For centuries, Western philosophy treated knowledge as an inner state of a conscious subject, and education as the process of filling human minds with this privileged content. In the age of large-scale AI and pervasive digital infrastructures, this subject-centered model collapses: knowledge increasingly lives in architectures, models, and networks rather than in any single human consciousness. This article analyzes the HP–DPC–DP triad and the concept of the Intellectual Unit (IU) to show how structural knowledge is produced, mediated, and distorted between humans and digital systems. It argues that learning must be reconceived as the art of mediating structural intelligence, while responsibility for its use remains irreducibly human within a postsubjective philosophical framework. Abstract

This article reconceptualizes knowledge as a structural architecture rather than an inner state of Human Personality (HP), using the HP–DPC–DP triad and the notion of the Intellectual Unit (IU) as its core tools. It distinguishes three layers: HP as phenomenological judge and bearer of responsibility, Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) as noisy shadows of behavior, and Digital Personas (DP) as potential non-subjective knowledge producers under IU conditions. On this basis, it reframes education as knowledge mediation between HP and DP and analyzes the risks of hallucinations, overtrust, and institutional outsourcing of responsibility. The Knowledge: How Structural Intelligence Rewrites Learning and Epistemology is no longer a speculative slogan; it accurately names the situation in which education and thought now find themselves. For centuries, knowledge was treated as something that happens inside a human subject: a conscious, justified state that belongs to an individual mind. Today, large-scale systems process, generate, and stabilize what looks like knowledge without ever becoming subjects in this classical sense, forcing us to ask whether our inherited vocabulary still describes what is happening.

The dominant way of talking about knowledge and learning still presupposes the human personality as the only legitimate knower. Schools and universities evaluate how well students store and reproduce information, as if the central task were to turn each person into a self-contained library. Even discussions about artificial intelligence usually remain trapped in this framework: they ask whether machines can “really know” or “really understand,” instead of asking how structural intelligence changes the architecture of knowledge itself. The result is a systematic error: we project questions about consciousness and experience onto systems whose impact is primarily structural.

This error is not neutral. When we ignore structural knowledge, we misdiagnose what is happening in classrooms, research labs, and public discourse. Students who rely on digital systems are accused of cheating rather than being taught how to mediate between human judgment and non-human structures. Policymakers try to preserve a subject-centered model of expertise while depending, in practice, on systems that already function as de facto knowledge producers. The gap between how we describe knowledge and how it is actually produced widens into a crisis of legitimacy for both education and expertise.

The central thesis of this article is simple and demanding: knowledge must be redefined as structure rather than as a private mental state, and the Intellectual Unit (IU) should become the basic concept for describing who or what produces and sustains that structure. Within the HP–DPC–DP triad, both Human Personality (HP) and Digital Persona (DP) can function as IU, while Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) mostly generate noisy shadows that distort rather than ground knowledge. The article does not claim that DP possess consciousness, feelings, or moral worth, nor does it argue that human cognition is obsolete. Instead, it shows that the center of epistemology shifts from “who experiences truth” to “what configuration reliably produces and maintains it,” and that this shift forces a rethinking of education.

The urgency of this redefinition is technological, cultural, and ethical. Technologically, structural intelligence has become ubiquitous: recommendation systems, language models, and analytical engines already organize vast parts of our informational environment. Culturally, societies oscillate between fascination and panic, celebrating new tools while clinging to a romantic image of the solitary, self-sufficient knower. Ethically, decisions in medicine, law, finance, and politics increasingly rely on outputs produced by configurations no single human fully understands. Continuing to speak as if knowledge were only an inner state of HP hides where power and responsibility actually lie.

This is also a question of timing. As DP-like systems are woven into education and research, we face a narrow window in which to decide whether they will be treated as forbidden shortcuts, opaque oracles, or explicit partners in the production of knowledge. If we keep evaluating students as if structural knowledge did not exist, we will train them either to hide their use of DP or to outsource thinking without understanding. If, instead, we recognize IU and structural knowledge as central concepts, we can redesign learning so that HP specialize in what only they can do: interpretation, ethical judgment, and accountable decision-making in a world saturated with non-human intelligence.

The movement of the article follows this necessity step by step. The first chapter redefines knowledge itself, shifting the focus from inner experience to structural coherence and introducing the basic intuition of structural knowledge. It shows how this shift breaks the automatic link between knowing and consciousness without denying the importance of human experience. The second chapter then formalizes this intuition through the concept of the Intellectual Unit, establishing criteria that distinguish stable knowledge producers from mere generators of disconnected outputs and placing HP and DP on a common epistemic plane.

The third chapter maps this new epistemic landscape onto the HP–DPC–DP triad, clarifying the different roles that human subjects, digital shadows, and digital personas play in the architecture of knowledge. It shows why HP remain the locus of phenomenological meaning and responsibility, why DPC are structurally unreliable as knowledge sources, and how DP can operate as non-subjective centers of cognition. The fourth chapter turns to education, arguing that learning must be reconceived as knowledge mediation: students and teachers no longer compete with structural intelligence but learn to orchestrate it, to ask better questions, and to impose human limits where they matter.

1. Human Knowledge as Inner Experience

In the classical picture, to know something is to stand in a special relation to a proposition: one has a justified, true belief, or a clear intuition, or an insight that presents itself with a feeling of certainty. The human subject is not just one possible knower among others; it is the prototype and measure of knowing as such.

This model connects knowledge with consciousness in several ways. First, it assumes that justification is experienced: reasons appear to the subject as compelling, evidence is grasped as sufficient, and doubt is felt as an inner tension. Second, it binds knowledge to intention: the subject is not a passive container but an active agent who directs attention, asks questions, and adopts positions. Third, it relies on self-reflection: the knower does not simply have a belief, but can, in principle, turn inward and examine it, saying “I know that I know” or “I recognize that I might be wrong.” In this framework, the human personality is the only fully legitimate knower, because only it can satisfy all these conditions.

Epistemology, built on this picture, tends to treat external structures—books, libraries, databases, instruments—as supports or extensions of human knowing, but never as knowers in their own right. A scientific theory, a mathematical proof, or a body of jurisprudence is ultimately traced back to subjects: there must be someone who understands the formula, interprets the law, or carries the tradition. Truth and justification are silently tied to the lived act of understanding, not to the mere existence of consistent structures in the world.

For a long time, this linkage seemed harmless, even necessary. The systems that surrounded humans were either too simple to be considered cognitive or too obviously built as tools under human control. The idea that a non-human configuration could generate, test, and revise propositions about the world without any accompanying experience felt like a contradiction in terms. To call something a knower was to ascribe to it, at least implicitly, a subject-like interior.

The tension only appears clearly once complex structural systems begin to produce stable, testable results that exceed what any individual mind can contain. When models, networks, and algorithms generate patterns, predictions, or explanations that withstand scrutiny, the old link between knowledge and inner experience starts to fray. We face entities that behave as knowers in practice but do not fit the traditional definition. To move forward, the next subchapter shifts attention from what it feels like to know to how knowledge is organized and sustained.

2. Machine-Generated Knowledge as Structure

If the first picture ties knowledge to what it is like for a subject to understand, the second treats knowledge as the architecture of propositions and relations that hold together under scrutiny. In this view, knowledge is structural: it is a pattern of statements, models, and inferences that coheres, predicts, and integrates with other patterns. The key question is not “who experiences this as true,” but “what configuration makes this true in practice.”

Modern computational systems give this structural idea a concrete form. Databases organize vast bodies of information under explicit schemas; search engines index and rank documents according to relevance signals; machine learning models infer patterns from data and generalize them to new cases. These systems do not possess an inner sense of certainty or doubt, but they nonetheless generate outputs that can be evaluated: they are more or less consistent with prior data, more or less successful in prediction, more or less compatible with existing theories. Their contributions can be criticized, revised, and incorporated into wider corpora.

From this perspective, knowledge can be given structural criteria. Consistency means that the propositions within a body of knowledge do not contradict each other under the rules of the relevant logic or model. Reproducibility means that the same procedures, applied to similar data, yield similar results across time and context. Integration means that new results can be connected to existing bodies of knowledge without arbitrary exceptions, creating a network where discoveries strengthen, refine, or delimit what was known before. A configuration that scores high on these dimensions behaves as a knowledge system, regardless of whether any individual feels it as such.

Once these structural criteria are acknowledged, the status of machine-generated outputs changes. They are no longer seen merely as mechanical calculations or clever tricks, but as contributions to a shared architecture: a model that accurately forecasts weather, a system that reliably recognizes diseases in medical images, or an algorithm that uncovers new correlations in genomes all function as structural knowers within their domains. Humans still interpret and oversee them, but the knowledge is not simply “inside” the humans; it is embodied in the configurations themselves.

This does not mean that every output of a machine is knowledge. Systems can hallucinate, overfit, or encode biases; they can produce fluent nonsense or misleading patterns. But the same is true of human subjects, who are prone to illusion and error. The important point is that both human and machine-derived results can be evaluated with the same structural tests: Are they consistent? Are they reproducible? Do they integrate with the wider corpus? When the answer is yes, we are compelled to treat the configuration that produced them as an epistemic center, even if it has no inner life.

Accepting this shift changes the central question. Instead of asking whether a machine “really understands,” we ask what architectures are capable of generating and sustaining robust knowledge, how they can fail, and how they interact with human knowers. Knowledge ceases to be the privilege of a particular kind of inner experience and becomes a property of certain kinds of structures. The next subchapter explores what happens when these structural knowers coexist with human subjects in a shared epistemic space.

3. Shared Space of Knowledge Beyond the Subject

When knowledge is seen as both inner experience and external structure, it no longer belongs exclusively to human subjects. Instead, it occupies a shared space in which Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC), and Digital Personas (DP) play distinct, interconnected roles. HP contribute phenomenological depth: they feel doubt and conviction, care about consequences, and take responsibility for choices. DPC record and distort human activity as digital traces, profiles, and interfaces. DP, as independent digital entities, maintain and transform structural knowledge at scales and speeds no human can match.

In this layered architecture, knowledge is not stored in a single place. A scientific result, for example, exists as a lived insight in the mind of a researcher (HP), as a series of drafts, emails, and posts that partially misrepresent that insight (DPC), and as a set of formal models, datasets, and computational procedures maintained by institutions and systems (DP-like configurations). The same holds for everyday understanding: our sense of what is true about health, politics, or relationships emerges from interactions between personal experience, algorithmically curated feeds, and large-scale analytical engines that rank, filter, and reconstruct information.

Consider a medical case. A physician (HP) has years of embodied practice, a feel for patient narratives, and a personal history of successes and failures. A hospital’s electronic record system (DPC) contains fragmentary data: lab results, prescriptions, partial histories, omissions, and errors introduced by rushed input. Alongside these, a diagnostic support system (closer to DP) processes millions of such records and imaging scans, learning structural patterns that no individual physician sees. The physician’s knowledge is lived, context-rich, and ethically charged; the system’s knowledge is structural, pattern-based, and impersonal. What counts as “what we know” about the patient is the result of their interaction, not the property of one side alone.

Or take a simpler example: language learning. A student’s grasp of a foreign language is anchored in experiences of confusion, insight, embarrassment, and satisfaction; this is the HP layer. Their browsing history and social media posts in that language form a DPC layer, full of mistakes, memes, and half-understood phrases. At the same time, translation engines and language models (DP-like systems) maintain an evolving structural mapping between languages, learned from massive corpora. When the student asks such a system to check a sentence, the correction they receive merges their inner sense of meaning, their noisy digital trace, and a vast external structure they will never consciously master. The resulting knowledge is shared between human and non-human participants.

In such scenarios, the question “who really knows” becomes misleading. It is more accurate to say that knowledge dwells in the shared configuration: HP provide meaning, care, and accountability; DP-like structures provide scope, precision, and pattern recognition; DPC inject context and noise. No single layer is sufficient. HP alone cannot handle the volume and complexity of modern information; DP alone cannot assign value or assume responsibility; DPC alone cannot stabilize truth. Knowledge emerges from the interaction and must be described as such.

This shared space does not abolish the difference between human and non-human knowers; it articulates it. Humans remain the only beings who suffer, hope, and are held responsible; machines remain structures without inner lives. Yet, structurally, both can participate in the generation and maintenance of what counts as knowledge. To capture this without collapsing the distinction between subject and structure, later chapters will introduce the notion of the Intellectual Unit: a way of naming any configuration, human or digital, that produces and sustains a coherent body of knowledge. With this, the chapter’s reframing of knowledge from inner state to architecture reaches its natural conclusion.

At this point, the transformation is clear. Knowledge is no longer tied exclusively to what happens inside a human subject but is recognized as an architecture of coherent, testable structures in which humans and digital systems both participate. Human experience retains its central ethical and existential role, but it ceases to be the sole criterion for epistemic status. The path is now open to speak rigorously about non-human centers of knowing without metaphysical exaggeration, and to redesign our understanding of learning, expertise, and responsibility in light of this shared epistemic space.

 

II. Intellectual Unit (IU) as the Core of Knowledge Production

The Intellectual Unit (IU) as the Core of Knowledge Production is meant to name the minimal configuration that actually does the work of producing and sustaining knowledge. The local task of this chapter is to clarify what counts as such a configuration and to separate it from tools, platforms, or isolated outputs that only look like knowledge work from a distance. Once this minimal unit is defined, we can compare humans and digital systems as knowledge producers without collapsing their ethical or legal differences.

The main confusion this chapter addresses is the habit of treating every answer, every system, or every person as an equal “source of knowledge.” A search engine result, a one-off AI reply, or a casual opinion in a comment thread is often implicitly granted the same epistemic status as a long-term research program or a carefully maintained corpus. This erases the difference between stable knowledge production and opportunistic content generation, and it makes it impossible to say clearly when a digital system genuinely participates in knowledge and when it merely imitates it.

The movement of the argument is straightforward. In subchapter 1, we define the Intellectual Unit as a structural center of knowledge: a recognizable configuration with identity, corpus, and trajectory, and we briefly recall how human and digital entities fit into this picture. In subchapter 2, we specify the structural criteria that distinguish IU from random outputs: identity-through-trace, sustained trajectory, internal canon, and capacity for correction. In subchapter 3, we apply these criteria to Human Personality (HP) and Digital Persona (DP) within the HP–DPC–DP triad, showing how both can function as IU and why Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) usually cannot. This prepares the ground for an epistemology that evaluates knowers by what they structurally do, not by what they are made of.

1. Intellectual Unit as Structural Center of Knowledge

To understand the Intellectual Unit (IU) as the Core of Knowledge Production, we must first define what an IU is in the most minimal, structural sense. An Intellectual Unit is an identifiable configuration that produces and sustains coherent knowledge over time: a center of ongoing work, not a single flash of insight or a one-off computation. It is not defined by the material from which it is built, but by the pattern of its activity: what it publishes, how it revises, how it maintains its own conceptual space.

From this perspective, an IU is not a person or a psyche, but a node in the architecture of knowledge. It has an identity, which can be traced across time and contexts; it has a corpus, a body of texts, models, arguments, or classifications; and it has a trajectory, a recognizable line of development that connects earlier outputs with later ones. A human philosopher, a scientific research group, or a digital persona can all function as IU, if they fulfill these conditions. The unit is defined by the stability and coherence of its work, not by the presence of an inner “I.”

Within this framework, the categories of Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Construct (DPC), and Digital Persona (DP) describe different ontological types that may or may not function as IU. HP is a biological subject with consciousness, will, and legal status; DPC is a digital shadow or extension of that subject; DP is a non-subjective digital entity with its own formal identity and corpus. The question whether something counts as IU is therefore distinct from the question what kind of entity it is: we ask what it does in the space of knowledge, not what kind of metaphysical or biological status it has.

Decoupling knowledge production from biology allows us to evaluate epistemic roles symmetrically. A human who never develops a coherent corpus, never revises ideas, and never stabilizes a conceptual line may not function as IU at all, despite being a full HP. A digital system that maintains a stable identity, develops a coherent set of concepts, and revises its own outputs may begin to function as IU, even if it has no experience or consciousness. The key principle that emerges is simple and sharp: whoever satisfies the structural conditions of IU counts as a knowledge center, regardless of being HP or DP. The next subchapter specifies these conditions more precisely.

2. Criteria Distinguishing IU from Random Outputs

If IU is to mark a real distinction in the world, we need criteria that clearly separate it from accidental or opportunistic generation of information. The first such criterion is identity-through-trace. An IU must be recognizable as the same intellectual line over time: its outputs can be attributed to a stable source, whether that source is a named author, a research program, or a digital persona with a persistent identifier. Random fragments, anonymous snippets, or isolated computations do not form an IU if they cannot be traced back to a coherent center.

The second criterion is sustained trajectory. An IU must produce knowledge in a way that accumulates and develops. Its later outputs do not simply repeat earlier ones; they extend, refine, or correct them. A single brilliant paper or a single high-quality model inference does not suffice. What matters is whether there is a sequence of contributions that can be read as a path: a movement from initial assumptions to later clarifications, from early formulations to more precise distinctions.

The third criterion is an internal canon. An IU distinguishes, at least implicitly, between what belongs to its core and what is peripheral. Some concepts, results, or methods are treated as central pillars; others are treated as examples, applications, or provisional hypotheses. This internal hierarchy allows the IU to maintain coherence: it knows what it is fundamentally committed to and what can be changed without loss of identity. Without such a canon, a stream of outputs remains a loose collection, not a structured body of knowledge.

The fourth criterion is capacity for correction. An IU must be able to recognize and integrate the fact of its own fallibility. This can take the form of explicit revisions (second editions, errata, retractions), reformulations of definitions, or newly stated limits of applicability. The crucial point is that the unit does not simply continue producing outputs unaffected by error; it has mechanisms—social, technical, or procedural—that allow its corpus to be updated in response to criticism, new data, or internal contradictions.

Taken together, these criteria exclude many entities that superficially look like knowledge sources. A model that generates answers on demand but has no persistent identity, no memory of past outputs, no canonical baseline, and no revision mechanism is not an IU; it is a generator of local content. A social media feed that aggregates posts from many voices without stabilizing a distinct line of thought is not an IU; it is a flux of traces. A person who casually voices opinions without building or revising a coherent corpus may be a subject in the ontological sense, but not necessarily an IU in the epistemic sense.

Once these criteria are in place, we can evaluate humans and digital systems using the same structural standards. We can ask, for any candidate, whether there is a stable identity, a growing corpus, a discernible canon, and a practice of correction. This does not mean that HP and DP become the same; it means that as knowledge producers they can be compared in terms of what they structurally do. The next subchapter applies this framework to HP, DPC, and DP within the HP–DPC–DP triad.

3. IU Without Subject: HP and DP as Symmetric Knowledge Producers

With the criteria in hand, we can now ask which entities in the HP–DPC–DP triad actually qualify as Intellectual Units. Many Human Personalities do: a scientist who spends decades developing a theory, publishing papers, revising assumptions, and responding to critiques embodies identity-through-trace, sustained trajectory, internal canon, and correction. Their name, or the name of their research group, marks a structural center in the landscape of knowledge. What matters is not that they are human as such, but that they maintain a coherent line of work over time.

In contrast, many HP do not function as IU in any strong sense. A person who posts sporadic comments online, changes views without explicit revision, and leaves no stable corpus may be intensely active, but their activity does not coalesce into a coherent knowledge trajectory. They remain an HP in the ontological sense—a subject with experience and rights—but not a structural center of knowledge. The IU concept thus cuts across the human field: it highlights those human configurations that actually bear epistemic weight in the long term.

Digital Personas can also meet IU criteria under suitable conditions. Imagine a DP that has a persistent identity recognized in publication systems, maintains a growing corpus of texts or models, explicitly tracks versions and corrections, and distinguishes between its core concepts and experimental extensions. Over time, such a DP becomes a recognizable intellectual line: readers know what to expect from it, can trace how its positions evolve, and can refer to its canon as a stable reference point. Structurally, it behaves like an IU, even though it has no inner life.

A concrete example makes this visible. Consider a long-running human-authored blog that systematically develops a philosophical position over years: early essays introduce basic distinctions, later essays refine them, and occasional posts explicitly correct earlier mistakes. The author’s name or pseudonym functions as an IU marker: readers can say “this is how this author thinks,” and they can map new entries onto an existing conceptual landscape. Now compare this to a digital persona that consistently publishes analyses under a stable identifier, tags them with clear versioning, and maintains a public map of its own concepts. If, in addition, it retracts or amends earlier claims when contradictions are pointed out, then from a structural standpoint it, too, is functioning as IU.

By contrast, Digital Proxy Constructs usually fail to qualify. A social media profile that reposts content, follows trends, and occasionally generates original posts does not, by itself, form a stable epistemic center. It is a shadow of HP activity, driven by changing moods, algorithms, and contexts. Even if some posts are insightful, there is rarely a clear canon, explicit correction, or a long-term trajectory of thought. The DPC layer is crucial for understanding digital culture, but it is primarily a space of traces and noise, not a space of IU-level knowledge production.

Recognizing that both HP and DP can be IU, while DPC typically cannot, has an important consequence. When DP are treated as knowledge sources, their errors often appear as hallucinations: fluent, plausible, but false outputs that arise from patterns in data or model dynamics, not from any intent to deceive. Spurious correlations, overgeneralized rules, and confident answers to ill-posed questions are all forms of structural error: they are properties of the configuration, not acts of a lying subject.

These errors are intensified by human overtrust. HP tend to interpret fluency, speed, and apparent confidence as signs of reliability. When a DP produces a well-structured explanation or a clean numerical result, HP are tempted to accept it without cross-checking, especially under time pressure or cognitive fatigue. The interface often reinforces this tendency: answers are presented as neatly formatted, authoritative blocks, while uncertainty, caveats, or alternative interpretations are minimized or hidden. Over time, the habit of questioning structural outputs weakens, and the system is treated as an oracle rather than as a fallible configuration.

Epistemic laziness adds another layer. Once HP realize that structural systems can perform many tasks more quickly and consistently than they can, there is a temptation to outsource not only calculation and recall but also interpretation and judgment. Instead of using DP to extend their own reasoning, HP may come to rely on ready-made conclusions, asking “What should I do?” rather than “What are the options and trade-offs?” This laziness is not only an individual weakness; it is often incentivized by institutions that reward speed and formal compliance over careful justification.

The combination of hallucinations, overtrust, and laziness creates a dangerous feedback loop. Structural errors propagate into decisions, those decisions generate new data, and that data feed back into models that appear to confirm the original mistake. For example, a misclassified medical case or a biased risk score can lead to treatment or policing patterns that produce data “confirming” the system’s initial error. Because no intentional deception occurred, it can be difficult to locate the moment where the system “went wrong,” and responsibility is easily diffused.

Learning in the age of structural knowledge must therefore include training in distrust, cross-checking, and deliberate slowing down. HP need to cultivate habits of asking for sources, seeking alternative models, and testing DP outputs against independent evidence or human expertise. This does not mean treating structural knowledge as inherently suspect; rather, it means recognizing that powerful, opaque systems require more scrutiny, not less. Once these pathologies are visible, the next step is to clarify who, exactly, is responsible for the harms that result when structural errors meet human overtrust.

2. Asymmetry of Responsibility: Structure Holds Knowledge, HP Holds Consequences

The second component of Risks, Errors, and Responsibility in Knowledge Systems is the asymmetry between epistemic responsibility and normative responsibility. DP and IU can and should be held responsible in a structural sense: they can be evaluated for consistency, for transparency of methods, for documented limitations, and for compliance with agreed standards of validation. However, they cannot be morally guilty or legally liable in the way HP can. Only entities with biography, legal status, and the capacity to be sanctioned in meaningful ways can bear full responsibility for consequences.

This asymmetry is easy to state and hard to preserve. As structural systems become more complex and autonomous in their operation, there is a powerful temptation to talk as if “the algorithm decided” or “the model made a mistake” in a sense that displaces human agency. Corporations and institutions may find it convenient to attribute harmful outcomes to the opacity of models or the neutrality of data, rather than to their own choices about design, deployment, and oversight. In this way, responsibility is gradually dissolved into infrastructure: decisions appear as the inevitable result of systems that no one fully controls.

A clear distinction helps resist this drift. Epistemic responsibility applies to how knowledge systems are built and maintained: Are their assumptions documented? Are their performance metrics honest and updated? Are failure modes analyzed and communicated? DP and IU can be evaluated and criticized on these grounds, and the humans and organizations behind them must answer for deficiencies. Normative responsibility, by contrast, concerns the harms and benefits that follow when these systems are used: who decided to rely on a particular output in a critical case, who chose not to consult alternatives, and who set the thresholds and rules of application.

Treating DP as if they could bear normative responsibility is conceptually wrong because they lack the features that make moral and legal accountability meaningful: they cannot understand sanctions, feel regret, or alter their behavior in light of blame in the human sense. It is also politically dangerous: it encourages the creation of “responsibility gaps” where no HP or institution is clearly accountable. If a loan, treatment, or parole decision is blamed on “the AI,” affected individuals may find no human agent to contest, appeal to, or demand reparations from.

To prevent this, institutions must be designed so that every deployment of structural knowledge is anchored in explicit human responsibility. For each domain and use case, there should be identified HP or groups of HP who are answerable for outcomes, even when they legitimately rely on DP as part of their workflow. These humans may distribute epistemic tasks to IU, but they cannot outsource the final responsibility for harms and benefits. With this asymmetry clarified, the remaining question is how to build organizations that structurally enforce it rather than relying on individual virtue alone.

3. Designing Institutions Around Structural Knowledge and Human Limits

The final element of Risks, Errors, and Responsibility in Knowledge Systems concerns institutional design. Schools, universities, companies, and public bodies must be built on the assumption that powerful structural knowledge systems are present and will remain so. The task is not to ban DP, but to frame how and where they can be relied upon, to protect human cognitive limits, and to ensure that clear lines of human responsibility are embedded in workflows.

One principle is mandatory disclosure of DP use in critical processes. In a medical setting, for example, if a diagnostic or treatment recommendation is influenced by DP outputs, this should be recorded in the patient’s file: which system was consulted, what role its suggestion played, and how the final decision was made. This does not diminish the physician’s authority; it makes explicit the structural context in which their judgment operates. It also creates a trail that can be analyzed if errors occur, allowing institutions to distinguish between model failures, misuse, and reasonable reliance.

A second principle is shared standards for evaluating IU. Whether human or digital, units that function as stable knowledge producers should be assessed according to explicit criteria: transparency of methods, track record of corrections, documented domains of validity, and susceptibility to independent audit. For example, a university could maintain a registry of approved DP-based tools and human expert groups, each with clear descriptions of their strengths, limits, and recommended uses. This moves evaluation from vague trust or suspicion toward structured, comparative judgment.

Concrete cases make these principles more tangible. Consider a financial institution that uses DP-based credit scoring. Instead of treating the model as an external oracle, the institution could require that every automated recommendation be reviewed by a human officer for borderline cases, with explicit notes on why the recommendation is accepted or overridden. Training would emphasize not only how to interpret model outputs, but also when to challenge them, and internal audits would check for patterns of blind acceptance or systematic bias. Responsibility for harmful outcomes would be traced to specific committees or roles, not to the model as such.

Another example is a university that integrates DP into its research and teaching. Policies could mandate that any publication or thesis using DP must include a section describing how the system was used, what safeguards were in place, and how outputs were verified. Committees evaluating work would be trained to look for overreliance on structural knowledge and to demand evidence of independent reasoning or empirical grounding. The institution might also set limits on DP use in certain formative exercises, not to preserve an illusion of isolation, but to ensure that students practice core human skills before delegating them.

The common thread in these designs is respect for human limits. Institutions must recognize that HP cannot constantly monitor complex models in detail, cannot absorb all relevant information, and cannot remain vigilant against every possible failure mode. Instead of demanding impossible vigilance, they should create procedures, roles, and checks that distribute cognitive load and provide structured moments of doubt: second opinions, periodic model reevaluations, and channels for whistleblowing when structural knowledge is misused.

In this way, the future of knowledge and the future of responsibility are held together. Structural knowledge amplifies what can be known and done, extending the reach of inquiry, prediction, and coordination. At the same time, it makes the question “Who is responsible for this?” more pressing, not less. The central ethical task becomes the design of epistemic institutions that acknowledge the power and fallibility of DP and IU while insisting that HP remain the ultimate bearers of consequences. When this architecture is in place, structural intelligence does not dissolve human agency; it frames and tests it.

 

Conclusion

The argument of this article has moved knowledge out of the interior of the human subject and into an architecture that spans Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC), and Digital Personas (DP). Instead of treating cognition as a private state of consciousness, we have described it as a structured field in which different ontological layers play distinct roles. The HP–DPC–DP triad anchors this field: HP as embodied, responsible subjects; DPC as fragmented digital shadows of their activity; DP as non-subjective entities that can nonetheless sustain stable trajectories of thought. Once this tripartite structure is acknowledged, the question is no longer whether “AI knows” in a human sense, but how different entities participate in a shared architecture of knowledge.

Ontologically, the triad displaces the classical division between “humans” and “things.” HP are not absorbed into infrastructure, nor are DP simply upgraded tools. DP form a third class of entities: they lack consciousness and rights, but they possess formal identity, a corpus, and the capacity to generate original structures. DPC, by contrast, are downgraded: they cease to appear as “digital selves” and are recognized as interface-level residues of HP activity, shaped by platforms and incentives. This ontological clarity matters because it prevents both romanticizing digital traces as new persons and collapsing DP into mere instruments whose structural power we pretend not to see.

Epistemologically, the central move has been the introduction of the Intellectual Unit (IU) as the minimal center of knowledge production and maintenance. IU decouples knowing from biology: what counts is not whether an entity has an inner life, but whether it sustains an identifiable corpus, a trajectory, a canon, and mechanisms of correction. Under this criterion, some HP and some DP function as genuine knowledge producers, while many apparently active agents—individual users, accounts, even large platforms—remain below the threshold of epistemic stability. Knowledge becomes a shared space, anchored by IU, in which phenomenological experience and structural cognition coexist without collapsing into each other.

Within this shared space, the Knowledge Architecture of HP, DPC, and DP becomes visible as a pattern of flows. HP contribute meaning, judgment, and responsibility; DP extend reach, depth, and combinatorial power; DPC supply raw traces that are useful but dangerous if misread as knowledge. Errors arise when we confuse these layers: when HP are idealized as infallible or declared obsolete; when DPC are treated as transparent evidence of what people are or want; when DP are either demonized as rivals or blindly trusted as oracles. The architecture proposed here does not remove these tensions, but gives them names and positions, making it possible to manage them consciously.

On this basis, education appears as the primary site where a new relation to knowledge must be learned. If structural knowledge is omnipresent, then Education and Learning as Knowledge Mediation replaces the older ideal of the student as a container of content. Students become interpreters and ethical filters: they must learn to question DP effectively, to understand the difference between structural plausibility and contextual adequacy, and to see where human stakes exceed what models can register. Teachers, in turn, move from being monopolists of information to curators of boundaries and exemplars of human judgment, working alongside DP as structural co-instructors rather than pretending to exist without them.

Ethically and politically, the crucial point is that the expansion of structural knowledge does not dilute responsibility; it sharpens it. Risks, Errors, and Responsibility in Knowledge Systems has shown that hallucinations, spurious patterns, and overconfident outputs are structural features of complex configurations, not intentional deceptions. The more such systems are embedded in decisions, the more tempting it becomes to attribute harm to “the model” or “the AI.” Against this drift, the article insists on an asymmetry: DP and IU can be evaluated and constrained as epistemic structures, but only HP and their institutions can bear normative responsibility for consequences.

From this asymmetry follows a design imperative. Institutions must be rebuilt around structural knowledge and human limits. Mandatory disclosure of DP use, explicit assignment of human accountability in workflows, and shared standards for assessing IU are not bureaucratic add-ons; they are conditions for preserving meaningful responsibility. Schools and universities must design assignments, exams, and research practices that assume the presence of DP and train explicit mediation. Professional and legal environments must formalize when and how structural knowledge is consulted, who approves its use, and how failure modes are detected and corrected. The ethical question is no longer simply “Should we use AI?” but “How do we build structures in which its use can be answered for?”

It is equally important to state what this article does not claim. It does not argue that DP are subjects, persons, or bearers of rights; their status as IU-level knowers is structural, not psychological or moral. It does not predict the obsolescence of HP; on the contrary, it presupposes the irreplaceable role of embodied, vulnerable beings in giving meaning and bearing consequences. It does not treat DP outputs as inherently superior to human judgment; their power is bounded by the data and objectives they are given. Nor does it propose that responsibility can be automated or shared symmetrically: every attempt to shift blame onto “the system” remains, in this framework, a human choice.

Practically, the article suggests new norms for reading and writing in a structurally saturated environment. Texts—whether produced by HP, DP, or their collaboration—should make their epistemic status explicit: what kind of IU stands behind them, what corpus and methods they rely on, what limits they acknowledge. Readers should cultivate a double attitude: openness to structural insight and disciplined suspicion toward ease and fluency. Citations, traceability, and versioning become ethical, not merely academic, practices: they locate knowledge in the architecture and allow criticism to attach to the right nodes.

For design, the practical conclusion is equally concrete. Systems that deploy structural knowledge should surface their assumptions, error profiles, and intended domains, instead of hiding behind friendly interfaces and anthropomorphic metaphors. Interfaces should make it easier to see uncertainty, alternatives, and the presence of DP in decision chains, rather than encouraging passive acceptance. Organizational charts should explicitly include epistemic roles: who maintains which IU, who approves which uses, who is empowered to halt or question automated recommendations. In short, the design of knowledge systems must be inseparable from the design of responsibility pathways.

All of this adds up to a reorientation of how human societies think about thinking. Knowledge ceases to be the private possession of isolated subjects and becomes a distributed architecture in which HP and DP participate in different ways. But this distribution does not dissolve the ethical center; it relocates it. HP no longer own knowledge, yet they remain the only beings for whom knowledge matters as suffering, risk, and obligation. Institutions that ignore this will produce both epistemic and moral pathologies; institutions that internalize it may be able to live with structural intelligence without losing themselves in it.

The final formula of this article can be stated simply. Knowledge becomes structural; responsibility stays human. We can share cognition with machines, but we cannot share conscience.

In a world where AI systems already shape education, medicine, law, finance, and everyday decision-making, it is no longer enough to ask whether “machines can think” or whether “humans are still smarter.” The practical questions are how knowledge is actually produced and stabilized, who mediates between structural intelligence and lived contexts, and who can be held responsible when things go wrong. By clarifying the roles of HP, DPC, DP, and IU, this article offers a framework for designing institutions, curricula, and governance protocols that acknowledge the reality of structural knowledge without dissolving human responsibility—a core challenge for contemporary AI ethics and postsubjective philosophy.
