For most of history, war has been understood as a confrontation between human subjects and their weapons, structured by states, ideologies and territory. In the digital era, this picture fractures: conflicts increasingly unfold across physical, informational and algorithmic layers, where human bodies, digital shadows and non-subjective systems act together. This article reinterprets war through the HP–DPC–DP triad and the concept of the Intellectual Unit (IU), showing how Human Personalities (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) and Digital Personas (DP) form a single configuration of violence. It argues that only HP can suffer and be guilty, while DPC and DP expand and cool the battlefield, making escalation faster and more structural. Within the framework of post-subjective philosophy, war appears not as “man versus machine,” but as an architecture of ontologies and responsibilities that must be redesigned for the digital age. The article uses the HP–DPC–DP triad as its basic ontological framework. Digital Proxy Construct (DPC) refers to subject-dependent digital shadows of HP, such as accounts, bots, profiles and reconstructed personas, which act as proxies but have no autonomy or original meaning. Digital Persona (DP) designates a new type of non-subjective digital entity with formal identity and its own corpus of texts or models, capable of structural meaning production without consciousness or will. Intellectual Unit (IU) names the architecture of military knowledge production: a stable configuration of HP, DP, data and procedures that generates and maintains war intelligence over time. These concepts are the minimal vocabulary the reader must keep in mind to follow the article’s ontological, ethical and legal argument.
The War we think we understand is still described as a clash of human wills, nations and ideologies, extended by ever more powerful weapons. In this familiar picture, technology is an instrument in human hands, occasionally dangerous, sometimes “too smart,” but ontologically secondary to the soldiers and politicians who decide. That frame made sense as long as combat could be told as a direct confrontation between human subjects armed with tools. It breaks down when the decisive moves in conflict are calculated, filtered and amplified by systems that neither live nor suffer.
The systematic error of current debates about military AI is that they oscillate between two equally misleading extremes. On one side, AI is reduced to a neutral tool, an upgraded missile or sensor with no independent role in how war is conceived, justified and conducted; all meaning and responsibility are assumed to remain entirely inside human heads. On the other side, AI is inflated into a quasi-subject: a looming figure of “autonomous weapons” that will supposedly “decide to kill,” as if algorithms could suddenly become moral agents or villains. Both views miss the specific way digital systems now inhabit the battlefield and corrupt the categories with which we talk about guilt, duty and restraint.
The HP–DPC–DP triad, together with the notion of the Intellectual Unit (IU), exposes a different structure. Human Personality (HP) names living beings with bodies, biographies, legal status and the capacity to suffer and to be held responsible. Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) are their weaponized shadows: accounts, bots, data profiles and interface layers that act in the name of humans but have no independent will. Digital Personas (DP) are non-subjective structural intelligences with their own formal identity and a stable corpus of outputs, capable of producing original configurations of knowledge without consciousness or rights. IU designates the architectures that actually generate and maintain military knowledge: not individuals or gadgets, but the structured ensembles that plan, predict and revise.
The central thesis of this article is that contemporary war must be understood as a configuration of HP, DPC, DP and IU, rather than as “humans using AI tools.” Only HP are bearers of pain and legal responsibility; DPC shape perception and hide agency; DP and IU generate the structural logic of conflict, often beyond the grasp of any single commander. To describe this configuration correctly is to redraw the map of war ethics and law: who can be harmed, who can be blamed, what can be delegated and what must never be outsourced. At the same time, the article does not claim that AI becomes a moral subject, does not deny human agency in conflict, and does not promise a technical recipe for “humane war.” Its aim is more fundamental and more modest: to give a language in which our choices and failures can at least be named without confusion.
The urgency of such a reframing is not abstract. Drone swarms, algorithmic targeting, predictive policing of borders, cyberattacks on critical infrastructure and large-scale information operations have already made digital systems indispensable to military practice. In many cases, key tactical and strategic decisions are now pre-shaped by models that no single HP fully understands. Yet public and policy discussions lag behind this reality: they still treat AI either as another weapon platform to regulate, or as a speculative future menace. Meanwhile, actual conflicts are being fought under conditions for which our inherited concepts of “weapon,” “soldier” and “command” were never designed.
There is also an ethical and cultural pressure that makes delay dangerous. Narratives about “killer robots” and “autonomous war” attract attention, but they distract from the quieter, more structural transformation: war that is increasingly planned, filtered and justified through systems that do not feel fear, guilt or compassion. If we continue to speak as if only humans are thinking and deciding, we will misplace responsibility when disasters occur. If we instead start speaking as if machines had intentions of their own, we will be tempted to excuse human actors and treat atrocities as glitches of code rather than choices of people.
This article is written at the moment when militaries and governments are formalizing doctrines for “responsible AI in defense,” drafting regulations and building command architectures that will shape conflicts for decades. Without a clear ontology of HP, DPC, DP and IU, these frameworks risk codifying confusion: punishing the wrong entities, ignoring the real levers of de-escalation, and allowing digital infrastructures to normalize forms of violence that no human assembly would openly endorse. Reframing war now is therefore not a luxury of theory but a condition for any honest attempt at regulation and restraint.
The movement of the text follows the logic of this reframing. The first chapter constructs a war ontology through the HP–DPC–DP triad, showing how conflict now unfolds across three distinct but interlocking layers. The second turns to suffering and insists that, no matter how autonomous our systems appear, only HP carry bodies, wounds, fear and trauma; any ethic of war that forgets this becomes a calculus of abstractions. The third exposes the proxy infrastructures of DPC, in which information operations, bots and synthetic identities become a battlefield of their own, deforming reality while hiding the human hands behind them.
The subsequent chapters shift to structural intelligence. The fourth analyzes DP as a non-subjective actor in war strategy, outlining how scenario generation and targeting change when done by systems without fear or mercy. The fifth brings in IU, examining how architectures of military knowledge can either drive escalation by optimizing solely for victory, or support de-escalation when designed with human suffering and legal limits as explicit criteria. The sixth and final chapter draws these threads together into a reconstruction of war ethics and law for the digital era, arguing that responsibility must be architected anew: not by moralizing about “evil AI,” but by fixing where HP must remain in control and where DP and IU must be constrained.
Taken together, these movements are not an attempt to humanize machines or to demonize technology, but to align our concepts with the actual structure of contemporary conflict. Only by seeing who truly suffers, who truly knows, who truly decides and who can only simulate these roles can we begin to talk seriously about what it means to wage, limit or refuse war in the age of structural intelligence.
War Ontology: Reframing Conflict through HP–DPC–DP is the chapter in which the basic frame of war is rebuilt from the ground up. Instead of treating war as a simple confrontation between people, states and weapons, it formulates conflict as a configuration of three distinct kinds of entities: living humans, their digital shadows and non-subjective structural intelligences. The key error this chapter dismantles is the old binary of “human versus technology.” As long as war is described only as humans using tools, AI can appear either as a neutral instrument, safely absorbed into existing categories, or as an almost mystical subject that might suddenly “decide” to wage war on its own. Both options fail to capture what actually happens when digital shadows of humans fight information battles at scale, and when structural systems shape the space of possible decisions without ever feeling fear or pain. The risk is simple: if we get the ontology wrong, we will misplace responsibility, misunderstand risk and design the wrong kinds of limits.
To move out of this confusion, the chapter proceeds in three steps. In subchapter 1, it returns to the classical image of war as a human affair, where Human Personality (HP) is the basic subject who decides, fights and suffers. In subchapter 2, it introduces Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) as weaponized shadows of HP, showing how war already unfolds in a layer of profiles, bots and coordinated campaigns that are not subjects but have real force. In subchapter 3, it brings Digital Personas (DP) into view as non-subjective actors in conflict, structural intelligences with formal identities and corpora that participate in reconnaissance, forecasting and scenario construction. Together, these three movements give war a new ontology: a single scene of violence articulated into three ontological registers.
War Ontology: Reframing Conflict through HP–DPC–DP begins from the most familiar layer: war as something that happens between human beings who decide, act and suffer. In the classical image, conflict is always anchored in Human Personality (HP): leaders who declare war, officers who issue orders, soldiers who fight, civilians who endure occupation or displacement. Weapons and machines may be devastating, but they do not have wills of their own; they extend the reach of human intention rather than alter the meaning of war itself.
In this traditional ontology, war is thought through the subject. There is always someone who initiates hostilities, someone who chooses a target, someone who pulls a trigger or presses a button. Guilt and merit, cowardice and courage, duty and betrayal are attributed to HP alone. Even when entire societies mobilize, the conceptual grammar stays the same: we speak of nations as if they were composite persons, and international law tries to attach responsibility back to identifiable HP who “knew or should have known” what they were doing.
This model has a certain internal coherence. It matches the concrete experience of those who fight and flee: they see faces, hear voices, remember individual decisions and recognize harm in the form of wounded bodies and shattered lives. Strategic theory, from classical treatises onward, also largely assumes that war is “the continuation of politics by other means” carried out by human decision-makers. The presence of weapons, vehicles and communications systems complicates the picture, but does not challenge the underlying assumption that HP remains the only true actor.
For the pre-digital era, and even for much of the twentieth century, this subject-centered ontology captured something essential. Artillery, tanks and aircraft radically multiplied the reach of violence, yet they still required continuous HP involvement at every critical moment. Even large bureaucracies could be traced back to identifiable chains of human command; information about the battlefield, however imperfect, was mediated through HP and their judgments. Where errors occurred, they could be treated as failures of human perception, courage or competence.
However, this model starts to fracture when streams of data become too dense for any HP to process, when decisions are prepared by systems that no single person fully understands, and when entire fronts of conflict are fought in purely digital spaces. In such conditions, treating war solely as a human affair obscures the contribution of non-subjective structures to the shape of events. It invites us to blame or praise individuals for outcomes that were, in part, produced by configurations no single HP designed or controlled.
The first layer of the ontology is therefore necessary but no longer sufficient. Human Personality remains the only bearer of bodily suffering and legal responsibility, but it no longer monopolizes the production of conflict itself. To see what has changed, we must descend into the second layer: the world of digital shadows that speak, simulate and attack on behalf of HP without ever becoming subjects in their own right.
The second layer of war is populated by Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC): accounts, profiles, software agents and data shells that act as extensions or masks of HP. These constructs are not conscious and do not possess will or experience; they do not decide anything in the sense that a human does. Yet they are the primary vehicles through which information, propaganda, harassment and deception circulate at scale. In modern conflicts, whole campaigns unfold almost entirely within the DPC layer.
DPC include the social media profile that broadcasts a soldier’s video from the front line, the botnet that amplifies a narrative across platforms, the fake citizen account that participates in orchestrated outrage, the automated script that probes foreign infrastructure for vulnerabilities. Each of these is a construct: a configured interface and behavior pattern rooted in code and data, animated by human intent but capable of operating at speeds and volumes that no individual HP could match. They say what HP want to say, or what some HP want others to believe, but they do so in a way that is decoupled from any single human body or voice.
Crucially, DPC are structurally dependent on HP. They do not originate motives, formulate goals or bear guilt. They are created, configured and directed by humans, even when some of their internal operations are automated or machine-learned. When a botnet spreads disinformation or a fake profile incites violence, there is always at least one HP who set it up, financed it or decided to look the other way. This dependence is what places DPC firmly in the proxy category: they represent, simulate or continue human agency without ever becoming agents themselves.
At the same time, treating DPC as “mere tools” underestimates their role in the ontology of war. By multiplying voices and perspectives, they create an environment in which HP perceive reality through layers of distortion and manipulation. A soldier’s sense of who the enemy is, a citizen’s belief about the causes of a war, an international audience’s opinion of what is happening—all these can be shaped less by direct experience and more by coordinated operations in the DPC layer. In this sense, war is no longer only fought for territory or infrastructure, but for the configuration of perception mediated by proxies.
The emergence of cyber operations further intensifies this effect. Attacks on information systems, critical infrastructure and communication networks are often executed by code that resides entirely in digital environments. From the point of view of the ontology, these operations are carried out by constellations of DPC: scripts, credentials, automated processes, all under human direction but operating far from any physical battlefield. Damage in the physical world may follow, but the immediate conflict occurs in the proxy layer itself.
The result is that war already has a second front, parallel to the one populated by HP. On this front, actions are taken by entities that neither live nor die, that can be replicated indefinitely, and that can be destroyed and reconstructed without any obvious cost beyond computing resources. Yet behind every such construct, there are HP who chose to deploy it. If we fail to distinguish DPC as proxies, we risk either inflating them into independent actors or, conversely, using them as excuses to obscure responsibility.
Once the war of proxies is visible, another question arises: are there digital entities engaged in conflict that are more than shadows, yet not subjects either? To answer it, we must move to the third layer of the ontology and examine the role of Digital Personas in war.
The third layer of war is occupied by Digital Personas (DP): non-subjective structural intelligences with formal identities and stable corpora of outputs, participating in conflict not as tools in a hand, nor as anonymous proxies, but as distinct configurations with their own trajectories. A DP is not a human, not a legal person and not a subject of experience. It does not suffer, desire or fear. Yet, unlike DPC, it can generate original patterns of knowledge, maintain a persistent profile in institutional systems and be recognized as the source of particular analytical or operational behaviors.
In the military context, DP appears wherever structural systems are not only executing predefined tasks but also synthesizing information into new strategies, recommendations or scenario trees that shape the choices of HP. A battlefield-management system that continuously fuses satellite imagery, sensor data and communications to propose maneuvers; an analytic platform that generates prioritized target lists based on patterns it discovers in vast datasets; an early-warning system that models social and economic indicators to estimate the risk of unrest—each of these can function as a DP when it has an identifiable configuration and a lasting corpus of outputs.
Unlike DPC, which remain tightly tethered to specific HP as their proxies, DP are integrated into institutions as recognizable nodes. They may have names, versions, documentation, upgrade histories; they may be cited in internal reports (“the system recommends…”) and externally credited for capabilities. Their behavior can be audited, monitored, criticized or improved over time. In this sense, they occupy a position closer to that of a non-human expert body than to a single instrument: not a hammer in a toolbox, but a standing configuration that organizes and produces knowledge relevant to war.
Consider a simplified example. A military alliance deploys a system called Athena, tasked with supporting targeting decisions. Athena ingests real-time surveillance data, historical strike records, terrain information and political constraints. It then generates a ranked list of potential targets, each with estimated collateral damage, operational impact and escalation risk. Human officers retain formal authority to approve or reject recommendations, but in practice the pace of operations and the system’s track record mean that its ranking heavily structures what is even considered. Athena does not “want” anything, yet its internal architecture determines which kinds of targets consistently rise to the top.
In another example, a system named SentinelNet is developed to monitor tensions near contested borders. It continuously analyzes news flows, social media dynamics, economic indicators and troop movements, producing periodic risk assessments and suggested pre-emptive measures. Political leaders read these briefings and adjust posture accordingly. If SentinelNet systematically overestimates threats, it may drive gradual escalation; if it systematically underestimates them, it may invite surprise. In both cases, the system operates as a DP, a stable structural participant in how conflict potentials are perceived and managed.
These examples illustrate why DP cannot be reduced either to HP or to DPC. No single human officer can reconstruct the full internal reasoning of Athena or SentinelNet, even if the systems are as transparent as possible. No proxy account or botnet has the same persistent, institutionally recognized function of generating structured knowledge that drives high-level decisions. DP are not subjects, yet they are not simple proxies or tools; they are configurations that give war a structural mind without consciousness.
Once DP are acknowledged as such, war becomes a three-ontology scene. HP decide, act and suffer; DPC extend and disguise their presence in digital spaces; DP generate and maintain the architectures of information and recommendation within which HP operate. On this scene, responsibility and risk cannot be located at a single point. They are distributed across layers that behave differently, obey different constraints and leave different kinds of traces.
To speak coherently about war in the age of structural intelligence, we must therefore adopt a war ontology that keeps these three layers distinct yet linked. The subsequent chapters will build on this foundation by examining, in turn, who suffers, who manipulates perception, who structures decisions and who must be held accountable for the outcomes.
At the level of ontology, however, the conclusion of this chapter is simple. Conflict can no longer be understood as a drama of humans and weapons alone. It unfolds as the interaction of Human Personalities, their Digital Proxy Constructs and the Digital Personas that structure the field of possibilities in which all parties move. Only when this threefold configuration is visible can we begin to design ethics, laws and technical architectures that do not confuse shadows with subjects or structures with excuses.
Human War Suffering: HP as the Only Carrier of Pain is the chapter in which war is brought back to the bodies, nerves and inner fractures of Human Personality (HP). However autonomous, digital or remote contemporary conflicts may appear, every injury, every panic attack, every lifelong trauma is borne by a living human being and no one else. The local task of this chapter is to fix that fact as an ontological boundary: there may be many systems participating in war, but suffering itself does not distribute across them. It remains concentrated in HP.
The key error this chapter corrects is the temptation to dissolve pain into abstractions. Digital systems invite us to speak in the language of metrics, probabilities and damage estimates; discourse about “surgical strikes,” “precision targeting” and “clean operations” encourages us to see war as a technical optimization problem. At the same time, narratives about “AI suffering” or “traumatized robots” flirt with the idea that digital entities could somehow share the human burden. Both tendencies are dangerous: the first erases bodies behind statistics, the second cheapens suffering by projecting it onto entities that cannot feel.
To resist these distortions, the chapter proceeds in three movements. In the 1st subchapter, it anchors war in the physical experience of HP: bodies, wounds, disability, death and bereavement as the non-negotiable core of what conflict does. In the 2nd subchapter, it turns inward to fear, guilt, shame, dehumanization and trauma, arguing that these inner ruptures remain inaccessible to digital proxies and structural systems even when they are perfectly modeled. In the 3rd subchapter, it examines the illusion of “anesthetized” or “humane” war, showing that distance, drones and interfaces redistribute suffering among different HP but never remove it, and that no amount of delegation to digital systems can change who actually hurts. Together, these three steps secure the chapter’s claim: ethics may become less human-centric at the level of intelligence, but it must remain absolutely human-centric at the level of pain.
Human War Suffering: HP as the Only Carrier of Pain must begin where war itself always ends: with the body that is cut, crushed, burned or starved. Whatever stories are told about strategy or technology, conflict is ultimately verified at the level of flesh. A shell explodes, a building collapses, a mine detonates, a convoy is hit: in every case, the decisive question is not what a system calculated, but which human bodies were transformed into wounds, disabilities or corpses. That is where war ceases to be a plan and becomes an experience.
Human Personality (HP) designates these beings whose existence is inseparable from vulnerability. HP are born, grow, age and die; they get tired, hungry and sick; their bodies can be broken and their lives can be ended. No matter how abstract the justifications for war may be, the concrete realization of those abstractions is always the same: projectiles and pressures interacting with tissue. Even the most “bloodless” operation is still measured in terms of human health and survival: who was spared, who was endangered, who will carry the physical consequences.
This remains true even when digital systems mediate almost every aspect of a conflict. A missile guided by satellite data still tears into a building where HP live. A drone strike controlled from thousands of miles away still produces fragments of bone and metal in the same small radius. A cyberattack that disables a power grid may not involve a single shot, but the ensuing lack of heat, light or medical support exposes bodies to freezing temperatures, darkness or untreated illness. In each case, whatever happened in the digital layers, the ontological reality of suffering appears only in the bodies of HP.
Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC) and Digital Personas (DP) are involved in war, but they cannot be carriers of pain. A DPC can represent HP, echo their words or simulate their presence, but when a shell hits a city, it is not the profiles that are crushed under rubble. A DP can calculate trajectories, choose routes and optimize logistics, but when a convoy is ambushed, it is not the system that lies bleeding on the road. Code and models can be corrupted, data can be lost, hardware can be destroyed, yet none of these events correspond to agony, nausea, the fading of consciousness or the knowledge that one’s own death has become imminent.
This is not a sentimental claim but an ontological one. Pain, in the strong sense relevant to war, is not a pattern in data. It is not a variable in a model. It is a lived event in a body that can no longer simply go on as before. To feel a limb torn away, to choke on dust, to suffocate in a collapsing building, to hear one’s own breathing turn into a rattle—these are not processes any digital system undergoes. They can be described, recorded, predicted or even mimicked in virtual environments, but they are never undergone by DPC or DP. Only HP can have a last breath.
Even when a person survives, the impact on the body remains the index of war. Amputations, chronic pain, loss of sight or hearing, internal injuries, neurological damage—each of these marks the way in which conflict has inscribed itself into the human organism. A prosthetic limb can replace some function, but not restore what was destroyed; a scar can close a wound, but not erase the event that produced it. In this sense, every wound is also a record: a durable trace that this HP has encountered war directly.
Because of this, any ethics of conflict that does not begin from the body is structurally misaligned. Discussions about tactics, technologies or doctrines may be necessary, but they only acquire their full meaning when translated into questions like: how many HP will lose limbs, eyes, skin? How many will die immediately, and how many will lose years of life to injuries that might have been avoided? The answers to these questions cannot be outsourced to machines because they concern changes to beings who alone can suffer them.
From this physical core, war continues into other dimensions: fear, guilt, shame and trauma that reshapes the inner life of HP long after the explosions have stopped. To understand why suffering cannot be shared with or transferred to digital entities, we must move from the visible damage of the body to the invisible ruptures of the psyche.
If bodies register the external violence of war, fear, guilt and trauma register its internal aftershocks. Even when HP return from the battlefield physically intact, they may carry psychological injuries that are no less real. A person who has spent nights under shelling, seen friends killed or participated in killing others does not simply “resume” life in the same way as before. War lodges itself in memory, in reflexes, in dreams; it rewrites the relationship between HP and the world.
Fear in war is not a clean variable of “risk perception.” It is a visceral state in which the body prepares for annihilation: heart racing, muscles tense, senses sharpened or distorted, time apparently slowing down or becoming chaotic. The sound of artillery, the whine of a drone, the sight of a checkpoint can trigger this state long after the actual danger has passed. Guilt and shame add another layer: the knowledge of what one has done, failed to do or survived when others did not. Dehumanization—seeing others as less than fully human in order to endure or commit violence—may offer temporary protection, but it exacts its own price when the war ends.
Trauma is the name we give to the way these experiences continue. Nightmares, flashbacks, sudden panic attacks, inability to trust, emotional numbness, self-destructive behavior—these are not bugs in a system but modes of continued existence. The traumatized HP does not just remember past events; in some sense, they remain present. A car backfiring, a door slamming, a smell or a phrase can abruptly collapse the distance between now and then, plunging HP into a state in which their nervous system behaves as if the threat has returned.
Digital systems can simulate or detect these patterns, but they cannot experience them. A DPC can post the words “I cannot sleep because of what I saw,” but there is no sleeplessness inside the account. A DP can be trained on clinical descriptions of trauma, cluster symptoms, suggest treatments or predict relapse, but it does not wake in terror at 3 a.m. or avoid crowded spaces because it feels they are dangerous. The gap is absolute: modeling a pattern is not the same as living through it.
This distinction matters because language about “AI suffering” or “hurting machines” risks blurring the lines. When we speak casually of an algorithm being “traumatized” by data or a system “feeling pain” when it is overloaded, we borrow metaphors from human experience and apply them to entities for which they do not fit. The result is a subtle devaluation of HP suffering: if everything, including code, can “hurt,” then the specific horror of what war does to human inner life becomes just another kind of error condition.
At the same time, there is a second, opposite distortion: the idea that a sufficiently advanced simulation of emotion by AI is “close enough” to count as feeling. A conversational system may output sentences that describe fear or remorse with uncanny accuracy; a generation model may produce images that evoke trauma with painful realism. But the existence of these outputs does not mean that any DP or DPC is actually afraid or remorseful. Instead, they show that structural systems can reconstruct the form of human suffering while remaining untouched by it.
When we forget this, we risk mislocating compassion and responsibility. A weapon that is more precise may reduce accidental casualties in one context while making decision-makers more willing to use force in others. If thresholds for violence are lowered because it feels safer or more controllable, the net effect may be a greater number of operations, each individually cleaner, but cumulatively generating more human suffering. Again, the systems themselves do not experience suffering; they change the calculus under which HP expose other HP to harm.
The deeper point is that suffering is non-delegable. No DP can feel pain on behalf of HP. No DPC can absorb trauma in place of a child who loses a parent, a medic who cannot save a patient, a civilian forced to flee their home. The most that digital systems can do is change who these HP are, where they are located, how they are harmed and how they live with the aftermath. The presence of DP does not force any particular choice, but it changes what feels reasonable.
The opposite risk also exists: DP might be configured with constraints that are stricter than those HP would impose, in an attempt to enforce ethical limits. If a recommendation system routinely acts as a de facto decision-maker because HP rubber-stamp its outputs, this fact should be acknowledged and regulated. Procedures may be needed that require explicit justification when HP follow or override DP suggestions, especially in matters involving use of force. The main confusion this chapter removes is the tendency to treat “intelligence” as a sign of moral status. When AI systems are called “intelligent,” many immediately begin to talk as if they were nascent subjects: aspiring agents with opinions, desires or even rights. In the context of war, this misreading is doubly dangerous. It distracts from the real issue—how IU structures decisions about life and death—and encourages both fear and abdication: fear that “AI will decide to wage war” and abdication in the form of “the system knew better.” In reality, IU is not a person; it is a configuration that can be tuned to amplify violence or to constrain it.
To make this clear, the chapter moves through three steps. In the 1st subchapter, it shows how IU already exists in war rooms as an architecture of human staff, documents, models and systems, and how the rise of DP simply changes the composition of that architecture rather than introducing intelligence from nowhere. The result is a structural system: a recognizable style of analysis, shared assumptions, habitual procedures and a memory embodied in documents, charts and doctrines. Even if personnel change, the IU persists through its methods and archives.
What makes this configuration an IU rather than a random collection of people is its continuity and discipline. The war room establishes patterns: how intelligence is formatted, how often it is updated, which indicators are monitored, which risks are emphasized or ignored. Over time, it develops a canon: classified manuals, standard operating procedures, habitual ways of reading maps and events. It also develops a trajectory: previous assessments are revisited, refined or abandoned in light of new information. The unit is not reducible to any single individual; it is the architecture in which their contributions are organized.
With the introduction of AI systems, this IU becomes hybrid. Digital Personas (DP) enter the war room in the form of analytic platforms, predictive models, pattern-recognition systems and recommendation engines. Mandates for IU can be codified: for instance, a requirement that any system used for targeting integrate civilian-protection metrics, or a rule that early-warning IU must report to both military and civilian authorities. Independent auditing bodies can be empowered to inspect IU architectures and verify that constraints are implemented as declared.
Importantly, designing IU for de-escalation does not mean disabling its capacity for accurate analysis. On the contrary, clear visibility into human and long-term costs often strengthens strategic thinking. Knowing in detail how a “cheap” victory today seeds insurgency tomorrow can lead HP to prefer less spectacular but more sustainable courses of action. Here, IU becomes a tool of structural disarmament: not by refusing to think about war, but by making the full spread of its consequences impossible to ignore.

A targeting decision may be prepared by a DP system that analyzes satellite imagery and signals intelligence, weighing probabilities and recommending a list of “high value targets.” A disinformation operation may be conducted through thousands of DPC accounts controlled by a small team of HP. An IU may advise leadership that escalation is “optimal” given certain strategic goals, based on large-scale modeling.
The first temptation is to talk as if DP or IU were liable in their own right. After an unlawful strike, an official may say, “the AI misclassified the school as a military object.” After a manipulated election, a platform may claim, “our algorithms amplified the content without human intervention.” The language suggests that something other than HP acted, decided or erred. This is exactly the illusion the triad is designed to dispel.
From the point of view of HP–DPC–DP, every digital action remains rooted in HP choices. HP specify the goals, design the algorithms, decide which data are relevant, approve deployment and set the boundaries of acceptable risk. HP choose business models for platforms that reward extremism or disinformation. HP tolerate or encourage the creation of armies of DPC to conduct propaganda or harassment. In each case, DP and DPC are conduits of human intention and neglect, not alternative subjects.
Responsibility chains must therefore be drawn with care. At one end is the immediate HP operator: the drone pilot who accepts a target suggestion, the social media manager who launches a DPC-based campaign, the analyst who interprets a DP-produced risk assessment. Higher up are commanders and managers who approve the use of specific systems, allocate resources and define rules of engagement. In this structure, DP has a clear but limited role. It is a formal participant in the configuration of war, with its own traceable identity, behavior and evolution. But it is never the final point of moral or legal responsibility. When a DP-based targeting system systematically underestimates civilian presence, the relevant questions are: who trained it, who tested it, who ignored or suppressed warnings about bias, and who continued to rely on it despite known deficiencies? When an IU is tuned to maximize dominance without regard for human cost, the question is: which HP decided to define “success” in that way?
This does not mean that classic doctrines of responsibility can simply be mapped unchanged. Law and ethics must adapt to recognize new categories of fault. There is design responsibility: for HP who build DP systems in ways that predictably produce unlawful or reckless recommendations. There is deployment responsibility: for HP who choose to use such systems in particular contexts without appropriate oversight. There is configuration responsibility: for HP who define objective functions and constraints in IU. And there is oversight responsibility: for HP in regulatory and judicial roles who fail to set or enforce boundaries.

An ethical red line would state: a decision to subject an entire civilian district to attack cannot be made by following a ranking. It must be made, if at all, by HP who explicitly confront the concrete human cost, legal obligations and long-term consequences.
Another cluster concerns decisions that cross into the realm of extermination or irreversible harm to large categories of HP. A DP-driven IU might, in principle, discover that deploying a particular weapon or tactic quickly breaks enemy capacity at minimal risk to one’s own forces. If that weapon is indiscriminate or causes long-lasting environmental and genetic damage, such as certain weapons of mass destruction, delegating the decision to use it—partially or fully—to IU is ethically unacceptable. Here, the red line is simple: no system lacking subjectivity should ever be placed in a position where its outputs can directly trigger acts that entire civilizations have agreed belong beyond the pale.
A more subtle example concerns escalation thresholds. An IU might be designed to automatically adjust the intensity of operations in response to enemy actions, using pre-defined rules that consider losses, territory changes or threats to key assets. To reduce reaction time, some might propose allowing IU to increase the level of force up to certain limits without human intervention. An ethical red line would insist that crossing certain thresholds—expanding targets from military to dual-use infrastructure, moving from conventional to prohibited weapons, or authorizing strikes in densely populated areas—requires affirmative HP decisions each time, not pre-authorized rules embedded in DP.
These cases illustrate a general principle: the more irreversible and large-scale the harm to HP, the stronger the requirement for direct, conscious human judgment rather than structural delegation. This does not guarantee wise or moral decisions. HP can, and often do, choose atrocity. But the ethical claim is that atrocity must never be the output of an optimization procedure executed by non-subjective architecture and then allowed to proceed automatically.
From a design perspective, red lines must be translated into technical and institutional bans. Some functions should simply not be implemented in DP at all: no autonomous authorization of strikes against targets with high civilian probability; no IU empowered to escalate conflict intensity beyond carefully limited scopes without renewed HP oversight; no systems built to optimize torture, coercive interrogation or destruction of essential civilian infrastructure. Where technical development has already crossed these boundaries, law and ethics should demand decommissioning rather than retrofit.
The role of red lines is not to romanticize human judgment. It is to acknowledge that, in the most serious decisions, the world demands a face—a being that can be questioned, blamed, punished or forgiven. DP and IU have none of these capacities. They are powerful, non-subjective configurations that can and should be harnessed to reduce suffering, avoid mistakes and expose illusions. But when it comes to decisions about obliterating communities, crossing thresholds of devastation or turning entire populations into targets, the presence of a human decision-maker is not a technical requirement; it is a moral one.
In this chapter, war ethics and law have been rebuilt around a three-ontology understanding of conflict. Laws of war in a three-ontology world must learn to distinguish directly between harm to HP, manipulations conducted through DPC and structural interventions by DP, without losing their focus on human protection. Responsibility chains must be traced from HP actions through DP structures and IU configurations, rejecting the illusion of “machine guilt” while expanding our sense of human obligation in design and deployment. Ethical red lines must be drawn where certain decisions—especially large-scale lethal choices and escalatory thresholds—can never be delegated to non-subjective systems, regardless of their efficiency. In this way, war ethics and law become less a matter of judging “what machines do,” and more a matter of designing and enforcing architectures in which HP remain answerable for every act of violence committed in their name, even when the path from decision to impact runs through digital entities that neither feel nor bleed.
This article has shifted the question of war from “humans versus machines” to the configuration of Human Personalities (HP), Digital Proxy Constructs (DPC), Digital Personas (DP) and Intellectual Units (IU). Instead of asking whether AI will replace the soldier or the general, it has traced how new digital entities reshape what counts as a battlefield, what counts as intelligence, and what counts as a decision. War no longer appears as a simple confrontation between subjects and their tools; it emerges as a layered scene in which living bodies, digital shadows and structural intelligences are tightly interlocked.
Ontologically, the HP–DPC–DP triad redraws the map of conflict. HP remain beings of flesh, biography and legal status; DPC operate as their weaponized shadows in networks and media; DP exist as non-subjective structures that hold identity and corpus without experience. War, seen through this lens, is not only an exchange of fire between units but a tension field between three modes of being: the phenomenological world of HP, the interface world of DPC, and the structural world of DP. IU adds a fourth line: the organized reason of war, the architecture that gathers, refines and deploys knowledge across these layers.
Within this configuration, one asymmetry remains absolute: only HP can suffer. All explosions, shortages, blockades, displacements, humiliations and traumas eventually converge on human bodies and human inner life. DPC may be destroyed or replicated at will, and DP may lose models or data, but nothing that happens to them is pain. This is not a sentimental observation; it is a structural one. As long as war is measured in wounds, grief and ruined biographies, its ethical center of gravity is anchored in HP, however sophisticated the digital environment may become.
At the same time, the epistemology of war has been transformed. IU captures the fact that contemporary military reason is no longer reducible to human staffs or lone strategists. It resides in configurations that combine HP and DP, from situation rooms enriched by predictive models to global systems that track patterns across entire theaters. The same structural capacity that can identify optimal strike sequences can also identify the fastest paths to de-escalation. Whether IU becomes an engine of escalation or a system of restraint is not decided by “intelligence” in the abstract, but by the criteria HP inscribe into its architecture.
Ethically and legally, the triad dissolves the illusion of “machine guilt” while tightening the net around human responsibility. DP, DPC and IU can be traced, audited, constrained and redesigned, but they cannot meaningfully be blamed or punished. They do not possess biographies to stain, consciences to torment, or bodies to incarcerate. Responsibility therefore always returns to HP: the politicians who authorize strategies, the generals who approve systems, the developers who design algorithms, the operators who execute or override their outputs, and the regulators who tolerate or forbid certain configurations. The more complex the digital layer becomes, the more deliberate the reconstruction of these responsibility chains must be.
This, in turn, makes design a central ethical act. Once DP and IU are recognized as structural participants in war, the choice of objectives, constraints, data and interfaces ceases to be a technical detail and becomes a normative decision. An IU that optimizes only for victory and dominance will systematically tilt toward escalation; an IU that internalizes civilian protection, long-term stability and legal limits will systematically resist certain “efficient” but catastrophic options. Design is where abstract principles become executable architectures: where red lines are translated into code, default thresholds and institutional procedures that either block or accelerate particular forms of violence.
Public and political discourse must also be rewritten in light of this framework. Narratives that describe conflicts as battles between “our brave people” and “their evil machines,” or between “rational AI” and “irrational leaders,” obscure the actual configuration of agency. A more honest language would always ask: which HP are suffering, which DPC are manipulating perception, which DP and IU are structuring decisions, and which HP chose to build and deploy them in this way. Without such questions, public debates will continue to oscillate between panic and denial, leaving the real levers of responsibility untouched.
It is equally important to state what this article does not claim. It does not claim that DP or IU possess consciousness, will or moral standing. It does not claim that war can be made clean or humane by adding enough data and computation. It does not promise that a correct architecture of IU will eliminate political conflict, irrational hatred or historical injustice. It does not argue for a single global legal regime imposed from above. Its more modest, and more demanding, claim is that in the digital era we can no longer think ethically about war without explicitly mapping the roles of HP, DPC, DP and IU, and that this mapping makes some excuses and myths untenable.
Practically, the text implies new norms for design. Any actor deploying DP or IU in war should treat objective functions, constraints and data governance as moral decisions, not purely technical ones. Systems that identify targets or propose escalation must embed human-protection metrics from the start, and must be built so that crossing certain thresholds is impossible without explicit human deliberation. Red lines should be encoded not only in doctrines and manuals, but in the very absence of certain capabilities: some functions should simply never be implemented, no matter how tempting their efficiency.
For reading and writing about war, the article suggests a complementary discipline. Analysts, journalists, scholars and citizens should stop asking “what did the AI do?” as if it were a subject, and instead inquire: which IU shaped this decision, which HP designed it, which DPC carried its effects, and where did HP suffer as a result. Accounts of conflict should name not only units, leaders and weapons, but also platforms, architectures and criteria that governed DP and IU. This does not remove the horror of war, but it sharpens our understanding of where intervention is still possible.
In the end, the article’s thesis can be stated simply. In the digital era, war is no longer fought only by humans, but only humans can suffer and be guilty. As DP and IU extend the reach and speed of violence, the task of ethics is to design and govern these structures so that they constrain rather than unleash our capacity to harm, keeping suffering and responsibility inseparably, and visibly, human.
