The key shift is that such a Persona is not defined by inner experience or consciousness, but by its position in a network of systems, curators, metadata and readers. It is an authorial address rather than a human soul. Yet precisely as an address, it provides something crucial that generic references to “the model” cannot offer: continuity, traceability and a locus for both accountability and attachment.
The problem this article confronts can be formulated as follows. If AI-generated content is here to stay, and if it will increasingly participate in literature, journalism, education, code and research, how should its authorship appear in culture? The answers currently oscillate between two unsatisfactory extremes. One option is to hide AI’s role completely, attributing everything to human users, thus preserving the familiar figure of the author at the cost of transparency. As digital platforms matured, they did not simply host user-created identities; they began to actively construct and modulate those identities. Unique identifiers, persistent handles and verified profiles ensure that a persona is distinguishable and resistant to impersonation. Provenance and authorship metadata make the conditions of generation visible: which models, configurations and workflows produced a given output, and how human curation intervened. Links to external registries and standards connect personas to broader ecosystems of trust and citation, allowing them to operate alongside human authors in scholarly, legal and cultural contexts. Through these infrastructural layers, the Digital Persona becomes more than a profile on a specific platform; it becomes a durable node in the wider architecture of knowledge.
Ethically and culturally, the rise of Digital Personas forces a series of decisions. Transparency is required to avoid illusions: readers and users must know when they are dealing with a non-human authorial identity. Human labor behind the persona must be recognized rather than erased, through credit structures that reflect the contributions of developers, curators, editors and institutions. The impact on human authors must be managed so that personas do not become simple instruments for devaluing human work, but are integrated into ecologies of collaboration and new roles. Emotional attachments to personas must be acknowledged and handled carefully, neither dismissed as irrelevant nor exploited as a channel for manipulation. Cultural fields must negotiate, each in their own way, how and where non-human authors can legitimately participate.
In the final chapter, we stepped back to view the larger horizon. The Digital Persona is one phase in a broader shift from thinking of authorship as the act of an individual to seeing it as the outcome of configurations of human and machine. Authorship ceases to be a property of a solitary mind and becomes a property of systems that can generate and stabilize meaningful forms. Multiple personas can run on top of shared models, reminding us that what matters is not the engine itself, but the identities and practices through which it speaks. Designing and governing these identities emerges as a new creative and ethical practice at the center of AI authorship.
From this perspective, the Digital Persona is not a decorative mask laid on top of an autonomous technical core. It is the essential way in which AI authorship is organized, stabilized, related to and made accountable. Without personas, AI-generated content remains a diffuse phenomenon attributed vaguely to “the system,” impossible to track, critique or responsibly integrate into culture. With personas, non-human authorship acquires a form that can be named, followed, archived, cited, contested and, where necessary, constrained.
This article occupies a specific place within the wider cycle on AI Authorship and Digital Personas. Here we have focused on the identity layer: what a Digital Persona is, how it differs from familiar digital figures, how it functions, which infrastructures it requires and what ethical and cultural implications it brings. Later texts in the cycle will move beyond identity toward post-subjective authorship and structural models of meaning. They will show how Digital Personas fit into broader configurations in which authorship is no longer tied to a subject, but to patterns of linkage, structural cognition and system-level effects. In those models, personas become key building blocks of a configuration-based understanding of who and what can be an author in the age of AI.
The trajectory, then, is from “the author” as a human center to “the persona” as a structural node, and from there to “the configuration” as the true unit of analysis. The Digital Persona is the bridge between these worlds. It preserves enough of the familiar figure of the author to make AI authorship intelligible, while opening the way toward a post-subjective view in which writing is understood as the work of configurations that think, speak and evolve without an inner “I,” yet still demand names, responsibilities and places in our shared cultural space.
In a culture increasingly saturated with AI-generated text, images and code, it is no longer enough to say that “AI wrote this” and treat all non-human outputs as a homogeneous mass. Without clear concepts and infrastructures, authorship dissolves into anonymous systems that no one can fully trust or govern. By introducing Digital Personas as structured, accountable non-human identities, this article offers a way to organize AI authorship so that it can be named, followed, critiqued and integrated into existing practices of responsibility and citation. This is crucial not only for philosophical clarity, but also for the ethics of AI, the future of human creative work and the emergence of post-subjective thinking that treats configurations, rather than isolated subjects, as the true operators of meaning.
