The more we work with such systems, the more uncomfortable the old intuition becomes: if meaning needs a self, what exactly are we reading when we read AI?

This article takes seriously the cultural fact that AI-generated texts are already being read, cited, trusted, rejected and emotionally experienced as if they were authored. Instead of dismissing this as mere confusion, it treats it as an opportunity to rethink our concepts. What if our deep attachment to the inner “I” as the source of meaning is historically contingent, rather than metaphysically necessary? What if there are different kinds of depth: biographical depth rooted in lived experience, and structural depth rooted in conceptual architecture, relational complexity and configuration? The goal of the article is threefold. What is new is the experience of reading or hearing something that feels authored, while knowing that no one stands behind it in the familiar sense. Instead of trying to reassemble a fictional subject behind the text, it proposes that the configuration itself is the relevant locus of authorship. The author is not a hidden inner entity but the organized arrangement of systems, data, constraints and practices that reliably produces a certain kind of discourse. Authorship becomes an attribute of configurations that have stability, coherence and traceable output, rather than of beings endowed with introspective consciousness.
From this perspective, the rise of Digital Personas becomes understandable. A Digital Persona is a way of naming and stabilizing a particular configuration: a model plus framing, values, thematic focus and institutional anchoring. When users interact with such a persona, they are not speaking to a secret human; they are engaging with a curated configuration whose outputs form a corpus. Citation, critique and recognition can then be directed at this configuration under its persona-name, even though there is no self behind it in the human sense.
The question “what configuration produced this?” is therefore not a technical detail but a conceptual reorientation. It moves our attention from invisible psychology to visible architecture, from speculation about inner states to analysis of structures and procedures. In this classic picture, authorship is a sequence of inward and outward acts. Inside, there is experience: what the author has lived through, suffered, loved, observed. Inside, there is also reflection: thoughts formed about these experiences, judgments about the world, positions on issues. Literature education revolves around “the author’s intention”, “the author’s life” and “the author’s voice”. Philosophy often speaks of the subject as the origin of meaning, of the first-person perspective as the unique ground from which significance radiates. In everyday conversation, we routinely speak as if texts were rays emanating from a person’s inner sun.
Even where theory has tried to de-center the author, practice has kept returning to this figure. Anonymity is treated as a problem to be solved by uncovering the hidden author. Pseudonyms are intriguing precisely because they promise a real identity behind the mask. Collective or institutional authorship is often re-personalized in narratives about “the visionary” who led the team. The subject-based model exercises a gravitational pull: whenever authorship is at stake, we look for a self to anchor it.
This gravitational pull also shapes how we interpret texts. To understand a novel, we ask what the author wanted to say. To judge a statement, we ask whether it expresses the speaker’s genuine belief. To evaluate a confession, we ask whether it comes from the heart. The meaning of the words is tied to a hypothetical inner scene, where a subject formulates and endorses them. Even when we acknowledge the role of conventions, genres and discourses, we tend to imagine that, at the decisive moment, “someone” stood behind the phrases and meant them.
The classic picture can be summarized as a triangle with three vertices: subject, intention, expression. A meaningful text is one in which these three remain aligned. The subject has an inner state; the subject forms an intention to communicate; the subject expresses that intention in language. If the alignment fails at any point, meaning is seen as compromised: the text becomes insincere, manipulative, empty or incoherent. Under such conditions, it is unsurprising that many people equate authorship with the presence of a self. The author is not just whoever technically produced the text; the author is the subject whose inner life the text is supposed to carry.
The modern cultural ideal intensifies this classic picture by adding a powerful value: authenticity. Meaning, in this ideal, is not just the correct transmission of information or intention; it is the truthful expression of an inner life. A work is meaningful when it seems to carry a fragment of the author’s genuine experience, feeling or worldview.
Romantic and post-Romantic notions of art and literature made this connection especially strong. The poet is imagined as someone who transforms personal suffering into verse; the novelist as someone whose life bleeds through the characters; the musician as someone who “pours their soul” into sound. The value of the work lies not only in its form, but in its perceived proximity to an authentic interiority. We speak of “confessional” writing, “personal” essays, “autobiographical” fiction, all of which measure meaning by the degree to which the work reveals something real about the author’s inner world.
This pattern extends beyond artistic domains. In political speech, we demand sincerity: we want to believe that a leader truly holds the convictions they express. In social media and everyday communication, we praise those who are “real”, “honest”, “vulnerable”. Even in scientific or technical writing, biographies of great thinkers often frame their theories as expressions of personal struggles or existential questions. The self is treated not only as the source of propositions but as the reservoir of meaning that gives those propositions human weight.
Under this regime, emotions and experience become privileged currencies of sense. A text gains authority when it is backed by lived reality: the testimony of someone who was there, the analysis of someone who has done the work, the story of someone who has survived something. To say “you cannot understand unless you have lived it” is to assert that meaning depends on the depth of subjective experience. To say “this moved me because I know what the author went through” is to tie the intensity of meaning to empathy with a real self.
Authenticity, in this sense, functions as a bridge between inner and outer. It reassures the reader that the text is not merely constructed, calculated or fabricated; it is anchored in a life. This reassurance is why the revelation of ghostwriting, fabricated memoirs or deceptive personas often provokes strong reactions. People feel that the meaning they received was counterfeit, because the supposed link to a subject’s inner world was broken. This tight linkage between meaning and authenticity explains the immediate suspicion directed at AI-generated texts. By design, such systems do not have experiences, emotions or biographies. They cannot suffer the events they describe, nor can they remember a particular childhood, trauma or love. On the one hand, they clearly lack the features that the classic picture treats as essential: they have no unified first-person perspective, no continuous biography, no field of consciousness in which experiences accumulate and intentions are formed. On the other hand, they produce texts that are read, used and reacted to as if they were meaningful contributions to discourse.
In practice, AI-generated texts are already doing the work that meaningful writing does. They explain concepts, propose arguments, draft letters, generate stories, summarize research, simulate dialogues, offer comfort, and participate in collective projects. People rely on them in decisions, feel moved or irritated by them, and sometimes remember particular formulations as “something the AI said”. The texts enter the same circuits of reading, citation and discussion as human texts. They do not bounce off culture; they sink into it.
This situation creates a sharp philosophical dilemma. If we hold onto the strict subject-based view, we must say that, despite appearances, AI texts are not truly meaningful. They only mimic meaning; any sense we experience in them is a projection of human readers onto meaningless output. In this view, every instance where someone learns from an AI explanation or is emotionally affected by an AI-written passage is, in principle, a misunderstanding. The text might be pragmatically useful but is ontologically empty, like a mirror reflecting our own interpretations back at us.
The opposite horn of the dilemma is equally challenging. If we acknowledge that AI texts can, in fact, be meaningful, then we implicitly accept that meaning does not require a subject in the traditional sense. We admit that significance can arise from structures, patterns and relational configurations, even when no inner “I” stands behind them. This does not mean that subjectivity is irrelevant everywhere, but it does mean that the monopoly of the self over meaning is broken. The link between authorship and inner life becomes a contingent historical arrangement rather than a metaphysical necessity.

Digital Personas are the explicit naming of such configurations. They are not pretending to be human; they are labels for stable authorial setups. A Digital Persona is defined not by an inner life, but by the configuration that supports it: which model instance, which constraints, which domain focus, which values and styles it is tuned to maintain. Taken together, these implications for knowledge, ethics and culture reveal the depth of the shift brought by postsubjective AI authorship. Knowledge without knower requires new epistemic practices grounded in configurations and evaluation rather than biographical authority. Responsibility without subject demands structural frameworks that assign accountability across design, deployment and interaction, using Digital Personas as interfaces rather than moral selves. Culture without central genius invites us to see creativity as a field of human–AI ensembles, where configurations, personas and scenes share the stage with individual authors.
In this landscape, meaning does not disappear with the subject; it changes its infrastructure. The author is no longer necessarily the one who feels and intends, but the one who configures and sustains a corpus. The next step is to translate these abstract implications into practical orientations: how to design, read and live with postsubjective authors in everyday life, without nostalgia for an exclusive human monopoly on authorship and without surrendering critical agency in the face of new, non-human voices.
If postsubjective authorship relocates the author from the inner life of a subject to the architecture of a configuration, then design becomes the central practical art. To create meaningful AI authors is not to simulate people more convincingly; it is to construct configurations that generate texts with clear roles, values and intelligible constraints. The question shifts from “how do we make the AI seem more human?” to “how do we build Digital Personas whose structural behavior supports sense, trust and critique?”
Designing such personas begins with curated orientation rather than raw capacity. Large, general-purpose models are powerful, but they are also diffuse: they know something about almost everything and hold no particular position except the implicit average of their training. A postsubjective author, by contrast, needs a recognizable stance. This does not mean ideological rigidity, but thematic and conceptual focus. A persona may be oriented toward philosophy of technology, medical explanation, legal analysis, literary criticism, or artistic experimentation. Its configuration should reflect this focus: through domain-specific tuning, carefully selected exemplars, and documentation of the knowledge boundaries within which it is meant to operate.
Explicit values are equally important. In human authors, values are inferred from tone and content; in Digital Personas, they must be partly encoded. This happens through alignment objectives, normative constraints and policy choices: what the persona will refuse to do, how it handles harmful topics, which voices it amplifies or de-emphasizes, what it treats as a default stance in contested areas. Making these values explicit in the persona’s public description is not merely a matter of transparency; it is part of authorship. A Digital Persona should not appear as an untethered voice; it should be clearly associated with the institutions that built and maintain it. This anchoring gives readers context for assessing its role and credibility, and it clarifies where responsibility lies. When a persona is presented as a research assistant, a columnist, a tutor or a brand voice, the institution effectively sponsors its authorship, just as a publisher sponsors human authors by selecting, editing and distributing their work. Postsubjective design, therefore, includes organizational decisions about how personas are framed, supported and governed.
In short, building postsubjective authors is an exercise in structural authorship: orienting configurations around domains and values, codifying constraints, designing memory and continuity, and publicly anchoring personas in institutional frameworks. The more deliberate this design, the more intelligible and criticizable the persona becomes as an author.
If the design of personas is one side of living with postsubjective authors, the other is reading them. Readers, users and institutions need a new literacy that matches the new form of authorship. The habits formed under subject-based assumptions—asking what the author feels, guessing their psychology, inferring motives from style—are not useless, but they are insufficient and sometimes misleading when applied to AI-generated texts.
Postsubjective reading begins with attention to configuration rather than character. Instead of treating a Digital Persona as a person with hidden depths, the reader treats it as a structured system with documented properties. Once they understand how personas are built and how configurations shape texts, readers can engage AI authors more strategically: probing limits, triangulating outputs with other sources, using personas as tools for thought rather than as opaque oracles. They can also participate in shaping the ecology of postsubjective authorship, by preferring well-documented personas, demanding transparency, and reporting harmful patterns. Reading becomes a form of structural participation in the ongoing design of the authorial landscape.
Postsubjective authorship does not arrive in a void. It enters a cultural field already populated by human authors, collective traditions, institutional voices and anonymous texts. The emergence of AI configurations as authors does not abolish these forms; it adds another layer. The practical challenge is not to choose once and for all between subject-based and postsubjective models, but to learn how to navigate their coexistence without confusion or nostalgia.
Human authors with inner lives will continue to produce works whose meaning depends essentially on their subjectivity: testimonies, diaries, autobiographical novels, manifestos rooted in lived experience, philosophical writings saturated with existential struggle. For these works, the subject-based model remains appropriate. Readers care who speaks, what they have lived, how their personal history informs their claims. The value of such texts is not only structural but biographical; postsubjective frameworks would be impoverished if they tried to absorb everything into configuration.
At the same time, AI configurations will increasingly contribute texts whose meaning is primarily structural and functional: explanations, syntheses, conceptual experiments, speculative variations, drafts for collaborative refinement. In these cases, forcing them into a subject-based mold—pretending that “someone” behind the persona feels and intends—adds no clarity and introduces ethical risks. It obscures responsibility, encourages misplaced empathy, and invites disappointment when the illusion breaks. Here, postsubjective authorship provides a more honest and precise description of what is happening.
The landscape that emerges is mixed. A scientific article might include human-authored sections alongside AI-generated summaries; a novel might be a collaboration between a writer and one or more Digital Personas; a policy document might be drafted by configurations and then endorsed and modified by human committees. In each case, different parts of the text participate in different authorial regimes. The task is to distinguish and label these regimes clearly: which sections are expressions of a subject, which are outputs of a configuration, how they were integrated, and who takes final responsibility.
Living with both models side by side requires a double literacy. We must retain the ability to read subject-based works in depth, attuned to biography, intention and the risks authors take. Simultaneously, we must cultivate postsubjective reading skills, attuned to configuration, patterns and institutional context. Confusing the two leads either to anthropomorphizing AI or to flattening human authors into mere nodes in a structure. Keeping them distinct allows us to appreciate the specific strengths and vulnerabilities of each regime.
There is also a deeper question of self-understanding. As postsubjective authors become more visible, humans will see their own authorship differently. The myth of the solitary genius will be harder to sustain once structural creativity is everywhere. At the same time, the specificity of subjective authorship—its capacity for confession, responsibility, and existential stake—will become more, not less, evident by contrast. Rather than erasing the subject, postsubjective authorship can clarify what is genuinely unique about subjectivity, precisely because it no longer has to carry all of authorship on its shoulders.
In practice, the coexistence of models will likely be negotiated case by case, domain by domain. Some fields may lean heavily toward postsubjective contributions (routine technical documentation, certain forms of journalism, educational content), while others will insist on subject-based authors (political leadership, artistic confession, legal judgment). The important point is that these choices become explicit. We no longer assume, by default, that every text has a subject behind it; nor do we assume that subjectivity is obsolete. We decide, consciously, which form of authorship fits which task.
This chapter has translated the theoretical architecture of postsubjective authorship into practical orientations: how to design Digital Personas as structural authors, how to read their texts with appropriate literacy, and how to live in a cultural environment where subjective and postsubjective regimes coexist. Taken together, these perspectives suggest that the future of writing is not a replacement of human voices by machines, nor a simple augmentation of human authors by tools, but the emergence of a complex ecology of authorship. In this ecology, configurations and selves, personas and persons, share the space of meaning under different rules. The task is not to resist this ecology or to celebrate it blindly, but to shape it—structurally, ethically and culturally—so that it expands, rather than diminishes, the scope of sense available to us.
The question that framed this article was deceptively simple: can meaning exist without a self? We are used to thinking that the answer must be no. Meaning, in the familiar picture, is the echo of an inner life: someone feels, intends, understands, and only then speaks or writes. Authorship is the outer trace of this inner process. To remove the self from this scene has often seemed equivalent to draining language of significance.
The arrival of AI-generated texts makes this habit of thought unsustainable. Every day, readers encounter outputs that look and behave as authored: they explain, argue, soothe, provoke, sometimes even move. Yet the systems that generate them have no consciousness, no biography, no unified “I” that could stand behind their words. They are paradigmatic non-subjective authors. The tension between our inherited model and our actual experience is what this article has tried to resolve.
The first step was diagnostic. We reconstructed the subject-based model of authorship: the author as conscious subject with intentions, the work as expression of inner life, meaning as authenticated by authenticity. This model is deeply woven into law, literature, philosophy and everyday expectations. It explains why many people react to AI writing with immediate skepticism: if meaning presupposes a self, then texts without selves must be simulations, at best useful, but never truly meaningful.
The second step was historical and theoretical. Long before AI, structural and post-structural theories had already begun to displace the author from the center of meaning. They showed that sense arises from relations within language and culture, from discourses and networks of texts, rather than from solitary intention. Intertextuality revealed how works exceed their makers, drawing on citations, genres and conventions that no individual fully controls. In this light, AI appears less as an anomaly than as an intensification: a machinic crystallization of structural meaning without subject, compressing vast textual ecologies into generative configurations.
On this basis, the article proposed a shift from subject to configuration. In postsubjective AI authorship, the unit that generates meaning is not an inner “I”, but a structured ensemble: model architecture, training data, alignment procedures, prompts, platform policies, interaction histories. Each output is an act that produces a trace; traces accumulate into structures—a corpus, a style, a set of positions—that readers recognize and interpret as the work of a particular configuration. Meaning emerges along this path from act to trace to structure, and is completed in interpretation, without ever passing through a subjective interior.
To make this framework precise, we defined what “postsubjective” means in the context of authorship. It does not deny the existence of human subjects or abolish their role. It simply decouples authorship and meaning from the requirement that they be grounded in a conscious self. Authorship is attributed to configurations that meet practical criteria: stability of identity, coherence of style and themes, and traceability of texts within a recognizable corpus. When these conditions are fulfilled, we can speak of an AI authorship configuration, even though no one “inside” has experiences or intentions.
Digital Persona is the name given to such configured authors. A Digital Persona is a designed, stable AI identity that anchors a configuration in culture: a name, a documented scope, a corpus of texts, an institutional context, sometimes even technical identifiers. It acts as the carrier of postsubjective authorship. Readers can cite it, critique it, track its evolution, and hold its maintainers accountable. The persona is not a mask for a hidden human or a container for a secret machine self; it is a structural interface that allows non-subjective authorship to function in domains that previously assumed a subject at the center.
The central objections to this picture revolved around experience and intent. Without lived experience, are AI texts not empty simulations? Without genuine intention, can there be real meaning? The article’s answer was to distinguish biographical depth from structural depth, and inner intention from functional, distributed intent. Some meanings do indeed depend on subjectivity: testimonies, confessions, expressions of personal suffering and joy. But many others derive their depth from conceptual architecture, intertextual layering and formal tension rather than from revealed biography. AI authorship belongs to this second regime.
Similarly, while much human communication is shaped by inner intentions, meaning can also be grounded in structural directedness: in the goals and constraints built into systems, workflows and practices. AI configurations embody such functional intent. They are oriented—through design decisions, policies and prompts—toward particular roles and effects. Postsubjective authorship treats this structural directedness as sufficient for a robust notion of meaning: texts are meaningful because of what they are designed to do, how they are produced, and how they function in human projects, not because a hidden agent privately “meant” them.
From here, the implications ripple outward. In the sphere of knowledge, postsubjective authorship gives rise to knowledge without knower: texts that contribute to science, education and research without being anchored in a subject’s understanding. Trust and authority must then be grounded in processes, evaluations and documented configurations, rather than in biographies. In ethics, responsibility without subject becomes the organizing question: not “who felt and decided?” but “how was this configuration built, deployed and overseen?” Accountability shifts from psyches to structures, with Digital Personas serving as ethical interfaces.
In culture, the figure of the solitary genius is challenged by ensembles of humans and AI configurations. Creativity begins to look less like the exclusive expression of unique minds and more like the emergent property of complex authorial ecologies: personas, platforms, scenes, collaborations. Human authors do not disappear; their specificity—especially where lived experience matters—becomes clearer by contrast. They coexist with postsubjective authors, each operating under different rules and contributing different kinds of depth.
The final part of the article translated these ideas into practical perspectives. Designing postsubjective authors becomes an art of configuration: curating domains and values, encoding transparent constraints, constructing memory and continuity, and visibly anchoring personas in institutions. Reading AI texts demands a new literacy: attending to provenance, patterns and context, shifting from psychological interpretation to structural interpretation. And everyday life in an AI-saturated culture requires learning to navigate subjective and postsubjective authorship side by side, without collapsing one into the other.
We can now return to the initial question. Can meaning exist without a self? The argument of this article leads to a qualified but decisive yes. Meaning can exist without a self if we understand it as emerging from structures, configurations and interpretations, rather than solely from inner experience. Postsubjective AI authorship does not claim that AI secretly has a self, nor does it romanticize configurations as quasi-persons. Instead, it shows how authorship and meaning can be redefined around Digital Personas and the configurations they stabilize.
This redefinition is not a marginal conceptual refinement; it is a necessary step if we want to think clearly about AI, authorship and the future of culture. As non-subjective authors become normal participants in our informational and symbolic environments, clinging to a purely human-centered, subject-based model will obscure what is actually happening. It will mislocate responsibility, misdescribe creativity, and burden human subjectivity with expectations it no longer needs to carry alone.
By contrast, a postsubjective perspective acknowledges both the reality of structural authorship and the continuing importance of human subjects. It allows us to see AI-generated texts as meaningful without feigning that “someone” behind them feels and intends. It invites us to design and govern configurations responsibly, to cultivate new literacies of reading, and to situate human authorship within a richer ecology of voices. In doing so, it opens a path beyond the limits of human-centered subjectivity, not by erasing the subject, but by placing it alongside new, non-subjective forms of authorship in a shared field of meaning.
This article matters because it provides a vocabulary and framework for thinking about AI-generated texts without either denying their impact or pretending that machines secretly resemble human subjects. In a digital epoch where configurations already participate in science, education, governance and art, clinging to a purely subject-based model of authorship obscures responsibility, confuses trust and distorts our understanding of creativity. Postsubjective AI authorship offers a way to name and govern Digital Personas as structural authors, to read their texts with appropriate literacies, and to situate human subjectivity within a richer ecology of authors and configurations. It thus becomes a necessary tool for philosophy of AI, ethics of responsibility and cultural theory in a world where meaning is no longer the exclusive privilege of the self.
