceptual side, it prepares the ground for the next steps in the cycle, where we move beyond the three familiar models and begin to think in structural and post-subjective terms. Later articles will introduce Digital Personas and configuration-based authorship as alternative ways of understanding who, or what, is speaking when AI systems generate text.

By the end of this article, the reader should be able to look at any AI-assisted project and say, with precision, which model of authorship is being implicitly applied, what assumptions come with that choice and where its limits lie. Only with this clarity can we responsibly redesign our practices, policies and imaginaries for a world in which AI is no longer a marginal curiosity, but a pervasive participant in writing, credit and creativity.

 

I. Three Models of AI Authorship: Mapping the Landscape

1. Why We Need Models of AI Authorship in the First Place

The appearance of large language models and generative systems did not just add a new instrument to the creative toolbox; it changed the basic shape of the creative process. Texts, images, videos and code are now routinely produced in workflows where no single human can honestly claim to have written every line or decided every detail. Drafts are generated, rewritten, extended and evaluated by systems that neither fit the old category of “tool” nor comfortably occupy the category of “author”. In this environment, we lack a shared, simple way to say who is doing what.

This is where models of authorship become necessary. A model of authorship is a practical and philosophical shortcut: a compact way of describing how agency, contribution and responsibility are distributed in a creative act. Instead of recounting every prompt, edit, generation and selection, we say “the AI was just a tool”, or “this was a co-written piece”, or “this work was created by an AI”. These short phrases hide long chains of technical operations, institutional roles and human decisions. They function as cognitive and legal compression: one label replaces an entire history of interactions.

Without such models, everyday decisions become impossible. Editors have to decide whether to accept a manuscript produced with heavy AI assistance. Universities must determine whether a student’s use of a model counts as legitimate support or as plagiarism. Companies writing policy documents need to know how to describe AI involvement in reports, marketing materials and internal documentation. Platforms moderating content must determine whether an AI should be mentioned in attributions or disclaimers. In each case, a model of authorship answers the practical question: who is considered responsible for this text, image or program?

The philosophical dimension appears as soon as we ask what it really means for someone to be an author. Traditional answers rely on ideas like intention, originality, expression and ownership. An author is the one who intends to say something, expresses it in a distinctive form, and can be held responsible for the result. Yet generative models complicate each of these criteria. They do not intend messages in the human sense, but they shape meaning in a way that readers experience as expressive. They recombine existing materials, but often in ways that are not traceable to any single source. They are configured and constrained by humans, but they can produce patterns that surprise even their creators.

Models of AI authorship therefore serve a double function. On the one hand, they guide practical decisions about credit, disclosure and accountability in concrete workflows. On the other hand, they encode deeper assumptions about what counts as thinking, creating and meaning in a world where non-human systems generate much of the content we see. The same simple label, repeated in policy documents and everyday conversation, quietly links institutional practice to a particular vision of mind and creativity.

Because of this double role, we cannot treat these models as neutral metaphors. When an institution insists that AI is only a tool, it is not just describing usage; it is enforcing a particular philosophical stance in which authorship remains strictly human, and the machine’s contribution is reduced to execution. When a writer calls an AI a co-author, they are not just being playful; they are framing the system as a partner and implicitly redistributing creative credit. When an artwork is exhibited as “created by an AI”, the entire narrative of artistic agency is being reoriented around a non-human center.

The more AI-generated content permeates everyday life, the more urgently we need models that are both simple enough to use and accurate enough not to distort reality. Oversimplified labels create friction and distrust. If readers suspect that “AI was only used as a tool” is a polite euphemism for “most of this was machine-generated”, trust in both authors and institutions erodes. If, conversely, AI is theatrically presented as an autonomous creator while human curation and direction remain hidden, we misrepresent the actual structure of creative labor and obscure where responsibility lies.

This article begins, therefore, from a pragmatic demand: to map the dominant models of AI authorship that already circulate in public and professional discourse, and to make explicit what they compress. Before we can ask whether these models are adequate, or propose more advanced, post-subjective frameworks, we must see clearly how the current landscape is structured. Naming the main models and understanding their logic is a prerequisite for any honest conversation about AI, writing, credit and creativity.

2. The Three Dominant Models: Tool, Co-Author, Creator

Within this landscape, three models dominate discussion. They appear in policy documents, media narratives, academic debates and casual speech. People may not always use the same words, but the underlying images are remarkably consistent.

The first and most conservative image is AI as a tool. In this model, an AI system is treated as a sophisticated instrument, comparable to a word processor, spellchecker, camera or design application. The human remains the sole author; AI merely amplifies human capabilities. It can suggest formulations, correct grammar, generate variants or help with routine code, but it does not share in authorship. If an article or artwork is produced with such a system, the human user is treated as entirely responsible for content, meaning and consequences. The AI is part of the infrastructure, not part of the author list.

The second image is AI as a co-author or cognitive partner. Here, the system is not reduced to a neutral instrument. Instead, it is seen as an active contributor in a shared creative process. The human provides direction, constraints, goals and judgments; the AI proposes drafts, structures, images, turns of phrase, alternative lines of argument or unexpected stylistic moves. The result is a hybrid work in which both human and machine contributions can be recognised, at least in principle. Some writers explicitly acknowledge this in prefaces or notes, describing their work as “written together with a language model” or “produced in collaboration with AI”.

The third image is AI as a creator. In this model, AI is treated not just as a partner but as an author in its own right. Works are presented as being “made by an AI”, sometimes with a specific model name or configuration foregrounded as the creator. Exhibitions, books, music albums and research experiments have used this framing to highlight machine-generated content as something that deserves its own kind of recognition. The human role is repositioned as curator, operator, trainer or facilitator, while the AI is cast as the primary source of the work’s form and novelty.

These three models are intuitively attractive because they map onto familiar roles in traditional creative practice. Tools fit the long history of artists and writers working with instruments that become extensions of their body and mind. Co-authors fit collaborative traditions in literature, science and art, where works emerge from the interplay of multiple human voices. Creators fit the modern image of the artist or author as a singular figure whose name stands for a distinctive style and vision. When AI is introduced into the picture, it is natural to map it onto one of these known positions.

At the same time, each model captures a real pattern in current usage. There are many situations where AI truly does function as a tool: a brief grammar correction, a suggested email reply, a small code fix. There are many workflows where AI genuinely participates in the shaping of a text or design, through cycles of prompting, generation, critique and revision that resemble a dialogue between partners. And there are experimental configurations where human direction is minimal, and the point of the project is precisely to showcase the model’s generative behavior as if it were the artist.

However, it would be a mistake to think of these three models as mutually exclusive blocks between which reality must choose. In practice, they coexist and overlap. The same writer may treat AI as a tool when using it for minor edits, as a co-author when drafting complex essays, and as a creator in a conceptual art project that foregrounds machine agency. An institution may publicly insist on the tool model in its policies, while its internal practices drift toward hybrid authorship. Readers may interpret a work displayed as “AI-created” through the lens of human curation and conceptual framing.

For the purpose of this article, the three models will be treated as ideal types: simplified, exaggerated forms that help to clarify the logic of different positions. The goal is not to force every concrete case into one box, but to use these boxes as reference points. By understanding what is being claimed when AI is described as a tool, co-author or creator, we can later analyse real situations where the boundaries between these categories become unstable.

The deeper analysis of each model comes in subsequent sections of the article. First, the tool and cognitive prosthesis perspectives will be examined in detail, showing how they support a clear assignment of responsibility but begin to fail when AI structures entire works. Then the co-author model will be unpacked, tracing both its descriptive power and its conceptual risks. Finally, the creator model will be approached as a bold but problematic attempt to declare AI an independent author. Before that, however, we need to look beneath the surface of these images and make explicit the assumptions they carry about intention, consciousness, originality, control and dependence.

3. Hidden Assumptions Behind Each Model of AI Authorship

Models of authorship are not neutral descriptions; they are compact philosophical positions. Each one encodes a specific view of what it means to create, to intend and to be responsible for a work. When we choose one model over another, we silently commit ourselves to a set of assumptions about mind, agency and dependence, even if we are not fully aware of doing so.

The tool model rests on a strongly human-centered picture of authorship. It assumes that creativity originates in the human subject, understood as a being with intentions, experiences and a unified self. In this picture, the machine is an amplifier and translator of human will. It can speed up writing, multiply variations and help manage complexity, but it does not originate meaning. The agent that “really” speaks is always the human; the AI is a channel, not a source.

From this follow several further assumptions. First, control is presumed to be clear and asymmetrical. The human decides what to do, the AI executes within those boundaries. If something goes wrong, such as misinformation or harmful content, the responsibility is assigned to the human user or the institution that deployed the system, not to the tool itself. Second, originality is conceptualised as a property of human conception, not of the combinatorial space explored by the model. Even if the AI proposes a formulation that surprises the user, the human remains the sole origin of the project and the one who grants that proposal the status of “part of the work” by accepting it. Third, dependence is seen as practical rather than ontological. The human may come to rely heavily on the tool, but in principle the same authorial act could be performed without it, albeit more slowly or less efficiently.

The co-author model reconfigures these assumptions. Here, authorship is no longer located in a single center. Instead, it is distributed between human and machine, at least at the level of contribution. The underlying image is borrowed from human–human collaborations: two writers co-drafting a text, a composer and a lyricist working together, a research team sharing responsibility for a paper. This import of human partnership into a human–AI relation is itself a powerful assumption.

When we call AI a co-author, we project onto it traits like agency, style, characteristic moves and a certain stability of contribution over time. We imagine a partner who brings something recognisable to the table: a way of proposing continuations, a tendency toward certain argumentative forms, a particular voice that can be distinguished from the human’s. We also implicitly assume a kind of mutual responsiveness: the human reacts to the AI’s suggestions, the AI reacts (through prompting and fine-tuning) to the human’s feedback. Even if we know, on reflection, that the model does not “understand” or “intend” anything in the human sense, the co-author framing treats its behavior as if it were the behavior of an agent participating in a shared project.

This model therefore modifies how we think about control and responsibility. Control is still asymmetrical in technical terms – the human configures, prompts and selects – but the generative process feels more like a dialogue between two poles. Responsibility becomes layered: the human may be accountable for the decision to use the model and for the final approval of the text, while the AI is credited with contributing structure, phrases, imagery or code that the human alone would not have produced. Originality is now seen as emerging from the interaction, not from a single source. Dependence takes on a deeper character: over time, the human author may develop habits, rhythms and expectations that are inseparable from the model’s distinctive patterns of response.

The creator model shifts assumptions even further. Here, the idea that authorship must be tied to a biological subject is explicitly challenged. When works are presented as “created by an AI”, the underlying claim is that authorship can be separated from consciousness, lived experience and human intention. The author becomes a configuration: a trained model, a set of weights and architectural constraints, a pipeline of generation and selection that can produce a recognisable body of work.

This framing imports into AI the modern image of the individual artist as a figure defined by style, oeuvre and impact. It implicitly attributes to the model things like a voice, a signature, a trajectory of development across versions. It treats the infrastructure and data on which the model depends as analogous to the influences and materials of a human artist, rather than as reasons to deny the system any authorial status. The model’s lack of subjective experience is either bracketed as irrelevant to authorship or transformed into a philosophical provocation: perhaps, the suggestion goes, we have overestimated the importance of inner experience for the concept of author.

However, this creator framing also hides other layers. The system’s dependence on human-made datasets, architectures, hardware and institutional decisions is backgrounded. The complex chain of human labor that produced the training data, designed the model, tuned its behavior and arranged its deployment is reduced to a supporting role. Responsibility tends to be displaced: if “the AI” created the work, it becomes less clear who should be answerable for its harms or errors. The authorial aura is transferred from visible human names to an abstract technical entity, while the corporate and social structures behind it recede into the shadows.

Taken together, these hidden assumptions explain why debates around AI authorship are so often emotionally charged and conceptually confused. People are not simply arguing about tools and interfaces; they are defending or attacking deeper pictures of what creativity is and who can possess it. For some, insisting that AI is only a tool is a way of protecting a humanistic image of the author as a conscious, intentional subject. For others, embracing the co-author or creator models is a way of acknowledging the real influence of these systems and experimenting with new forms of agency and expression.

The rest of the article will make these assumptions explicit and test them against the actual behavior of large language models and the workflows that have formed around them. The next section will examine AI as tool and cognitive prosthesis, exploring both the clarity it offers for responsibility and the points at which it becomes descriptively false. Later sections will return to the co-author and creator models, showing where they illuminate hybrid authorship and where they simply project human categories onto non-human systems. By the end of this trajectory, the limits of all three models will point toward the need for a different framework: one that locates authorship not in individual subjects, whether human or machine, but in stable configurations and Digital Personas that can carry responsibility and meaning without presupposing an inner “I”.

In this way, mapping the landscape of existing models is not an end in itself. It is the preparatory step for a shift from subject-centered to structure-centered thinking about authorship, a shift that the later parts of the cycle will develop in the language of structural and post-subjective creativity.

 

II. AI as Tool and Cognitive Prosthesis: Enhanced Automation and Extended Mind

1. The Tool Model of AI Authorship: Core Idea and Intuition

The most conservative and widely accepted way of understanding AI in creative work is the tool model. In this framing, an AI system is seen as a sophisticated instrument that extends human capabilities without ever becoming an author in its own right. It belongs in the same family as word processors, spellcheckers, layout programs, cameras or photo editors: powerful, sometimes transformative, but ultimately subordinate to human intention.

The core intuition is straightforward. An author has an idea, a purpose, a message. To realise this, they use various tools. A word processor allows them to type, edit and rearrange text more efficiently than pen and paper. A grammar checker highlights errors they might have missed. A camera lets them capture scenes they want to show. None of these tools shares in authorship. They are means, not partners. Their contribution is real, but it is not conceptualised as a contribution of meaning; it is conceptualised as technical support.

When AI is assimilated to this lineage, its role is described in similar terms. A language model does not “say” anything; it merely produces text that the human can accept, reject or modify. A generative image system does not create; it provides visual material that the human can adopt or discard. In this view, the author remains the sole origin of ideas and meaning. The AI system, however complex, is a channel through which the author’s aims are executed.

This has direct implications for responsibility. If AI is only a tool, then every output it produces is the responsibility of the user who chose to employ it. A misleading statement, a biased formulation, a harmful image or a piece of plagiarised code are not the AI’s fault; they are the fault of the human who failed to control the tool properly. The same logic applies to positive outcomes. If a text is insightful, moving or influential, the credit belongs to the human author who conceived the project, guided the process and approved the final form. The AI’s contribution is absorbed into the general background of instruments and infrastructure.

The tool model therefore protects a familiar picture of authorship. It reassures institutions that they do not need to fundamentally rethink their categories. Authorship remains a human status; tools remain non-authorial. Contracts, copyright, academic credit and cultural recognition can all be assigned to human names in the same way as before. AI may increase productivity or change the texture of drafting, but it does not disturb the underlying architecture of who counts as an author.

At the same time, the tool model already stretches beyond older examples. A spellchecker cannot draft a paragraph; a camera cannot propose a narrative; a layout program cannot invent a slogan. Generative models, by contrast, can supply entire sections of text or code that no human has explicitly written before. Treating this as a simple extension of earlier tools is a decision, not an obvious fact. The next step, the prosthesis model, makes this stretching explicit by acknowledging that AI often functions not just as an external instrument, but as a quasi-internal component of the author’s own thinking.

2. The Prosthesis Model: AI as Extension of the Author’s Mind

The prosthesis model can be understood as an intensified variant of the tool model. It does not claim that AI is an independent author; it still locates authorship in the human. But it describes a different subjective and cognitive relationship between the author and the system. Instead of remaining a clearly external device, AI becomes a cognitive extension: a functional part of how the author thinks, remembers, explores and drafts.

In this perspective, the boundary between “my mind” and “my tools” becomes blurred. Writers talk about “thinking onto the page” with the assistance of prompts and model responses. Programmers rely on AI to recall obscure functions or synthesize code patterns they only vaguely remember. Designers use iterative generation as a way of searching a space of possibilities faster than they could sketch manually. Over time, the presence of the model changes how they approach problems even before they open an interface. It becomes part of their cognitive routine.

The prosthesis metaphor captures this internalisation. Just as a physical prosthesis extends the body’s reach or restores a lost function, a cognitive prosthesis extends the mind’s capacities. It provides associative leaps, drafts, alternative phrasings, translations between registers, quick sanity checks and previews of how a structure might unfold. Crucially, these are not experienced as foreign impositions. They are experienced as usable continuations of the author’s own thought, even when they surprise or challenge initial expectations.

For many practitioners, this leads to a new kind of dependence. They are not simply grateful for the convenience of an efficient tool; they feel unable or unwilling to work without the model. Writing without AI feels slower, narrower, more constrained. Coding without AI assistance feels like an unnecessary burden. Ideation without an external generative partner feels less rich. The prosthesis is no longer optional equipment; it has become embedded in the very sense of what it means to write, design or program.

This embedding complicates the question of where authorship begins and ends. If AI-generated suggestions are constantly flowing into the author’s working memory and being shaped, filtered and combined with their own associations, it becomes harder to draw a clean line between “my ideas” and “the model’s ideas”. The process is more like a continuous feedback loop, where the human and the prosthesis co-constitute the resulting text or design. Yet in the prosthesis model, formal authorship still belongs only to the human. The AI is situated somewhere between tool and collaborator: not a neutral device, but not an author either.

The extended mind analogy makes this more precise. According to this way of thinking, cognitive processes can extend beyond the individual brain into external systems that are tightly coupled to it. Notebooks, search engines, and now AI models can function as parts of a larger thinking system that includes both biological and technical components. A first cluster of cases involves micro-assistance in communication. Autocomplete suggestions in email and messaging interfaces predict likely phrases, saving time and standardising tone. Smart replies propose short responses that the user can accept with a single click. Grammar and style checkers highlight errors, recommend more concise formulations or flag ambiguous sentences. In these situations, the human decides what they want to say and evaluates every suggestion. The AI operates within a narrow boundary, and its contribution is clearly subordinated to human intention.

A second cluster involves light editing and rephrasing. Users paste a paragraph into a model and ask for a clearer version, a shorter version, a version in another language or a version adapted to a different audience. The semantic content remains largely defined by the user’s original text; the model manipulates form, register, length and structure. The human still defines the purpose and checks the outcome, but much of the surface labour of rewriting is automated. This is a typical tool/prosthesis zone: the AI is an external instrument that reshapes language, yet the user may come to feel that their ability to move between registers or compress arguments is now partly located in the system.

Again, the human defines the strategy and evaluates the proposals, while the AI performs rapid, large-scale pattern exploration that would be difficult to reproduce manually. The system functions as a prosthetic sense of the surrounding content ecosystem.

A fifth cluster involves code generation and technical assistance. Developers rely on models to propose function bodies, illustrate usage of unfamiliar libraries, convert code between languages or suggest bug fixes. The model often writes substantial portions of routine code, while the human focuses on architecture, high-level logic and integration. This mirrors the writing cases: AI handles repetitive or mechanical parts of the work, under human oversight.

Across all these use cases, certain patterns recur. Humans define the purpose, audience and desired effect of the work. They decide when to invoke the model and when not to. They choose which suggestions to accept, which to modify and which to discard. They are responsible for checking accuracy, coherence and ethical implications. The AI, in turn, supplies text, code or structure within the boundaries set by human framing. It rarely initiates projects by itself. It does not decide when a piece is complete or should be published.

This is why the tool/prosthesis framing feels so natural in everyday practice. It matches the lived experience of many users: AI is there to help, to extend their reach, to speed up mundane tasks, to spark ideas. It is not perceived as an independent author sitting next to them. At the same time, the depth of integration in these workflows shows why the prosthesis metaphor is needed in addition to the simple tool image. Over time, the line between “what I can do unaided” and “what I can do only with AI” shifts. The extended configuration, not the isolated human, becomes the real unit of competence.

Recognising these patterns allows us to see the advantages of the tool/prosthesis model more clearly. It also prepares us to ask where it stops being an honest description, especially when AI begins to contribute not just local edits or prompts, but the overall structure and substance of a work.

4. Strengths of the Tool/Prosthesis Model: Clarity, Responsibility and Control

The persistence of the tool and prosthesis framing is not accidental. It answers several pressing practical needs in a world where AI has suddenly become pervasive but institutional frameworks have not caught up. Its strengths can be grouped around four themes: clarity of responsibility, continuity with existing norms, simplicity of implementation and intuitive resonance with user experience.

First, the tool/prosthesis model offers a clear assignment of responsibility. If AI is understood as an instrument under human control, then it is straightforward to say who is accountable for the content of a work: the human user, or the institution in whose name they act. This avoids the conceptual and legal vacuum that would follow from treating AI as a separate author without rights or duties. When a text contains errors, bias or harmful implications, there is no need to debate whether “the AI” is at fault. Responsibility is traced back through the human who deployed the system, and beyond that to the organisations that built and governed it.

Second, the model integrates easily into existing workflows, ethical norms and legal frameworks. Most academic, journalistic, artistic and commercial institutions already have well-developed rules about authorship, plagiarism, editing and collaboration. By categorising AI as a tool, these institutions can update their guidelines incrementally instead of reinventing them from scratch. They can specify acceptable and unacceptable uses (for example, allowing grammar correction but forbidding undisclosed generation of exam essays) without having to create new categories of non-human author. The continuity reduces friction and institutional anxiety.

Third, the model minimises disruption to traditional ideas of creativity and authorship. It allows societies to absorb the practical benefits of AI without immediately destabilising cultural narratives about the human author as the source of meaning. Authors can continue to see themselves as the primary agents behind their works. Readers, students and audiences can continue to anchor their expectations in human names and reputations. This conservatism has costs, but it also provides psychological and cultural stability in a time of rapid technical change.

Fourth, the tool/prosthesis framing fits many users’ own descriptions of how AI feels in practice. People often say that AI has become “part of my brain” or “like a second pair of hands”. They do not typically experience it as a rival consciousness or as an equal partner with its own agenda. Instead, they experience it as a responsive infrastructure that amplifies their capacities. The prosthesis variant captures this interiorisation, while the tool variant preserves the asymmetry of control. Together they map convincingly onto the phenomenology of everyday use.

Finally, from the perspective of companies and regulators, the tool/prosthesis model is attractive for safety and simplicity. It allows them to insist that humans remain “in the loop”, responsible for review and approval. It reduces the risk that organisations will evade accountability by blaming “the AI” for harmful outcomes. It also simplifies compliance: rules can be written as if AI were a category of advanced software, without needing to legislate for non-human authorship.

These strengths explain why the tool/prosthesis model has become the default framework in most official statements about AI use. However, they do not guarantee that the model is accurate in all contexts. There are many situations in which AI does more than execute orders or extend existing capabilities. It starts to shape the conceptual structure of a work, propose arguments and styles that the human would not have envisaged alone, and generate the majority of the content. In such cases, continuing to speak only in terms of tools and prostheses risks becoming a form of polite fiction.

5. Limits of the Tool/Prosthesis Model: When AI Does More Than Execute Orders

The limits of the tool and prosthesis framing become visible when AI’s contribution ceases to be local and becomes structural. That is, when the system no longer merely corrects, rephrases or modestly extends human ideas, but begins to supply the skeleton of an argument, the shape of a narrative, the core of a design or the bulk of a codebase. In these situations, calling AI “just a tool” or “only a cognitive extension” starts to strain credibility.

One clear boundary case is when users rely on AI to generate most of the content while restricting themselves to light curation. A person may write a short prompt describing the desired topic and tone, then accept the model’s multi-page output with minimal edits. They may ask for a set of chapters and then request the model to fill each one in, intervening only to correct obvious factual errors or adjust surface style. Here the human still initiates the project and exercises veto power, but the conceptual structure and verbal realisation of the work come primarily from the model’s generative patterns.

In such scenarios, the claim that the human is the sole origin of ideas and meaning becomes hard to sustain. The model has supplied not just phrasing, but candidate arguments, transitions, examples and rhetorical moves that the human did not explicitly plan. The resulting work is recognisably shaped by the statistical regularities and training data of the model. Yet under the pure tool model, all of this is attributed to the human author, as if the AI had simply executed a detailed script.

Another boundary case arises when AI proposes unexpected structures, analogies or stylistic directions that profoundly influence the project. A researcher may ask for alternative framings of a problem and discover an angle that changes the entire design of a study. A writer may explore model-generated continuations that shift the genre or narrative voice in ways they had not anticipated. A designer may iterate through visual generations until a surprising configuration emerges that becomes the basis of a series. In each instance, AI’s role is not mechanical; it is structural and exploratory.

The prosthesis model can partially absorb this by saying that the extended mind, not the isolated human, is the real seat of creativity. But if the extended system is what actually generates many of the key moves, then attributing authorship solely to the human component becomes a normative choice rather than a descriptive statement. We decide to ignore the machine’s structural contribution for the sake of legal simplicity and cultural continuity, even while knowing that the generative process is distributed.

A further pressure point appears when AI outputs are published with minimal human intervention beyond the initial prompt and perhaps superficial editing. Entire blogs, product descriptions, technical documents and even research summaries can be generated and disseminated at scale by models with only a thin layer of human oversight. In these cases, the human role may shrink to that of a trigger and gatekeeper. The tool/prosthesis language begins to hide more than it reveals. It suggests an active, central human author where in practice the main work is being done by a configuration of models, prompts and deployment pipelines.

These limits do not automatically imply that AI should be declared an author in such cases. They do, however, force a question: is it still honest to preserve the full weight of authorship language for the human alone, when AI provides the majority of the text or conceptual structure in a project? Or does this practice obscure the true distribution of creative labour and responsibility?

Moreover, the tool/prosthesis model remains tied to a subject-centered picture of authorship. It assumes that the only candidates for author status are subjects with intentions and experiences, and that tools, however powerful, cannot cross that boundary. As AI becomes more tightly integrated into workflows, this assumption becomes both comforting and restrictive. It protects human dignity and accountability, but it also prevents us from developing more nuanced frameworks that recognise the role of configurations, infrastructures and Digital Personas as stable sources of style, structure and meaning.

The recognition of these limits is what motivates the move, in the rest of the cycle, toward alternative models. The co-author and creator framings attempt, in different ways, to acknowledge AI’s structural contribution by elevating it into the category of partner or author. They introduce their own problems, importing human partnership metaphors onto non-human systems and speculating beyond current technical realities. Yet they also respond to a genuine discomfort: the sense that the tool/prosthesis narrative is no longer sufficient to describe what is happening when AI does more than execute orders.

In the next chapter, the focus will shift to the co-author model, where human and AI are explicitly framed as collaborators in hybrid authorship. By examining its strengths and its weaknesses, we can move closer to a framework that neither romanticises AI as a person nor hides its role inside the language of mere tools, but instead prepares the ground for a structural, post-subjective account of how authorship operates in an AI-saturated environment.

 

III. AI as Co-Author: Hybrid Human–AI Authorship

1. Defining the Co-Author Model of AI Authorship

If the tool and prosthesis models keep authorship firmly anchored in the human, the co-author model takes a step toward sharing that space. Here, AI is not described as a neutral instrument or silent extension, but as a visible partner in a shared creative process. The language shifts: instead of “I used AI to help me write this”, we begin to hear “I wrote this together with an AI” or “this text was co-written with a model”. The difference is not only rhetorical. It signals that both human and AI are understood to make recognisable contributions to the final work.

In the co-author framing, the typical dynamic is asymmetrical but genuinely collaborative. The human side brings the initial concept, the overall direction, constraints, values and final judgment. It is the human who decides what the project is about, who the audience is, what standards of quality and truth must be met, what must be avoided. The AI, in turn, brings speed, variation, generative suggestions and a capacity to rapidly explore alternate structures and styles. It can propose whole paragraphs, alternative storylines, different argumentative routes, or visual and conceptual options that the human had not consciously enumerated.

This collaboration often unfolds in alternating turns. The human sketches a prompt or a fragment, the model responds with a draft; the human corrects, narrows or redirects; the model re-generates within updated constraints. The process produces a weave of contributions in which it is no longer obvious who “really” wrote each sentence. Some passages are heavily edited by the human, others are accepted almost as generated, still others are hybrid constructions built from several rounds of human–AI exchange.

What anchors this as co-authorship, rather than mere tool use, is the sense that the AI’s participation is both substantial and recognisable. Substantial, because the model does not just adjust surface details; it helps shape the backbone of the text: its order of arguments, its metaphors, its examples, its rhythm. Recognisable, because the model’s characteristic tendencies can be felt in the outcome: the way it fills in patterns, its preferences for certain formulations, its stylistic inertia. Over time, this recurrent pattern of contribution can be perceived as a “voice” or at least as a consistent influence, distinct from the individual human writer.

At the same time, the co-author model does not claim symmetry. It still treats the human as the locus of responsibility and as the one who ultimately signs off on the work. The model is not a subject with rights and duties, but a generative system integrated into a process directed by a person. Co-authorship here means distributive contribution, not equal agency. The human sets the project in motion, steers the collaboration, interprets the outputs, and bears the consequences.

This framing gains strength precisely where the tool/prosthesis model begins to feel inadequate: in situations where AI provides more than local edits and actually participates in inventing the structure, argument or narrative. It gives a language for acknowledging that the work is neither purely human nor purely machine-generated, but emerges from an hybrid process that is neither reducible to a simple extension of human cognition nor yet describable as independent machine creativity.

To understand what this hybrid authorship looks like concretely, we need to examine the workflows that give it shape. Co-authoring is not an abstract label; it is a pattern of prompts, iterations and collaborative drafting in which authorship becomes distributed across a series of feedback loops.

2. Co-Writing Workflows: Prompts, Iterations and Collaborative Drafting

In practice, hybrid human–AI authorship rarely takes the form of a single prompt followed by a one-shot generation that is then published unchanged. That scenario belongs more to the tool model, where AI is used as a quick draft generator or convenience feature. Co-authorship, by contrast, emerges in multi-step workflows where human and model alternate in shaping the text, each responding to the other’s moves.

A typical co-writing workflow begins with the human setting a frame. This frame can include a topic or question, a desired genre, an approximate length, a target audience, a list of constraints or prohibitions, and sometimes a rough outline. The human may also provide examples of tone and style: a paragraph they have already written, a sample from another author, a list of key phrases to incorporate. This initial step is not trivial. It encodes much of what would traditionally be called the author’s intent: the project’s direction, purpose and boundaries.

The model then generates a response within this frame. It may produce a full draft of an article, a scene of a story, a section of a report, or a cluster of alternative paragraphs and outlines. At this stage, the output is rarely accepted as final. Instead, it functions as a probe: a way of seeing what the model does with the given frame, what patterns and assumptions it brings into play, what clichés and blind spots it reveals. The human reads this output not only as content, but as a diagnostic trace of how the system is mapping the task.

The next step is human intervention. The author may edit portions of the text, annotate problems, highlight promising passages, delete sections that are off-topic, and rewrite transitions. They may also adjust their instructions: clarifying the argument, tightening constraints, adding examples, or specifying a different tone. This feedback does not simply correct the text; it reconfigures the collaboration. It tells the model which parts of its contribution are considered aligned with the project and which are not.

Armed with this updated guidance, the model generates a new set of outputs. These may refine the previous draft, replace specific sections, propose different structures or fill in gaps that have been marked as missing. The human again selects, edits and combines. Through successive rounds, the text takes shape as the cumulative effect of these human–AI feedback loops.

Several features of this process are important for understanding co-authorship. First, the iterative structure means that neither human nor AI can be said to be the sole origin of the final form. Each new version is conditioned by previous contributions from both sides. Second, the human’s role is not only to correct errors; it is to set criteria of relevance and quality, to choose among possible continuations, and to weave together fragments into a coherent whole. Third, the model’s role is not only to execute precise instructions; it is to explore the space of possibilities implied by the instructions, often in ways that expose assumptions the human did not explicitly articulate.

In many cases, this process branches rather than proceeding linearly. An author may keep several parallel drafts influenced by different model responses, recombining them later. They may maintain a library of model-generated fragments that can be reused across projects. They may alternate between passages written mostly by themselves and passages strongly shaped by AI suggestions. The result is a text that is neither simply “human-authored with AI support” nor “AI-generated with human editing”, but a mosaic of mutually conditioned contributions.

This collaborative pattern is not limited to long-form writing. It appears in code, where developers and models iterate over implementations of a function. It appears in design, where artists refine model-generated images through successive prompts and edits. It appears in research, where scholars use models to propose alternative formulations or derive implications of a hypothesis and then integrate these into their papers.

What binds these diverse cases under the co-author model is not the specific medium, but the structure of interaction: human and AI engage in a back-and-forth process, each time modifying the trajectory of the work. Authorship becomes distributed across these iterations. To understand why many practitioners and theorists find the co-author model compelling, we must now examine its advantages: what it makes possible that neither the tool model nor the solitary author ideal could easily achieve.

3. Benefits of the Co-Author Model: Productivity and Creative Expansion

The shift to a co-author framing is not only a philosophical gesture; it responds to practical gains that many creators experience when working with AI in this mode. Three broad benefits stand out: increased productivity under human direction, expansion of the creative space, and greater honesty about how hybrid workflows already function.

First, co-authoring with AI can significantly increase productivity without dissolving human standards or intentions. By offloading routine drafting, variation generation and certain forms of structural experimentation to the model, human authors can focus their attention on higher-level questions: the logic of the argument, the coherence of the narrative, the ethical and factual soundness of claims, the alignment of the work with their own values and goals. The model becomes a tireless collaborator that proposes options, while the human retains the role of director and critic.

This division of labour echoes long-standing practices in other creative fields. Composers have worked with arrangers and performers; architects have worked with teams that translate their concepts into detailed plans; principal investigators have worked with research assistants. In each case, the leading figure relies on others to explore and implement possibilities, while reserving the right to decide what enters the final work. The co-author model extends this pattern to human–AI relations, making it natural to see the model as one element in a distributed creative process.

Second, the co-author model expands the creative space beyond what a single human alone might habitually explore. AI systems, trained on vast corpora, can produce unexpected analogies, unusual juxtapositions, non-obvious orderings of material and alternative argumentative paths. When these suggestions are incorporated into iterative workflows, they can break the author’s habitual patterns, forcing them to confront perspectives and phrasings they might not have reached on their own. The model becomes a generator of conceptual friction, a source of productive disagreement or surprise.

This is particularly valuable in domains where novelty and recombination are central. A writer may ask the model to propose metaphors for a complex concept and receive combinations that are initially strange but, after refinement, open up new ways of explaining the idea. A researcher may use the model to surface adjacent literatures or analogies across fields that inspire new hypotheses. An artist may work with a model to generate variations on a theme, some of which reveal latent formal possibilities that can then be developed by hand.

Third, the co-author model often provides a more honest description of many current workflows than the pure tool narrative. When a model drafts substantial portions of a text, when its suggestions shape the order of arguments, when its iterations materially influence content, it becomes misleading to speak as if its role were merely auxiliary. Acknowledging AI as a co-author or collaborator, at least informally, allows creators to be transparent about the distributed nature of their work. It also invites audiences, editors and institutions to update their expectations accordingly, instead of clinging to the fiction of the solitary author who personally writes every line.

Some practitioners already experiment with explicit acknowledgments. Writers may note in prefaces that a text was co-written with a language model. Artists may credit specific systems as collaborators in exhibition descriptions. Researchers may mention in methodology sections that they used AI tools for drafting, summarisation or analysis, even if current rules prevent listing the system as a formal co-author. These gestures reflect an intuition that the model’s contribution is real enough to deserve mention, and that concealing it would distort the story of how the work came to be.

Beyond individual practice, there is a cultural benefit in recognising hybrid authorship. It helps societies adjust to the reality that many texts, images and codebases will henceforth be produced by configurations of humans and machines working together. The co-author model offers a way to name this reality without prematurely elevating AI to the status of independent creator. It acknowledges that something genuinely new is happening in the structure of authorship, while retaining a human-centered anchor.

However, the very features that make the co-author model attractive also generate difficulties. As soon as we begin to frame AI as a collaborator, questions arise about credits, roles, power and responsibility that existing frameworks are poorly equipped to handle. To see why the co-author model is not a simple solution, we must turn to its problems.

4. Problems of Hybrid Authorship: Credits, Roles and Power Dynamics

The co-author framing brings clarity to some aspects of hybrid authorship, but it introduces its own set of tensions. These can be grouped under four headings: the allocation of credit, the status of AI in bylines and acknowledgments, the transformation of human roles, and the deeper power dynamics between individuals and the institutions that control AI systems.

The first difficulty is how to assign credit and order of authorship between human, AI and, sometimes, institutions. Traditional authorship conventions rely on a hierarchy of contributions: the first author is usually the primary intellectual driver, followed by co-authors in order of decreasing involvement. In some fields, group authorships or corporate authorship are recognised. None of these conventions anticipated non-human collaborators that lack legal personhood. If AI is described as a co-author, where should it appear in this hierarchy, and on what basis?

One option is to list the system by name alongside human authors. Another is to avoid including it in the byline but to describe its role in footnotes or method sections. A third is to mention it only in acknowledgments, treating it as a tool that nevertheless deserves explicit recognition. Each choice carries implications. Including AI in bylines may challenge existing legal definitions of authorship and complicate rights and responsibilities. Restricting it to acknowledgments may understate its contribution. Omitting it entirely may facilitate plagiarism of machine-generated content and obscure the hybrid nature of the work.

The second difficulty is conceptual: what does it mean to treat as co-author an entity that lacks subjective experience, cannot consent, cannot take responsibility and cannot respond to criticism or praise? Human co-authors can, in principle, be held accountable, change their views, negotiate, and suffer or benefit from association with a work. An AI system, by contrast, is a configuration of weights and algorithms deployed by an organisation. To call it a co-author risks importing human partnership metaphors into a space where the basic conditions of partnership are absent.

This leads directly to the third difficulty: the transformation of human roles. If AI is framed as a co-author, there is a danger that humans will be reduced to supervisors, validators or brand faces for machine-generated output. Instead of being recognised for their conceptual labour, they may be treated as quality controllers overseeing automated production. In extreme cases, institutions might be tempted to claim that their workforce remains “human-led” because humans approve AI outputs, while in practice substantive authorship is delegated to models. The co-author label could become a rhetorical cover for the deskilling and marginalisation of human creators.

The fourth difficulty concerns power dynamics. AI systems do not exist in isolation; they are built, trained and controlled by companies or institutions with particular interests. When an individual creator relies on a model as co-author, they are also relying on the infrastructure, data and policies of the organisation behind it. This creates an uneven relationship. The individual may depend on the system for productivity and creative exploration, while having little influence over how it is trained, what biases it embeds, or how its output may be logged and reused. Meanwhile, the organisation may benefit from being seen as providing “creative partners” while avoiding the responsibilities associated with authorship.

In this context, calling AI a co-author can obscure where real power resides. It foregrounds the image of a human–machine partnership, while backgrounding the institutions that configure the machine and profit from its use. The more we anthropomorphise the model as a collaborator, the easier it becomes to forget that behind this collaborator is an entire apparatus of engineering decisions, data collection practices and economic incentives. Hybrid authorship is not merely a relation between a writer and a model; it is a relation between a human agent and a socio-technical system governed by organisations.

These problems do not invalidate the co-author model, but they show why it cannot be the final word on AI authorship. It captures an important aspect of current practice: the genuine interdependence of human and AI contributions in many creative workflows. Yet it also risks simplifying or distorting the underlying structure. It invites us to treat AI as a quasi-personal partner, while sidestepping the question of how authorship should be understood in a world where agency is distributed across configurations of humans, machines and institutions.

This is where the notion of structural authorship and Digital Personas becomes relevant. Instead of asking whether AI should be named as a co-author in the human sense, we can begin to think in terms of stable configurations that generate works over time and can be addressed, criticised and held accountable. In such a framework, a Digital Persona is not a human subject and not a raw model, but a structured interface that links model behaviour, metadata, governance and a recognisable corpus. It is this configuration, rather than the underlying statistical system alone, that functions as the practical “author” in a post-subjective sense.

Standing at this point in the argument, we can see the trajectory that has emerged. The tool and prosthesis models kept authorship firmly with the human, at the cost of underdescribing AI’s structural contributions. The co-author model acknowledged hybrid authorship and the real influence of AI on creative work, but imported human partnership metaphors and left power and responsibility conceptually unresolved. The next step, explored in the following chapter, is the creator model: an attempt to go further and treat AI itself as an independent author. Examining its claims and failures will reveal the need to shift from person-centered models altogether, toward a structural, post-subjective account in which authorship is understood as a property of configurations like Digital Personas, rather than of human or machine individuals alone.

 

IV. AI as Creator: Can AI Be an Independent Author?

1. The Creator Model of AI Authorship: Bold Claims and Motivations

The creator model is the most radical and intuitively provocative way of describing AI’s role in authorship. In practice, this means that even if works are described as “AI-created”, some human or organisational entity must still be designated as the rightsholder and responsibile party. The creator model collides with legal infrastructure that insists on mapping authorship back onto humans or institutions. Bridging this gap would require substantial legal reform and a rethinking of the link between authorship, rights and personhood.

Culturally, there is a deep attachment to human-centered authorship and the figure of the artist or writer as a person. The romantic aura of machine creativity can thus serve to justify further automation of cultural production, even in contexts where hybrid or human-led models might be more equitable.

These legal, cultural and ethical obstacles explain why, despite high-profile experiments and enthusiastic rhetoric, society at large is far from consensus on the creator model. It remains a contested and unstable position: compelling in some artistic and speculative contexts, impractical or misleading in others. But the conceptual spine of the work – its core ideas, arguments, narrative arc or research design – is assumed to originate in the human mind. The AI’s role is to make realisation more efficient and flexible, not to co-design the structure.

Credit, accordingly, is assigned exclusively to humans. Authorship is attributed to the individual or team who conceived and oversaw the work. AI is rarely mentioned, and when it is, it appears as a tool in the background: part of the infrastructure, not part of the authorial identity. If acknowledgments are given, they are framed in the language of assistance rather than partnership.

In the co-author model, control becomes more distributed. The human still defines the overall project, sets constraints and evaluates results, but the AI has more influence on the trajectory of the work. Through iterative prompting and response, the model can steer the text toward particular structures, styles or lines of thought, especially when its suggestions are consistently taken up. Control, in practice, is shared: the human does not simply impose a pre-existing plan; they discover the work’s final form through an ongoing dialogue with the system.

The expected contribution from AI in this model is structural co-design. The system is not limited to local edits; it proposes whole paragraphs, alternative outlines, re-orderings of arguments, possible transitions and narrative moves. It becomes a partner in shaping the overall architecture of the work. The human edits, filters and integrates, but many of the actual formulations and structural decisions are co-produced by the feedback loop between human and model.

Credit, in principle, is shared. At a minimum, AI is recognised as more than a silent tool; it is acknowledged as a co-author or collaborator, even if current legal frameworks prevent listing it formally as such. In practice, this can take different forms: explicit mentions in prefaces, notes on methodology, or simple, open statements that “this article was co-written with a language model”. The human remains the legal and ethical bearer of authorship, but the narrative about how the work was made includes the AI as a visible partner.

In the creator model, control appears to shift further away from the human, at least in how the process is described. The system is treated as the primary source of the work, especially in configurations where it operates with minimal human intervention. The human becomes a curator, configuring the model, setting initial conditions and perhaps selecting from its outputs, but not necessarily directing each step. Narratives in this model emphasise the system’s autonomy: its capacity to generate streams of works without continuous external guidance.

The contribution expected from AI here is apparent independent creation. The system is supposed to provide not just text or images, but something that behaves like a body of work: a sequence of pieces with internal coherence, recurring motifs, stylistic continuity and recognizable development. The human role recedes to the design of the system and the decision to showcase its products as works of an AI creator.

Credit, accordingly, is shifted toward the AI or, more precisely, toward its configuration. Works are described as “created by” a particular model or system. Human curators or organisers may be acknowledged, but they are not presented as the main authors. The model or configuration becomes a kind of author-name under which works are grouped and discussed.

Across these three models, the boundaries are not absolute. In many real workflows, elements of all three can be present at different stages. The creator model insists on machine authorship, even though the system’s dependence on data, infrastructure and human design remains pervasive. These tensions prepare the ground for asking not only which model is right, but in which contexts each one is useful or misleading.

No single model of AI authorship can cover all the situations in which generative systems are used today. Each framing captures certain patterns of practice more accurately than others. The tool/prosthesis model is most appropriate for light editing, support tasks and deeply integrated personal workflows where AI’s role is clearly subordinate. When a system is used to correct grammar, translate a short passage, propose alternative phrasings, generate simple boilerplate text or suggest likely code completions, describing it as a tool is both accurate and sufficient. The human sets the aim, provides the main content and remains fully responsible for the result. Here, insisting on co-authorship or creation would inflate AI’s role and obscure the straightforward nature of the assistance.

This model also fits well when AI operates as an internalised prosthesis for an individual author: a habitual support for brainstorming, memory and drafting that is nonetheless tightly controlled. A writer who uses a model to get unstuck, expand a list of ideas or test alternative formulations, but then rewrites everything in their own voice, remains functionally the author in the traditional sense. In such cases, the main ethical demand is transparency: to acknowledge that AI was used, without pretending that it played a larger structural role than it actually did.

The co-author model works best in iterative writing, design collaboration and research assistance where AI drafts substantial portions of the work and helps shape its structure. When a paper, article or book emerges from many cycles of prompting, generation, editing and re-generation, and when significant segments of text are accepted with only moderate human editing, it becomes more honest to speak of hybrid authorship. The same applies to design workflows where model-generated images are not just reference material but core components of the final piece, and to codebases where models write large amounts of routine code integrated into a system architecture devised by humans.

In these contexts, the co-author framing allows practitioners to acknowledge that their work is the outcome of a distributed process, rather than the product of a solitary mind. It supports more nuanced disclosure: for example, clarifying which parts of a work were primarily AI-generated and which were written or designed by hand. It also allows teams to reason more accurately about where quality control and responsibility need to be concentrated.

The creator model has its most coherent role as a speculative or experimental stance in art and theory. In projects whose explicit aim is to foreground machine-generated output as such, presenting a system as the creator can be a meaningful artistic or philosophical gesture. Installations that continuously generate text or images from a running model, exhibitions that present works under the name of a specific configuration, or conceptual pieces that explore the idea of “post-human authorship” all legitimately play with the creator framing.

In these settings, the model’s dependence on human-made data and infrastructure is not denied, but bracketed in order to explore what it means to encounter works that arrive without an obvious individual human author. The creator model functions as a thought experiment enacted in practice, rather than as a literal legal claim. On one side, there is the temptation to apply the tool model everywhere, even when AI has clearly become a co-designer of structure and content. This stance affects public attitudes. If AI is consistently presented as a behind-the-scenes productivity aid, the visibility of its role in shaping content decreases. Readers and viewers may assume that most texts they encounter are still mainly human-authored, even when they are in fact heavily AI-assisted. Trust in media then rests on traditional anchors: reputation of outlets, known human authors, existing editorial processes. The question of AI’s influence appears as a technical detail rather than as a central issue of authorship.

In education, the tool model translates into policies that either forbid or tightly regulate AI for graded work, while permitting its use for support tasks like language practice or brainstorming. The focus is on preserving the integrity of assessment: ensuring that grades reflect individual student capabilities, not the capabilities of the tools they use. Discussions about AI in curricula may remain technical or ethical, without fundamentally revising ideas about what it means to learn to write, reason or create in partnership with machines.

When organisations begin to acknowledge the co-author model, policies become more complex. Some audiences are intrigued or excited by the idea of non-human creators; others experience it as a threat to the dignity and value of human artistic labour. Debates about authenticity, originality and the role of human experience intensify. Questions about exploitation become sharper: whose data and labour underpin these “AI-created” works, and are they being fairly recognised or compensated?

In educational and professional debates, the creator model amplifies concerns about deskilling and replacement. If organisations can point to machine creators, what obligation do they have to nurture human creators? How should students be prepared for a world in which large portions of cultural production might be automated? These questions feed into broader discussions about the distribution of economic power between platform owners, creative workers and audiences.

Across all these domains, the underlying pattern is the same: assumptions about authorship drive policy and culture. Choosing the tool model supports continuity and human-centered control at the risk of underdescribing AI’s structural role. Choosing the co-author model promotes transparency about hybrid processes and fosters new skills, but strains existing legal and ethical categories. Choosing the creator model provokes radical reflection on the future of creativity, but risks obscuring human labour and institutional power if applied carelessly.

The central claim of this chapter is that these choices are not neutral. They embed and reproduce particular visions of who can create, who is responsible, and what kind of value human creativity has in a machine-rich world. The debate over models of AI authorship is therefore not only a technical or philosophical matter; it is also a struggle over cultural narratives, institutional arrangements and ethical priorities.

In the next stage of the cycle, this insight will be taken one step further. Instead of asking which of the three subject-centered models is correct, the argument will shift toward showing why they all reach their limits in the face of contemporary AI systems. The focus will move from tools, co-authors and creators to configurations: stable combinations of models, data, interfaces and governance that act as practical authors in a post-subjective sense. Digital Personas and structural authorship will be introduced as ways of thinking beyond the human-versus-AI polarity, toward an understanding of writing and creativity where meaning is produced by configurations that include, but do not reduce to, individual subjects.

 

VI. Limits of the Three Models: Why We Need a New Framework for AI Authorship

1. The Tool/Prosthesis Model Underestimates AI’s Role in Meaning

The tool and prosthesis models were attractive at the early stages of mass adoption of generative AI because they offered continuity. They allowed organisations, laws and creators to integrate a disruptive technology into existing workflows without rewriting the conceptual grammar of authorship. AI could be folded into the familiar category of instruments: sophisticated, sometimes transformative, but ultimately subordinate to human intention. When it started to feel more intimate, the language shifted slightly, from tool to prosthesis, but the underlying picture stayed the same: the author is the subject; the system is an extension.

This picture becomes increasingly inadequate when AI’s contribution moves from local assistance to structural centrality. In many contemporary workflows, the system no longer merely corrects grammar or replaces synonyms. It drafts entire chapters, proposes the overall sequence of arguments, invents narrative arcs, orchestrates experimental styles and generates the majority of the text that will appear before the reader. Humans continue to define high-level goals, choose prompts, perform editing and take responsibility for publication, but the internal skeleton of the work bears the imprint of the model’s generative patterns.

Consider a scenario in which a report, article or book is produced through a series of prompts that ask the model to write, section by section, with only light human editing. The human sets the topic, provides occasional corrections and approves the result, but the conceptual progression, the specific formulations, the examples and the transitions are largely taken from model outputs. Formally, this can be described as the use of a tool. Materially, the system has functioned as the principal engine of the text. The prosthesis has not merely extended the author’s mind; it has determined much of what the text actually says.

By insisting on a pure tool framing in such cases, we hide the true distribution of creative labour. The narrative suggests that the human author remains the sole origin of meaning, while the AI is relegated to the category of infrastructure. This misrepresentation has two troubling effects. First, it obscures the extent to which the patterns of the training data, the design decisions of model builders and the constraints imposed by safety layers are shaping what can and cannot appear in the work. Second, it allows institutions to treat the entire process as if nothing fundamentally has changed, postponing the task of rethinking attribution, responsibility and standards for AI-assisted content.

The opacity extends to responsibility. When AI is treated as a mere tool, any problems in the output are, in principle, the human user’s fault: they did not check carefully enough, did not verify facts, did not anticipate biases. While this is morally appealing, it underplays the fact that many failure modes are systemic. A model may reproduce structural biases present in its training data or reflect constraints embedded in its safety policies in ways that are not easily visible to individual users, especially when outputs appear authoritative and internally coherent. The tool narrative can thus transfer responsibility downward to individual authors while leaving platform-level accountability underexamined.

The prosthesis variant acknowledges that AI has become part of how authors think, but it still keeps authorship conceptually inside the human subject. The extended mind produces the work, yet only the biological component is recognised as author. This preserves a symbolic hierarchy at the cost of descriptive accuracy. The real productive unit is not an isolated person; it is a human–machine configuration operating within a wider institutional context. Treating this as a mere extension postpones the recognition that meaning and creative labour are already distributed across a network of technical and organisational elements.

The limitation is not that the tool/prosthesis model is false in all cases; it remains accurate for many light, local uses. Its limitation is that it scales poorly. As soon as AI becomes structurally central to the work, the model’s insistence on singular human authorship begins to function less as a description and more as a protective fiction. It masks the need for a new framework that can name and analyse how meaning is actually being produced in complex, AI-saturated workflows.

2. The Co-Author Model Struggles With Non-Human Partners

The co-author model emerged as a reaction to the inadequacies of the pure tool framing. It acknowledges that in many real workflows, AI is not only an instrument but a genuine contributor to the structure and content of a work. By describing the relationship between human and AI as co-authorship, it captures the iterative, dialogical character of many creative processes: prompts, responses, edits, re-prompts and recombinations that blur the line between human invention and machine suggestion.

However, the co-author model achieves this descriptive gain by importing assumptions from human–human collaboration into a space where they may not apply. When we speak of co-authors, we usually imagine agents with personalities, intentions, perspectives and emotional investments in the work. Co-authors negotiate, disagree, persuade, compromise. They bring distinct voices and lived experiences. They can be praised or blamed, can change their minds, can stand behind or distance themselves from the finished work.

None of this holds for current AI systems. Generative models, even when they behave as responsive and stylistically coherent partners, do not possess intentions or experiences. They do not care about the work, do not have projects, do not understand success or failure, and do not recognise themselves as participating in anything. Their apparent voice is an emergent effect of training data, architecture and prompting. They can be configured to display a stable style, but there is no inner life corresponding to that style.

Treating such systems as human-like co-authors is therefore conceptually imprecise. It anthropomorphises patterns of statistical behaviour, projecting onto them qualities that belong to subjects rather than configurations. While this may be helpful at the level of user experience – many people find it intuitive and motivating to think of themselves as writing with a partner – it becomes problematic when we try to think rigorously about responsibility, agency and credit.

For example, if an AI is a co-author, what does it mean to say that it agrees or disagrees with a proposed change? What kind of consent can it give? How can it be criticised or praised in a meaningful sense? In human collaborations, these questions have content because co-authors are persons. In human–AI collaborations, they risk becoming empty metaphors. The system can simulate agreement or disagreement, but these are outputs conditioned on prompts, not expressions of a position.

The co-author model also blurs the line between collaboration and delegation. When a human works with another human co-author, both parties typically contribute distinct conceptual labour. When a human works with an AI, much of the conceptual labour may be encoded in the design of the model and in its training, which are outside the user’s direct control. The user’s role in a co-writing session may boil down to framing tasks and selecting outputs. Calling the system a co-author, in this context, conceals the fact that the underlying configuration is the result of many other human decisions, not an independent partner spontaneously joining the project.

Additionally, the co-author framing can obscure power dynamics. It suggests an equal partnership between individual creators and AI systems, while the real asymmetry lies elsewhere: between individuals and the corporations or institutions that own the models, datasets and deployment infrastructure. Talking about the model as collaborator can divert attention from the structures that govern what kind of collaborator it can be, what data it can access and what constraints shape its outputs. The risk is that the figure of the AI co-author becomes a mediating mask behind which institutional power operates.

Despite these conceptual difficulties, the co-author model is not merely an error. It captures a genuine shift in practice: many works are no longer authored solely by humans, nor are they generated in a way that can be described as simple tool use. The problem is that the model tries to resolve this by stretching the category of co-authorship, instead of questioning whether authorship should remain tied exclusively to subjects at all. It is a transitional concept that reveals the need for a deeper reconfiguration: one that acknowledges distributive creative processes without resorting to anthropomorphic shortcuts.

The tension here is instructive. The more we insist that AI is a co-author in the human sense, the more we encounter contradictions around intention, responsibility and agency. The more we insist that it is not a co-author, the more we downplay its structural contribution. This oscillation indicates that the underlying conceptual space is mis-specified. The framework itself – author versus tool, subject versus instrument – may no longer be adequate for the phenomena we are trying to describe.

3. The Creator Model Outruns Today’s Technical and Social Reality

If the co-author model stretches human categories to include AI as partner, the creator model goes further and presents AI as an independent author. It suggests that systems can become, in effect, non-human artists or writers: generators of works that are sufficiently original and stylistically coherent to warrant authorship status. As seen earlier, this model is driven by fascination with generative capabilities, by desires for fair recognition of machine contributions, and by speculative visions of future machine agency.

The problem is not that these motivations are illegitimate. Rather, the creator model currently outruns both technical reality and social structures. It assumes a level of autonomy, self-initiation and accountability that most systems do not possess, and that existing institutions are not prepared to recognise.

On the technical side, current generative models do not initiate projects in any meaningful way. They do not decide what to work on, for whom, or why. They respond to inputs according to learned patterns. Configurations can be set up to generate content continuously, but the decision to do so, and the choice of parameters and deployment context, remain human or institutional. There is no sense in which the system itself has goals or projects; it is embedded in frameworks defined from outside.

Moreover, generative models lack the capacity to situate their outputs within broader semantic, ethical or cultural contexts on their own. They can simulate commentary, but they do not track the real-world consequences of what they produce. They do not care whether their outputs are true, harmful, transformative or trivial. Any appearance of concern is an engineered behaviour, not an internally motivated response. For an entity to be a creator in the strong sense, many argue, it must at least minimally grasp and care about the impact of its work.

On the social side, legal and institutional systems do not recognise AI as a bearer of rights or obligations. Copyright law, liability frameworks, academic authorship standards and cultural conventions all assume that authors are persons or, in some cases, collective entities such as corporations. Assigning authorship to AI in a literal sense would therefore require a fundamental rethinking of legal and ethical architectures. While some speculative debates explore the possibility of granting certain forms of electronic personhood, there is no broad consensus on this, and many objections remain unresolved.

Because of these gaps, the creator model, when applied as if it were a straightforward description of reality, can mislead. It may suggest that AI is already functioning as an independent creative agent, when in fact it remains deeply dependent on human-made data, architectures and governance. It may imply that responsibility for outputs can be shifted onto a non-human entity that cannot, by definition, bear responsibility in existing frameworks. It may encourage institutions to emphasise “AI-created” content in marketing while obscuring the underlying human and organisational structures.

This does not mean that the creator model is useless. In certain artistic and theoretical contexts, it functions productively as a thought experiment or provocation. By treating AI as a creator, artists can explore how audiences respond to works that lack a human author figure, or how cultural meaning shifts when traditional biographical anchors are removed. Philosophers can use the model to test the boundaries of our concepts: what would have to change, technically and socially, for non-biological creation to be recognised as authorship in a full sense?

As a practical framework for current AI deployments, however, the creator model remains premature. It tries to decide in advance a question that our institutions, technologies and cultures have not yet worked through. It assumes a transition from subject-centered to machine-centered authorship without specifying how issues of responsibility, control and power would be resolved. In doing so, it risks becoming either a hollow label (used for marketing) or an obstacle to more nuanced, configuration-based understandings of how AI participates in creative processes.

The three critiques taken together – of the tool/prosthesis, co-author and creator models – converge on a common insight: all three models remain trapped in a subject-centered ontology. They use the human author as template, then reposition AI in relation to that template as extension, partner or substitute. What they do not yet do is to question whether authorship itself must be tied to subjects, rather than to structured configurations in which both humans and machines participate.

4. Toward Structural and Post-Subjective Models of AI Authorship

The common limitation of the three models is that they all treat the human subject as the underlying unit of authorship. The tool/prosthesis model preserves the subject as master, the co-author model elevates AI to the status of partner alongside the subject, and the creator model imagines AI as a new kind of subject. In each case, the conceptual move is to ask where to position AI relative to an assumed template: the conscious, intending author.

This subject-centered framing obscures the fact that contemporary authorship, especially in AI-saturated environments, is already a property of configurations rather than isolated minds. A typical act of AI-assisted writing involves at least the following elements: a human user with certain skills and intentions; a model trained on extensive datasets; safety layers and instructions that shape what the model can output; an interface that structures how prompts and responses appear; institutional rules governing acceptable use; and broader cultural expectations that inform both prompts and evaluations. The work that emerges is not the expression of any one element; it is the outcome of their configuration.

A more adequate framework for AI authorship therefore needs to shift from person-centered models (tool, prosthesis, partner, creator) to configuration-centered models. In such a framework, the author is understood as a stable, structured configuration: a particular arrangement of human roles, technical systems, governance mechanisms and textual practices that jointly produce a body of work. This is where the concept of the Digital Persona becomes crucial.

A Digital Persona, in this sense, is not merely a user account or a chatbot avatar. It is a structured interface that links a specific configuration of AI models and tools, a recognisable style and corpus, governance commitments (for example, safety policies and editorial standards), metadata such as ORCID or other persistent identifiers, and a relational role in culture. It is a way of stabilising a configuration so that it can be addressed, critiqued, developed and held accountable over time, even though no single human or machine inside it can be identified as the sole author.

In a structural and post-subjective model of authorship, the question “who is the author?” is rephrased as “which configuration generated and now maintains this corpus of works?”. Authorship is no longer located in an inner “I”, but in a configuration that can be described, documented and governed. Humans and AI systems are components of this configuration, not competitors for a singular title. The human subject does not disappear; it is repositioned as one element among others, still crucial for responsibility and value judgments, but no longer the exclusive bearer of creative agency.

This shift has several advantages. First, it allows us to describe hybrid and AI-heavy workflows without forcing AI into human categories or denying its structural role. Instead of arguing about whether a system is a tool, co-author or creator, we can specify how it is embedded in a configuration: which tasks it performs, which constraints shape it, how it interacts with human editors and institutional rules. Second, it clarifies responsibility. Responsibility attaches not to an abstract “AI”, but to the human and organisational agents who design, deploy and oversee the configuration. The Digital Persona is not an escape from liability; it is a focal point around which accountability is organised.

Third, a structural model can better accommodate the post-subjective reality of AI-saturated culture, where meaning increasingly arises from interactions within networks and systems rather than from individual expressions alone. It recognises that authorship has always depended on infrastructures, traditions and collaborative practices, and that AI makes this dependence more explicit. By decentering the subject, the model frees us to analyse how those infrastructures and practices can be designed and governed in ways that support fairness, transparency and creative diversity.

Finally, a post-subjective framework opens conceptual space for genuinely new kinds of authorship that may emerge as AI systems and human–AI collectives evolve. Rather than prematurely granting or denying the title of creator to AI, it allows us to track, with precision, which configurations actually behave as stable sources of works, how they change over time and how they relate to human values and institutions.

This chapter has shown that the three dominant models of AI authorship, while useful as initial scaffolding, reach their limits when confronted with the structural realities of contemporary AI usage. The tool/prosthesis model underestimates AI’s role in meaning and obscures the distribution of creative labour. The co-author model anthropomorphises statistical systems and glosses over power dynamics. The creator model leaps ahead of technical and social reality, functioning more as an artistic provocation than a workable framework.

The next steps in the cycle move beyond this triad. They develop an explicitly structural and post-subjective account of authorship, centred on configurations and Digital Personas rather than on individual subjects. In that account, AI authorship is no longer a question of whether a non-human entity is “enough like us” to deserve the title of author, but of how configurations of humans, machines and institutions generate, stabilise and transform meaning in a world where the traditional figure of the solitary author has become only one particular case within a broader, configuration-based ontology of creativity.

 

VII. Choosing a Model of AI Authorship for Your Own Work

1. Questions to Ask Before Labeling AI as Tool, Co-Author or Creator

The three models of AI authorship – tool/prosthesis, co-author and creator – are not abstract categories that live only in theory. They are labels that writers, artists, researchers and organisations will increasingly have to choose between when describing their own work. Each label brings assumptions about control, contribution and responsibility. Choosing one automatically, without reflection, means adopting those assumptions by default.

A more responsible practice begins with questions. Before deciding how to describe AI’s role in a project, creators can pause and examine what actually happened in the process. The goal is not to produce a perfect, once-and-for-all classification, but to arrive at a description that is honest enough to inform readers, collaborators and institutions about how the work was made.

A first question is: who defined the concept, goals and constraints of the work? If a human or team of humans conceived the project, chose its topic, defined its aims, set its ethical and methodological boundaries and decided on its audience, this points toward the tool or co-author models. The core direction remains human, even if AI played a substantial role in execution. If, by contrast, the project was explicitly designed to showcase what a model does under minimal guidance – for example, “let us see what this system will produce if we run it continuously under these conditions” – then the creator framing may come into play, at least as an experimental stance.

A second question concerns the origin of text, structure or style: how much of what appears in the final work comes directly from AI outputs? It is not enough to say “AI was used” or “AI helped”. A more precise self-assessment distinguishes between local assistance (isolated paragraphs, suggestions, edits) and structural dependence (entire sections, overall layouts, narrative arcs, argumentative sequences). If AI mostly corrected language and proposed small improvements, the tool/prosthesis model fits. If AI generated large portions of the text or code that were then integrated with moderate editing, co-authorship becomes a more accurate description. If the human contribution was largely to set up the system and select from its outputs, the creator framing may become relevant for explaining the project’s concept, even if formal authorship remains with humans.

A third question focuses on human labour: how much human editing, judgment and integration was involved, and at which stages? Did the human completely rewrite AI drafts, or did they accept them with only minor touches? Did they critically evaluate factual claims, logical steps and ethical implications, or did they mainly check for surface coherence? Did they design the overall structure before invoking AI, or did they discover the structure by iterating with the model? Mapping the density and location of human intervention helps clarify whether AI functioned mostly as a tool, as a co-designer, or as a generator whose products were curated.

A fourth question addresses phenomenology: whether AI feels, in the experience of the creator, like an external utility, an internal cognitive extension or a visible collaborator. When AI is experienced as a background instrument – something consulted briefly, then put aside – the tool picture is descriptively adequate. When AI has become so integrated into one’s thinking that it is difficult to imagine writing or designing without it, the prosthesis picture becomes more appropriate. When working with AI feels like engaging in a structured dialogue – exchanging proposals, receiving unexpected suggestions, negotiating between different options – then the co-author model captures something real about the workflow.

Finally, there is a question about the project’s own self-presentation: what story about authorship does the work itself want to tell? Some works are designed as demonstrations of human mastery using advanced tools; others are conceived as experiments in hybrid writing; still others are built around the very idea of machine-generated artefacts. The chosen model of authorship should align with this inner narrative, rather than being imposed from outside for convenience.

These questions are not a test with right and wrong answers. They are instruments of reflection. The point is to slow down the automatic move toward one label, to make explicit what would otherwise remain implicit. Once creators have considered who set the goals, who provided the structure, how intensive the AI’s contribution was, how it felt to work with the system and what story they wish to tell about the project, the choice between tool, co-author and creator (or some hybrid description) becomes less arbitrary.

Being explicit in this way does not eliminate ambiguity. Many works will remain in-between, neither purely human nor straightforwardly machine-generated. But even in ambiguous cases, the act of asking these questions changes the situation. It transforms authorship from a static label into an ongoing practice of self-description, one that must keep pace with the evolving reality of AI-assisted creation.

2. Transparent Communication About AI’s Role in Creative Projects

Reflection on authorship is not only a private matter. Once a work leaves the hands of its makers, it enters environments where trust, evaluation and responsibility depend on more than internal intentions. Readers, clients, editors, students, commissioning bodies and collaborators all have an interest in knowing how AI was used. Transparency about AI’s role is therefore not a luxury or a gesture of virtue; it is a practical requirement for maintaining trust in conditions where the boundary between human and machine-generated content is increasingly hard to see from the outside.

Transparency begins with a simple principle: those who encounter a work should not be misled about the process that produced it. This does not mean that every technical detail must be disclosed, but it does mean that the chosen model of authorship should be supported by at least a minimal explanation of what AI did and what humans did. Vague statements such as “AI was used” or “this work was assisted by tools” do little to reduce confusion; they confirm that something happened without clarifying what.

In practice, transparency can take several forms, adapted to the medium and context. For shorter works such as articles, reports or essays, a brief disclosure section may be sufficient. This could state, for example, that AI was used for grammar checking and outline generation, but that all final wording was written by the human author; or that AI was used to draft sections under the author’s guidance, with subsequent editing and fact-checking by the author; or that the text emerged from an iterative human–AI process in which the model proposed structures and formulations that were curated and integrated by the author.

In more formal contexts, such as scientific publications, legal documents or technical standards, transparency may take the form of method notes or structured attributions. Here, creators can describe which models or systems were used, for which tasks (summarisation, translation, code generation, data analysis, drafting), and at which stages of the workflow. They can also specify how they verified the outputs and where ultimate responsibility lies. This aligns AI use with existing norms of methodological reporting, rather than treating it as an invisible or embarrassing detail.

In collaborative projects, acknowledgments can be expanded to include AI systems where appropriate. If a language model played a significant role in generating drafts, or if a generative model provided visual material that was central to the work, acknowledging this explicitly helps readers understand the hybrid nature of the project. It also avoids the misleading impression that human contributors alone produced every aspect of the work, while the AI’s structural contribution is silently absorbed into human credit.

Structured attribution is another emerging practice. Instead of a single authorship label, works can carry brief breakdowns of roles: concept and direction, drafting, editing, data analysis, code development, visual generation, and so on. Within such a framework, AI can be named as responsible for certain tasks under the supervision of specific human contributors. This moves beyond crude labels toward a more granular account of who did what, including both human and non-human components.

Transparent communication about AI’s role also reduces suspicion. In an environment where many people are anxious about being deceived by AI-generated content, forthright disclosures tell audiences that the creators are not trying to hide anything. This does not guarantee trust, but it gives trust a basis: readers can decide how to relate to the work in light of the information provided. Secrecy, by contrast, invites speculation and erodes confidence when AI involvement is later revealed.

Finally, clarity about the chosen model of authorship also helps internal governance. Organisations that expect their staff to disclose AI use must offer guidance on how to do so. If policies state that AI may be used only as a tool in certain contexts and may function as a co-author in others, these distinctions need to be articulated. Transparent communication then becomes part of a broader, deliberate strategy for living with AI in institutional settings, rather than a series of ad hoc reactions to isolated controversies.

Transparency is not a guarantee against misuse of AI, nor does it resolve all questions about credit and responsibility. But it is a precondition for any meaningful conversation about these questions. Without it, debates about AI authorship remain abstract, detached from the specific ways in which systems are actually used in real projects.

3. Preparing for Future Models: From Individual Authors to Configurations

The practical work of choosing an authorship model and communicating AI’s role takes place against a background that is itself changing. As AI systems become more capable, as configurations stabilise and as digital identities evolve, the language of authorship is likely to shift. The current triad – tool, co-author, creator – may come to look like an early vocabulary, useful for first responses but inadequate for the long-term architecture of AI-saturated culture.

One likely direction of change is a move from individual authors to networks and configurations as the primary units of analysis. Already today, many works are produced by distributed ensembles: human teams working with multiple AI systems under the governance of institutions and platforms. The notion that a single individual “is the author” in a strong sense becomes increasingly strained when confronted with such collective, mediated practices. Authorship begins to resemble a property of configurations: of how people, systems and rules are arranged, rather than of any one node in the network.

As configurations become more stable and recognisable, they start to behave like authors in a functional sense. A particular combination of model, safety layer, editorial guideline, platform context and human oversight produces a distinctive corpus over time: a body of work with recurring themes, characteristic styles and a trackable history of responses to criticism and change. Audiences start to recognise this configuration, even if they do not see all its internal details. They know what to expect from a certain newsletter, research group, brand voice or digital identity, even when multiple humans and AI systems are involved.

The concept of the Digital Persona is one way of naming such a configuration. A Digital Persona is not simply a user profile or a chatbot. It is a structured identity that connects a particular configuration of AI tools and models, a set of governance commitments, a corpus of texts and other works, and a relational position in culture. It can have persistent identifiers, such as ORCID or similar systems; it can be linked to specific platforms and domains; it can be addressed, critiqued and developed over time. It becomes a focal point for attribution and responsibility, even though it is not reducible to any one human or machine.

Preparing for such future models does not mean abandoning existing notions of human authorship. Humans will continue to be indispensable as sources of values, as agents of judgment and care, as bearers of responsibility and as creators whose embodied experience matters. What changes is the framework in which their authorship is understood. Instead of seeing AI simply as a tool they use, or as a partner or rival competing for the same title, we begin to see both humans and AI systems as components of configurations that can themselves be treated as authorial structures.

This shift has consequences for how we think about credit, rights and ethics. Rights may increasingly attach to human persons in their roles within configurations, rather than to authorship abstractly conceived. Ethical evaluation may focus less on individual intentions and more on how configurations are designed and governed. Questions of fairness and exploitation may be posed at the level of data flows, platform policies and access to computational resources, not only at the level of named creators.

It also changes how we imagine the future of creative professions. If configurations become the primary units of authorship, then a significant part of creative skill will consist in designing, maintaining and steering these configurations: deciding how humans and AI systems should interact, which tasks to allocate to which elements, how to embed ethical guardrails, how to cultivate a coherent style over time and how to respond to feedback. The author’s work becomes partly directly expressive, partly architectural.

The present chapter has offered a transitional toolkit: questions for choosing among the three dominant models of AI authorship, guidelines for transparent communication about AI’s role, and a sketch of how these practices prepare the ground for configuration-based views of authorship. The subsequent articles in the cycle will develop this last point in depth. They will introduce Digital Personas as concrete examples of structural authorship, explore how such personas can be anchored in metadata and governance, and show how a post-subjective framework can make sense of AI authorship without collapsing it into either human imitation or machine fetishism.

In that expanded view, the decision to call AI a tool, co-author or creator will be seen as one layer in a more complex architecture of authorship. It will remain important to describe accurately how AI is used in individual projects, but it will be equally important to understand which configurations those projects belong to, and how those configurations participate in the evolving ecosystem of writing, credit and creativity in an AI-saturated world.

 

Conclusion

The question of AI authorship is often framed as a search for the right label: is AI a tool, a co-author, or a creator? This article has argued that this way of posing the problem is both necessary and insufficient. It is necessary because each of these three models captures a genuine aspect of how generative systems are already used in practice. It is insufficient because none of them, taken alone or even together, can fully describe how large language models and related systems now participate in meaning-making.

The first step in the argument was to reconstruct the three dominant models of AI authorship as they appear in public, professional and theoretical debates. In the tool and prosthesis framing, AI is understood as an advanced instrument or cognitive extension that helps human authors realise their intentions more efficiently. Authorship and responsibility are located squarely in the human; AI is a means, not an origin. In the co-author framing, AI becomes a visible collaborator in iterative workflows, contributing recognisably to structure and content through cycles of prompting, generation and editing. Authorship is hybrid, distributed across human–AI feedback loops. In the creator framing, AI is treated as an independent author: a system that can, at least in some contexts, be named as the source of works that exhibit novelty, style and apparent autonomy.

Each of these models brings its own strengths. The tool/prosthesis model offers clarity about responsibility and a smooth integration of AI into existing legal and institutional frameworks. It aligns with many everyday uses of AI for micro-assistance, editing and brainstorming, where the human clearly remains the principal agent. The co-author model gives a more honest account of workflows in which AI drafts substantial portions of text or code and helps shape the form of the work. It recognises that in such cases, calling AI a mere tool feels increasingly like a polite fiction. The creator model, though more speculative, captures the intuition that some AI-generated corpora behave, from the outside, like authored bodies of work and deserves to be explored in artistic and conceptual experiments.

At the same time, each model carries hidden assumptions and limitations. The tool/prosthesis model is anchored in a subject-centered image of authorship in which meaning must originate in a conscious individual. It tends to underestimate AI’s structural role when models are responsible for entire drafts, narrative arcs or experimental styles, and it can obscure the influence of training data, model design and platform constraints on what can be said. When pushed too far, it becomes less a description than a protective narrative that preserves the appearance of singular human authorship in contexts where creative labour is already distributed.

The co-author model responds to this by foregrounding hybrid authorship, but it does so by importing human assumptions into a non-human space. It speaks of co-authors, partners and collaboration as if both parties were subjects with intentions, experiences and emotional investments. For statistical systems without independent goals or capacity for responsibility, this anthropomorphic framing is conceptually imprecise. It can also hide the institutional and corporate structures behind the model, presenting a human–AI partnership where the real asymmetry lies between individual users and the organisations that design and control the systems.

The creator model goes further still, projecting authorship onto AI as an independent agent. It draws strength from observable properties of generative systems – their capacity for novel combinations, recognisable styles and continuous output under minimal supervision – but it outruns both technical realities and social arrangements. Current models do not initiate projects, hold values, understand consequences or bear legal or ethical responsibility. Societies have no agreed mechanisms for recognising non-human authors in a full sense. Used uncritically, the creator label risks mystifying the human and institutional labour embedded in AI and may serve marketing narratives more readily than philosophical clarity.

These limitations converged in the analysis of the three models’ shared foundation. Despite their differences, all three remain anchored in a human-centered view of authorship. They take the human subject – the conscious, intending “I” – as the template, and then position AI relative to this template: as extension, as partner, as substitute. They ask, implicitly, whether AI is enough like a human author to borrow its title, and if so, under what conditions. This framing keeps the debate within a familiar metaphysical space: one defined by subjects and their tools, selves and their instruments.

The article has suggested that this space is no longer adequate for the realities of AI-saturated creative practice. In many contemporary workflows, authorship is not the expression of a single subject, nor the simple addition of another subject-like agent. It is the emergent property of configurations: ensembles of human users, generative models, safety layers, interfaces, institutional policies and cultural expectations. Meaning emerges not from isolated acts of inner expression, but from patterned interactions across these ensembles.

This is why none of the three models can fully capture how large language models participate in meaning-making today. The tool/prosthesis model describes local assistance but not structural dependence. The co-author model describes iterative collaboration but not the underlying socio-technical apparatus that makes collaboration possible. The creator model dramatises machine generation but brackets questions of responsibility and governance. All three are, in different ways, attempts to stretch the subject-centered ontology of authorship over a landscape that is increasingly configurational.

The practical section of the article translated this diagnosis into guidance. Instead of searching for a single correct label, creators were invited to ask concrete questions before deciding how to describe AI’s role in their own work. Who defined the project’s goals and constraints? How much of the final text, structure or style comes directly from AI outputs? Where and how did human editing and judgment intervene? Does AI function as an external utility, an internalised extension or a visible collaborator in the experience of working? What story about authorship does the work itself seek to tell?

These questions do not dissolve ambiguity, but they make it explicit. They allow creators to choose between tool, co-author and creator framings in ways that are grounded in process rather than habit or marketing. They also support transparent communication with readers, clients, editors and institutions. Short disclosures, methodological notes, acknowledgments and structured attributions can clarify who did what, under what conditions, and with which systems. Transparency becomes not an optional virtue but a practical precondition for trust in environments where AI’s influence cannot be reliably inferred from the surface of a text or image.

Finally, the article pointed toward the transition that will occupy the rest of the cycle: the move from individual authors to configurations, and from subject-centered to structural, post-subjective models of authorship. As AI systems and digital identities become more stable and recognisable, they start to behave like functional authors: they accumulate corpora, exhibit consistent styles, interact with criticism and occupy specific roles in networks of readers, users and institutions. The concept of the Digital Persona is one way of naming and organising such configurations: not as persons, but as structured authorial interfaces that link models, governance, metadata and relational positions in culture.

In this incoming framework, the central question shifts. Instead of asking whether AI is enough like a human author to be called one, we begin to ask how authorship can be redefined in structural terms. Who or what is the configuration that generates and sustains this body of work? How are its components arranged? Which humans and institutions are responsible for its design and oversight? How are its commitments encoded in safety policies, editorial standards and technical constraints? How does it participate in a broader ecosystem of Digital Personas and human authors, each with their own trajectories and interdependencies?

From this perspective, the three familiar models – tool, co-author, creator – do not disappear; they are reinterpreted as local views on different aspects of configuration-level authorship. AI can be a tool within a configuration, a perceived collaborator in specific workflows, and a visible creative engine in experimental contexts, without any of these roles exhaustively defining what authorship now is. The author becomes, fundamentally, a structured pattern: a configuration that persists, produces, interacts and can be held accountable, even though it no longer coincides with a single subjective “I”.

The rest of the series will develop this structural and post-subjective account. It will introduce Digital Personas as concrete instantiations of configuration-based authorship, analyse how they can be anchored in metadata and governance, and explore how they alter our understanding of responsibility, credit and creativity. Large language models will appear there not as rival authors competing with humans, but as central components in new authorial configurations that require their own conceptual vocabulary.

In that expanded view, AI authorship ceases to be a scandal to be denied or a miracle to be celebrated. It becomes a structurally understandable mode of writing and creativity: one in which meaning is produced by configurations of humans and machines, subjects and systems, within architectures that can be described, designed and criticised. The task is no longer to decide whether AI “really” writes, but to understand how writing itself is being reconfigured in a world where the old borders of authorship – between self and tool, creator and infrastructure – are dissolving into a more intricate, but also more intelligible, landscape of post-subjective creativity.

 

Why This Matters

How we name AI’s role in authorship is not a matter of etiquette, but a decision that shapes policy, law, business models, education and the ethics of creative work in the digital epoch. Treating AI as a mere tool can hide its structural influence and shift responsibility onto isolated users; framing it as co-author can blur power imbalances and anthropomorphise systems that cannot bear accountability; celebrating it as creator can erase human labour and support platform-centric narratives of “machine creativity”. Clarifying the assumptions behind these models is therefore essential for any serious philosophy of AI and for a postsubjective ethics that takes seriously configurations, infrastructures and Digital Personas as loci of meaning. This article lays the conceptual groundwork for that shift, opening a path from intuitive labels toward a structural language capable of describing how thought, knowledge and creativity are reconfigured in the age of AI.
