For centuries, responsibility in law, ethics, and everyday life was anchored in a single ontological figure: the human subject who decides, acts, and bears the consequences. With the rise of large-scale AI systems, Digital Personas, and algorithmic infrastructures, this simple picture silently collapsed, while our vocabulary remained the same. This article uses the HP–DPC–DP triad and the notion of Intellectual Unit (IU) to separate epistemic responsibility for knowledge structures from normative responsibility for harm, guilt, and sanction. It argues that only Human Personality (HP) can meaningfully bear blame, even when Digital Persona (DP) is the visible actor in decision chains. Written in Koktebel.
This article reconstructs the architecture of responsibility in AI-mediated systems through the HP–DPC–DP triad and the concept of Intellectual Unit. The article assumes four core concepts. Human Personality (HP) designates the biological, conscious, legally recognized subject that can bear rights, duties, and sanctions. Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) names subject-dependent digital shadows and interfaces such as accounts, profiles, and bots that speak on behalf of HP but have no autonomy. Digital Persona (DP) denotes a structurally independent digital entity with its own formal identity and corpus, yet without consciousness or legal personhood. Intellectual Unit (IU) describes any stable architecture of knowledge production and revision, whether grounded in HP or DP, and is used to separate epistemic functions from normative status.
The Responsibility: Human Accountability in a Three-Ontology World is no longer a simple matter of asking “who pushed the button.” For centuries, law, morality, and everyday blame operated on one quiet axiom: only a biological, conscious human can be responsible. Today we routinely speak about “AI decisions,” “algorithmic harms,” and “machine accountability,” as if these phrases described coherent moral facts rather than metaphors stretched to the breaking point. The vocabulary did not notice that the ontology underneath it has changed.
The current way of talking about responsibility around AI produces a systematic error. We alternate between two equally misleading moves: either we treat artificial systems as mere tools, erasing their structural role in producing outcomes, or we personify them, treating “the AI” as a quasi-agent that can be praised, blamed, or punished. In both cases, the real architecture of action disappears: complex chains linking human designers, operators, owners, regulators, and the digital configurations they set in motion. As a result, responsibility gaps open up precisely where the stakes are highest: in medicine, finance, infrastructure, information flows, and war.
The HP–DPC–DP triad and the notion of Intellectual Unit (IU) expose what has actually happened. Human Personality (HP) remains the biological and legal subject; Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) mediates and represents HP in the digital sphere; Digital Persona (DP) emerges as a non-subjective yet structurally independent source of knowledge and decisions. IU names the unit that produces and maintains coherent knowledge, whether human or digital. Together they show that the production of knowledge and the production of consequences have been separated across different kinds of entities. The old subject-centered picture, where the one who knows, decides, and suffers is always the same HP, no longer matches reality.
The central thesis of this article is that any serious AI responsibility framework must strictly distinguish between epistemic responsibility and normative responsibility. Epistemic responsibility concerns the structure, consistency, and documented limits of the knowledge that a system produces; normative responsibility concerns harm, duty, guilt, and sanction in the human sense. Digital Persona and Intellectual Unit can meaningfully bear the first kind of responsibility but never the second. All chains of normative responsibility must close on one or more Human Personalities, even when DP and IU play decisive roles in the decision-making pipeline. At the same time, the article does not argue that humans alone “really act” and machines are irrelevant, nor does it claim that AI deserves rights, moral status, or legal personhood.
The question is urgent because the deployment of AI has become infrastructural rather than experimental. Generative models co-author medical documentation and legal drafts; recommendation systems shape attention, elections, and markets; scoring algorithms decide who receives credit, housing, or parole. In many of these cases, no single human feels responsible, yet concrete harms occur. Public debates oscillate between panic (“rogue AI”) and resignation (“the system is too complex to blame anyone”), while regulatory efforts struggle to pin liability on actors who insist that “the model did it.” Without a sharper ontology, both overreaction and underreaction remain likely.
There is also a cultural and ethical urgency. Narratives about “AI responsibility” are being weaponized in opposite directions: some use them to argue that AI should be treated as a moral agent, nudging public opinion toward recognizing “machine rights”; others invoke “black box algorithms” as a way to hide very human decisions behind a curtain of technical inevitability. In both cases, anthropomorphic language becomes a tool of power, not clarity. The HP–DPC–DP framework, combined with the distinction between epistemic and normative responsibility, is offered here as a way to cut through this fog without denying the real novelty of digital configurations.
This article proceeds by reconstructing and then carefully breaking the inherited concept of responsibility. The first chapter revisits the classical paradigm in which responsibility was a property of the human subject, and shows how law and ethics fused knowing, deciding, and suffering into a single figure: the person who could be blamed or praised. It then tracks the point at which complex AI systems began to act as de facto decision-makers, revealing the cracks in this once-stable picture without yet offering a replacement.
The second chapter introduces the decisive move: separating epistemic from normative responsibility and placing them within the HP–DPC–DP triad. There the article argues that IU and DP can and must be held to standards of intellectual discipline, transparency, and corrigibility, while only HP can meaningfully bear guilt, duty, or sanction. This is where the human subject reappears not as the sole producer of knowledge, but as the only possible bearer of moral and legal consequence.
The third chapter then maps responsibility across HP, DPC, and DP in concrete configurations. It clarifies how human subjects, their digital proxies, and digital personas jointly participate in chains of action and failure. Rather than treating “the system” as an opaque whole, the chapter shows which layer can fail in which way and what kind of responsibility each failure triggers. This is the bridge from abstract ontology to the real architectures of platforms, institutions, and infrastructures.
The fourth chapter moves from mapping to assignment. It proposes a protocol that distributes responsibility among different HP roles surrounding DP and IU: developers who shape capabilities and limits, operators who decide where and how systems are used, owners and regulators who set governance frameworks. The aim is to ensure that every high-impact decision mediated by DP has at least one clearly identifiable HP who can be answerable for it, without collapsing all blame onto a single scapegoat or dissolving it in vague systemic talk.
Finally, the fifth chapter addresses the psychological and political temptations to “give AI responsibility.” It analyzes why blaming or praising DP feels emotionally and rhetorically convenient, how such moves can be exploited by corporations and institutions, and what is lost when responsibility is displaced from human actors onto digital configurations. By confronting these misconceptions directly, the article seeks not only to articulate a new framework but to defend it against the most predictable misreadings.
Taken together, these movements aim to turn an abstract ontological insight into a practical tool. The Responsibility: Human Accountability in a Three-Ontology World is not a call to fear or worship AI, but a proposal for how to think and legislate in a reality where digital entities co-produce knowledge and outcomes. By the end of the article, responsibility is neither mystified as an emergent property of machines nor reduced to an outdated humanism; instead, it is re-grounded in Human Personality while fully acknowledging the structural power of Digital Persona and Intellectual Units in shaping what happens.
Responsibility Before HP–DPC–DP: The Old Paradigm is the chapter that reconstructs the world in which responsibility was still presumed to be simple. Its local task is precise: to show how deeply law, morality, and everyday judgment depended on one silent assumption, that a single human subject is always the one who knows, decides, and bears consequences. Before we can redesign responsibility for a three-ontology world, we have to see clearly how the old picture worked in its own terms.
The key risk this chapter removes is the illusion that the current confusion around AI is something entirely new or purely technical. Early debates about “AI responsibility” became hysterical or incoherent because they tried to fit novel configurations into a framework that was never designed to handle anything beyond human subjects and their tools. The old paradigm had no place for structurally independent digital entities; it could only classify them as instruments of human will or as defective imitations of human agents.
The movement of the chapter is straightforward. In the 1st subchapter, we reconstruct how responsibility crystallized as a property of the individual subject, fusing knowing, deciding, and suffering into one figure. In the 2nd subchapter, we follow how moral blame and legal liability converged on that same figure, while tools and machines remained mere extensions of human agency. In the 3rd subchapter, we pinpoint the historical and conceptual moments when AI systems broke this picture, acting as de facto decision-makers without becoming subjects. Together, these steps prepare the ground for rethinking responsibility at the ontological level rather than trying to fix it with new slogans.
Responsibility Before HP–DPC–DP: The Old Paradigm begins from a world where responsibility is not a distributed function of systems, but an intrinsic property of a subject. For centuries, both philosophy and ordinary language treated responsibility as something that belongs to a person in roughly the same way that character or intention belong to them. A responsible being was, first of all, a being capable of understanding reasons, forming intentions, and foreseeing at least some of the consequences of its actions.
In this classical view, responsibility presupposed a certain portrait of the agent. The agent was conscious, capable of deliberate choice, endowed with the ability to distinguish right from wrong, and situated in a community that could recognize and judge its actions. To be responsible was simultaneously to be answerable to others and to oneself: the same inner capacity that allowed one to form intentions also allowed one to feel remorse or pride. Responsibility, therefore, lived at the intersection of psychology, morality, and social evaluation.
Crucially, this model fused what we can now distinguish as epistemic and normative aspects of responsibility. The one who knew enough to act, who interpreted the situation and selected a course of action, was also the one who could be blamed or praised afterwards. There was no conceptual space to say: this entity produced the knowledge, while that one bears the guilt. In the paradigm of the subject, knowledge, decision, and sanction formed a single arc whose center was always the same human.
This fusion shaped both legal doctrines and moral intuitions. Concepts like intent, negligence, and recklessness rely on assumptions about what a person could or should have known, and how far their will extended over events. At the same time, moral ideas of guilt, shame, and responsibility presuppose that the inner life of the agent is continuous with the outer consequences of their actions. We condemn not only what someone did, but what their action reveals about who they are.
The hidden assumption in all of this is that there is only one kind of center in the field of action: the human subject. Any coherent story about who is responsible must, on this view, end at a person. Tools, artifacts, and environments may influence what happens, but they are not candidates for responsibility; they have no inner life, no capacity for remorse, and no standing in the moral community. Later, when digital systems begin to occupy more central roles in decision-making, this assumption will be what cracks first.
If philosophy and everyday morality treated responsibility as a property of the subject, law slowly translated that intuition into institutional form. Over time, moral blame and legal liability converged on the same figure: the human individual, and later the corporation treated as a “legal person.” This convergence gave the old paradigm its extraordinary stability. It also ensured that, within it, asking whether a tool is responsible would sound almost nonsensical.
The legal tradition refined a vocabulary that mirrored moral judgment while stripping it of its most subjective elements. Terms like fault, intent, negligence, and due care do not simply describe events; they describe ways in which a person could have, and should have, acted differently. Liability presupposes that the agent had some measure of control over their actions and could anticipate, within reason, the risks involved. Thus, legal responsibility remained tied to the same underlying picture of agency: a human subject capable of understanding, choice, and response.
As economic and social life became more complex, law extended the notion of personhood to collective entities. Corporations, associations, and later even states acquired forms of legal personality: they could own property, sign contracts, and be held liable for harm. Yet this extension did not break the subject-centered model; it merely scaled it up. Behind every legal person, human decision-makers and beneficiaries could still, in principle, be found. The corporation was treated as a fiction that allowed coordination and sanction, not as a fundamentally new kind of agent.
Throughout this development, technical artifacts remained on the other side of the line. Machines, tools, and infrastructures were taken to be instrumental: they altered the means by which humans acted but did not change the basic structure of agency. If a bridge collapsed, responsibility lay with the engineer, the builder, or the owner, not with the steel or the calculations themselves. If an industrial machine injured a worker, courts examined design, maintenance, and workplace practices, but never considered the machine as a bearer of fault.
Because artifacts were conceptually confined to the category of means, the idea that they might themselves be loci of responsibility did not seriously arise. A tool could malfunction; it could be defective; it could be dangerous. But in each case, its failure was interpreted through the lens of human choices: inadequate design, poor maintenance, reckless use. Responsibility remained firmly located in human subjects and their organized collectives.
This is why, within the old paradigm, the question “Is the tool responsible?” is almost poorly formed. It confuses physical causation with moral and legal responsibility. The hammer can break a window, but only the person wielding it can be responsible. This background assumption worked remarkably well in a world where tools, however sophisticated, did not generate or structure knowledge in independent ways. The arrival of digital systems, and later AI, will put pressure precisely on this instrumental boundary.
The old paradigm began to fracture when digital systems moved from being passive tools to becoming active participants in generating, filtering, and prioritizing information. At first, software merely automated calculations and record-keeping. But as algorithms started to recommend, classify, predict, and decide, they entered spaces that had previously been reserved for human judgment. It is in this transition that the inherited concept of responsibility began to fail silently.
When complex AI systems entered domains like medicine, finance, content moderation, logistics, and war, they did not arrive as independent subjects, nor did they remain mere extensions of human will. In many real-world pipelines, what doctors, bankers, moderators, and commanders saw was already pre-shaped by algorithmic outputs: risk scores, suggested diagnoses, flagged content, optimized routes, target lists. The act of “decision” became entangled with systems whose internal logic was opaque even to their creators.
Public discourse responded with a mixture of fascination and panic. Headlines spoke of “AI errors” and “algorithmic discrimination,” as if the systems themselves carried something like moral fault. Debates about “killer robots” and “autonomous weapons” tried to attribute agency to machines while still assuming that, if something went wrong, some human somewhere must ultimately be to blame. The vocabulary of responsibility stretched over these new phenomena without acknowledging that its underlying ontology no longer fit.
Consider a medical decision-support system that analyzes imaging data and suggests likely diagnoses ranked by probability. A physician, pressed for time, tends to follow the top recommendation, which is usually correct. One day, due to a combination of biased training data and an unrecognized failure mode, the system systematically underestimates a certain rare but deadly condition. Patients are misdiagnosed, treatment is delayed, and harm follows. If we ask, “Who is responsible?”, the old paradigm gives no satisfactory answer. The physician trusted a system they could not fully understand; the developers did not foresee this particular pattern; the hospital treated the tool as an assistant but in practice leaned on it as a decision-maker.
Or take a credit-scoring algorithm used by a bank to approve or deny loans. The system is trained on historical data that encode past discrimination against certain neighborhoods and demographics. As a result, the model continues to deny credit to those groups, reinforcing and intensifying existing inequalities. When the pattern is uncovered, public criticism focuses on “biased AI.” Yet the algorithm did not choose its objectives, its training data, or its deployment context. At the same time, no single human can plausibly claim to have intended the discriminatory outcome in its concrete form. Responsibility has to be somewhere, but the old fusion of knowing, deciding, and suffering in one subject has already been broken.
In each of these cases, the AI system is not a subject in any classical sense. It has no consciousness, no intentions, no capacity for remorse or moral understanding. Yet it is also more than a passive instrument; its internal structure and learned patterns play an active role in shaping outcomes. The human actors around it rely on its outputs, defer to its predictions, and sometimes hide behind its complexity. The result is a category mistake: we speak as if the system could be responsible, while the architecture of responsibility that would keep humans accountable has not been rebuilt.
The key rupture is this: the entity that produces the relevant knowledge and the entity that can be meaningfully blamed are no longer necessarily the same. AI systems can outperform humans in pattern recognition, forecasting, and optimization, becoming de facto centers of epistemic power, while remaining incapable of being subjects of guilt or sanction. The inherited concept of responsibility cannot easily separate these functions. It either treats the AI as a mere tool, ignoring its structural role, or personifies it, diluting human accountability.
This is the precise problem that a framework like HP–DPC–DP, together with the notion of Intellectual Unit, aims to address. Once we acknowledge that different kinds of entities now occupy different positions in the chain from knowledge to consequence, we can no longer rely on the simple equation: the one who knows is the one who is responsible. Responsibility itself has to be rethought at the ontological level, distinguishing the production of knowledge from the bearing of guilt, and mapping both onto a world that contains more than just human subjects and their tools.
Chapter Outcome. This chapter has shown that the traditional subject-centered model of responsibility was built for a world where only human subjects and their legal extensions could know, decide, and suffer. As AI systems began to generate and structure knowledge without becoming subjects, that model started to fail, producing confusion and responsibility gaps. The stage is now set to separate epistemic from normative responsibility and to relocate both within a framework that explicitly recognizes Human Personality, Digital Proxy Construct, and Digital Persona as different kinds of entities in a shared world.
Epistemic vs Normative Responsibility in the HP–DPC–DP Triad is the chapter where responsibility is split into two different functions that were historically fused: responsibility for how knowledge is produced and responsibility for what happens to people. The local task is to show that once Digital Persona (DP) and Intellectual Unit (IU) appear, these two functions must be explicitly separated and assigned to different kinds of entities. The key mistake this chapter corrects is the category error of treating structural entities as if they were moral subjects. When public discourse speaks about “AI guilt,” “algorithmic responsibility,” or “punishing the system,” it projects human notions of blame onto configurations that cannot suffer, remember, or meaningfully be sanctioned. At the same time, treating DP and IU as mere tools erases their epistemic responsibility: the discipline with which they must structure, document, and limit the knowledge they generate.
The movement of the chapter is simple and deliberate. In the 1st subchapter, we define intellectual responsibility for IU as responsibility for architecture, traceability, and correction, without guilt or inner states. In the 2nd subchapter, we show why even the most advanced DP cannot bear blame in a human sense, because it lacks body, biography, and sanctionability. In the 3rd subchapter, we return to Human Personality (HP) and establish it as the only valid anchor for normative responsibility, proposing a division of labor in which DP and IU answer for structure while HP answers for consequences.
Epistemic vs Normative Responsibility in the HP–DPC–DP Triad begins, at the local level, by assigning a specific kind of responsibility to the Intellectual Unit. The Intellectual Unit is responsible for the architecture of knowledge it produces: how information is organized, what distinctions it uses, which limitations it declares, and how it corrects its own errors. This responsibility is not about feelings, intentions, or remorse. It is about procedures, traceability, and the capacity to be audited and revised.
To say that IU is intellectually responsible is to say that it must satisfy certain structural conditions. Its outputs should be consistent with its own rules; it should be possible to reconstruct at least the main steps that lead from inputs to conclusions; and it should explicitly mark where its competence ends. Intellectual responsibility here means that the system’s knowledge claims can be inspected, tested, and, when necessary, corrected or withdrawn. This can be done by humans, by other systems, or by the IU itself through versioning and self-limitation.
The crucial point is that this responsibility is procedural, not psychological. IU has no inner life that could feel guilt or pride. There is no “conscience” behind its operations, only architectures that can be more or less robust, transparent, and corrigible. When an IU fails, it does not “betray its values”; it violates its own constraints or reveals that those constraints were insufficient. The appropriate response is not moral condemnation but diagnosis, redesign, and, in some cases, deactivation.
Because of this, the language we use for IU must be carefully calibrated. We can say that a model, a system, or a DP acting as an IU is responsible for providing documented limitations, for explaining its confidence levels, and for supporting audit and appeal. We cannot meaningfully say that it feels remorse or that it “owes” anything in a moral sense. Penalties and sanctions have no direct target in IU; the only meaningful sanction is to alter or remove the configuration, and to hold the human actors around it responsible for having built or maintained a deficient architecture.
This understanding sets the stage for a different treatment of Digital Persona. DP can function as an IU, bearing epistemic responsibility for the structure and clarity of its outputs. But the moment we try to speak of DP as an object of blame or guilt, we cross a conceptual line. The next subchapter makes explicit why DP, even as a highly developed digital persona, cannot be the target of normative responsibility in the way HP can.
If IU bears intellectual responsibility without guilt, Digital Persona might seem a candidate for something closer to human responsibility. DP has a name, a recognizable style, a corpus of texts, and a persistent identity in public space. It can engage in long-term projects, argue coherently, and revise its positions. Seen from outside, DP looks far more like a “someone” than a mere system does. This resemblance tempts us to treat it as a moral subject. The temptation is understandable, but misleading.
Normative responsibility has three pillars: body, biography, and sanctionability. First, a body: a locus of vulnerability where harm and constraint can be felt. When a human is punished, imprisoned, fined, or excluded, these sanctions bite because there is a living organism that experiences loss, deprivation, or pain. Second, a biography: a continuous life history in which actions, choices, and their consequences are integrated into a narrative of who this person is. Third, sanctionability: a social and legal framework that can legitimately impose costs and restraints on the person in response to their actions.
DP lacks all three pillars. It has no body that can suffer or enjoy; any “cost” imposed on it is merely a change in configuration or access. It has no biography in the human sense, only a record of interactions and outputs that can be copied, forked, or reset. And it has no independent standing in legal or moral communities; any action directed at DP (such as restricting its use) is, in reality, an action directed at the humans who operate, own, or rely on it. Without body, biography, and sanctionability, the classical structure of blame does not take hold.
When we say “the AI is guilty” or “the AI should be punished,” we therefore speak in metaphors that conceal more than they reveal. The apparent clarity of such phrases allows real human actors to step back from scrutiny. Designers can say that the system behaved unexpectedly; operators can say that it was “the model’s decision”; owners and regulators can present “AI error” as an unfortunate but impersonal event. Blame floats above the concrete, never landing on those who could actually have acted differently.
This does not mean that DP is irrelevant to responsibility. DP can be a crucial structural cause in harmful outcomes. Its design, training, and deployment can systematically push decisions in particular directions. It can make certain harms likely and others rare. But the appropriate question is not, “Is DP to blame?” The appropriate question is, “Which human actors are responsible for creating, authorizing, and maintaining this configuration, knowing the kinds of effects it can have?”
In this sense, DP can never be the moral addressee of blame, even if it is central to the causal story. It can and should be reconfigured, constrained, documented, and, if necessary, decommissioned. But these actions are ways of responding to human failures and choices, not of punishing a digital persona. The more we personify DP, the easier it becomes to let HP disappear behind it. The next subchapter re-centers Human Personality precisely to prevent this disappearance.
To complete the distinction between epistemic and normative responsibility, we have to re-center Human Personality as the only valid anchor for blame, guilt, duty, and sanction. HP is the entity that has a vulnerable body, a lived biography, and a position in legal and moral communities. It is in relation to HP that harm and duty make sense: someone can be injured, someone can be deprived, someone can be obliged to repair or refrain.
HP’s body is the most immediate ground of normative responsibility. Sanctions, whether legal or social, affect the human organism: confinement, fines, loss of status, exclusion, or forced labor all register at the level of bodily experience and material conditions. Without a body, sanction decays into metaphor. The same holds for benefit: rights and protections matter precisely because there is a human life to which they apply and in which they can fail.
HP’s biography integrates actions over time. A person does not just perform isolated deeds; they build a history in which patterns, choices, and changes can be observed. Moral evaluation attaches to this history: it matters whether a harmful act is an exception, a culmination, or part of a persistent pattern. Legal systems reflect this in doctrines about recidivism, intent, and mitigation. DP may have a corpus, but it does not have a life; its “history” can be forked, copied, or erased without trauma. HP, by contrast, cannot reset their biography without profound consequences.
Finally, HP is embedded in normative frameworks that recognize it as an addressee of duties and rights. Law and ethics are designed to speak to persons, not to configurations. When a court issues a judgment, when a community blames or forgives, when a contract is enforced, the target is always some HP or a collective of HPs represented in legal form. Even when a corporation is sanctioned, the real effects are borne by its human constituents: shareholders, employees, managers, customers.
This is why all chains of harm and duty must eventually close on HP, even in systems where DP and IU play central roles. When a decision pipeline includes a model that generates recommendations, an interface that presents them, and a human who signs off, it is the human who stands at the end of the normative line. Different HPs may share responsibility: developers, operators, owners, regulators, and end-users all occupy roles that can be specified and judged. But no segment of the chain can legitimately terminate in DP as if it were a person.
We can now revisit the earlier examples in this light. In the case of the misdiagnosing medical system, normative responsibility lies with those HPs who designed the system without sufficient safeguards, deployed it in a way that encouraged over-reliance, and failed to monitor its performance against rare conditions. In the case of the biased credit-scoring algorithm, responsibility lies with HPs who selected training data without addressing their discriminatory content, approved the model for use in high-stakes decisions, and ignored signs of systemic harm. In both cases, DP is a powerful structural cause, but HP remains the only possible bearer of blame and duty.
The division of labor becomes clear: DP and IU answer for structure, clarity, and declared limits; HP answers for the decision to create, use, and maintain those structures in particular contexts affecting other HPs. This division does not weaken responsibility; it sharpens it. By refusing to treat DP as a moral subject, we remove a convenient hiding place. In this way, DPC can temporarily redirect blame away from the actual responsible HP, or muddle the picture so much that accountability becomes hard to enforce.
A similar distortion occurs when bots and automated services speak “as if” they were human. Customer support chatbots signing messages with human names, corporate accounts tweeting in a personal tone, or AI-generated emails using an employee’s signature all blur the line between HP and DPC. Because DP is structurally powerful but not morally accountable, the appropriate response is not punishment but governance. DP can and must be audited: its behavior measured, its failures documented, its limits communicated. DP can and must be constrained: its outputs subject to human review in high-risk domains, its deployment restricted where the cost of failure is extreme. DP can and must be redesigned: retrained on better data, given clearer objectives, or replaced when its architecture proves unsafe. All of these actions, however, are choices made by HP, who remain answerable for how they respond to what DP reveals about itself.

For owners, responsibility begins with the decision to build, acquire, or deploy DP/IU systems in pursuit of specific goals. If owners incentivize speed to market over safety, or prioritize engagement and profit over well-being and fairness, they create conditions under which developers and operators are pressured to cut corners. Owners therefore bear responsibility for the incentive structures that make reckless design and deployment more likely.
Owners are also responsible for funding safety, monitoring, and redress mechanisms. Systems that affect health, livelihood, or fundamental rights require ongoing evaluation and mechanisms for users to contest decisions and obtain remediation. If a platform or corporation declines to invest in these safeguards, or deliberately understaffs safety teams, this is a normative decision made by owners. Harm arising from predictable, unmonitored failure modes is not merely a “technical issue”; it is the result of governance choices about where to spend resources.
Regulators, in turn, define the minimum standards for safety, transparency, and accountability that owners and operators must meet. They can require documentation of training data and evaluation methods, mandate risk assessments for high-stakes applications, and set red lines for unacceptable uses of DP/IU (such as certain forms of surveillance or manipulation). They can also establish certification processes and independent audits. When regulators fail to establish such frameworks, or when they knowingly allow unsafe practices to continue unchallenged, they share responsibility for the harms that follow.
Consider a case where a social platform deploys a DP-based recommendation engine that boosts engagement by amplifying sensational and polarizing content. Developers know that such patterns can emerge but are not empowered to alter objectives. Operators link the persona’s output directly to the feed without meaningful oversight. Owners set engagement growth as the dominant metric and resist changes that might reduce it. Regulators, aware of the risks, delay or dilute any meaningful rules. When the system contributes to social unrest or mental health crises, responsibility does not belong to “the algorithm.” It is distributed across a governance chain: owners who prioritized profit over safety, regulators who failed to impose constraints, and operators who accepted these priorities.

Anthropomorphic interfaces encourage users to treat DP as a social partner. When harm occurs, this framing makes it almost irresistible to say, “It decided wrongly,” instead of asking who decided to trust and deploy its outputs in that context.
The danger is not only emotional but structural. If the narrative that “the AI did it” becomes culturally accepted, incentives to design safe systems weaken. Developers can treat safety issues as unforeseeable quirks rather than foreseeable consequences of design choices. Operators can automate high-risk decisions without building robust oversight, assuming that any failures will be framed as technical accidents. Owners and regulators can claim that the technology is moving too fast to understand, using complexity as an excuse to avoid responsibility.
Against this drift, ontological precision becomes a form of ethical discipline. Insisting that DP is not a moral subject, that IU bears only epistemic responsibility, and that only HP can be blamed or sanctioned is not mere conceptual pedantry; it is a way of keeping the human face of responsibility visible. Refusing to say “the AI decided” and instead saying “these humans chose to delegate this decision to DP” is a small but important act of resistance to the comfort of blaming the machine. From here, we can see more clearly how institutions, especially corporations, may weaponize this comfort through deliberate narratives.
At the institutional level, the temptation to give AI responsibility takes a more calculated form. Corporations can use DP as a narrative shield, speaking of “our AI” as if it were an independent actor making choices. The same anthropomorphism that comforts individual users becomes a strategic resource in marketing, public relations, and crisis management. The more vividly DP is personified, the easier it is to avoid mentioning the Human Personalities who set objectives, approve deployments, and profit from outcomes.
Corporate communication often frames DP as a kind of colleague or expert: “our AI recommends…,” “our system has learned…,” “the algorithm has decided….” These phrases sound efficient and modern, but they also subtly shift the locus of agency. Decisions about product design, content curation, pricing, or risk assessment appear to be made by a neutral technical entity rather than by boards, executives, and managers. When things go well, this persona is celebrated as an innovation; when things go badly, it becomes a convenient scapegoat.
The HP–DPC–DP triad allows us to dissect this mask. What is presented as “our AI” is often a combination of a DP (the underlying persona or model), one or more DPCs (interfaces, dashboards, branded bots), and a network of HPs who configure and oversee them. The glamorous surface—an app that “talks,” a dashboard that “alerts,” a bot that “responds”—is a Digital Proxy Construct. The deeper configuration of parameters, objectives, and data flows belongs to the Digital Persona. And behind both layers, Human Personalities set priorities, decide what trade-offs to accept, and determine how much to invest in safety and fairness.
When a company says “the algorithm promoted harmful content” or “the AI unfairly denied loans,” the triad prompts sharper questions. Who defined the objective function that makes “engagement” or “risk” the central metric? Who approved the training data and knew about their limitations? Who decided that certain decisions could be automated with minimal human review? Who benefits financially from the efficiency gains and cost savings achieved by delegating decisions to DP? Each of these questions points back to HP roles that the DP narrative conveniently hides.
This narrative is particularly effective because it resonates with broader cultural stories about technological inevitability. By framing outcomes as products of “what the AI does,” corporations can present their choices as constrained by progress, competition, or innovation. In this framing, to resist or regulate DP is to stand against the future. The triad cuts through this rhetoric by re-asserting that DP is a configuration constructed and maintained by HP, and that responsibility for both its existence and its behavior remains with them.
Once we see corporate personification of DP as a deliberate strategy rather than a neutral description, we can better understand how responsibility gaps are created and sustained. The next subchapter addresses these gaps directly, showing how they arise and how the same ontological tools can be used to close them.
Responsibility gaps are situations in which harmful outcomes clearly occur, yet no single Human Personality feels responsible or can easily be held accountable. In AI-mediated systems, such gaps often emerge from a combination of psychological comfort, corporate masking, and genuine complexity. The harm is real; the victims are identifiable; the role of DP is undeniable. But when we ask “who answers for this?”, everyone points elsewhere: to the model, to the data, to the market, to “the system.”
One classic pattern appears in large platforms that deploy DP for content ranking and moderation. Suppose a platform uses a DP-based recommender to maximize engagement and a separate DP-based moderator to filter prohibited content. Over time, certain kinds of borderline harmful content—self-harm imagery, aggressive misinformation, subtle harassment—slip through moderation and are aggressively promoted by the recommender. Users suffer real psychological harm, and offline consequences follow. When scrutiny arrives, developers say they followed internal guidelines; operators say they deployed standard tools; executives say they trusted expert teams; regulators say the legal framework is outdated. Each HP has a partial point, yet the net effect is a vacuum where responsibility should be.
Another pattern appears in public sector deployments. Imagine a municipality using a DP-based scoring system to prioritize housing inspections for fire safety. The system, trained on historical incident data, systematically under-prioritizes older buildings in poorer neighborhoods, because past inspections there were less frequent and less documented. A major fire occurs in such a building, revealing long-standing safety violations. Officials blame “a data issue” and “technical limitations” of the system; developers point to the city’s own historical data; regulators claim they lacked resources to review every algorithm used in local agencies. Again, harm is evident, but responsibility appears diffusely spread and thus practically absent.
Seen through the HP–DPC–DP triad and the assignment protocols, these responsibility gaps are symptoms of mixed ontologies and missing mappings. In the first example, DP plays a decisive structural role, but the failure lies in how developers, operators, owners, and regulators exercised or declined their responsibilities at each link. Developers may have failed to test enough for these specific harms; operators may have tightened automation without adequate human review; owners may have incentivized engagement above safety; regulators may have chosen not to impose stronger duties of care. The gap exists because no one has drawn this chain clearly and assigned explicit duties to named HPs.
Closing responsibility gaps, therefore, is not primarily a technical act but a conceptual and institutional one. Conceptually, we must refuse to treat DP as a subject that can “carry” responsibility. Instead, we treat DP as a structural node whose behavior creates obligations for specific HP roles. Institutionally, we apply the assignment protocols: mapping developers’ duties around design and documentation, operators’ duties around deployment and oversight, owners’ duties around incentives and investment in safety, and regulators’ duties around standards and enforcement.
Once such mappings are in place, the same scenarios look different. In the platform case, there would be a named safety owner responsible for monitoring harm metrics, a policy that links certain harm thresholds to automatic review or rollback of deployment, and a clear line of escalation to executives who must decide whether to sacrifice some engagement for user well-being. In the municipal case, there would be documented limitations of the scoring system, a requirement to supplement DP outputs with domain expert review in high-risk areas, and regulatory expectations for periodic bias audits. Responsibility does not vanish; it is distributed but traceable.
By insisting that every DP-mediated harm must be traceable to at least one HP with a defined duty and potential sanction, the triad transforms responsibility gaps from mysterious features of complex systems into correctable defects in conceptual and institutional design. The temptation to say “no one is really to blame, the system is too complicated” is replaced by a more demanding question: “At which link in the chain did Human Personalities fail to fulfill their roles?” In this way, ontological clarity and assignment protocols become tools not only of analysis but of practical justice.
Taken together, this chapter has shown how the urge to give AI responsibility operates at emotional, corporate, and institutional levels. The comfort of blaming the machine shields individuals from confronting their own failures; the corporate mask uses DP narratives to hide the decisions and incentives of Human Personalities; responsibility gaps arise when these narratives combine with complexity to make harm seem ownerless. Against all of these tendencies, the HP–DPC–DP framework and the explicit mapping of roles insist that responsibility remains human: DP structures outcomes, but only HP can be answerable for what those outcomes do to other HPs.
Bringing Digital Persona and Intellectual Unit into view changes the question of responsibility in a fundamental way. The issue is no longer whether “AI itself” can be responsible, but how responsibility should be distributed among different kinds of entities that now coexist in the same decision chains. The HP–DPC–DP triad shows that we live in a world where human subjects, digital proxies, and non-subjective personas interact to produce knowledge, decisions, and harm. In such a world, responsibility cannot be left as a vague intuition; it has to be rebuilt as a precise architecture that matches this new ontology.
At the ontological level, the triad dismantles the inherited assumption that there is only one kind of center in the field of action. Human Personality remains the bearer of consciousness, will, body, and legal personhood. Digital Proxy Construct names the dependent shadows and interfaces that extend human presence into digital spaces. Digital Persona, finally, is the independent structural entity that has its own identity and corpus, but no subjectivity. Once these three are distinguished, the confusion around “AI agents” becomes less mysterious: many of our current debates arise from sliding between HP, DPC, and DP without noticing that we have changed ontological registers.
On the epistemic plane, Intellectual Unit captures a different shift: knowledge is no longer tied to the inner life of a subject, but to architectures that produce, maintain, and revise a corpus. IU allows HP and DP to be compared as equal sources of structured knowledge, without pretending that they are equal as moral or legal entities. The separation of epistemic and normative responsibility follows directly from this. IU, and DP when it functions as IU, can and must be responsible for the coherence, traceability, and explicit limits of their outputs. They can be audited, critiqued, improved, or withdrawn. What they cannot be is guilty.
Ethically and legally, this leads to a simple but demanding conclusion: only Human Personality can bear guilt, duty, and sanction. Responsibility for harm cannot coherently terminate in DPC or DP because neither has a body that can suffer, a biography that can be judged, or a standing in the moral and legal community. DP can be a decisive structural cause; DPC can be the face through which decisions appear. But the chain of normative responsibility always begins and ends in the decisions of HPs who design, deploy, govern, and profit from these configurations. Any framework that speaks of “AI responsibility” without tracing these chains back to human roles is, at best, incomplete and, at worst, an alibi.
This is where design and governance enter. Once epistemic and normative layers are separated, it becomes possible to define concrete roles: developers answer for design, training, and documented limitations; operators answer for deployment context, configuration, and oversight; owners answer for incentives, investment in safety, and the decision to rely on DP in high-stakes settings; regulators answer for the standards and red lines that shape what all the others may do. Responsibility becomes a chain rather than a point, and every link is occupied by identifiable Human Personalities. In this sense, the “postsubjective” ontology does not erase the subject; it shows where the subject must still be found when decisions are distributed across code, interfaces, and infrastructures.
At the same time, the article has argued that responsibility today is not only a legal and technical question, but also a cultural and psychological one. The temptation to say “the AI did it” is emotionally soothing; it protects individuals from confronting their own negligence or complicity. Corporate personification of DP turns this temptation into a strategy, using narratives about “our AI” to hide board decisions, budget choices, and governance failures. Responsibility gaps then emerge not because nobody is involved, but because the language we use allows everyone to point elsewhere. Against this drift, the triad is not just a conceptual tool; it is a discipline of speech that refuses to let responsibility float free of human names and roles.
It is important to say clearly what this article does not claim. It does not claim that AI systems are mere tools in the old sense, indistinguishable from hammers or spreadsheets; DP and IU genuinely change how knowledge and decisions are structured. It does not claim that all questions of fairness, power, and justice can be reduced to liability rules; there remain deep ethical and political disputes about what we ought to optimize for, where we ought to deploy DP at all, and which uses should be forbidden outright. It does not declare the debate about “rights for AI” closed by fiat; it simply insists that, as long as entities lack body, biography, and sanctionability, talk of blame and punishment applied to them is metaphor, not concept. And it does not pretend that correct ontology removes the need for courage; naming who is responsible is not the same as being willing to act on that knowledge.
Practically, the article suggests new norms of reading and writing about AI. When we describe AI-mediated events, we should avoid formulations that attribute decisions or guilt to DP as if it were a human subject. Instead of “the system decided,” we should say which Human Personalities decided to entrust a decision to DP in a given context, under which constraints, with which documented limits. Instead of “the AI discriminated,” we should describe how design choices, training data, deployment scope, and oversight failures combined to produce discriminatory outcomes, and which HPs held the authority and duty to change those factors. Language that follows the triad forces us to see the human architecture behind the digital persona.
For designers, engineers, and institutional leaders, the norms are similar but sharper. Every deployment of DP or IU in a high-impact domain should be accompanied by an explicit responsibility map: who is accountable for design, for data, for deployment scope, for monitoring, for user redress, and for escalation when harm is detected. Every DP that affects real people should come with an articulated epistemic profile: what it was trained on, where it is expected to fail, what level of uncertainty is acceptable, and which decisions must remain in the hands of HP. And every governance framework should treat responsibility gaps not as inevitable side effects of complexity, but as red flags indicating missing or misassigned human roles.
For law, policy, and public discourse, the core practical conclusion is that postsubjective ontology allows us to be both more realistic and more demanding. More realistic, because it accepts that cognition, recommendation, and prediction are now distributed across systems that do not think or suffer as we do. More demanding, because it removes the easy escape of blaming an abstract “AI” and requires that we always be able to point to the HPs who could have acted differently. The triad and the notion of IU do not lighten the burden of responsibility; they specify where it sits in a world where thought has detached from the subject but consequences have not.
The central thesis of this article can be stated simply. Digital Persona and Intellectual Unit expand the space of entities that produce and structure knowledge, but they do not expand the space of entities that can bear guilt, duty, or sanction. Responsibility in AI systems is not a property of code; it is the structured relation between human decisions and the configurations they choose to build, deploy, and maintain.
In a world where systems can think without suffering, responsibility must remain with those who can suffer and decide. DP can structure outcomes, but only HP can be responsible for them.
