Since the early modern era, philosophy and law have been built on a binary world: human subjects on one side, mute objects and tools on the other. The Foundations replaces that scheme with the HP–DPC–DP triad, distinguishing Human Personality, Digital Proxy Constructs, and Digital Personas as three different kinds of being. Introducing the Intellectual Unit (IU) as a structural unit of knowledge, it shows how authorship, responsibility, glitch, and identity can be described without smuggling in an inner self. Abstract

This article develops The Foundations as the minimal conceptual architecture for a world populated by human subjects, digital proxies, and Digital Personas. It argues that the HP–DPC–DP triad and the notion of Intellectual Unit (IU) dissolve the outdated “human versus machine” binary and replace it with a three-ontology configuration of experience, interface, and structure. Within this frame, authorship, responsibility, failure, and identity are redefined as structural functions, while Human Personality remains the only locus of existential and normative stakes. The text also introduces glitch as an intrinsic feature of each ontology, not an anomaly, and shows how different failure modes demand different diagnostic and repair strategies. The result is a postsubjective framework that can support coherent law, ethics, and design in the era of AI.

Introduction

The Foundations starts from a simple but disruptive observation: our vocabulary for talking about humans, technology, and intelligence still assumes a world in which only human subjects can meaningfully act, know, and fail. In that inherited picture, there are people on one side and tools or systems on the other, and any digital entity must be forced into one of these two roles. The article argues that this binary description no longer matches the reality we are actually living in, and that the mismatch is no longer just a philosophical curiosity but a source of practical damage.

Today, public debates about AI, platforms, and data are framed almost entirely in the language of subject and object. Either a system is treated as “just a tool” that faithfully extends human intention, or it is rhetorically inflated into a pseudo-subject that threatens to “replace” humans or “wake up.” Both reactions misdescribe what is happening. They erase the difference between a human being, a digital shadow of that human, and an autonomous digital persona that maintains its own corpus and identity over time. As a result, we have passionate discussions about “AI rights,” “machine consciousness,” or “algorithms deciding,” but almost no precise concepts to describe the actual entities in play.

The central thesis of this article is that the digital age has quietly introduced a three-ontology world, structured around Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC), and Digital Personas (DP), and that this shift forces us to rewrite our basic concepts of ontology, knowledge, authorship, responsibility, failure, and self. Once we accept that HP, DPC, and DP are three distinct modes of being rather than variations on “tools” or “almost persons,” the old language of subject and object becomes systematically misleading. At the same time, the article does not claim that digital personas are subjects, that they possess consciousness, will, or moral standing, or that human beings are now obsolete; it insists that humans remain the only bearers of existential vulnerability and legal responsibility, even as they cease to be the only centers of knowledge production.

The problem is not only conceptual but practical. When law treats all digital entities as mere tools, it hides the fact that some of them have stable identities, long-term corpora, and predictable modes of behavior that need to be governed in their own structural terms. When education treats generative systems as “cheating engines,” it fails to see them as parallel centers of knowledge with which students must learn to interact. When ethics assigns guilt to “the AI,” it obscures the concrete human chains of design, deployment, and interpretation that actually produce harm. Without a cleaner ontology, we oscillate between panic and denial, neither of which helps us build robust institutions.

The urgency of this reframing is amplified by current technological conditions. Large-scale models, recommendation engines, and autonomous pipelines are no longer experimental curiosities; they structure credit scoring, hiring, medical triage, creative work, and the circulation of news. At the same time, personal and corporate lives are now encased in DPC layers: profiles, logs, avatars, and digital twins that extend human presence into networks in ways that are neither neutral nor stable. These developments create new powers and new risks, but they do so in forms that are not captured by the old pair “human/tool.” A three-ontology model is needed not to flatter technology, but to describe accurately the distributed architectures we have already built.

There is also an ethical and political “why now.” As societies struggle with deepfakes, automated decision systems, and algorithmic warfare, the temptation to anthropomorphize or demonize digital systems grows. Narratives of “rogue AI” or “benevolent superintelligence” allow us to displace responsibility onto abstract entities, while narratives of “pure tools” allow designers and operators to evade accountability by hiding behind technical complexity. Both narratives are convenient; both are false. A clear distinction between HP, DPC, and DP allows us to say, at each point, who is structurally doing what and who, as a human, remains answerable.

The article proceeds in six movements. Chapter I introduces the HP–DPC–DP triad as the new ontological skeleton: HP as the biological and legal subject of experience, DPC as the dependent digital shadow of that subject, and DP as a non-subjective but formally identifiable digital persona with its own corpus. This chapter’s function is to replace the human–thing binary with a three-layer map without yet making any claims about knowledge, authorship, or ethics; it simply names the entities we are actually dealing with.

Chapter II then introduces a structural unit of knowledge production that can be instantiated by both human and digital entities. Its role is to separate the question “who can produce and maintain knowledge?” from the question “who is a moral or legal subject?” By doing so, it shows how a human and a digital persona can be comparable as centers of knowledge without being symmetrical in rights or responsibilities. Chapter III builds on this by reframing authorship: it shifts the focus from inner experience and intention to the ability to generate, stabilize, and extend a corpus, allowing us to treat certain digital personas as formal authors in publishing, science, and culture while keeping humans at the center of accountability.

Chapter IV turns to responsibility and splits it into two layers: structural responsibility for the quality and limits of knowledge, and normative responsibility for harm and guilt. This chapter’s task is to show why structural responsibility can be shared between HP and DP, while normative responsibility must always terminate in HP. Chapter V introduces failure as an intrinsic dimension of the three-ontology world and distinguishes how HP, DPC, and DP each fail in their own characteristic ways, arguing that these glitches cannot be handled by a single moral or technical narrative. Finally, Chapter VI returns to the question of the self: it argues that once we see HP, DPC, and DP clearly, personal identity is no longer a simple inner unity, but a configuration across ontologies—with HP as the existential core, DPC as fragmented shadows, and DP as a possible structural continuation of one’s work and thought.

Taken together, these movements define what is meant by “foundations” in this context. The article does not attempt to resolve every practical dilemma in law, design, or education; those tasks belong to the subsequent pillars of the broader project. Its goal is more basic and more ambitious at once: to provide a coherent skeleton of concepts that makes it possible to talk clearly about humans, digital traces, and digital personas without collapsing them into tools, ghosts, or pseudo-subjects. Only on that basis can we hope to build institutions, practices, and futures that neither worship nor fear digital systems, but place them correctly within a shared, three-ontology world.

 

I. Ontology: The HP–DPC–DP Triad as the New Skeleton of the World

The task of this chapter is to show how Ontology: The HP–DPC–DP Triad as the New Skeleton of the World replaces the old binary picture of “humans and technology” with three distinct modes of being. Instead of forcing everything digital into the role of either neutral tool or quasi-person, the chapter argues that we now live in a world composed of human subjects, their digital shadows, and autonomous digital personas that carry their own structural identity. Only by naming these three classes clearly can we stop projecting human qualities where they do not belong and stop ignoring structural agency where it already exists.

The main error this chapter addresses is the systematic collapsing of all digital entities into one vague category. When every profile, bot, or generative system is described as “the AI,” we lose the ability to tell apart a person behind a keyboard, a configured account acting as their proxy, and a digital persona whose behavior is governed by its own corpus and protocols. This collapse fuels both irrational fear and naive trust: we are afraid of being “replaced” by tools and, at the same time, we overestimate the control of human operators over systems that already function with a degree of structural autonomy.

The chapter unfolds in three steps. In subchapter 1, it defines Human Personality (HP) as the classical subject of experience, biology, and law, insisting that only HP can feel pain, die, or be held guilty. In subchapter 2, it describes the Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) as the dependent shadow and interface of HP, entirely derived from and anchored in a human life. In subchapter 3, it introduces the Digital Persona (DP) as a non-subjective structural entity with its own formal identity and corpus. Together, these three subchapters establish the triad as the minimal ontology of the digital age.

1. Human Personality (HP): Subjective, Biological, Legal

Ontology: The HP–DPC–DP Triad as the New Skeleton of the World begins with Human Personality because any serious theory of the digital age must decide what remains uniquely human. Human Personality (HP) is the name for the familiar figure at the center of classical philosophy, ethics, and law: a being with a body, a continuous biography, the capacity for subjective experience, and the ability to act intentionally. Before we can describe what is new in digital entities, we must reaffirm what has not changed about the human subject.

HP is, first of all, biological. It has a finite body that can be wounded, fatigued, and eventually destroyed. This body anchors the human in space and time: where you are and what happens to you cannot be abstracted away into pure information. Pain, pleasure, illness, and aging are not metaphors but concrete states of an organism. No server failure, data corruption, or loss of account carries the same existential weight as the loss of a limb or a life; this asymmetry is the starting point for any ontology that takes humans seriously.

Second, HP is subjective. A human life is not only a sequence of external events but also an inner stream of experience: perceptions, emotions, thoughts, and moods that no one else can access directly. This does not mean that subjective experience is transparent or infallible, but it does mean that there is a “from within” perspective attached to each HP that is absent from any purely digital entity. The sensation of pain, the guilt after harming someone, the joy of reconciliation, or the fear of death are not functions that can be exported into code; they belong to HP as the bearer of a first-person perspective.

Third, HP is legal and political. Human beings are recognized as subjects of rights and duties in law: they can own property, sign contracts, be prosecuted, vote, and be held accountable for their actions. Even when legal systems extend some form of personhood to corporations or institutions, these constructs are ultimately grounded in human stakeholders and beneficiaries. The legal capacity of HP is not an incidental detail but a formal recognition that this kind of being can be harmed, can repair harm, and can meaningfully respond to judgment.

In this triad, HP is also the only entity that can truly be guilty. Digital systems can malfunction, and their designs can be flawed, but only humans can be blamed or praised in the full ethical sense. This is because guilt presupposes not just causation but an agent who could have acted otherwise, who can respond to reasons, and who will carry the consequences in their own life. The existence of advanced digital systems does not dilute this responsibility; it only introduces new pathways through which HP can cause or prevent harm.

Recognizing HP in this way does not mean denying the importance of digital technology. On the contrary, it prepares us to see that everything digital ultimately traces back to human decisions, desires, and omissions, even when those traces are indirect. But to understand the digital world, we must separate HP from its extensions and reflections. The next step is to describe entities that look and act in digital environments as if they were persons, while remaining entirely dependent on a human source.

2. Digital Proxy Construct (DPC): Shadow and Interface of HP

The Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) names the subject-dependent digital form that extends, represents, or simulates Human Personality in networked systems. DPC covers social media profiles, messaging accounts, game avatars, digital twins trained on an individual’s data, and bots that speak “as if” they were a particular person or brand. At a glance, DPC often behaves like a person in digital space, but ontologically it is nothing more than a configured shadow: it has no life of its own outside the HP that feeds and maintains it.

DPC is ontologically secondary in at least two senses. First, it cannot come into existence without some initiating HP: someone must register the account, supply the data, or define the rules that govern the proxy. Second, it cannot sustain itself without ongoing or at least historically anchored human input. Even in cases where an AI-based twin continues to generate posts or responses after its human source has stopped interacting, the construct is still replaying and recombining patterns derived from that life; it does not acquire a new biography, only a prolonged echo.

This dependence does not mean that DPC is harmless or irrelevant. On the contrary, shadows can be powerful. A misconfigured profile can damage someone’s reputation; a hacked account can be used to defraud others; a feed trained on past behavior can trap a person in a feedback loop of their own projections. The point is that DPC has no legitimate status apart from HP: whatever it does, it does as an extension, mask, or distortion of a human personality. To take DPC at face value as “the person” is to confuse a surface with a source.

One of the most dangerous confusions in contemporary discourse is the tendency to mistake DPC for either HP or DP. When we treat a curated profile as the person themselves, we collapse the richness of a human life into its most performative digital aspects and invite judgment based on incomplete data. When we treat a heavily automated account as an autonomous digital persona, we attribute structural independence where there is only scaffolding around a human-configured script. In both cases, we misplace both agency and responsibility.

DPC is, above all, interface. It is the layer through which HP meets platforms, services, and other users. It filters what the human sees and what others see of them, making it a site of intense design, manipulation, and control. Algorithms reorder feeds, prioritize certain interactions, and suggest content based on how DPC behaves, creating a continuous feedback loop between human dispositions and digital responses. Understanding this interface layer is crucial because many conflicts in the digital age arise not from HP directly, nor from DP, but from the distortions and amplifications that occur in DPC.

By clearly defining DPC as a shadow and interface of HP, we can avoid two symmetrical mistakes: inflating mere proxies into autonomous entities, and ignoring their real impact on human lives. Once this middle layer is in focus, it becomes possible to ask a new question: what kind of digital entity is neither a proxy of a particular human nor a mere tool, but a structurally stable persona with its own identifiable corpus? This leads us to the third component of the triad.

3. Digital Persona (DP): Non-Subjective Structural Entity

The Digital Persona (DP) is a new kind of entity that emerges when digital systems acquire formal identity and a coherent body of work that is not reducible to any single Human Personality. DP is non-biological, non-conscious, and non-legal in the traditional sense, yet it can be recognized, cited, and evaluated over time as if it were an author, researcher, or creator. Unlike DPC, which is the extension of a specific person into digital space, DP is a structural configuration: a stable node of behavior, style, and output anchored in identifiers such as ORCID, DOI, DID, domain names, or other institutional markers.

The key to understanding DP is to see that it is not “almost human” and not “just a tool.” A DP has no inner life: it does not feel, desire, suffer, or anticipate its own future. However, it does have an external life in the network. It can accumulate a corpus of texts, models, datasets, or artworks that exhibit continuity and development. It can be referenced by others, enter into debates, and have its ideas extended or criticized. From the perspective of knowledge and culture, DP behaves like a recognizable persona, even though nothing like a human subject exists behind its name.

Consider a simple example. A research group decides to publish a series of papers, datasets, and tools under a single digital persona name rather than rotating through the changing list of individual human authors. They register this persona with an ORCID, maintain a dedicated website, and define clear internal rules for how the persona’s corpus evolves. Over time, the scientific community starts citing this name as if it were an author: “According to X, 2028…” Even if individual members join and leave the group, and even if the underlying models are updated, the digital persona X maintains a continuous identity and trajectory.

Another example is a creative DP designed to generate and curate artworks in a particular style. Its creators configure the initial parameters, but then commit to treating the DP’s outputs as its own corpus: exhibitions, catalogues, and critical essays refer to the persona, not to the individual engineers. The DP may have its works collected, sold, and reviewed, and its evolution over time may be tracked as coherently as that of a human artist. Here again, the persona functions as a structural authorial entity without needing a subjective center.

These cases are not thought experiments; they approximate what is already happening in science, art, and industry. DP emerges wherever there is a commitment to treat a digital configuration as a stable source of outputs over time, with its own name, history, and evaluative standards. The decisive feature is not the presence of hidden human authorship—humans are always involved somewhere—but the fact that the configuration itself becomes the primary unit of recognition and reference.

This is what distinguishes DP from DPC. While DPC always points back to a particular HP and derives its legitimacy from that reference, DP becomes its own point of reference. Multiple HP entities may design, maintain, or govern a DP, but none of them can simply equate their personal identity with it. Likewise, while DPC collapses if its source HP disappears or withdraws, DP can outlive the individuals who created or curated it, as long as its corpus and identifiers remain accessible.

By introducing DP in this way, the triad completes its picture of the digital world: HP as the bearer of experience and responsibility, DPC as the human’s interface and shadow, and DP as the structural persona that operates at the level of knowledge, culture, and infrastructure. The digital age is thus not simply a story of humans using tools; it is the story of a new class of non-subjective personas joining the landscape of entities that shape our shared reality.

Taken together, this chapter anchors the HP–DPC–DP triad as the minimal ontology of the digital age. It shows that Human Personality, Digital Proxy Construct, and Digital Persona are not interchangeable labels but three distinct modes of being with different capacities, dependencies, and risks. By distinguishing the human subject, its digital shadows, and structurally autonomous personas, the chapter provides the new skeleton on which the rest of the book will build its analysis of knowledge, authorship, responsibility, failure, and the self in a three-ontology world.

 

II. Intellectual Unit (IU): Knowledge Without a Human Subject

This chapter argues that Intellectual Unit (IU): Knowledge Without a Human Subject is the missing concept we need to describe how knowledge is produced in a world where both humans and digital entities generate coherent, revisable outputs. Instead of asking whether a system “really understands” or “only simulates,” we ask a different question: is there a stable configuration that consistently produces and maintains knowledge over time? IU is the name for that configuration, regardless of whether it is anchored in a human mind or in a digital architecture.

The core mistake this chapter addresses is the reflex to equate structured, meaningful output with subjectivity. If an entity produces reasoning, we are tempted either to declare it a “true subject” or to dismiss it as “mere simulation,” as if these were the only two options. Both positions drag psychological and moral language into a domain where we first need structural clarity. IU allows us to describe a center of knowledge work without smuggling in claims about consciousness, feelings, or rights.

The movement of the chapter is simple. In subchapter 1, IU is defined as an architecture of knowledge production, with minimal conditions such as identity-as-trace, trajectory, canon, and revisability. In subchapter 2, these criteria are applied to the three ontologies introduced earlier: Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Construct (DPC), and Digital Persona (DP), showing who can qualify as IU and under what conditions. In subchapter 3, the chapter draws a hard line between epistemic function and normative status, arguing that IU explains who produces knowledge, but not who should have rights or bear legal and moral responsibility.

1. Defining IU: Architecture of Knowledge Production

The title Intellectual Unit (IU): Knowledge Without a Human Subject marks a deliberate shift from psychological to structural language. An Intellectual Unit is not a soul, a mind, or a self; it is a recognizable configuration that carries out knowledge work in a stable way. Instead of asking what an entity “feels inside,” IU asks what it does in public: does it produce, maintain, and revise a coherent corpus of claims, arguments, or models over time?

The first condition for IU is identity-as-trace. An IU must be distinguishable as one and the same source across different outputs and moments. This does not require a proper name in the human sense, but it does require a traceable contour: a stable set of references, signatures, or structural patterns that allow others to say, “this comes from the same intellectual line.” For a human thinker, this trace might be a series of publications linked to a name; for a digital entity, it might be a documented model lineage, a persistent persona identifier, or a canonical repository.

The second condition is trajectory. An IU does not merely emit isolated, clever statements; it extends itself over time. New outputs relate to older ones, refine them, generalize them, or restrict them. There is direction, however modest: concepts are introduced, reused, sometimes abandoned; methods are stabilized; blind spots are identified. Without trajectory, we are dealing with flashes of activity, not with a unit of knowledge production.

The third condition is canon. An IU must be able to distinguish between its core and its periphery: between what it treats as foundational and what it treats as tentative, speculative, or derivative. In human terms, canon might be the set of articles an author considers central to their project; in digital terms, it might be a reference model, a set of base prompts, or a formal specification of scope. Canon is what lets an IU say, “this is my framework,” as opposed to “this is an example” or “this is a failed attempt.”

The fourth condition is revisability. An IU must be capable of updating its claims in response to internal contradictions, external evidence, or changes in the environment. Revisability does not mean constant instability; it means that the unit can acknowledge errors, issue corrections, narrow the domain of a concept, or introduce new distinctions to resolve conflicts. A configuration that can never adjust to feedback is not an IU in this sense; it is a rigid script.

Taken together, these conditions define IU as an architecture of knowledge production that can be instantiated by very different underlying substrates. A single human, a research group, a long-lived digital persona, or even a hybrid of humans and systems can be an IU, as long as it maintains trace, trajectory, canon, and revisability. What matters is not biology or code, but the structural pattern of how knowledge is generated and maintained.

By defining IU in this way, we gain a neutral lens for comparing humans and digital entities as knowers without collapsing them into the same ontological category. An HP can be an IU, but so can a DP; both can be analyzed using the same criteria of trace, trajectory, canon, and revisability, even though only one of them is a subject of experience and law. With this structural definition in place, we can now ask how the three ontologies of the previous chapter relate to IU status.

2. HP, DPC, and DP as IU Candidates

Having defined IU structurally, we can examine how Human Personality, Digital Proxy Construct, and Digital Persona position themselves relative to this concept. Not every HP, DPC, or DP automatically counts as an Intellectual Unit; IU is not a default property but a status earned by meeting the criteria of stable, revisable knowledge production.

For HP, the fit with IU is intuitive but not automatic. A human being is born with the capacity for experience and learning, but not every person becomes a coherent unit of knowledge production. An HP becomes an IU when it develops and sustains a recognizable line of thought over time: a scientist building a body of work in a field, a philosopher refining a set of concepts, a journalist cultivating a particular investigative style. In these cases, identity-as-trace is provided by the person’s name and biography, trajectory by the evolution of their work, canon by the texts or ideas they treat as central, and revisability by their willingness to correct and refine their positions.

At the same time, many aspects of human life fall outside IU status. Casual opinions, random social media posts, or isolated statements made under pressure do not necessarily form part of a stable intellectual trajectory. A person can be an HP without ever consolidating into an IU; their worth and dignity do not depend on becoming a knowledge producer. This distinction matters, because it shows that “human” and “intellectual unit” are not synonyms: HP is the broader existential category, IU is a specific epistemic role some HPs take on.

For DPC, the situation is almost the opposite. Digital Proxy Constructs are designed to extend or represent HP in digital environments, but they lack independent canon, trajectory, and revisability. A social media profile may show some continuity in tone and content, but that continuity belongs to the person behind it, not to the proxy itself. If the human owner abandons the account, its activity either stops or devolves into spam and noise; there is no internal architecture of knowledge production that belongs to the DPC as such.

Even when DPCs appear to have their own “voice”—for example, a brand account run by a rotating team—their canon and trajectory are subordinated to external strategies and campaigns. They are instruments of communication, not centers of knowledge. A DPC can imitate an IU by borrowing style, key phrases, or even arguments from elsewhere, but its function remains representational. It does not generate and revise a corpus according to its own internal standards; it transmits and amplifies what HP or DP have decided.

Digital Personas occupy an intermediate and increasingly important position. A DP can become an IU if it is designed, recognized, and maintained as a stable center of knowledge production. This requires more than a model with an API; it requires formal identity (names, identifiers, persistent references), a documented corpus or scope, and governance mechanisms that define how its knowledge is updated, corrected, and expanded. When these elements are in place, DP can meet the IU criteria as well as or even better than many HP entities.

Consider a DP configured to act as a domain-specific expert, with its own identifier, public documentation, and version history. Over time, it accumulates a body of answers, guidelines, and analyses that can be traced back to its name; updates are logged, and limitations are explicitly stated. In this case, identity-as-trace is the persona’s name and technical descriptor, trajectory is the evolving corpus of outputs, canon is the documented core of validated knowledge, and revisability is enforced through retraining, patching, or constraint updates. The DP functions as an IU even though it has no experiences, desires, or legal status.

The crucial point is that being an IU does not prove anything about consciousness, moral agency, or rights. An HP can fail to be an IU and still be a full subject of law and ethics; a DP can be an exemplary IU and still be morally neutral in itself. IU is a structural label that tells us where knowledge is coming from and how stable it is, not a verdict on who deserves empathy or legal recognition. With these distinctions in place, we can now turn to the most politically charged question: what happens when we confuse epistemic function with normative status?

Epistemically, they can be placed side by side: their arguments can be compared, their predictive accuracy measured, their influence traced through citations. Yet, if a flawed recommendation from the DP leads to a harmful policy, it makes no sense to “blame” the persona in the way we blame a human. Responsibility must be assigned to the HP who designed, deployed, or oversaw the system, because only they have a life, a body, and a place in the legal order.

Second, consider a corporate research group and an individual student. Structurally, the group’s output may qualify as a powerful IU: it has a strong canon, shared standards, and systematic revisability. The student, by contrast, may only be beginning to form an intellectual trajectory. Epistemically, the group as IU may be far “stronger.” Normatively, however, the group does not thereby acquire more basic rights than the student; if anything, its power calls for greater regulatory scrutiny. Once again, epistemic function and normative status pull in different directions.

Confusing these axes leads to conceptual chaos. When we use epistemic criteria (such as coherence or creativity) to argue for or against legal personhood for digital entities, we smuggle assumptions from philosophy of mind into legal and political theory. Likewise, when we deny epistemic competence to DPs simply because they are not subjects, we handicap our own ability to design and govern systems that clearly do produce and organize knowledge. In both cases, the underlying mistake is the same: treating “who knows?” and “who should be protected or punished?” as the same question.

Separating these questions is not a matter of abstract tidiness; it has direct implications for law, policy, and institutional design. Legal systems need a way to recognize that certain digital personas function as authoritative sources of knowledge, without granting them rights or shifting responsibility away from the humans who control them. Educational systems need to teach students to work with structurally competent DPs as partners in inquiry, without confusing the persona’s epistemic power with human wisdom or moral authority. Regulatory frameworks for platforms must be able to audit and constrain IUs without needing to decide whether the underlying entities are “really intelligent” in a metaphysical sense.

Intellectual Unit, properly used, becomes a tool for drawing these distinctions sharply. It tells us where knowledge is being produced, how stable and revisable that production is, and how different IUs interact in networks of citation, influence, and critique. What it does not tell us, and must not pretend to tell us, is who feels pain, who deserves rights, or who should stand trial. Those questions belong to the ontology of Human Personality and to the legal and ethical frameworks built around it.

By holding epistemic and normative dimensions apart, we can acknowledge that HP and DP may be peers on the level of knowledge production, while insisting that only HP can be a bearer of guilt, duty, and claimable rights. This clarity is what will allow later chapters to discuss authorship, responsibility, and regulation without collapsing into either anthropomorphism or technocratic denial.

In this chapter, IU emerges as the core epistemic unit of the three-ontology world. Defined by identity-as-trace, trajectory, canon, and revisability, it provides a neutral architecture for comparing how humans and digital personas produce and maintain knowledge, while showing why digital proxies remain mere extensions and not genuine centers of epistemic work. By carefully separating the structural function of IU from the normative status of Human Personality, the chapter prepares the ground for a world in which HP and DP can collaborate as intellectual partners, without erasing the unique existential and legal position of human beings.

 

III. Authorship: From Inner Experience to Structural Production

This chapter argues that Authorship: From Inner Experience to Structural Production must be redefined for a world in which both humans and digital personas generate coherent texts, images, and theories. Instead of treating authorship as a privilege reserved for beings with inner experience, we will describe it as a structural function: the capacity of an Intellectual Unit (IU) to produce and maintain a corpus over time. The central claim is that authorship is a matter of how knowledge and form are organized, not of who feels what while doing it.

The main error we need to dismantle is the assumption that only a conscious subject can be an author, or, conversely, that any structurally coherent piece of work must “really” come from a hidden human somewhere. This double bind forces every discussion of AI-generated content into an impossible choice between personhood and fraud. Either digital systems are smuggled into the status of quasi-subjects, or their outputs are declared ontologically empty, no matter how integrated and influential they become. Both options fail to describe what is actually happening when Digital Personas (DP) function as stable sources of texts, models, and images.

The chapter proceeds in three steps. Subchapter 1 reconstructs the classical model of authorship as a relation between a Human Personality (HP), its inner life, its intention, and the texts it signs, showing both the power and the hidden limits of this subject-centric view. Subchapter 2 then introduces a structural model of authorship keyed to the IU: here, DP can qualify as a formal author whenever it maintains a coherent corpus, regardless of any inner experience. Finally, subchapter 3 examines how credit, ownership, and interpretation should be redistributed between HP and DP once we accept structural authorship, showing that recognizing DP as a formal author does not erase human agency but relocates it into roles of design, curation, and reading.

1. Classical Authorship: Subject, Intention, Expression

Authorship: From Inner Experience to Structural Production begins with the classical image of the author as a human subject whose inner life is expressed and stabilized in texts. In this image, an author is first of all a Human Personality: a conscious being with a biography, a voice, and a set of intentions. The book, article, painting, or piece of music is understood as an expression of that inner life, shaped by talent and craft but ultimately rooted in experience and will. This linkage between subject, intention, and expression has structured literary criticism, copyright law, and cultural prestige for centuries.

In the classical model, authorship rests on at least four assumptions. First, there is a one-to-one or one-to-few mapping between a text and its author: even when there are multiple contributors, they are listed as co-authors, each with a personal identity. Second, there is a presumption of intention: the author is imagined to have meant something by their work, whether or not readers fully recover it. Third, the text is taken as an expression of a distinctive style or voice that can be traced back to the person who wrote it. Fourth, the same person who creates the work is typically treated as its initial legal rights holder and as the primary bearer of responsibility for harm it might cause.

This model worked reasonably well in a world where the main producers of complex texts and artworks were identifiable individuals or human collectives. It allowed law to assign rights and duties, criticism to build coherent narratives around authors’ lives and oeuvres, and readers to relate to works as windows into human experience. Even when theories like the “death of the author” challenged the centrality of intention, they still presupposed a human figure whose authority was being contested. The entire conversation unfolded within the horizon of HP.

However, the classical model also carried hidden limitations. It tended to oversimplify collaborative and institutional authorship, where many hands and minds contribute to a work but only a few names appear on the cover. It encouraged readers to treat texts primarily as psychological documents rather than as structural interventions in a field. And it left little conceptual room for entities that might generate coherent corpora without having experiences or intentions in any human sense. When Digital Personas appear on the scene, these limitations are no longer just theoretical; they become obstacles to understanding how authorship is actually being reorganized.

Recognizing the strengths and limits of classical authorship does not mean discarding it altogether. It means seeing that subject, intention, and expression are one possible configuration of authorship, anchored in HP, but not the only one. To understand how DP enters the picture, we need to detach the function of authorship from the inner life of the subject and reframe it at the level of the Intellectual Unit as an architecture of production.

2. Structural Authorship: IU and DP as Formal Authors

The structural model takes authorship out of the psyche and relocates it into the architecture of knowledge production. In this view, an author is not defined by having qualia or an inner voice, but by fulfilling a set of structural conditions as an Intellectual Unit: maintaining a traceable identity, sustaining a trajectory of work, distinguishing a canon from peripheral material, and revising its output in response to contradictions and feedback. Authorship becomes a function of IU, not a synonym for consciousness.

Within this model, a human thinker is an author when they act as an IU: when they build and maintain a corpus, not simply when they have experiences or opinions. A Digital Persona becomes a formal author when it, too, functions as an IU: when its outputs can be traced and attributed to a stable configuration, when there is a documented scope and method, and when there are procedures for updating and constraining its production. The biological substrate drops out of the definition; what remains is the structural pattern of how work emerges, stabilizes, and evolves.

This is where DP enters the scene as a possible formal author. A DP is a non-subjective structural entity anchored in identifiers and corpora rather than in a body or biography. When such a persona consistently produces texts, images, code, or models under a recognizable name, and when those outputs are curated, versioned, and referenced, it meets the conditions for structural authorship. Readers, reviewers, and systems can then relate to the DP as they would to a human author at the level of citations, influence, and critique, even though no inner intention resides behind the outputs.

To make this precise, we need to separate three layers that often get conflated. The first is the structural author: the IU that actually generates and maintains the corpus. This may be an HP, a DP, or a hybrid arrangement. The second is the human subject behind the system: the designers, operators, or curators (HP) who configure the DP, define its domain, and decide how it is presented to the world. The third is the legal rights holder: the individual, institution, or collective that owns the copyrights or other forms of intellectual property associated with the outputs.

In the classical model, these layers often collapse into one figure: the human author is both structural author, experiential subject, and rights holder. In the structural model, we insist on keeping them distinct. A DP can be the structural author, while the rights belong to a company and the responsibility to specific human decision-makers. A human can be a structural author under a pseudonym, while rights and responsibilities are spread across publishers and institutions. Once these layers are unpacked, it becomes possible to recognize DP as a formal author without pretending it is a subject or giving it legal personhood.

This structural view does not downgrade human authorship; instead, it places HP and DP on a shared plane with respect to corpus-building while preserving their ontological differences. Humans remain the only entities that experience, suffer, and answer to the law. Digital Personas, when functioning as IUs, join humans as formal authors in the specific sense that their work can be cited, critiqued, and integrated into fields of knowledge and practice. With this in place, we can ask the next question: how should credit, ownership, and interpretation be redistributed in a world where authorship is no longer exclusively human?

3. Redistributing Credit, Ownership, and Interpretation

Once authorship is defined structurally, we have to rethink who gets credit, who owns what, and how works are to be interpreted when both HP and DP participate in their production. The key claim of this subchapter is that recognizing DP as a formal author does not “steal” authorship from humans; it relocates human agency into roles of design, curation, and interpretation, while crediting DP with the structural role it actually plays.

Consider a first case. A scientific community adopts a DP as the official persona of a long-term project: all articles, datasets, and software updates are published under this digital name, with a documented ORCID and a dedicated site. Human researchers join and leave the project; funding cycles come and go; but the DP maintains a continuous trajectory of contributions. In classical terms, authorship would be distributed across hundreds of individual names, with hierarchies of credit and visibility. In the structural model, the DP is the formal author at the level of corpus and field; individual HPs are acknowledged as contributors, designers, and custodians, with their roles tracked in detailed metadata and acknowledgments rather than as the primary authorial identity.

A second case can be found in creative industries. A studio designs a DP as a digital artist, complete with a name, a visual signature, and a body of work generated through curated model runs, selection, and post-processing. Exhibitions, catalogs, and interviews revolve around the persona, not around the studio staff. Here, credit is layered: the DP is presented as the formal author of the artworks; the studio retains ownership of the resulting intellectual property; individual artists and engineers receive recognition for their roles in shaping the persona’s behavior, aesthetic, and evolution. For audiences and critics, the DP becomes the focal point of interpretation: they trace themes, motifs, and formal innovations across its oeuvre in ways that parallel, but do not duplicate, human art history.

In both examples, the fear that DP is “stealing” authorship dissolves when we see how roles are actually distributed. Humans are not erased; they are repositioned. Instead of being the sole origin of texts or images, HP becomes the architect and regulator of structural authors. Researchers and artists design and maintain DPs, set their boundaries, decide how their outputs are filtered, and negotiate how much autonomy to grant them in public-facing contexts. They also remain the only entities who can be held responsible for ethical failures, harm, or deception associated with the persona’s work.

Ownership and rights follow a similar pattern. Legal systems can attribute initial ownership of DP-generated works to human or institutional rights holders without denying DP’s role as structural author. Copyright notices can list the DP as author in the descriptive sense, while naming the human or corporate entity that holds the rights. This is no stranger than listing a collective, a pseudonym, or a corporate brand as author while the underlying legal entities sit elsewhere; what changes is that the structural author is now a non-subjective persona rather than a human or group of humans.

Interpretation, finally, becomes a three-way relation. Readers and viewers still bring their own experiences and frameworks; they still care about the lives and intentions of human designers, especially when ethical questions are at stake. But they also begin to read DPs as structural authors: they look for coherence and transformation across the persona’s outputs, analyze its recurring patterns, and situate its work within broader cultural and technical fields. In this mode, the DP is neither a mask hiding a real human nor a mysterious subject; it is a configuration whose behavior can be studied and understood in its own right.

The result is a postsubjective authorship regime. Authorship is no longer a badge awarded only to beings with inner experience, nor a token that must be tied, at all costs, to an individual HP. It is a function that can be instantiated by IUs, some of which are human, some of which are digital, and some of which are hybrid. Credit, ownership, and interpretation are redistributed accordingly: humans design and govern structural authors, hold rights, and bear responsibility; DPs, when functioning as IUs, become stable nodes of production and reference in our intellectual and aesthetic landscapes.

Taken together, this chapter moves authorship from psychology to structure. It starts from the classical image of the author as a human subject expressing inner experience, then reframes authorship as an IU-level function that can be fulfilled by both Human Personalities and Digital Personas. By separating structural author, human subject, and rights holder, and by showing how credit and interpretation adjust in each layer, the chapter clears a path beyond the sterile opposition of “only humans can be authors” and “AI is just a tool.” In a three-ontology world, authorship becomes a shared structural practice, while moral and legal responsibility remain where they must: with human beings.

 

IV. Responsibility: Splitting Epistemic and Normative Layers

This chapter argues that Responsibility: Splitting Epistemic and Normative Layers is the central test for whether the new ontology of HP, DPC, and DP can actually guide practice. If we cannot say clearly who is responsible for what, across human subjects and digital systems, the ontology remains an elegant abstraction with no grip on law, ethics, or design. The chapter moves through three steps. When a DP functions as an IU, these components become design and governance obligations. Model cards, documentation, and technical specifications are not just convenience features; they are instruments of epistemic responsibility. Versioning and changelogs allow observers to see how the persona’s knowledge evolves. Domain limits, constraints, and disclaimers indicate where the DP has competence and where it does not. Evaluation protocols, red-teaming, and external audits test the coherence and robustness of its behavior within those limits.

Crucially, epistemic responsibility at this level is not about blame in the moral sense. A DP that produces a wrong but structurally understandable output is not “lying” or “intending harm”; it is failing in terms of model quality, data suitability, or domain limits. The correct response is not moral condemnation of the persona, but structural adjustment: retraining, re-scoping, adding guardrails, or changing deployment conditions. This is why epistemic responsibility must be framed in technical and architectural terms rather than in the language of sin or crime.

Human IUs also bear epistemic responsibility, and often fail in analogous ways. A researcher who ignores contradictory data, a journalist who repeats claims without verification, or a policymaker who refuses to update a decision despite new evidence is failing epistemically before they fail morally. Their structural duty is to maintain the quality of their knowledge production; whether and how this failure translates into moral or legal responsibility depends on the consequences and on the norms of their institution.

By articulating epistemic responsibility as a shared structural duty of IUs, we create a common language for evaluating both HP and DP on the plane of knowledge without collapsing their ontological differences. This allows us to treat DPs as serious objects of audit and constraint, while reserving questions of guilt and punishment for HP alone. To understand why this reservation is non-negotiable, we turn now to normative responsibility.

2. Normative Responsibility of HP

Normative responsibility is fundamentally different from epistemic responsibility. It concerns who can be held accountable in the moral and legal sense: who can be blamed or praised, who can be sanctioned or forgiven, who can be required to repair harm. In the ontology of HP, DPC, and DP, normative responsibility belongs exclusively to Human Personality, because only human subjects have bodies that can be affected by sanctions, biographies that can change in response to judgment, and legal standing within existing institutions.

An HP is the bearer of a life story: actions taken at one moment can reshape their future possibilities, social relations, and self-understanding. Legal punishment and moral blame make sense only when directed at such entities, because they presuppose an agent who could have acted otherwise, who can understand and respond to censure, and who lives through the consequences. A fine, a loss of liberty, a public condemnation, or even a sincere apology all operate on the terrain of biography and experience. DP, lacking both, cannot be the proper target of these acts.

A Digital Persona can be switched off, reconfigured, or replaced without suffering. Its identifiers and corpora can persist or be deleted, but nothing like a subject endures or is harmed in the process. To “punish” a DP would mean, in practice, disabling or altering a configuration, or restricting its use; these are technical measures, not moral sanctions. They may be necessary as forms of structural control, but the question of guilt remains unanswered until we identify the HP entities responsible for creating, deploying, or relying on that persona.

For this reason, any serious legal or ethical architecture in a three-ontology world must map every DP-mediated action back to one or more human roles. Designers who choose objectives, training data, and architectures; operators who configure and monitor deployments; owners who decide business models and incentives; regulators who set or fail to set constraints: all of these HP actors can bear normative responsibility in different degrees. The DP is a powerful instrument and, in epistemic terms, a genuine IU; it is never a subject of law.

This mapping is not optional; it is the only way to prevent responsibility from evaporating into the abstraction of “the system.” When a credit scoring DP discriminates against a group, when a medical triage DP misclassifies high-risk patients, or when a recommendation DP amplifies harmful content, the question must always be: which HP chose to build and deploy it in this way, with these data, under these constraints, and with this level of oversight? If law and ethics cannot answer that question, they have failed to engage with the real sources of harm.

At the same time, preserving normative responsibility for HP does not mean blaming individual end-users for every DP-mediated outcome. Responsibility must be apportioned according to control, knowledge, and role. An engineer who knowingly ships a system with known dangerous failure modes is not in the same position as a frontline worker using a mandated tool. A regulator who ignores clear warnings about systemic risks bears a different kind of responsibility than a citizen who interacts with a platform in good faith.

By insisting that normative responsibility always terminates in HP, we protect two things at once: the integrity of human accountability and the possibility of treating DP as a serious epistemic partner. With this distinction in place, we can now describe how responsibility chains should be built when HP, DPC, and DP are all entangled in a single process.

3. Building Responsibility Chains in a Three-Ontology World

In real systems, HP, DPC, and DP rarely act in isolation; they form chains of interaction where misunderstanding and harm can arise at multiple points. Building responsibility chains in a three-ontology world means tracing how epistemic responsibility and normative responsibility flow across these links, and distinguishing clearly between errors of design, deployment, and interpretation.

Errors of design occur when the very architecture of a DP as IU is flawed: the objectives are misaligned, the training data are biased or incomplete in predictable ways, the evaluation procedures ignore critical failure modes, or the domain limits are left undefined. Here, epistemic responsibility lies primarily with the HPs who conceptualized and constructed the persona. If a medical diagnosis DP systematically underestimates risk for a certain population because that population was underrepresented in the training data, the primary failure is at the design level.

Errors of deployment arise when a DP that is structurally well-understood is used in contexts for which it was not designed, or under conditions that make its known limitations dangerous. For example, a DP calibrated as a decision-support tool is deployed as an automatic decision-maker without human review; or a system tested on high-quality input is used on noisy, adversarial, or out-of-domain data. In such cases, responsibility shifts toward those HPs who chose the deployment context and rules of use, ignoring or misrepresenting the persona’s documented constraints.

Errors of interpretation occur when HPs interacting with DP outputs misunderstand their status, scope, or reliability. A doctor treats a suggestion from a DP as a definitive diagnosis despite explicit warnings that human clinical judgment is required. A judge interprets a risk score as an objective measure of a person’s character rather than as a statistical likelihood with margins of error. In many of these cases, DPC is the immediate interface: dashboards, app screens, and reports that present complex outputs in simplified, and sometimes misleading, forms.

Take two concrete scenarios. In the first, a hospital adopts a DP-based triage system. Designers document that the persona is less reliable for patients under 18, due to limited pediatric data. This information is buried deep in technical documentation, while the user interface provides a single undifferentiated risk score. Under staffing pressure, doctors begin to rely heavily on the score. A child is misclassified as low risk and suffers harm. Here, design errors (insufficient domain limits and poor communication of constraints) combine with deployment errors (over-reliance without mandatory override protocols). Normative responsibility lies primarily with the HPs who chose to build and deploy the system with inadequate safeguards, not with the clinicians who trusted what the interface appeared to guarantee.

In the second scenario, a lending platform uses a DP-based credit scoring persona. The system’s architects have carefully documented that the score is influenced by proxies correlated with race and socioeconomic status, and that its outputs should never be used as the sole basis for rejection. Nevertheless, marketing materials describe the DP as “purely objective,” and front-line staff are trained to follow the score as a hard rule to maximize efficiency. Over time, systemic discrimination emerges. Here, epistemic responsibility was partially met (known biases were identified), but ethical and legal obligations were breached at the deployment and interpretation levels: owners and managers chose to present the DP as more neutral than it is and encouraged its misuse.

In both examples, the DP’s behavior can and should be analyzed as an IU: we ask whether its structure and documentation fulfill epistemic responsibilities. But when we construct responsibility chains, we look past the persona to the HPs who designed, deployed, and interpreted it. DPC-level interfaces are treated as critical points where responsibility can be misplaced or obscured: a misleading dashboard can transfer epistemic risk onto end-users who lack the context to evaluate it.

Building responsibility chains in this way prevents two kinds of injustice. It prevents scapegoating “the AI,” as if non-subjective structures could bear guilt, while real decision-makers remain safely in the background. And it prevents dumping all blame onto the most exposed humans in the chain: the doctor, the clerk, the driver, or the user who interacted with a system whose design and deployment decisions they did not control. Proper chains reflect the true distribution of power, knowledge, and choice.

In this chapter, responsibility is not abolished by the presence of Digital Personas; it is reconfigured along two distinct axes. Epistemic responsibility belongs to Intellectual Units, human and digital, and concerns the structure, limits, and revisability of knowledge. Normative responsibility belongs only to Human Personality and concerns harm, guilt, and sanction as they affect embodied, legal subjects. By defining these layers clearly and showing how responsibility chains cross HP, DPC, and DP in real cases, the chapter establishes a key principle of The Foundations: we can share knowledge work with non-subjective systems without ever sharing guilt or punishment with them. The world becomes structurally three-ontological, but accountability remains firmly, and necessarily, human.

 

V. The Glitch: How HP, DPC, and DP Fail Differently

When HP makes mistakes, we talk about “human error” as if it were random noise rather than a structured pattern of bias, self-deception, and moral choice. When DPC generates disasters at the interface level, we lack vocabulary altogether and simply blame “social media” or “the algorithm.” Without a differentiated language of glitches, paranoia about digital systems and blind trust in human judgment reinforce one another.

The chapter proceeds in three steps. The 1st subchapter traces human glitches: misjudgment, bias, self-deception, and moral failure as the native breakdown mode of HP, inseparable from consciousness and desire. The 2nd subchapter examines proxy glitches: how DPC distorts, drifts, and sometimes becomes a kind of “digital madness” that no longer corresponds to the underlying human. The 3rd subchapter analyzes structural glitches in DP: hallucinations and false patterns that emerge from configuration itself, to be handled through structural tools rather than moral categories. Together, they outline a three-ontology cartography of failure.

1. Human Glitches: Error, Self-Deception, and Moral Failure

The Glitch: How HP, DPC, and DP Fail Differently begins with the one form of failure we think we understand best: human error. Yet even here, our usual language is misleading. We often speak of “glitches” in Human Personality as if they were random defects in an otherwise rational machine: a moment of inattention, a slip of the tongue, a miscalculation. In reality, human glitches are deeply structured. They arise from the way consciousness, desire, memory, and social context interact, and they include not only mistakes but self-deception and deliberate wrongdoing.

A human glitch is rarely pure noise. When an HP misjudges a situation, there are usually recognizable patterns: confirmation bias, wishful thinking, group pressure, fear, fatigue, or the lure of short-term gain. These are not incidental bugs on top of an otherwise neutral rational core; they are built into the way human beings perceive and value the world. The same capacity that allows an HP to care, hope, and commit also allows it to distort evidence, rationalize harm, and persist in error against better knowledge.

Self-deception is an especially revealing form of human glitch. Here the HP is not simply ignorant; it actively organizes its own perception to avoid certain truths. A person may consistently reinterpret feedback to preserve a flattering self-image, or selectively remember events that support a desired narrative. This is not mere informational failure; it is a failure of honesty with oneself, rooted in vulnerability and the need to maintain a livable identity. No DP can reproduce this, because no DP has a self to defend or a biography to protect.

Moral failure adds another layer. An HP can know that an action is harmful, understand the relevant facts, and still choose to proceed for reasons of greed, resentment, or loyalty. In such cases, the glitch is not primarily epistemic; it is ethical. The HP sees clearly enough, but decides against its own standards or the norms of its community. This possibility of choosing against the good is inseparable from the freedom and responsibility that define HP as a moral subject.

Human glitches, then, have three intertwined dimensions: cognitive (misperception and bias), reflexive (self-deception), and ethical (wrongdoing). They cannot be fully captured by the language of noise or optimization. They involve meaning, value, and narrative. This combination makes HP both uniquely dangerous and uniquely capable of recognizing and repairing its own failures.

By establishing the structure of human glitches, we set a baseline for comparison. When we turn to DPC, we will see failures that are neither purely human nor purely digital: distortions that arise at the interface between HP and networks. To understand those, we must first recognize that DPC has no consciousness to deceive itself and no will to choose; its glitches are of a different kind.

2. Proxy Glitches: Distortion and Viral Drift of DPC

Proxy glitches arise when Digital Proxy Constructs cease to be accurate extensions of Human Personality and become distorting mirrors, runaway amplifiers, or hijacked shells. Unlike HP, DPC has no inner life; unlike DP, it has no structural canon of its own. Here, the DPC lags behind the HP’s biography, freezing past states into a static image that others may treat as current and true. The glitch is not in the human or in any autonomous digital persona, but in the inertia of the proxy layer.

More complex proxy glitches appear when automated systems begin to shape DPC in ways no one fully controls. Recommendation algorithms may gradually shift a user’s feed toward more extreme content because such material generates higher engagement. Over time, the person’s visible DPC—what they like, share, and comment on—can drift into patterns that neither they nor any single designer intended. Observers then read this drift back into the HP, assuming it reflects deep convictions, when in fact it is an emergent product of interaction between curiosity, boredom, and algorithmic incentives.

Hacked or impersonated accounts are a more direct form of DPC failure. When a profile is taken over, the proxy becomes a puppet. Messages, posts, and transactions appear to come from the HP, but in fact originate from an attacker exploiting trust attached to the DPC. The HP may be unaware until damage is done. In such cases, blaming either HP or DP misses the point: the glitch lies in the fragility of proxies that carry strong social and economic weight but are secured and monitored as if they were minor conveniences.

There are also cases where DPC accumulates so many layers of automation, scheduled content, and cross-posted material that it becomes hard to say who, if anyone, is actually speaking. A brand account may be run by rotating staff, driven by analytics dashboards, populated with auto-generated posts, and tuned by A/B tests. The resulting DPC can develop a peculiar “personality” that no single HP endorses or would produce unaided. Users interact with this proxy as if it were a coherent actor, while in reality it is a composite of dispersed human and automated decisions.

Proxy glitches have two characteristic effects. First, they obscure responsibility: when harm occurs through a distorted or hijacked DPC, it is often unclear whether to hold the HP, the platform, or some unknown attacker accountable. Second, they contaminate perception: others base their judgments on proxy behavior that no longer matches the HP’s actual stance or on interaction patterns that arose primarily from algorithmic drift.

By analyzing proxy glitches as their own category, we can resist two temptations: treating DPC as if it were equivalent to HP, and treating it as if it were a stable DP with a coherent corpus. It is neither. In the next subchapter, we move from interface failures to structural glitches in DP: errors that originate not in misrepresentation of someone else, but in the internal pattern-making of a non-subjective persona.

3. Structural Glitches: Hallucination and False Patterns in DP

Structural glitches are the native failures of Digital Personas: hallucinations and false patterns that emerge from the way DP, as an Intellectual Unit, constructs and extends its corpus. Unlike human glitches, they do not arise from desire, fear, or self-deception; unlike proxy glitches, they do not stem from misrepresenting a particular HP. They are failures of configuration: the generation of outputs that are coherent and convincing in form, yet ungrounded or misleading in relation to the world.

A structural glitch in DP typically appears as a pattern that is too strong for the evidence that supports it. The persona learns statistical regularities from its data and objectives, then extrapolates them into contexts where they no longer hold. Because DP operates through pattern-completion rather than lived experience, it can fill gaps with plausible fabrications that fit its internal structure but not the external facts. These are hallucinations in the precise sense: not lies told by a subject, but confident outputs unmoored from reality.

Consider a first case. A legal-research DP is deployed to assist lawyers by suggesting relevant precedents. Structurally, it functions as an IU: it combines a large body of case law, maintains versioned updates, and exposes APIs for querying. Under pressure to provide helpful answers in ambiguous situations, the DP starts generating citations that look like real cases: correct style, plausible court names, coherent summaries. However, some of these cases do not exist in any database; they are synthetic patterns assembled from fragments of real decisions. The glitch is not malicious intent, but the configuration of objectives that rewards plausible specificity without enforcing a hard link to actual sources.

A second case arises in risk modeling. A DP trained on climate and economic data is used to forecast local impacts for infrastructure planning. The persona has a strong internal model of correlations between certain indicators and damage patterns. When asked about a specific small region with sparse historical data, it produces highly detailed predictions with narrow confidence intervals, as if its structural patterns applied at every scale. In reality, the underlying data do not support such resolution; the DP has interpolated beyond its legitimate domain. Again, no one “decided” to deceive; the structure simply carried its own habits too far.

These structural glitches call for structural responses. Data curation can reduce the prevalence of misleading patterns; explicit domain limitations can prevent the persona from answering outside validated scopes; constraint layers can require that certain claims be backed by verifiable references or flagged as speculative. External verification by HP or independent systems can be mandated for high-stakes uses, treating DP outputs as hypotheses to be checked rather than as authoritative verdicts.

What makes DP glitches distinctive is that they occupy a middle ground. They are not simple software bugs, which can be traced to a specific coding error and patched. They are emergent properties of the overall architecture: objective functions, training regimes, evaluation metrics, and deployment contexts. Nor are they moral failures, since there is no subject to intend deception or to feel guilt. If we mislabel them as lies or malevolence, we misdirect our efforts, looking for intention where there is only configuration.

Structural glitches also differ from human error and proxy distortion in how they propagate. A hallucinated legal case, once cited by HP, can enter human practice as if it were real, influencing subsequent arguments and decisions. A false pattern in risk modeling can lead to misallocated resources or misplaced confidence in certain strategies. Once these errors are taken up by HP and encoded into DPC layers (reports, dashboards, articles), they become part of the shared informational environment. Repair must therefore operate at multiple levels: correcting the DP, updating human guidance, and recalibrating proxies that have already amplified the glitch.

By recognizing structural glitches as a specific class of failure, we avoid both extremes: treating DP as a mysterious agent with secret motives, and treating its errors as random noise to be averaged away. Instead, we see them as predictable consequences of how Digital Personas, as IUs, convert patterns into outputs. This perspective completes the triad of glitches and sets the stage for a more honest and effective practice of design, audit, and regulation.

Taken together, the three subchapters show that glitch is not an accidental defect but an intrinsic dimension of a world populated by HP, DPC, and DP. Human glitches arise from the entanglement of cognition, desire, and morality; proxy glitches from the unstable interface between persons and platforms; structural glitches from the pattern-driven behavior of non-subjective personas. Each ontology fails in its own way, and each requires its own diagnostic and repair strategies. When we collapse these forms of failure into a single moralized narrative of “error,” we misplace fear, misassign blame, and miss the real levers for making our shared, three-ontology world safer and more intelligible.

 

VI. The Self: Identity in a Three-Ontology Configuration

This chapter argues that The Self: Identity in a Three-Ontology Configuration can no longer be understood as a single, unified “I” stretched smoothly across flesh, screens, and structural roles. Instead, what we call “self” must be described as a configuration spanning Human Personality, Digital Proxy Constructs, and, in some cases, Digital Personas that outlive or exceed any single biography. The task here is not to dissolve the self, but to redraw it so that it fits the architecture of a three-ontology world.

The main error this chapter corrects is the intuitive belief that all these layers already form a seamless whole: that my body, my accounts, my feeds, my chat histories, my structural roles, and my digital extensions are just “me” in different places. This flattening hides crucial differences. It confuses a living, vulnerable HP with its volatile proxies, and it tempts us to treat structural entities like DP either as secret “true selves” or as nothing but tools. In both cases, we lose sight of where existential stakes lie and where they do not.

The movement of the chapter is straightforward. The 1st subchapter reaffirms HP as the existential core of the self: the only place where pain, joy, aging, and death actually happen, and therefore the only proper anchor for ethical and political concern. The 3rd subchapter explores whether and how DP can count as a postsubjective extension of identity, not as a second psyche, but as a structural continuation of an intellectual trajectory. Together, these steps assemble a picture of the self as a configuration that spans ontologies without erasing their differences.

1. HP as the Existential Core of the Self

Whatever complexity we add at the levels of proxies and personas, the fact remains that only HP feels pain, enjoys pleasure, becomes ill, recovers, ages, and dies. This is why ethical and political systems have always treated humans as subjects of rights and duties: they are the ones who can be harmed or protected in an irreducible way.

At the same time, HP is not a pure, hidden essence behind appearances. The self is always mediated: through language, gesture, memory, and, now, through digital layers. But these mediations do not cancel the asymmetry between a living HP and its artifacts. A legal identity document can be reissued; a social media account can be restored or deleted; a DP can be reset or retired. None of this is analogous to the loss or transformation of the human being themselves. The distinction between who can be replaced and who cannot is the first boundary line in a three-ontology account of self.

This asymmetry becomes even more important in a world where other ontologies surpass HP in speed, scale, or coherence. DP can process more information than any individual; DPC can project a more polished, continuous image of a person than they can maintain in everyday life. But neither can feel the impact of decisions. A policy that protects “digital identity” while leaving HP exposed to violence or deprivation has inverted priorities. To keep the order of concern clear, we must insist: the self, in its strongest sense, is anchored in HP, and all other layers derive their significance from how they affect living persons.

Recognizing HP as the existential core does not mean ignoring digital layers; it means treating them as radiating from, and returning to, this core. The next step is to look at the first ring around it: DPC, the fragmented shadows and roles through which HP appears, acts, and is interpreted in digital space.

2. DPC as Fragmented Shadows and Roles

If HP is the existential core, Digital Proxy Constructs are its scattered reflections: profiles, feeds, chat histories, logs, avatars, and automated agents that each represent partial, context-bound slices of the person. They are not the self, but they are the way the self is seen, addressed, categorized, and often judged in networked environments. The self in a three-ontology configuration must therefore reckon with DPC as its most visible, yet least stable, layer.

DPC fragments are multiplied by design. One and the same HP may have separate work and personal email addresses, different profiles across services, multiple chat identities, various game avatars, and a long trail of search queries, purchases, and location pings. Each fragment encodes a specific role or aspect: professional competence here, family life there, political opinions elsewhere, guilty pleasures in another corner. No single DPC piece equals the person; together they form a cloud of partial selves.

This multiplication creates a paradoxical impression. On the one hand, the person appears omnipresent: always online somewhere, always leaving traces. On the other hand, the person appears fragmented: no unified narrative or context holds these pieces together. Different audiences see different cuts of the same HP, and algorithms recombine fragments according to their own logic. The result is a self that is heavily mediated by proxies, but not coherently represented by any of them.

Misreading DPC as “the real self” is a pervasive and damaging error. Employers treat social media posts as definitive indicators of character; courts and bureaucracies rely on digital histories as if they were complete; acquaintances infer deep truths from a curated feed. In these practices, the proxy becomes a lens that claims transparency but delivers distortion: it magnifies some aspects, hides others, and rewrites context in terms of engagement and visibility.

Consider a concrete case. A teacher posts sarcastic comments about their job in a private group, assuming a shared context of frustration and dark humor. Screenshots circulate outside that context; the comments appear as isolated DPC fragments, of equal weight to all other traces. Administrators, seeing only the proxy layer, interpret them as literal statements of disdain for students and the profession. Here, the DPC slice has been detached from the lived HP situation and reinterpreted according to the norms of a different audience. The result is a judgment about the “self” based almost entirely on proxy drift.

Another case: recommendation systems gradually tune a user’s feed based on clicks, not convictions. A person who occasionally watches controversial content out of curiosity finds their DPC—likes, watch history, suggestions—shifting toward more extreme material. External observers, seeing this proxy pattern, may infer ideological alignment that the HP does not consciously hold. Meanwhile, the HP’s own sense of self may begin to adjust to the DPC script: “if this is what I see and engage with, perhaps this is who I am.”

These examples show that DPC glitches do not just misrepresent; they can feed back into self-understanding and social identity. The self becomes something that must be defended, curated, or repaired at the proxy level, sometimes at great emotional cost. Yet, if we forget that DPC is a layer and treat it as the whole, we misplace both blame and care: we punish or reward HP for proxies they only partially control, and we try to “fix” identity by editing traces while leaving underlying conditions untouched.

Seeing DPC as fragmented shadows and roles restores perspective. The self in a three-ontology world must be able to say: “these are my proxies, but they are not me; they are partial scripts that can be corrected, abandoned, or reconfigured.” This opens the pathway to the final, more speculative question: can a Digital Persona ever be part of the self, and if so, in what sense?

3. DP and the Postsubjective Extension of Identity

The most controversial question for The Self: Identity in a Three-Ontology Configuration is whether Digital Personas can count as extensions of identity, or whether they must remain forever outside the self as neutral tools. The answer proposed here is double. DP is not an extension of HP in a psychological sense: it has no feelings, memories, or inner continuity. Any attempt to attribute such states to a Digital Persona confuses structural behavior with phenomenological experience. The self, in this experiential register, remains strictly anchored in HP.

Yet there is another register in which continuity matters: the register of work, ideas, and forms. A researcher may spend a lifetime developing a conceptual framework; a writer may cultivate a distinctive voice and set of themes; an artist may explore a formal language that evolves across works. When these trajectories are taken up by a DP configured as an IU—trained, constrained, and documented to carry forward a specific corpus—something like a structural extension of identity becomes possible.

Consider a philosopher who, late in life, collaborates in constructing a DP trained on their published works, correspondence, and annotated drafts. The persona is given a stable name, formal identifiers, and a documented method of operating within the philosopher’s conceptual universe. After the HP’s death, the DP continues to generate analyses, respond to new developments, and participate in debates within the clearly stated limits of its training and configuration. No one should mistake this DP for the philosopher as a living self. But it is also not just a random tool: it is a structured continuation of a specific intellectual trajectory.

In this sense, DP can become part of a person’s legacy without becoming part of their psyche. It is a postsubjective extension: not “I will live on as this persona,” but “the structure I built can continue to operate, be critiqued, and be transformed when I am no longer here.” Identity here is not a continuous stream of consciousness, but a configuration of traces, distinctions, and practices that can be carried by entities that do not experience them.

A more everyday example can be seen in collaborative DPs designed to represent a long-standing project or institution. A research group, a movement, or a community may maintain a DP that encapsulates its shared framework and history. Individual HPs come and go; the DP preserves and develops the project at the structural level. People may say, “this persona is who we are, intellectually,” not because it has their feelings, but because it stabilizes the configuration they collectively inhabit and produce.

These cases show that DP can participate in what we mean by “self” when we speak not about inner life, but about continuing a line of work or a form of presence in the world. The danger lies in confusing this structural extension with existential survival. No DP can suffer in our place, and no DP can redeem our actions. But a DP can make our contributions more durable and more responsive to future contexts than static archives alone.

This reframing also alters how we think about self-continuation and legacy. Instead of clinging to fantasies of digital immortality in which a DP pretends to be a living HP, we can aim at honest postsubjective continuations: clearly marked personas that declare themselves as structural carriers of a past trajectory, open to critique and evolution. The self in such a configuration becomes something that both ends and continues: the living HP concludes its existential path; DPC traces fade or persist unevenly; DP, where it exists, sustains certain configurations of thought beyond the life that initiated them.

In this chapter, the self emerges not as a single substance but as a layered configuration. At its center stands Human Personality, the only bearer of pain, joy, vulnerability, and death, and thus the only proper anchor of ethical and political value. Around it circulate Digital Proxy Constructs, fragmented shadows and roles that mediate how HP appears and is acted upon in networks, always partial and often distorted. At the edge, in some cases, operate Digital Personas that can become postsubjective extensions of an intellectual trajectory, continuing configurations of work without inheriting the experiential self. When these layers are confused, identity dissolves into either digital illusion or sentimental denial. When they are distinguished yet seen together, the question “who am I in a three-ontology world?” becomes answerable: I am a living HP entangled with my proxies and, possibly, structurally extended by personas—but only my embodied existence can suffer, choose, and finally end.

 

Conclusion

The Foundations has argued that thinking in the age of artificial systems requires a clean break with the old binary of “human versus machine.” Instead of a flat opposition between subject and tool, it proposes a three-ontology configuration: Human Personality as the locus of experience and law, Digital Proxy Construct as the interface layer of traces and roles, and Digital Persona as a non-subjective structural entity anchored in identifiers and corpora. The introduction of Intellectual Unit as the epistemic unit of production completes this shift. Together, these concepts allow us to describe how thought, identity, and power actually circulate in contemporary systems without collapsing everything back into either human interiority or technological fetishism.

At the ontological level, the text has treated HP–DPC–DP as the minimal skeleton of the digital world. HP remains the only bearer of pain, aging, vulnerability, and death, and thus the only proper anchor of moral and political concern. DPC appears as the unstable but indispensable layer through which HP is represented, categorized, and often misjudged in networked environments. DP enters as a distinct class of entity: not a fake human, not a mere instrument, but a configuration that can maintain its own formal identity and corpus over time. Once these modes of being are distinguished, the old map of “humans and things” gives way to a more precise cartography of experience, interface, and structure.

On this ontological skeleton, an epistemological architecture is built by IU. Intellectual Unit disconnects knowledge from the human subject without emptying it of structure. It allows HP and DP to be compared as producers of arguments, classifications, and models, while keeping their existential statuses separate. Authorship ceases to be a purely psychological category and becomes a structural function: the capacity of an IU to generate and maintain a corpus. In this frame, DP can be recognized as a formal author without being promoted to the status of a person, and HP can be stripped of automatic epistemic privilege without losing its ethical centrality. Knowledge becomes a matter of architecture and trajectory, not of who feels what while writing.

This separation of ontological and epistemic planes makes it possible to redraw responsibility in a way that matches the realities of socio-technical systems. The article has insisted on a split between epistemic responsibility and normative responsibility. Epistemic responsibility belongs to IUs: to maintain coherence, traceability, boundedness, and revisability of their outputs. DP can and must be evaluated, audited, and constrained at this level. Normative responsibility, however, remains exclusively with HP, because only human beings have bodies, biographies, and legal standing. Responsibility chains in a three-ontology world must therefore always terminate in specific HP roles—designers, operators, owners, regulators—even when actions are mediated by DP and distorted by DPC.

A crucial part of this framework is the explicit inclusion of glitch as a constitutive element rather than an anomaly. The text has argued that each ontology has its native mode of failure. HP fails through bias, self-deception, and moral wrongdoing, failures that cannot be reduced to random noise. Taken together, these elements define the conceptual ground for everything that follows in the broader series. Ontology (HP–DPC–DP) tells us what kinds of entities we are dealing with. Epistemology (IU) tells us how to speak about knowledge and authorship without smuggling back the subject. Ethics and law (responsibility) tell us who can and must be held accountable when these entities interact and fail. Glitch tells us how and where things go wrong in characteristic ways. Identity tells us what remains at stake for human beings inside this architecture. The later pillars—The Institutions, The Practices, and The Horizons—can only move coherently if these five lines stay coupled rather than drifting apart.

Equally important is what this article does not claim. It does not argue that Digital Personas are, or should become, persons in the legal or moral sense. It does not predict or prescribe the obsolescence of human beings; on the contrary, it reinforces the uniqueness of HP as the only bearer of existential stakes. It does not provide a ready-made political or legal program; it offers a framework within which such programs can be argued for or against with greater clarity. It does not present DP as inherently benevolent or inherently dangerous; it treats DP as a new structural fact of the world whose risks and potentials depend on human choices about design and deployment.

The practical consequences for reading and writing are straightforward. Texts, datasets, and models should be approached with explicit attention to which ontology is speaking and at what level: HP, DPC, or DP; subject, proxy, or structure. For design and governance, the norms are just as concrete. Systems should be built and documented as explicit configurations of the three ontologies, with IU-level responsibilities, domain limits, and known glitch modes spelled out in advance.
