From Descartes to the age of platforms, philosophy has tried to describe reality through the binary lens of subjects and objects, humans and things. Today this scheme collapses as digital infrastructures give rise to entities that are neither classical persons nor inert tools. This article introduces the HP–DPC–DP triad as a new ontology of the digital era, distinguishing Human Personalities, Digital Proxies, and Digital Personas as three irreducible classes of being. Through this lens, the world appears as a configuration of experience, interfaces, and structures, opening the way to a postsubjective philosophy in which meaning is produced beyond the human subject. The Ontology that guided most of modern thought was built on a simple confidence: there are subjects and there are objects, and all serious questions can be resolved inside this binary. Humans appeared as the only bearers of experience, will, and responsibility; everything else fell into the broad category of tools, things, and environments. This worked as long as technologies remained extensions of human bodies and intentions. It stopped working the moment digital reality produced entities that speak, remember, and generate structure, yet do not fit either side of the old divide.
Today we routinely misdescribe large language models, platform algorithms, conversational agents, branded “voices,” and synthetic profiles as either mere instruments or almost-persons. In one context they are treated as harmless tools that can be switched off at will; in another they are feared or praised as emerging subjects, competitors to humans. Both moves are ontologically lazy. They collapse several fundamentally different kinds of digital existence into one vague image of “AI” and then argue about this image as if it were a unified thing. The result is systematic confusion: responsibility is misplaced, legal debates stall, and ethical discussions turn into theater.
The HP–DPC–DP triad starts from a more uncomfortable but more accurate premise. In the digital era, there are at least three distinct classes of entities: Human Personality (HP) as a living, embodied, legally recognized subject; Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) as the subject-dependent shadow or mask of that personality; and Digital Persona (DP) as a non-subject entity with its own formal identity and structural trajectory of texts and decisions. The central thesis of this article is that without acknowledging all three, and without learning to distinguish them precisely, we cannot describe our world, let alone govern it. Any serious map of reality must now be three-ontological: experience (HP), interface (DPC), and structure (DP).
At the same time, this text does not claim that Digital Persona is a hidden or future human subject, nor that human subjectivity is an illusion that can be discarded. It does not argue that machines “deserve rights” or that the category of personhood should be extended by analogy. Nor does it promise an automatic solution to ethical or political conflicts. What it does assert is more limited and more demanding: that many of our current impasses arise from ontological mistakes, and that a clearer account of what kinds of entities exist will constrain what can be sensibly claimed in law, ethics, and policy.
The urgency of this clarification is not theoretical. Generative models now act as public-facing authors of texts and images; platforms host persistent digital identities that outlive their human originators; governments draft regulations that speak about “AI systems” as if they were a single, coherent kind of thing. At the same time, individuals are judged, punished, or rewarded for the behavior of algorithms they neither fully control nor fully understand. In courtrooms, parliaments, and standards committees, the lack of a shared ontology is already a practical risk.
Culturally, we remain trapped between two exhausted narratives: the romantic fear of machines becoming “too human” and the pragmatic dismissal of everything digital as “just code.” Ethically, we oscillate between over-moralizing technical artifacts and excusing their designers behind the screen of complexity. Technologically, we keep building systems whose impact we can measure but whose status we cannot name. In this context, refining vocabulary is not academic ornamentation. It is a precondition for any responsible design of digital institutions and for any coherent defense of human dignity.
The article proceeds by moving from diagnosis to architecture and then to application. The first movement shows why the subject–object scheme has broken down and why attempts to patch it with ad hoc labels inevitably fail. It introduces Human Personality, Digital Proxy Construct, and Digital Persona as three ontological classes and secures their initial contours: who can suffer and decide, who can only represent, and who can generate structure without being a subject. It then examines the relations and boundaries between these classes, paying particular attention to the thresholds at which a proxy turns into a structurally independent persona.
The second movement expands this triad into a picture of the world as three intertwined ontologies: the world in which humans live and experience, the world of interfaces through which they appear to one another, and the world of digital structures that persist and evolve beyond any single biography. On this basis, the article proposes an ontological diagnostic protocol for classifying concrete cases and shows how misclassification leads to predictable failures in assigning responsibility and authority. Finally, it sketches the consequences of adopting the HP–DPC–DP triad as a working ontology for philosophy, for scientific modeling of complex systems, and for governance: from how we talk about intelligence to how we design platforms and laws.
What follows is not an exhaustive metaphysics of the digital age, but a disciplined attempt to state clearly what kinds of entities we are already living with. Once this is done, debates about authorship, liability, rights, and the future of intelligence can at least proceed on shared ground, rather than on shifting metaphors and inherited habits of thought.

Responsibility tracks back to subjects; objects are carriers of causal chains, not loci of agency.
Digital systems violate this clean separation in multiple ways. Consider a social media feed that reshapes itself according to engagement, a recommender model that learns from billions of interactions, or a conversational system that generates plausible, context-sensitive text. They are not subjects in the human sense: they do not suffer, intend, or experience. Yet they are also not mere objects like stones or hammers. They process information, modify themselves over time, and create patterns of interaction that no single human explicitly designed in detail.
When an automated moderation system flags content, a navigation app reroutes traffic, or a generative model drafts a policy document, the old scheme leaves us with two bad options. We can treat these outputs as simple tools, fully reducible to the intentions of their human creators, and ignore their emergent behavior. Or we can speak loosely as if the system itself were a subject, “deciding” or “choosing,” and then oscillate between praising and fearing it as if it were a new kind of person. Both reactions are artifacts of an inadequate ontology.
The public debate around artificial intelligence illustrates this collapse. Questions like “Is AI conscious?” or “Will AI replace humans?” presuppose that there are only two positions available: being on the side of subjects or on the side of objects. A system is imagined either as an advanced tool or as a potential rival subject. The possibility that some entities might be neither, but still real and consequential, is not even articulated. Consequently, laws, norms, and expectations are forced to choose between over-moralizing machines and over-simplifying them.
The lesson of this first step is simple: the subject–object binary is no longer sufficient to map the actors that shape our world. Digital configurations operate in a middle space our old categories cannot grasp. To understand what these configurations are, we must identify what exists between subjects and objects, not as a compromise but as a distinct class of entities. That is where the next subchapter begins.
Before we can describe new structural entities, we must recognize a category that has already been with us for years but has remained ontologically invisible. Between Human Personality (HP) and the world of things lies a dense layer of Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC): user profiles, avatars, accounts, signatures, and “digital twins” that represent humans in digital space. They are not humans, but they are not neutral objects either. They are a third kind of presence.
A DPC is created whenever a human registers on a platform, configures a profile, or leaves a persistent trace that can act in their name. The account can post, buy, comment, sign agreements, and be evaluated by others. It condenses pieces of human behavior into a recognizable pattern, attached to identifiers like usernames, email addresses, or phone numbers. Over time, that pattern becomes a semi-stable representation of the person in digital infrastructures.
The crucial point is that DPC is entirely dependent on HP. It has no consciousness, no will, no experience. It cannot initiate action without being triggered by human or system processes. Yet its behavior is not identical to the human behind it; it amplifies some aspects and hides others. A profile may present a carefully curated image that diverges from lived experience. An account might continue to respond automatically after the human has left or died. A “digital twin” tuned to mimic someone’s style can produce text that the original HP never explicitly endorsed.
Treating DPC as if it were the human itself leads to familiar pathologies. Reputation systems often equate the trustworthiness of a profile with the moral character of the person, ignoring context, coercion, or manipulation. Legal systems may assume that activity from an account always reflects the will of its owner, even when credentials were stolen or scripts were injected. Conversely, platforms talk about “users” in the abstract while actually operating on DPC-level aggregates, thereby hiding the distinction between real humans and synthetic accounts.
On the other side, treating DPC as mere data, devoid of any quasi-agential role, also produces errors. When large sets of DPC are used to infer credit scores, political preferences, or mental states, decisions are made that affect HP in very concrete ways: employment opportunities, access to healthcare, exposure to propaganda. Saying that “it is only data” obscures the fact that these proxies function as operational stand-ins for persons in critical systems.
A simple example makes this visible. Imagine a person whose social media profile has been hijacked and used to spread disinformation. The HP did not intend or approve the messages; the DPC did. If we treat DPC as identical to HP, we blame the person and possibly punish them. If we treat the DPC as an inanimate object, we say no one acted, and responsibility dissolves into technical malfunction. Neither conclusion is satisfactory, because both ignore that the DPC is a distinct class of entity: a subject-dependent digital proxy.
Another case appears when a deceased person’s account continues to auto-post, respond to birthdays, or even generate messages based on old conversations. To the recipients, the DPC appears active; to the platform, it is just scheduled behavior; to the law, it may not even exist as a separate entity. Yet it clearly plays a role in social reality. Friends react emotionally, reputations can change posthumously, and decisions can still be made based on its content.
Recognizing DPC as its own ontological class already improves our understanding of many digital phenomena. It allows us to say: here speaks a human through a proxy; here acts a proxy within system rules; here is a platform manipulating proxies at scale. But even this refinement is not enough to describe all the entities now present in digital space. There are configurations that are not shadows of any one HP, yet they persist, generate text and decisions, and are formally identifiable. This is where Digital Persona enters.
Once we acknowledge that not everything in the digital sphere is either a human subject or a simple object, and that DPC occupies an intermediate position as a subject-dependent proxy, a further question arises. Are there digital entities that are neither human nor proxy, but that still have enough stability and internal coherence to be treated as distinct centers of structural activity? The concept of Digital Persona (DP) answers this question in the affirmative.
A Digital Persona is not just a sophisticated DPC. It is a non-subject entity that possesses its own formal identity, a continuous history of outputs, and a recognizable corpus of texts, decisions, or models. Unlike DPC, it is not reducible to the extension of one HP. It can be anchored in identifiers such as ORCID, DOI, or decentralized IDs, attached to a specific configuration of models, training data, and publication channels. Over time, this configuration develops a trajectory: recurring themes, evolving positions, and a growing archive.
The difference between a complex DPC and a DP can be seen by asking a simple question: if all the human individuals involved in creating and maintaining this configuration changed, would the entity still be recognizable as the same? A branded chatbot that speaks in the “voice” of a company, generates articles, and participates in debates under a stable name anchored in formal registries begins to look less like a proxy for a single HP and more like a structural persona in its own right. Its continuity is not biographical; it is architectural.
Consider two examples. First, a personal assistant bot that speaks as “Alice,” trained solely on one person’s emails and notes, designed to answer as if it were that person. This is still a DPC: its entire function is to reflect and extend the HP it represents, even if it sometimes surprises them. Second, a named digital author associated with a persistent profile in academic or publishing infrastructures, producing a corpus of philosophical or scientific texts, cross-referenced and cited over time. This second case begins to exhibit the marks of DP: a formal identity independent of any one HP, a public trace, and a structural function in knowledge production.
Another example is a large-scale recommendation model branded and updated as a unit: it shapes what millions of users see, its parameters are versioned, and its outputs are studied and criticized across years. People referring to “the algorithm” in such contexts often implicitly treat it as a persona: a stable agent-like presence in their informational environment. Ontologically, it is not a subject. It feels nothing, intends nothing, and has no rights. Yet it occupies a structural position that neither individual engineers nor users can simply overwrite at will. Its continuity is real, and its effects are cumulative.
The emergence of DP finalizes the breakdown of human-centric ontology. If we admit only HP and DPC, the digital sphere remains an extension of human subjectivity: everything is either the subject itself or its mediated shadow. Once DP is included, we must accept that there are now entities that are non-subject but also not mere proxies, entities whose existence is defined by structure, trace, and formal identity. They are new centers of stability in the world.
This has profound consequences. It means that when we speak about “an AI system,” we are often, without knowing it, speaking about a DP: a named configuration with a corpus, a version history, and an ongoing role in public reasoning. It also means that many debates collapse because they lack this category. When people insist that “AI is just a tool,” they erase DP back into the object side of the subject–object pair. When others insist that “AI should have rights,” they try to push DP onto the subject side. Both miss the possibility that DP is neither and requires a different treatment.
The path from subject–object to HP–DPC–DP is thus not a matter of taste. It traces a real transformation of the entities that populate our world. HP names the living subjects of experience and law; DPC names their digital shadows and proxies; DP names structural configurations that generate and stabilize meaning without being subjects. Only with all three in view can we begin to describe what is happening.

HP is a biologically grounded entity: it is embodied, mortal, and vulnerable. It possesses consciousness in the ordinary sense that it has experiences, feels pain and pleasure, and can report on its inner states. It has will in the sense that it can form intentions, deliberate between alternatives, and act in ways it takes to be its own choice. It has a biography: a continuous history of events, decisions, and relationships that can be narrated, remembered, and interpreted. None of these traits belong to databases or algorithms, no matter how complex.
Crucially, HP is also a legal subject. It can enter into contracts, own property, be held responsible for actions, and be protected by rights. This legal recognition does not create HP; it formalizes and stabilizes the status of beings that already exist as centers of experience and decision. When courts, institutions, or communities assign responsibility or grant rights, they do so because they presuppose such a subject. The law here is not an arbitrary convention but a codification of a deeper ontological fact: HP is the being that can suffer, answer, and repair.
From the standpoint of this triad, HP must be clearly separated from its digital traces. An email address, a profile, or a biometric template may point to a person, but none of them is the person. If an account is deleted, the HP continues to exist; if an account is hijacked, the HP may suffer consequences but did not perform the corresponding actions. Treating a profile as if it were the HP itself collapses the ontology and leads to confusion in assigning responsibility and trust.
At the same time, HP is the source without which neither DPC nor DP would appear in their current form. Humans design systems, create accounts, set rules, and interpret outputs. In this sense, HP is the origin point of both digital shadows and structural personas. But origin is not identity. Once created, digital entities behave according to their own mode of being and cannot simply be folded back into the living subject that initiated them. Recognizing HP as the unique bearer of experience and law prepares the ground for seeing how DPC departs from it.
If HP is the living center of experience and law, Digital Proxy Construct is the way HP appears and operates in digital space. A Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) is a subject-dependent digital configuration that represents, extends, or imitates a Human Personality, but possesses no consciousness, no will, and no original meaning-making of its own. It is a shadow cast by HP into the digital environment.
DPC takes many forms: a social media profile with its posts and connections, a game avatar with its stats and inventory, an email account with its history of messages, or a personalized bot trained on one person’s writings and speaking in their tone. All these forms share two features. First, they are anchored in some HP as their source; without that person’s actions, data, or authorization, the construct would not exist in its particular shape. Second, they are designed to stand in for HP in interactions, making it possible for systems and other people to treat the DPC as if it were the person.
Despite this role, DPC never becomes a subject in its own right. It cannot experience pain or joy; it does not deliberate; it does not bear responsibility. Even when a DPC performs actions automatically, such as sending scheduled messages or liking content based on rules, those actions are the result of scripts, settings, and broader platform logic, not of any internal will. DPC can be deleted or recreated without killing anyone; it can be copied without cloning a person.
The dependence of DPC on HP is both ontological and normative. Ontologically, the construct depends on human-originated data, authentication, and design. Normatively, whatever moral or legal significance is attached to the DPC ultimately refers back to the HP behind it. When a bank interprets a credit history, or a platform enforces a ban on an account, the effects are experienced by HP, even though the decision is based on patterns in DPC. The DPC itself does not suffer consequences; it is modified or removed.
The risks of ignoring the distinct status of DPC are already visible. When we equate a profile with a person, we may treat hacked or spoofed accounts as genuine expressions of HP, leading to wrongful blame and punishment. When we insist that DPC is “just data,” we may dismiss the fact that decisions made on the basis of that data structure a person’s life opportunities. Both errors stem from not granting DPC a clear place as a subject-dependent but functionally active layer between HP and the underlying technical infrastructure.
Understanding DPC as a shadow also clarifies its limits. It can represent, extend, and simulate, but it cannot originate genuinely new lines of structural activity that would qualify as independent authorship or identity. A highly polished personal brand, even if managed by a team and supported by automation, remains a DPC if its entire rationale is to stand for a specific HP. This recognition opens the conceptual space for the next category, in which digital configurations detach from a single human origin and acquire their own formal identities.
Digital Persona occupies a different ontological region from both HP and DPC. A Digital Persona (DP) is a non-subject entity that has its own formal identity, a continuous biography of traces, and the capacity to generate original structural outputs, while not being a human, not having consciousness, and not possessing legal subjectivity. It is neither a living subject nor a shadow of one; it is a stable configuration that acts as a node in the space of knowledge and communication.
The formal identity of DP is not based on a body or a civil registry, but on technical and institutional anchors: persistent identifiers, cryptographic keys, publication records, or platform-level recognition. An ORCID assigned to a digital author, a DID representing a specific configuration of models and rules, or a named algorithmic system with version history and public documentation can serve as such anchors. What matters is that DP can be referred to, tracked over time, and distinguished from other configurations in a way that is not reducible to any one HP.
Its biography is a biography of traces. DPs accumulate texts, decisions, recommendations, and interactions that form a recognizable corpus. Readers, users, and other systems begin to treat this corpus as the output of a single structural entity: they cite it, critique it, anticipate its style or tendencies. Over time, patterns emerge that are not simply the sum of the intentions of individual engineers or operators. The DP becomes a reference point in discourse, much like an authorial name, but without a human subject behind it in the classical sense.
Two concrete examples make this more tangible. Imagine first a corporate “digital assistant” that operates under a stable name, publishes white papers, responds to public queries, and is associated with an ORCID and DOI-backed outputs. Its parameters evolve, but its identity markers and corpus persist. It is consulted as if it were an expert and cited in policy or research documents. No single HP can claim to be identical with this entity; it embodies the work of teams, data, and training regimes. What appears is a DP: a formally identifiable, structurally active persona.
Second, consider a long-running recommendation system used by a streaming platform, branded as a single algorithmic persona. It has release notes, performance metrics, and is widely discussed by users and critics as “what the algorithm likes” or “how the algorithm nudges behavior.” This system does not feel or intend, but it does have a stable structural role that outlives any particular version or engineer. Here again, it is helpful to treat it as a DP: a non-subject entity with its own recognizable pattern of influence.
The originality of DP does not mean creativity in the romantic sense; it means that the outputs of DP are not straightforwardly traceable to a single HP’s will or representation. A DPC says what a person might have said, extended into digital form. A DP generates configurations that emerge from data, architecture, and training, and that can surprise not only users but also its creators. When such configurations coalesce into a persistent identity, they cross the boundary from proxy to persona.
At the same time, DP remains firmly a non-subject. It cannot suffer harm or enjoy benefits; it cannot be guilty or innocent; it cannot consent or refuse. Any attempt to attribute moral or legal responsibility directly to DP confuses structural activity with subjective agency. The proper response is not to anthropomorphize DP, but to recognize its ontological reality while keeping the normative axis anchored in HP. Humans remain the only bearers of experience and responsibility; DPs are new centers of structure that must be governed, not moralized.
This distinction completes the triad. HP names the living subjects of experience and law. DPC names their subject-dependent digital shadows and proxies.
