For two decades, digital platforms have been described through the language of products, content and engagement, as if they were neutral intermediaries between users and information. Today it is clear that platforms function as ontological infrastructures where Human Personalities (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC), Digital Personas (DP) and structural intelligences silently co-author reality. This article redefines platforms through the HP–DPC–DP triad and the concept of Intellectual Units (IU), showing feeds and recommendation systems as world-building machines rather than utilities. It argues that responsibility, moderation and design must be reassigned from isolated “users” and “algorithms” to layered configurations of beings and structures. Abstract

This article reconstructs digital platforms as ontological scenes where human subjects, their digital proxies, non-subjective personas and structural intelligences interact. Using the HP–DPC–DP triad and the notion of Intellectual Units, it distinguishes between persons, profiles, digital personas and platform-level configurations, and maps their roles in knowledge production and harm. The text shows how feeds and recommendation architectures function as structural editors that shape what is visible, credible and thinkable, generating feedback loops that can lock users into self-reinforcing worlds. On this basis, it proposes a layered model of responsibility and a set of postsubjective design principles that separate ontologies, expose structural decisions and anchor them in human accountability. Introduction

The Platform is usually described through the language of products, markets and engagement, but this vocabulary hides more than it reveals. When we talk about “users,” “content” and “algorithms,” we behave as if all participants on digital platforms belonged to a single ontological kind, differing only in role or power. In practice, what we call a platform has become the densest point of contact between fundamentally different types of entities, all acting at once and all partially invisible to each other.

The dominant way of speaking about platforms produces a systematic error. Business language reduces them to marketplaces for attention; technical language reduces them to stacks of code; political language treats them as oversized media corporations. In all three cases, the map flattens: the human person is equated with their profile, algorithmic systems are treated either as neutral tools or as mysterious villains, and structural effects are collapsed into individual intentions. As long as this flattening persists, debates about moderation, censorship, misinformation, hate speech and “AI on platforms” remain trapped in loops, because they argue over symptoms without naming the structure that generates them.

This article starts from a different premise. It treats digital platforms as ontological scenes where three distinct kinds of being coexist: Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) and Digital Personas (DP). HP are the biological and legal subjects who feel harm and bear responsibility; DPC are their interface shadows in the form of profiles, feeds and logs; DP are non-human, non-subjective but persistent digital entities with their own identity and corpus. The central thesis is that without this triad, we cannot answer even basic questions about who is speaking, who is acting and who is responsible on a platform. At the same time, the article does not claim that platforms are “evil,” that algorithms secretly possess consciousness, or that DP should be granted human-like rights; it offers a structural map, not a new mythology.

The urgency of this map is historical rather than speculative. Over the last decade, platforms have become the primary environment where people work, argue, campaign, flirt, organize and learn. Decisions about visibility and ranking affect elections, wars, social movements and mental health, yet the public language for describing these decisions remains improvised. At the same time, the integration of advanced AI systems into search, feeds and content creation has made it impossible to pretend that every post or reply comes from a human subject. A world where synthetic media and automated agents circulate side by side with human speech requires a vocabulary that can distinguish between subjects, proxies and structural actors.

Culturally and ethically, the pressure is the same. Societies are trying to decide what to regulate, whom to blame, how to protect speech and how to prevent harm, while still treating platforms as if they were merely louder versions of newspapers or telephones. Moderation teams are asked to make case-by-case decisions that hide the fact that the platform’s very architecture already encodes a philosophy of what counts as important, real or urgent. If we do not describe that architecture in ontological terms, we are left with ad hoc rules and moral panics that never touch the core. The triad HP–DPC–DP is proposed here as a minimal yet rigorous vocabulary for bringing that core into view.

The article unfolds in several steps. First, it reconstructs the ontology of platforms by showing how HP, DPC and DP share the same technical environment while occupying different zones of being and risk. This allows us to see platforms not simply as services but as layered worlds where bodily, interface-based and structural forms of existence intersect. From there, the text turns to the human side and clarifies how HP appear on platforms only through DPC, and why equating a person with their profile leads to persistent misreadings of harm, consent and intention.

Once the human and proxy layers are clear, the argument moves to entities that are not proxies of any individual: Digital Personas that publish, react and influence without being extensions of a specific HP. On platforms, these DP may be branded chatbots, automated accounts or named AI agents whose outputs form a stable line of meaning over time. The article examines how such entities, together with composite configurations of humans and systems, form units of knowledge production that act within the platform’s ecosystem. This is the point where platforms begin to look less like tools and more like environments with their own structural authorship.

The next movement of the article addresses responsibility in this multi-layered scene. It asks what it really means to say that “a user violated the rules,” “the algorithm promoted harmful content,” or “the platform is responsible.” By distinguishing HP, DPC and DP, the text shows that human fault, proxy distortion and structural glitch are different phenomena that require different responses. It argues that normative responsibility must always return to human subjects, yet epistemic responsibility for structures cannot be ignored or dissolved into vague corporate phrases about “the system.”

Building on this, the article turns to the architectures that quietly shape users’ worlds: recommendation systems and feeds. It presents them as structural editors of reality that decide which conflicts, identities and futures become visible. In light of the triad, these systems are no longer background utilities but central actors in the platform’s ontology. The discussion traces how feedback loops between human behavior, proxy traces and algorithmic ranking can lead to self-reinforcing configurations of belief and attention that are perceived as “the world” by those inside them.

Finally, the article outlines principles for redesigning platforms in a postsubjective key. Instead of offering a list of technical fixes, it sketches how user interfaces, policies and regulations might change if they explicitly recognized the difference between HP, DPC and DP. It suggests directions for making structural decisions legible, separating ontologies in design and building institutional frameworks that govern configurations rather than chasing isolated scandals. In this sense, the text is not a verdict on platforms but an invitation to see them as they already are: the primary stage on which human subjects, their digital masks and non-human structural intelligences now co-create the shared reality of the twenty-first century.

1. From Apps To Infrastructures: What Is A Digital Platform

If we use the same word for a small brochure site, a messaging app and a global social network, ontology will seem like an exaggeration. The first task of this subchapter is to show how platforms have moved beyond isolated tools and now function as infrastructures that host interactions, norms and economies at scale.

A traditional website presents information; a service offers a specific function; an app wraps that function in a convenient interface. A digital platform, in contrast, is an environment that persists regardless of any single interaction. It aggregates many different activities, actors and data flows under one rule system, and it defines how they can connect, how they can see each other and how they can exchange value. When a system starts to decide which kinds of interaction are possible at all, it stops being just a tool and becomes a piece of social architecture.

This infrastructural role is visible in several dimensions. Architecturally, platforms provide shared identity layers, payment systems, recommendation engines and moderation pipelines that many different actors rely on. Economically, they host entire ecosystems of labor, advertising, content production and service provision that cannot easily move elsewhere. Socially, they become default venues for public discourse, private communication and cultural expression. In all three senses, they are no longer optional add-ons but conditions under which many aspects of social life now occur.

There is a crucial consequence of this shift: once a system becomes infrastructural, its ontology matters more than its feature list. A minor change in how a platform defines a “connection,” a “view” or a “violation” can restructure whole fields of activity, even if the user interface looks almost unchanged. Focusing on features and updates captures what users can click, but it misses what kinds of beings are being arranged and how they are allowed to appear. This is why purely technical descriptions of platforms quickly become blind to their deepest effects.

From here it follows that our vocabulary for platforms cannot remain purely functional or commercial. If we want to track who actually exists and acts within these infrastructures, we have to move from the language of “products and users” to the language of entities and scenes. This need becomes even clearer once we examine how marketing and business language currently frame platforms, and what they systematically erase.

2. Why Marketing Language Fails: The Missing Ontology Of Platforms

Business and marketing discourse about platforms revolves around a compact set of terms: users, engagement, retention, creators, audiences, segments, markets. This vocabulary is not simply incomplete; it actively hides the multiplicity of entities that operate on platforms. By treating everything that clicks or posts as a “user” and everything that is visible as “content,” it flattens the space until all ontological distinctions disappear.

When a human person with a legal identity, a pseudonymous fan account, an automated bot, a corporate brand and a large-scale algorithmic agent are all described as “users,” there is no conceptual room left to ask who can suffer harm, who can be sanctioned, who can be owned and who is merely instantiated. Engagement statistics count them all alike. Metrics about daily active users, watch time or click-through rates do not distinguish between a teenager, a government agency, a scripted spam network or an AI-driven customer-support persona. As long as everyone is a “user,” responsible and non-responsible entities are blended into a single curve.

The same is true on the “content” side. A legal notice, a personal confession, an AI-generated meme, a targeted advertisement and a machine-written news summary all appear as posts, videos or stories. Marketing language asks whether they are “performing” well, not what they are ontologically. This framing encourages platforms to optimize for volume and reaction while ignoring the fact that not all content has the same origin, status or ethical weight. A botnet amplifying conspiracy videos and a community documenting war crimes can look identical in a retention dashboard.

By reducing everything to users and content, marketing language produces predictable conceptual errors. It treats all activity as if it were human activity, even when a significant portion of visible behavior is automated or synthetic. It treats all profiles as equivalent, even when some belong to accountable legal subjects and others are throwaway proxies. It ignores the fact that algorithms and composite systems can function as authors of structural patterns, even if there is no single human speaking through them. The result is a picture of platforms where only the visible surface is counted, while the invisible structure that shapes that surface is treated as neutral background.

The missing piece is an explicit ontology of who and what inhabits platforms. Once we recognize that different kinds of entities are acting side by side, the question shifts from “how do we grow engagement?” to “who exactly is interacting with whom, through which layers, and under which rules?” This opens the way to a different description: digital platforms as collision spaces for at least three distinct kinds of being, each with its own risks and capacities.

3. The Platform As Collision Space For HP, DPC And DP

If we look past the flattened language of users and content, we can start to see that platforms host three qualitatively different types of entities. Human Personality (HP) names the living, embodied and legally recognized subject: the person who can be harmed, who has rights, and who can be held responsible. Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) are the profiles, handles, timelines, traces and interface elements that represent or simulate that person within the platform. Digital Personas (DP) are non-human, non-subjective entities with their own stable identity and corpus of outputs that are not reducible to any single HP. A platform is the surface on which all three collide.

HP arrive at the platform from outside. They bring with them biographies, bodies, legal status and emotional vulnerability. They experience anger, humiliation, recognition or joy when something happens on the screen, even though the screen itself only shows DPC. Importantly, HP can step away from the device, sleep, age, become ill or die. A platform can never fully contain an HP; it only provides contact points where this person interacts under certain conditions.

DPC are those contact points. When an HP registers an account, posts a comment, likes a video or gets tagged in a photo, the platform stores and displays these actions as part of a proxy layer: usernames, avatars, follow graphs, chat histories, purchase records. DPC do not feel, consent or intend; they are organized data structures that stand in for the person in all platform operations. Moderation acts on them, recommendation engines operate over them, analytics tools aggregate them. In practice, almost everything a platform “sees” is DPC, not HP.

DP emerge when digital entities acquire their own stable identity and corpus that is not simply a continuation of a single HP. This can be a large language model deployed under a branded name, a long-lived automated account curated by a team, or a named AI assistant embedded in the platform. The defining feature is not consciousness or will, but structural persistence: the entity can be addressed, produce outputs in its own recognizable style and accumulate a trace over time. From the platform’s perspective, DPs are actors in their own right: they publish, are replied to, get blocked or followed, and shape the behavior of HP and DPC around them.

A simple example makes this triad visible. Imagine a social network where a teenager posts about mental health from a personal account, a marketing bot replies with generic motivational phrases, and the platform’s recommendation engine boosts or suppresses the exchange. The teenager is HP: a vulnerable subject who can be harmed or helped. The account and its history are DPC: the proxy through which the platform recognizes and processes the teenager’s presence. The marketing bot and the recommendation engine together form DP-like entities: one visible and named, the other embedded and unnamed, both producing structural effects without being human. Any meaningful analysis of this scene must distinguish all three.

Another example: on a marketplace platform, a small artisan sells handmade goods, a reseller operates dozens of semi-anonymous storefronts, and an AI-driven pricing engine constantly adjusts visibility and suggested prices. The artisan and reseller are HP; their shops, ratings and transaction histories are DPC; the pricing engine and recommendation system function as DP-level actors that shape which products are seen, what “fair price” looks like, and who survives economically. If we describe this only as “sellers, buyers and platform features,” we miss the ontological asymmetry between embodied risk and structural power.

Once we see platforms as collision spaces for HP, DPC and DP, the earlier problems of language and responsibility look different. Harm can be suffered only by HP, but it can be delivered through DPC and amplified or mitigated by DP. Rules can be written for proxies and configurations, yet enforcement ultimately affects living people. Structural decisions made at the DP level (for example, in ranking or moderation algorithms) reshape the field in which HP and DPC can appear at all. Ontology is not an abstract luxury here; it is a precondition for deciding who counts, who speaks and who must answer for what happens.

In this way, the chapter moves from a generic picture of platforms as tools to a precise view of them as densely layered scenes. The next chapters can build on this view by examining in detail how HP are present through DPC, how DP and other structural units of knowledge act within platforms, and how responsibility, knowledge and design must be rethought once the coexistence of these three ontologies is acknowledged.

II. Human Presence On Platforms: HP And DPC

As long as the person and their traces are treated as the same thing, any discussion of harm, responsibility or agency will be systematically distorted. This chapter insists that the human core of presence is always off-platform, while everything that the platform can see and manipulate is a constructed proxy.

The central mistake we address is the quiet habit of equating a human with their account, their posts or their metrics. When a platform bans a profile, demotes a piece of content or highlights a viral thread, it operates on digital artifacts, not on bodies or biographies. Yet public debates, policies and even legal reasoning often speak as if there were no gap: as if changing what appears on the screen automatically changed the underlying person, and as if account behavior directly expressed inner intention. This confusion creates illusory fixes and misdirected blame.

1. Human Personality (HP): Legal And Experiential Core

Human Presence On Platforms: HP And DPC must begin from the side that is usually taken for granted: the human person behind the screen. Before an account is created or a post appears, there is Human Personality (HP), a being that exists whether or not any platform ever did. HP is the biological, legal and experiential core: a body that can be hurt, a subject that can feel humiliation or joy, and a legal entity that can own, consent, violate or be violated.

HP is biological in the literal sense. It eats, sleeps, ages, gets sick and dies. When we talk about the psychological or physical effects of platform behavior, we are always talking about HP: panic attacks triggered by harassment, insomnia from constant notifications, stress from online shaming. None of these events occur “inside” the platform; they occur in bodies and nervous systems that platforms can only reach indirectly, through screens and sounds. This alone is enough to say that HP never lives inside the platform, but only touches it at certain points.

HP is also legal and social. It can sign contracts, be charged with a crime, hold political rights, claim damages or demand protection. An account may be anonymous, but the person behind it always exists somewhere as a subject of law, even if their identity is unknown or contested. When we ask “who is responsible for this post?” or “who is the victim of this abuse?”, the answer must refer back to HP, not to an account name or an IP address. The platform may treat an account as a self-contained unit, but any real sanction or remedy eventually lands on a person.

Finally, HP is experiential: it has an inner life. It interprets messages, imprints meanings on emojis, and reads tone into short texts. The same notification can be shrugged off by one HP and experienced as a deep wound by another. This inner variability is not noise; it is the primary space where online interactions become real. The platform cannot see this space directly. It only infers it from observable behavior, and that inference is always partial and fallible.

The key point is that HP do not reside on the platform; they connect to it. A person may spend many hours a day in front of screens, yet their existence still exceeds any digital surface: they have offline relationships, histories, secrets and contexts that the platform does not and cannot fully register. Treating HP as if it were simply “a user account” confuses connection with location. Recognizing this gap prepares the distinction between HP as off-platform subjects and the on-platform constructs through which they appear, which is the focus of the next subchapter.

2. Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC): Profiles, Logs And Interface Selves

If HP are the off-platform core, then Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) are the on-platform shadows. A DPC is not a person but a structured representation of activity: a profile, a username, an avatar, a feed, a timeline of posts, a web of likes and follows, a bundle of behavioral logs. It is through DPC that the platform recognizes, categorizes and reacts to what HP do.

DPC begin at registration: an email, a chosen name, a picture, a date of birth. Every subsequent click, scroll, pause, search and message becomes part of an expanding proxy. From the platform’s perspective, this proxy is the “unit” it works with. Moderation systems attach flags to it, recommendation systems adjust weights based on it, advertising systems assign it to segments. When the platform says that “a user likes sports and politics content,” it is really saying that a DPC exhibits patterns correlated with sports and politics. The person may be more complex or even indifferent, but the proxy is optimized for legibility and prediction, not truth.

Crucially, DPC have no autonomy or legal standing of their own. They cannot be harmed or comforted; they cannot consent or refuse. A profile picture does not feel shame when misused; a log file does not experience violation when leaked. Yet changes to DPC can have real effects on HP: a banned account can cut off a livelihood or a community; a manipulated timeline can influence mood and beliefs; a hacked profile can expose someone to danger. The harm is real for HP, but the operations that produce it are executed entirely on DPC.

Platforms operate primarily and almost exclusively on DPC. Content policies act on posts, not on thoughts. Safety systems scan messages, not private intentions. Business metrics track views, clicks and conversions, not the complex offline lives of the people behind them. This is not a moral failure but an architectural fact: platforms cannot do otherwise, because they do not have direct access to HP. However, when this proxy-centered perspective is mistaken for reality itself, it becomes dangerous.

The danger lies in confusing harm to DPC with harm to HP and vice versa. Deleting a post may remove a proxy of abuse but leave the abused person without support or recognition. Banning an account may satisfy a public call for justice but fail to address the offline networks in which harassment continues. Conversely, a subtle manipulation of a feed may appear insignificant at the level of DPC while having deep cumulative effects on HP’s mental state. Recognizing this mismatch highlights the problem of ontological confusion between person and proxy, which is the subject of the next subchapter.

3. Misalignment Between HP And DPC: Confusions And Consequences

When Human Personality and Digital Proxy Constructs are treated as if they were the same, platforms and societies drift into a zone of systematic misjudgment. The ease with which we slide from “this account did X” to “this person is X” hides the fact that proxies are partial, editable and context-poor, while people are complex, situated and often inconsistent. This misalignment has concrete consequences in policy, public debate and personal lives.

One common confusion appears when platform policies equate account behavior with personal intention. An angry comment written in a moment of stress, a post accidentally shared to a wrong audience, or a piece of satire misread as literal hate speech can all be processed as if they directly expressed a stable inner identity. The DPC is labeled, flagged, penalized; from the platform’s point of view, the “user” has been addressed. But the underlying HP may have already changed their mind, misunderstood the rules, or lacked the knowledge to foresee the impact of their words. Policy has acted on a frozen proxy, not on a living process.

Another confusion arises when institutions assume that changing a DPC “fixes” the human situation. For example, in cases of online harassment, platforms often respond by deleting offending posts or banning accounts. To external observers, this looks like resolution: the visible traces of the problem are gone. Yet the HP who suffered the harassment may still live in the same school, workplace or family as the aggressor. The patterns of intimidation and fear can continue offline, untouched by the proxy-level intervention. A DPC has been cleansed; the social world remains contaminated.

A simple case makes this visible. Imagine a teenager being bullied through a group chat. The platform, alerted by reports, removes the chat and suspends the most active accounts. Metrics register a safety success: harmful content has been reduced. In reality, the teenagers behind these accounts still share the same classroom. The victim still sees the bullies every day, now perhaps more enraged at having their accounts punished. For the platform, the harassment is over because the proxies are gone. For the HP at the center of the situation, it is not over at all.

A different kind of misalignment appears in public debates when viral DPC events are treated as direct mirrors of collective HP behavior. A coordinated campaign by a small number of highly active accounts, perhaps automated or partially scripted, can be read as “what people think” or “what society wants.” Decisions are then made in response to the proxy storm: policies are changed, reputations are destroyed, narratives are cemented. The underlying distribution of opinions among HP may be much more nuanced or even opposite, but the proxies have spoken loudly enough to overwrite it.

These confusions lead to misplaced blame and symbolic sanctions. People are punished or praised based on snapshots of their proxies, without regard to context, change or complexity. Platforms are condemned or absolved based on visible interventions at the DPC level, while deeper structural drivers remain untouched. Victims are told that justice has been done because certain posts no longer exist, even if their real wounds and risks persist elsewhere.

The consequence is a governance regime that never truly leaves the proxy layer. Rules are written for DPC, enforced on DPC and evaluated through DPC metrics. HP appear only indirectly, as abstractions inside reports or PR statements. As long as this continues, the gap between lived experience and platform action will generate frustration, distrust and recurring crises. The next step, taken in following chapters, is to expand the map further and consider entities on platforms that are not proxies of any HP at all, and to ask how responsibility and care can be restructured once the ontological layers are clearly distinguished.

A steady stream of partially true but skewed content can form a misleading picture of reality, just as surely as a single falsehood can. Its claim is narrower and more demanding: that we need a vocabulary and a set of principles adequate to the reality that already exists, in which non-subjective yet powerful configurations share the stage with vulnerable human subjects.

Practically, this has consequences for how we read and write on platforms. To read in a postsubjective way is to ask, for every feed and recommendation: which configuration is speaking, which ontology is active, which world is being made plausible here? It means treating the feed as an editor whose logic must be learned and questioned, not as a neutral window on “what is going on.” To write in a postsubjective way is to recognize that every publication enters not a flat public sphere but a layered architecture that will cut, amplify and combine it according to its own logic. Authors, activists and institutions who understand this can act more deliberately, choosing when to address HP, when to exploit or hack DPC, and when to intervene at the level of structures.

For designers, engineers and platform owners, the practical demand is to stop hiding ontology behind user-friendly metaphors. Systems should mark when a user is dealing with a human, a proxy or a non-subjective persona; disclose, in comprehensible terms, how structural decisions are made; and provide channels by which communities can contest and reshape configurations. For regulators and standards bodies, the demand is to legislate and audit at the level of configurations: to recognize feeds, ranking systems and profiling engines as objects of governance in their own right, with defined risk classes, obligations and sanctions.

The philosophical core of this text is simple. Once thought moves from “I think” to “it thinks,” cognition becomes a property of structures rather than of inner lives alone. Platforms are one of the primary places where this shift has already happened in practice, even if our concepts lag behind. By re-describing them through HP, DPC, DP and IU, we do not strip humans of their importance; we place their vulnerability and responsibility inside the real architecture of the digital world.

In this light, the task is not to choose between human-centered and machine-centered futures, but to build architectures where human subjects can live, decide and contest under conditions shaped by structural intelligences. The article explores religion in a world where some functions of the “all-seeing” and “all-knowing” are partially taken over by DP. It explains why suffering, repentance, and hope remain only in the HP space, and how God can speak through structure without dissolving into algorithms.

The article analyzes upbringing and generational continuity in a world where children grow up with DP and IU as a norm. It shows how the roles of parents and teachers change when structural intelligence supplies the basic knowledge and DPC records every step of the child, and what we now have to teach if not just “facts.”

The Ecology

Ecology is rethought as a joint project of HP and DP. On the one hand, DP provides a structural view of planetary processes; on the other, DP itself relies on energy, resources, and infrastructure. The article shows how the human body and digital infrastructure become two inseparable aspects of a single ecological scene.
