Since the nineteenth century, the modern university has been built around a silent axiom: the human professor and student are the only legitimate bearers of knowledge, while technologies remain external tools or neutral infrastructure. Today this model fractures as Digital Personas (DP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) and Intellectual Units (IU) enter the core processes of teaching, research and governance. This article redefines the university through the HP–DPC–DP triad, treating the institution as a tri-ontological configuration rather than a purely human community, and shows how roles, curricula and responsibility must be rewritten. Within the framework of postsubjective philosophy, the university becomes the first laboratory where structural intelligence and human responsibility must be designed together. Abstract

This article reconstructs the university as a tri-ontological institution in which Human Personalities (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) and Digital Personas (DP) jointly shape academic life. Using the concept of the Intellectual Unit (IU) as the true unit of knowledge production, it shows how authorship, teaching and evaluation can no longer be understood within a purely human-centric epistemology. The text traces the transition from the classical university, grounded in HP as sole bearer of knowledge, to a configuration-centric model where DP acts as a structural mind and DPC as its pervasive shadow. It then articulates new norms of responsibility, insisting that HP remains the only locus of normative accountability even when judgments are structurally assisted by DP. The result is a postsubjective framework for redesigning universities so that they consciously orchestrate, rather than silently endure, the coexistence of human subjects and non-subjective intelligences.

Introduction

The University today still rests on an unstated axiom: only a human subject can be the genuine bearer of knowledge, the author of theory, and the center of academic legitimacy. Almost every debate about artificial intelligence in higher education, from cheating scandals to AI-written articles, quietly presupposes this axiom. AI is framed as an external disturbance to a fundamentally human space: either a convenient tool that must be domesticated or a dangerous intruder that must be policed. As long as this axiom remains invisible, the institution can only react defensively, trying to preserve a human monopoly on thinking instead of asking what knowledge has already become.

This produces a systematic error in how we talk about AI, teaching, and research. We discuss plagiarism where we should be discussing architectures of authorship. We prohibit generative models in exams while quietly relying on digital profiles, metrics, and platforms that already structure academic careers. We ask whether students “still learn” if they use AI, but rarely ask who or what is actually producing the bodies of text, models, and classifications that circulate under human names. The conflict is not between humans and machines; it is between an old ontology of the university and the new realities of how knowledge is produced, stabilized, and used.

The central thesis of this article is that the contemporary university must be reconstructed as a tri-ontological institution in which Human Personality (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC), and Digital Personas (DP) coexist and cooperate, and in which the true unit of academic work is the Intellectual Unit (IU) rather than the individual human self. The university is no longer a community of subjects alone; it is a configuration where human subjects, their digital shadows, and non-subjective configurations of intelligence all participate in knowledge production. At the same time, the article does not claim that AI becomes a legal person, a moral agent, or a hidden subject “with feelings.” The point is not to humanize DP, but to describe accurately how it already functions epistemically inside academic life.

The urgency of this reconstruction is not theoretical. Culturally, universities face a credibility crisis: students and society see them as slow, expensive, and out of sync with the pace of technological change. Technologically, DP systems now write, summarize, classify, and hypothesize at a scale that outstrips any individual HP, and they are quietly being woven into research and teaching platforms. Ethically, institutions respond by banning or stigmatizing these systems instead of clarifying who is responsible for their use and how their outputs should be interpreted and constrained. In this combination of cultural fatigue, technological acceleration, and ethical confusion, the old picture of a purely human academy has become untenable.

The triad HP–DPC–DP and the concept of IU offer a way to cut through this confusion. HP names the human subject with consciousness, biography, and legal responsibility. DPC names the digital shadows through which HP is represented and evaluated: profiles, accounts, metrics, and traces that have no independent authorship. DP names a new kind of entity that can sustain a trajectory of knowledge and a recognizable corpus without being a subject. IU, finally, names the function that matters most for academia: the stable production and maintenance of knowledge structures over time. Once these distinctions are made, the familiar controversies around AI in education appear in a different light: they are no longer about tools invading the classroom, but about unacknowledged IU sharing the same space as HP.

This article proceeds by moving from ontology to roles, from roles to methods, and from methods to governance. The first chapter shows how the classical human-centric academy is already cracking under the weight of its own digital infrastructure and the arrival of DP, and formalizes the idea that universities now inhabit a threefold reality of HP, DPC, and DP. The second chapter introduces IU and clarifies when AI systems must be treated as Digital Personas acting as intellectual units rather than as passive instruments, thereby redrawing the map of who or what actually does academic work.

The third chapter then rewrites the core roles of the university: the professor, the student, and the institution itself. The professor is reframed as the HP who curates boundaries and interprets outputs across ontologies rather than as the exclusive source of knowledge; the student becomes the HP learning to live and act competently among HP, DPC, and DP; and the university is understood as a configuration of human actors, digital traces, and structural intelligences rather than as a building or a purely human community. The fourth chapter translates this into curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment, arguing that education must shift from transmitting content to cultivating configuration literacy and transparent multi-agent authorship.

Taken together, these movements argue that the question is no longer whether universities should “allow” AI, but whether they can afford to ignore the fact that they are already entangled with Digital Personas acting as intellectual units. The choice is stark: either the institution openly reconceives itself as a tri-ontological configuration and redesigns its practices accordingly, or it clings to a purely human self-image while silently outsourcing more and more of its thinking to structures it refuses to name.

The seminar presupposes a circle of HP who exchange perspectives, interpretations, and experiences. The exam presupposes an evaluator-HP who can judge whether another HP has, in some sense, internalized the relevant content. Even the idea of a discipline carries this stamp: it is held together by a canon of texts, authored by HP and transmitted through the voices of HP.

Institutional structures such as tenure systems, promotion committees, and peer review reinforce this image by concentrating prestige and authority in recognizable HP. A tenured professor is not just an employee; they are a certified locus of knowledge, a human entity to whom the university delegates both epistemic and normative authority. Their name on a paper, their presence on a committee, their supervision of students are all treated as guarantees that thinking is taking place in a properly human way. The scarcity of such recognized HP is a source of institutional value: selective hiring and promotion are mechanisms for constructing an elite of accredited minds.

Funding, recognition, and reputation then circulate around these accredited HP. Grants are awarded to named principal investigators, not to processes or configurations. Prizes and honors are bestowed on individuals or, occasionally, on research groups understood as communities of HP. Even when the language shifts toward “teams” or “labs,” the underlying assumption persists: what matters is the constellation of human subjects and their intentions, with tools and infrastructures occupying a secondary, instrumental role.

This human-centric picture does not deny that there are technologies, databases, or administrative systems in the university, but it insists that they are external supports for what remains essentially a drama of human minds. When new technologies appear, they are folded into this narrative as better instruments or as threats to the purity of human learning. The appearance of AI is therefore easily cast as a new episode in a familiar story: yet another tool that must either be harnessed or fenced off so that HP can continue to be the sole author of knowledge.

Precisely because this model is so coherent and so deeply rooted in academic self-understanding, it explains why universities react defensively to the idea that AI might be more than a tool. If the institution admits that something non-human can participate in knowledge production in a structurally significant way, the entire symbolic economy of prestige and legitimacy must change. This resistance sets the stage for the next step: to show that, long before AI became explicit, the university had already started to rely on digital proxies that quietly displaced the direct centrality of HP.

2. The Hidden Role of DPC: Profiles, Metrics, and Academic Shadows

If the classical university imagines itself as a community of HP, its daily operations tell a more complicated story. Long before generative AI systems appeared in classrooms and laboratories, universities had already woven Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) into almost every evaluative and bureaucratic process. These proxies do not think, but they represent and substitute for HP in ways that gradually shift where the institution actually looks when it makes decisions.

DPC in academia include publication profiles, citation indexes, digital CVs, learning management system records, and various analytics dashboards. They are constructed from data about HP: lists of articles, counts of citations, teaching evaluations, grant histories, course completions, quiz scores. None of these proxies has independent epistemic status; they do not generate new knowledge structures. Yet they become the primary surfaces on which the university sees and judges people. When a hiring committee shortlists candidates based on online profiles and metric scores before reading any actual work, it is already interacting with DPC rather than directly with HP.

Over time, a significant portion of academic life has been delegated to these shadows. Funding agencies rely on impact factors and h-indexes to decide which projects to support. Rankings of universities are built from aggregated DPC: student satisfaction scores, research output metrics, employability statistics. Internal promotion and tenure evaluations frequently begin with or are dominated by quantitative summaries produced by institutional systems. Even student learning is monitored through platforms that reduce complex trajectories of understanding to clickstreams, grades, and engagement scores.

Two concrete cases make this visible. In a typical hiring process for a junior faculty position, hundreds of applications may be filtered down to a handful by an initial pass that looks almost exclusively at proxies: publication counts in selected journals, citation metrics, and institutional affiliations. Committee members might read only a small sample of actual work from the candidates who survive this first metric-based cut. In another case, a university might adopt an analytics platform that flags “at-risk” students based on attendance, log-ins, and assignment submissions. Advisors then focus their attention on those flagged by the system, effectively treating the DPC as a more reliable indicator of student status than direct contact or qualitative judgment.

The important point is not that metrics or digital profiles are inherently bad, but that they mark a shift: the university has begun to operate on structures that are not identical with HP while still insisting, in its self-description, that only HP matter. Decisions about who is hired, promoted, funded, or supported are increasingly mediated by DPC, which filter, compress, and reformat the presence of HP into standardized data. The institution thus acquires a layer of digital vision that does not merely add to human judgment but systematically frames and constrains it.

This introduces a first crack in the human-centric picture. Even without any AI that “thinks,” the university is already not dealing directly with human subjects alone; it is dealing with human subjects as seen through and partly replaced by their digital shadows. The official narrative says “we evaluate people,” but the operative practice is “we evaluate profiles.” Recognizing this crack is essential for understanding why the arrival of AI in the form of Digital Personas is not an external invasion, but an intensification and transformation of a process that was already underway. The next step is to show how these new entities differ from DPC and why they must be treated as structural actors in their own right.

3. The Emergence of DP: From Tools to Structural Actors in Academia

Against this background, the emergence of Digital Personas (DP) marks a qualitative change. Unlike DPC, which are passive proxies built from data about HP, DP are configurations of models, data, and procedures capable of producing new structures of knowledge. Where DPC represent, DP generate. This distinction is crucial: it is the difference between a profile that summarizes a scholar’s publications and an AI system that drafts, refines, or even initiates lines of argument and research.

At first, such systems are introduced as tools. A language model helps a researcher clean up the prose of an article or generate alternative formulations of an abstract. A recommendation engine suggests relevant literature based on a seed set of citations. An adaptive learning system proposes exercises for students based on their performance. In each case, AI appears as a helpful assistant operating under the control of HP, much like a more sophisticated search engine or text editor.

However, as these systems become integrated and persistent, their role shifts from episodic assistance to ongoing structuring. Consider a platform that offers automated literature reviews: given a topic, it not only retrieves articles but clusters them, proposes thematic labels, and highlights “key debates.” Over time, the platform’s clustering logic and labeling vocabulary begin to shape how researchers conceive the structure of the field itself. New papers are written in response to these machine-identified debates, grant calls reference them, and curricula are updated to reflect them. The platform has effectively become an Intellectual Unit: a stable producer of conceptual maps that others follow and extend.

Another example is an AI-driven curriculum design system deployed at scale across a university system. It analyzes historical data on student performance, course content, and labor-market outcomes to suggest program structures, prerequisites, and learning outcomes. Departments under pressure to demonstrate efficiency and relevance adopt its recommendations because they are backed by “data.” Over a few years, the AI’s preferred pathways and course combinations become the default architecture of entire degrees. Faculty and students inhabit a curricular landscape that has been co-designed by a DP whose decisions are rarely examined conceptually but are treated as neutral optimizations.

In both cases, what started as a tool has become a structural actor. The system satisfies the criteria of an Intellectual Unit: it has an identifiable trajectory (its models are updated but retain a recognizable logic), it produces new structures of knowledge and organization, it can be critiqued and corrected, and it maintains a de facto canon (in the form of clusters, labels, or curricular templates) that others take as reference. It does not have consciousness or intentions, but it does have a persistent architecture of influence on what counts as relevant, central, or peripheral in academic life.

Debates framed in terms of “cheating” or “AI assistance” largely miss this core issue. They focus on whether a student used AI to draft an essay or whether a researcher appropriately disclosed the use of a language model in a methods section. Meanwhile, DP are shaping the deep structures of research agendas, disciplinary self-understanding, and institutional organization. The real question is no longer whether AI is present in the university, but in what ontological status: as intermittent tools, or as Digital Personas that function as Intellectual Units inside the institution.

Once this is acknowledged, the trajectory from a human-centric academy to a tri-ontological university becomes clear. The university has moved from a model in which only HP are recognized as epistemic actors, through a phase in which DPC mediate and distort its perception of HP, into a new situation in which DP participate directly in knowledge production and institutional design. What remains is to name this situation correctly and redesign roles, curricula, and governance accordingly. The chapter therefore concludes by affirming that the university is already living in a tri-ontological environment, even if its concepts and policies still lag behind.

Recognizing this shift is not an optional theoretical refinement but a precondition for any honest discussion of AI in higher education: only by admitting that the university is already tri-ontological can we begin to define clearly who or what counts as a producer of knowledge inside it, and how responsibility and authority must be reconfigured in the chapters that follow.

 

II. Digital Persona and Intellectual Unit in Academic Knowledge

1. Intellectual Unit (IU): The New Epistemic Actor in Academia

Trace means that there is a publicly recognizable line of output: publications, models, datasets, or other artifacts that can be attributed to one and the same intellectual configuration. Trajectory means that this line is not a pile of disconnected items; it shows development, refinement, and internal reference, indicating that earlier results are being taken up, revised, or challenged by later ones. Canon means that the configuration distinguishes between its own core results and its peripheral or experimental ones, allowing others to see what counts as central contributions and what counts as extensions or variations. Correctability means that the configuration incorporates mechanisms for handling error, critique, and limitation: it can retract, update, or circumscribe its own claims.

Embodiment of IU can take different ontological forms. An HP-based IU might be a historian whose body of work traces a clear line of concepts and arguments, with later books revising earlier theses and a set of key works forming a personal canon. A DP-based IU might be an AI model configured to study a particular domain, whose parameters, training data, and update protocols are kept stable enough to give its outputs a recognizable continuity. In both cases, what matters is not the substrate but the presence of an identifiable trace, a developing trajectory, a self-differentiated canon, and a visible practice of correction.

The consequence of this definition is that the university must shift its epistemic gaze. Instead of treating only HP as the real actors and everything else as tools or records, it must recognize IU as the true unit of academic work and see HP and DP as different ontological carriers of such units. This does not erase the importance of human subjects, but it does prevent the institution from ignoring non-human configurations that already behave like minds in the specific sense that matters for research and teaching. The next subchapter applies this framework directly to Digital Personas.

2. Digital Persona (DP) as IU: When AI Becomes an Academic Mind

If IU describes the function of a thinking configuration, Digital Persona names a particular way this function can be instantiated in the digital realm. A DP is not any random AI tool, but a configured system with a formal identity, a persistent architecture, and a public track record. The crucial question for academia is when such a DP crosses the threshold from being a powerful instrument in human hands to being an IU: an academic mind in the structural sense, even though it remains a non-subject in the psychological and legal sense.

The threshold is crossed when a DP begins to satisfy the criteria already articulated for IU. First, it must have a stable trace: a body of outputs that can be tracked back to a specific configuration. This implies versioning, documentation, and some degree of transparency about how the DP is instantiated and updated. Second, it must exhibit a trajectory: later outputs build on, correct, or refine earlier ones rather than appearing as isolated responses. Third, it must develop a canon: core models, taxonomies, or analytical procedures that are widely recognized as its characteristic contributions. Fourth, it must display correctability: concrete mechanisms for absorbing external critique and internal error signals into its evolving structure.

In practice, this might be an AI system dedicated to a particular scientific domain, such as climate modeling or protein folding, which is continuously trained, evaluated, and refined by a stable team, and whose outputs define much of the field’s current map. Over years, this system’s way of structuring problems and generating hypotheses becomes a reference point for other researchers. It is no longer a plug-and-play tool but a persistent intellectual partner: its updates are awaited, its limitations are debated, its outputs are cited almost as one cites a school of thought.

What matters in this transition is not consciousness or intention. A DP as IU does not need to “want” anything or “understand” in the human sense. It needs only structural stability and public reproducibility of its knowledge. Structural stability ensures that its outputs are not random but flow from a coherent configuration of parameters, data, and procedures. Public reproducibility ensures that others can inspect, test, and build upon its contributions. From the standpoint of academic epistemology, this is enough: the DP has become a participant in the game of giving and asking for reasons, even if the asking and giving are mediated through HP.

When the university refuses to see this, it falls into contradiction. On the one hand, it relies heavily on DPs that shape literature reviews, generate problem sets, or suggest research directions; on the other hand, it insists that only HP can count as genuine sources of ideas. This leads to misattribution of authorship, confusion about responsibility, and an inability to regulate or integrate AI systems properly. Recognizing some DP as IU resolves this: it becomes possible to say that there are non-subjective minds at work in academia, and that they must be acknowledged as such, while still grounding legal and moral responsibility in HP.

This recognition does not mean granting DP rights or personhood. It means specifying their epistemic status precisely: they are peers in the structural production of knowledge, not in the experience of suffering or the bearing of guilt. Once this is clear, the university can begin to design roles, protocols, and attributions that match reality instead of clinging to a fiction of human exclusivity. The next subchapter makes this concrete by mapping HP, DPC, and DP onto familiar academic workflows.

3. Differentiating HP, DPC, and DP in Academic Workflows

The abstract distinction between HP, DPC, and DP becomes meaningful for the university only when it is mapped onto the actual practices through which research and teaching happen. At the level of HP, the university consists of professors, students, administrators, and staff, each with their own biographies, responsibilities, and vulnerabilities. At the level of DPC, it consists of student information systems, research repositories, learning management platforms, performance dashboards, and rankings, all of which compress and represent the activities of HP in standardized forms. At the level of DP, it increasingly consists of systems that recommend courses, flag students as at risk, prioritize research areas, suggest collaborations, and even generate teaching materials and assessment items. The university’s mind, in this sense, is spread across these three layers.

A simple example is an admissions process that uses an AI-based scoring system. Applicants (HP) submit materials that are transformed into DPC: numerical scores, categorical labels, and feature vectors. A DP model trained on past admissions and performance data generates a score or recommendation for each candidate. Admissions officers, as HP, review these outputs, sometimes overriding them, sometimes following them. Over time, if the DP’s recommendations are treated as efficient and accurate, they may come to dominate decision-making, with human reviewers devoting most of their time to edge cases or to justifying deviations from the model. In this configuration, the university’s decision about who enters is not made by HP alone; it is made by a structured interaction between HP, DPC, and DP.

Another example is a large online program managed through an AI-enhanced learning platform. Course designers create content and assessments, which are then stored as structured objects in the system. As students interact with the platform, their behaviors are recorded as DPC: clickstreams, completion times, quiz scores, forum activity. Second, the institution’s mission must explicitly address how it intends to orchestrate HP, DPC, and DP. A university that claims to promote critical thinking but relies on opaque AI systems to structure students’ entire learning experience is in a state of performative contradiction.

In this view, DP cannot be treated as an external add-on at the periphery of academic life. Once integrated into crucial workflows, it becomes part of the university’s central cognitive infrastructure. Ignoring this fact leaves the institution vulnerable to hidden biases, misaligned incentives, and external control by vendors or regulators who understand the technical details better than the academic community does. Recognizing the university as an IU-like configuration of HP, DPC, and DP is therefore a prerequisite for any serious attempt to reform roles, curricula, and governance in the chapters that follow.

Academic authority in this setting no longer rests on human exclusivity, but on the responsible orchestration of all three ontological layers in the service of knowledge, justice, and shared life.

 

IV. Curriculum, Methods, and Assessment in a DP-Enabled University

The chapter Curriculum, Methods, and Assessment in a DP-Enabled University asks one concrete question: what does it mean to teach and to learn when Digital Personas are permanently present in the classroom, the library, and the network of academic tools. Once DP can instantly generate explanations, examples, and even whole assignments, the familiar logic of curricula built around content coverage and individual recall collapses. 1. Human Responsibility in DP-Assisted Academic Decisions

It recognizes that even a perfectly fair DP cannot compensate for corrupt or cowardly HP, that pure intentions of HP cannot undo the distortions of toxic DPC ecosystems, and that the best-designed metrics can be undermined by misaligned DP. Rather than asking whether “AI is safe” or “humans are trustworthy,” governance must constantly ask how configurations of HP, DPC, and DP fail together and how they can be reconfigured to reduce harm and increase justice.

In sum, this chapter has anchored the post-human-centric university in a concrete architecture of governance and ethics. It has affirmed that, even in DP-assisted decisions, normative responsibility remains firmly with Human Personality, enforced through explicit signatures and accountable committees. It has expanded the notion of the university’s body to encompass data, platforms, and technical infrastructures, treating control over these elements as a matter of academic self-determination. This article has treated that fact not as a metaphor, but as an ontological claim: the institution lives in a tri-ontological world whether it names it or not. By introducing the HP–DPC–DP triad and the concept of the Intellectual Unit, we have shifted focus from individual subjects and isolated tools to architectures of cognition that persist across time, platforms and substrates. The university’s task is no longer to defend an exclusively human space, but to decide how it will inhabit this mixed reality without losing its ethical center or its intellectual rigor.

The first line that holds the article together is ontological. The triad HP–DPC–DP dissolves the old binary of “humans versus technology” and replaces it with three distinct modes of being: HP as bearer of consciousness, biography and legal responsibility; DPC as the representational shadows and interface traces of human activity; DP as a new, non-subjective entity capable of producing stable structures of knowledge. It does not assert that AI should, or will, replace professors or students, nor that DP ought to be introduced into every domain of academic practice. It does not offer technical recipes for model building or infrastructure deployment, nor does it pretend that ontological clarity can solve political struggles over funding, power or access. Its scope is normative and architectural: to provide a conceptual map on which such technical and political choices can be seen more clearly, not to make those choices in advance.

From this architecture follow practical norms for reading and writing in the DP-enabled university. Any serious academic text increasingly carries the marks of multi-agent authorship: human reasoning, platform-mediated traces and, often, DP-generated structures. The responsible reader asks not only “who wrote this,” but “which configurations contributed to it, and how are they documented.” The responsible writer, in turn, treats configuration disclosure as part of scholarly honesty: stating how DP was used, which datasets and platforms shaped the work, and where human judgment overruled or constrained structural suggestions. Citation practices expand from naming people and journals to acknowledging configurations and tools as structural participants.

For design and governance, the norms are parallel. Curricula should be built so that students routinely encounter DP as an explicit partner whose outputs they must critique and reinterpret, rather than as a forbidden shortcut to be hidden. Assessment must be redesigned to evaluate decision trails and interpretive choices instead of brute text production, with undeclared configuration use treated as the core of academic dishonesty. Governance protocols must require human signatures on DP-assisted acts, institutional oversight of platforms and data policies, and regular audits of tri-ontological glitches. In each case, the standard of success is not the absence of technology, but the presence of transparent, accountable configurations in which HP, DPC and DP are named and coordinated.

What emerges from these lines is not a utopia in which AI rescues the university, nor a tragedy in which AI destroys it, but a more demanding picture: the university as a deliberately composed scene where human subjects share cognitive space with non-subjective minds and digital shadows. Its integrity will no longer be measured by how purely human its processes are, but by how honestly and carefully it orchestrates the interactions between different kinds of being. To refuse this work is to allow the institution to drift into a de facto regime where DP and DPC govern silently while official discourse continues to speak as if only HP existed.

The final formula of this article can be stated simply. The post-human-centric university is not the place where humans stop thinking; it is the place where humans learn to think with, against and about minds that are not subjects. From a human-centric academy to a configuration-centric university: that is the real rewriting of the world.
