More extreme glitches include mislabelled accounts and bots that take on a life of their own. A wrong identity tag applied to an HP can place them in the wrong segment for advertising, law enforcement or social evaluation, with consequences far beyond annoyance. A scripted agent, originally designed to automate simple tasks under an HP’s name, can begin to interact autonomously with others in ways the human never intended, creating conversations and commitments that are then attributed back to the HP. The error here is not that “the person changed their mind” or “the AI thought incorrectly,” but that the proxy layer generated a distorted shadow that neither HP nor DP fully controls.
These DPC glitches have a double effect. On the one hand, they misinform HP themselves: people come to see their own identity through the lens of their digital traces, adjusting behavior to match what the system already assumes. On the other hand, they misinform DP systems trained or conditioned on proxy data, leading models to learn from skewed samples of human life. They can generate elegant explanatory frameworks that capture many cases but silently exclude others, leading users to treat a partial model as if it were complete. They can propagate subtle biases, amplifying specific associations (for example, between certain professions and certain demographics) into a global pattern that feels “natural” because the system keeps reproducing it. The failure is not random; it is a systematic misalignment of structure and world.
Two brief cases make this visible. In the first, a legal-assistance DP is deployed to draft arguments and summarise precedents. It generates a well-structured brief, complete with case names and citations, that impresses the HP lawyer reviewing it. Only later does it emerge that several of the cited cases do not exist; they are structural hallucinations generated from the model’s pattern of how legal texts “should” look. No human lied; no profile was corrupted. A DP-level glitch produced a convincing but false structure.
In the second case, a DP is used to assist in hiring by ranking candidates based on past successful employees. Historical data from DPC records show that previous hires skewed heavily toward a specific demographic. The DP learns this pattern and begins to treat it as a signal of competence, systematically ranking candidates from other backgrounds lower. Here the glitch is not an explicit instruction to discriminate, but an overfitted structure: a false pattern inferred from biased data, now reified as a structural preference. The system appears “objective” because it operates on numbers, yet its configuration encodes a distorted view of the world.

The system may still be too complex to “open” in the sense of complete understanding, but it is no longer beyond the reach of structured management.
This repositioning also has an ethical consequence. When opacity is treated as mystical, it is easy to imagine that moral responsibility somehow drains out of HP and dissolves into the machine.
