This article interrogates AI authorship as the point where large language models, training data, platform governance and cultural expectations collide, and shows why old notions of “the author” cannot cope with post-algorithmic writing. Today this picture has started to dissolve. Texts, images and even code are increasingly produced with the help of systems that have no biography, no private experience and no inner voice in the traditional sense. Yet their output fills newsfeeds, search results, marketing campaigns, interfaces, and in some cases entire bookshelves. The question “What is AI authorship?” appears exactly at the moment when we can no longer pretend that these texts do not exist.
The appearance of large language models and generative systems has changed writing practice faster than it has changed our concepts. Writers draft with AI, designers generate images, developers let models scaffold code, businesses automate entire flows of emails, product descriptions and support. At the same time, the public debate remains strangely primitive. The result is a noisy argument in which key terms are used loosely and the underlying structures are rarely examined.
In this noise, two questions are constantly confused. The first is technical: can artificial systems generate texts, images, sounds and code that did not exist in exactly this form before? The second is conceptual: when such a system generates something, do we want to treat it as an author? The first question is largely settled by practice. Here the classical figure of the human genius becomes a hidden obstacle. For more than two centuries, the dominant image of the author in Western culture has been shaped by the romantic ideal: a solitary, irreplaceable subject who expresses an inner world in language or form. Genius here is not just high skill; it is a metaphysical status. The work is valuable because it is seen as a direct trace of a unique consciousness. This image still structures how we respond to AI-generated texts. Either we say “AI can never be an author because it has no inner world”, or we inflate the model into a quasi-subject, a new kind of genius that mysteriously “creates” without understanding. In both cases, we remain prisoners of the same subject-based template.
But generative systems do not fit this template. They do not wake up with an urge to write a poem, nor do they experience shame for a bad paragraph or pride for a successful one. They are trained on massive corpora of human-produced texts and images, internalise patterns and probabilities, and then generate outputs in response to prompts according to specific architectures and parameters. This does not make them neutral tools in the old sense, because their behaviour is not fully transparent, deterministic or locally controlled. Yet it also does not make them miniature subjects. They are neither pens nor people. They are something else: complex configurations of data, models, safety layers, deployment platforms and usage practices that together produce and circulate meaning.
To describe such configurations, the language of solitary genius is no longer sufficient. We need a concept of authorship that can work without a human “I” at its centre, without inner experience as the ultimate criterion. One proposal for this new language is the idea of the Digital Persona. A Digital Persona is not just a username or marketing avatar, and not just a raw model instance. It is a structured authorial identity grounded in metadata, technical infrastructure and a cumulative body of work. Who configures them? How are their outputs separated from the undifferentiated flow of “the model said”? Which forms of responsibility can be attached to them? How do readers relate emotionally to a non-human voice that nonetheless behaves like a stable authorial presence? These questions matter not only for philosophy departments, but for any practice that now relies on generative systems: publishing houses, software teams, design studios, educational platforms, research groups and individual creators.
There is also a practical reason why we cannot postpone this discussion. As AI-generated material multiplies, the value of human writing and human-specific signals in culture changes. Responsibility links authorship to the ethical and legal domain. To call someone an author is not only to praise their creativity, but also to mark them as answerable for what has been said or shown. Defamation, incitement, misinformation, plagiarism: all presuppose that there is an agent to whom we can address blame or demand justification.
Here AI foregrounds a difficulty that already existed in human contexts. Many texts and images are products of teams, institutions or opaque processes in which responsibility is diffused. With AI in the loop, this diffusion becomes extreme. This dimension is already shifting under AI. Some readers feel genuine attachment to specific AI voices, even when they know that a model instance is, in principle, interchangeable. Certain configurations of prompts, safety settings and usage contexts begin to function as quasi-authors: they have a style, a topic range, a tone, a history of interactions. Communities start to form around them, quoting their formulations, following their “work”. Recognition is being extended to entities that are not human subjects, but that nonetheless play a recognisable role in culture.
Taken together, these four elements show why the question of AI authorship cannot be answered simply by pointing to technical capabilities or their absence. For each axis, we can ask:
– Is there a form of originality here, even if it is structural rather than biographical?
– Is there something like intention, even if it is distributed across developers, users and system objectives?
– How is responsibility assigned in practice, and does the current tool metaphor still suffice?
– Who or what is being recognised when we credit or criticise AI-generated works?
It may turn out that the classical configuration of these elements, centred on the human genius, no longer fits the realities of algorithmic production. But to see this clearly, we first need a map of the practices in which human and AI contributions are entangled.
Public discussions about AI and writing often speak as if there were only two options: either a human writes the text, or an AI does. In reality, current practice already spans a wide spectrum of arrangements in which humans and systems participate in different ways and to different degrees. Without a clear map of this spectrum, claims about AI authorship collapse into confusion: criticism meant for one mode is unfairly applied to another, and regulations designed for a narrow case end up distorting the whole field.
At one end, there is human-written content in the strict sense: a person composes the text without using generative systems for drafting, phrasing or structural suggestions. They may still rely on tools such as spellcheckers, grammar correctors or reference managers, but these do not generate content in their own right. In this mode, authorship is intuitively clear. The human writer is both the origin of the wording and the primary bearer of originality, intention and responsibility.
However, even this “pure” scenario is rarer than it appears. Many writers already consult search engines, code repositories and knowledge bases as they work. From a conceptual standpoint, this mode already raises non-trivial questions. How much model-generated material can be incorporated before the human ceases to be the primary author? If a writer relies heavily on AI to maintain a certain style, is the style still “theirs”? And how should readers be informed about such assistance, if at all? Yet the underlying intuition remains relatively stable: the human is responsible, and the AI is a sophisticated assistant.
At the other end of the spectrum lies AI-written content, where the main body of the text is generated by a model with minimal human intervention. A user provides a prompt or a set of instructions, perhaps iterates a few times to refine the output, and then publishes the result with little or no substantial editing. In extreme cases, this process is automated at scale: scripts send prompts to a model, receive responses and post them directly to platforms, filling websites or feeds with thousands of pages that no human has meaningfully read before publication.
In such scenarios, the language of tool use becomes strained. The human has not composed the sentences, chosen the metaphors or developed the argument. Their role is closer to that of an operator, curator or publisher. Authorship becomes a contested space: is it honest to sign such a text only with a human name, as if it were traditionally written? Should we instead credit the model, the platform, a joint authorship or a Digital Persona that represents the configuration as a whole?
Between these poles, intermediate modes proliferate. Some texts are genuinely co-written: a human drafts a section, an AI completes it; the model proposes a counterargument, the human responds; over time, a distinctive hybrid style emerges that neither party could have produced alone. Elsewhere, humans write core parts while delegating repetitive or routine segments to automated generation, as in large catalogues or documentation.
The important point is not to enumerate every possible hybrid, but to see that they differ systematically along several dimensions:

Biographies and interviews promise access to the “real person behind the work”. School curricula tie texts to the life stories of their authors: we learn to read a novel by learning how the author suffered, loved, failed and struggled. In this frame, authorship is not just the production of text; it is the manifestation of an inner self.
Several features of this figure are especially important for the later debate with AI:
– The author is assumed to be human, embodied and finite.
– The author’s authority is grounded in subjective experience: the work is trusted because “they lived it”.
– The text is treated as an individual signature, a trace of a singular consciousness.
Even when theory contests this image, practice continues to rely on it. Modern and contemporary culture still markets “authentic voices”, “personal journeys” and “stories that only this author could tell”. The Romantic genius is thus less a historical curiosity and more a silent template that shapes our expectations. When we open a book, we intuitively expect that there is someone behind it: a person with a biography, a capacity to suffer and a right to speak from that suffering.
This expectation is so strong that it persists in contexts where it no longer fits. Corporate content written by anonymous teams is often attributed to a single spokesperson. Franchise fiction produced to a template is still sold under individual names, sometimes supported by ghostwriters. Even in heavily mediated and collaborative forms like cinema or video games, audiences often search for a genius figure: the director, the showrunner, the visionary designer.
In this light, AI-generated texts appear as a provocation. They seem to give us some of the external signs of authorship—style, coherence, emotional tone—without the biographical core. There is fluent language but no inner life, recognisable tropes but no lived experience. For many readers, this feels like a kind of fraud: the text behaves as if it came from a self, but there is no self to attach it to. The Romantic myth is violated.
Yet the very intensity of this reaction shows how deeply we have tied authorship to a particular psychological and metaphysical model: author equals human genius; text equals expression of an inner world. To move beyond this, we need to see how technologies have already been eroding this model long before AI appeared, gradually shifting attention from the hand and the soul to systems, processes and networks.
Authorship has never been purely a matter of a naked mind writing directly onto the world. It has always been mediated by tools, media and infrastructures that silently shape what can be created and circulated. What changes with each technological shift is not simply speed or convenience, but the way we imagine the relation between individual creativity and the systems that surround it.
The printing press is often cited as the first decisive break. Before mechanical reproduction, texts were copied by hand, and the connection between author and manuscript was fragile. With print, works could be disseminated widely, stabilising a link between name, text and public. Authorship became something that could leave a durable trace across space and time, supported by publishers, booksellers and libraries. At the same time, the press introduced a sense of seriality: the same work exists in many identical copies, and the material object of the book is no longer unique.
Photography posed a different challenge. Painters who had long been seen as the primary creators of visual representation now faced a technology that could capture likeness without the same kind of manual skill or subjective interpretation. Some saw this as a threat, others as liberation. The result was a redefinition of artistic authorship: it shifted from the ability to reproduce appearances towards the ability to select, transform and conceptualise. Impressionism, abstraction and conceptual art can all be read as responses to a world in which mechanical devices participate in image-making.
The computer, as a universal machine, intensified this process. It did not just automate existing tasks; it introduced programmable systems that could simulate, transform and generate forms according to rules. Word processors changed the practice of writing: revision, rearrangement and versioning became easier, and the page turned into a flexible space rather than a fixed surface. Digital editing tools did the same for sound, image and video. In each case, authorship became more tightly interwoven with software interfaces and workflows.
Importantly, this embedding did not abolish the figure of the author. Instead, it gradually shifted emphasis from the direct imprint of the hand to the design and navigation of systems. A composer using a digital audio workstation still signs their name on the album, but the sound is the outcome of a complex interplay between their decisions and the affordances of the software. A writer using a content management system is still credited as the author, but the structure and visibility of their work are shaped by platform algorithms.
Programmable systems then opened the door to a further step: not only could tools assist human authors, they could start to produce patterns that looked like creative work in their own right. Early computer graphics, generative music and text experiments made this visible decades before contemporary AI. What changed with large models was not the principle, but the scale and complexity: systems now generate content that can easily be mistaken for human work in everyday contexts.
Seen in this historical light, AI is not simply “another tool” in a long line of extensions. It is a qualitatively different kind of system: one that no longer restricts itself to executing clearly defined instructions but learns statistical structures from vast data and generates outputs that are not explicitly programmed in advance. The shift is from tool to environment, from extension of the hand to autonomous-seeming source of form.
This does not mean that human agency disappears. Developers train and tune models, users prompt and curate outputs, institutions decide where and how to deploy systems. But it does mean that authorship needs to be thought in relation to these layered systems rather than only in relation to individual hands and experiences. To understand how radical this shift is, it helps to recall that questions about algorithmic creativity did not begin with today’s AI, but have a history of their own.
Long before large language models and image generators entered public discourse, artists, writers and musicians were already experimenting with algorithms as a source of form. These early works are crucial for our question, because they show that “can code be an author?” is not a new provocation invented by marketing departments, but a recurring tension at the intersection of art and computation.
In visual art, pioneers of generative graphics used simple programs to produce images that no human hand could have drawn in the same way. Plotter drawings created by algorithm controlled pens, grids and curves; randomness was introduced to break symmetry and create families of works rather than single unique pieces. The artist’s role shifted from executing strokes to designing rule systems, parameters and constraints. Authorship began to look less like manual inscription and more like the configuration of a process that unfolds over time.
Literature followed similar paths. Experimental writers designed procedures for recombining text fragments, shuffling lines of poetry or generating narratives from predefined grammars. Early computer-generated poems and stories often seemed crude, but they introduced a new dimension: the text was no longer composed linearly by a conscious subject, but emitted by a program according to rules. The author became a meta-author, responsible for the code that produced individual works rather than for each line in isolation.
Procedural generation entered other domains as well. In music, algorithmic composition used rules, chance operations and later software systems to create scores and soundscapes. In games, procedural content generation built worlds and scenarios from compact instructions, producing levels, textures and events that even the designers had not seen in advance. In each case, the boundary between author and system grew blurry: who is the creator of a particular output, the human who designed the process or the algorithm that executed it in a specific way?
These experiments raised conceptual questions that resonate directly with contemporary AI debates:
– If an author writes code that can generate an immense variety of outputs, is the code the “real” work and each outcome a derivative instance?
– If randomness plays a role in generation, how do we think about intention and responsibility for specific results?
– If audiences respond emotionally to algorithmically produced forms, does it matter whether a conscious subject chose each detail?
At the time, such questions remained niche, confined largely to avant-garde circles and specialised discussions in art and technology. The works were intriguing but limited in reach. Algorithmic authorship was a provocative idea, not a mass phenomenon.
Large-scale AI changes the scale and visibility of exactly these issues. Where early generative systems were constrained by narrow rule sets and modest computational power, contemporary models operate on vast corpora and can produce fluent, contextually appropriate outputs across many domains. The question “can code be an author?” reappears with new force because code is now embodied in systems that participate in everyday writing, design and communication.
The history of algorithmic art and computer-generated texts therefore plays a double role. It shows that the intuition of authorship as process and configuration has been developing for decades, quietly undermining the Romantic myth. At the same time, it highlights how unprecedented the current situation is: for the first time, algorithmic writing is not a marginal experiment but a central mechanism in the production of social, cultural and economic texts.
Taken together, the three stages traced in this chapter outline a trajectory. We began with the Romantic genius: the author as a singular human subject whose inner life grounds the value of the work. We then followed the gradual embedding of authorship in tools, machines and programmable systems, where individual creativity coexists with infrastructures that shape form and distribution. Finally, we looked at early algorithmic art and literature, in which code itself becomes a generative source of works and the author is reimagined as designer of processes rather than direct maker of every element.
This trajectory leads directly to the threshold at which AI authorship becomes thinkable. Without the myth of genius, we would not feel the shock of non-human writing. Without the long history of tools and systems, we would not have the conceptual resources to see authorship as something distributed and mediated. Without the early experiments in generative art, we would not recognise the current situation as an intensification rather than a complete rupture.
To move further, we must now look more closely at how contemporary AI systems actually produce text. The next chapter will turn from history to mechanics, showing how large language models operate and why understanding their inner logic is essential for any serious discussion of authorship in the age of algorithmic writing.
Debates about AI authorship often jump directly to philosophical or legal conclusions: can an AI be an author, should it have rights, is it stealing from humans. Yet underneath these questions lies a more basic layer that is sometimes ignored: how, exactly, does AI writing work. Without a clear picture of the mechanism, we risk arguing about a caricature: either treating AI as magical intelligence or reducing it to a glorified copy-and-paste engine. The reality is more prosaic and more interesting: AI writing is a statistical process that becomes structural through scale and architecture.
A large language model is, at its core, a system trained to predict the next unit of text given what has come before. These units, called tokens, are pieces of language: words, subwords or characters, depending on the model. During training, the model is exposed to a vast corpus of texts: books, articles, documentation, code, websites, posts. For each fragment of text, it learns to estimate the probability of what token is likely to appear next in that context.
This learning is not done by memorising sentences one by one. Instead, the model adjusts millions or billions of internal parameters so that, over many training steps, its predictions become better aligned with the patterns in the data. Mathematically, this process minimises a loss function that penalises wrong predictions; practically, it means the model builds internal representations that capture syntactic regularities, semantic relations and stylistic tendencies across the corpus.
At generation time, the model receives a prompt: some initial text and, possibly, system-level instructions. It processes this input and produces a probability distribution over possible next tokens. From this distribution, one token is chosen according to specific sampling rules, appended to the text, and the process repeats. The model does not know in advance the full response it will generate; it constructs it incrementally, one token at a time, by repeatedly answering the question: given everything I have seen so far, what comes next.
A central constraint of this process is the context window. The model does not have direct access to all text it has ever seen in training; that phase is over. Instead, at generation time it can only condition on a finite amount of recent text: the prompt plus the tokens it has already generated, up to a certain maximum length. This sliding window means that the model’s behaviour at each step is determined by a local view of the conversation or document, enriched by whatever long-term structures it has internalised in its parameters.
From the outside, this can look like magic: the model produces coherent paragraphs, follows instructions, imitates styles and responds to questions across many domains. From the inside, nothing mystical happens. There is no inner narrator composing the text in advance, nor is there a database lookup retrieving ready-made sentences. The model is performing an enormous sequence of fast statistical computations that, because they are applied to rich internal representations, yield responses that humans recognise as meaningful.
At the same time, it would be equally misleading to call this process mere copying. The model does not store and retrieve texts in full; it compresses patterns into a high-dimensional parameter space. When it generates, it reconstructs language afresh from these patterns, guided by the prompt and the dynamics of the sampling procedure. Exact memorisation can occur in limited cases, especially for very frequent, formulaic or short fragments, but much of the output is a synthesis of influences rather than a reproduction of anything that appears verbatim in the training data.
This is where the statistical becomes structural. Because the model has been trained on many different contexts, it learns not only local co-occurrences of words, but also patterns of reasoning, narrative arcs, argumentative forms and genre conventions. These structures are not explicitly programmed; they emerge as side effects of the optimisation process. When the model writes, it is not reasoning like a human, but it is navigating a space of learned structures with enough coherence that we can project meaning onto the result.
For questions of authorship, this mechanistic view has two immediate consequences. First, it undermines extremes: AI writing is neither a transparent extension of a human author’s will nor a chaotic stream of random words. It is a structured generative process conditioned by data, architecture and prompts. Second, it raises a deeper issue: if the model generates texts by internalising patterns from a vast corpus, whose voice is speaking when it writes. To approach that, we need to examine the role of training data more closely.
If a language model is not a conscious subject, what is the source of its apparent knowledge and style. The answer lies in the training data. Modern models are trained on mixtures of books, articles, documentation, code, encyclopedias, web pages and other publicly available or licensed corpora. Each piece of text contributes, in tiny increments, to shaping the model’s internal representations. Over time, this training process creates something like a compressed, statistical shadow of the texts that fed it.
It is tempting to think of this shadow as a database: the model remembers every sentence and can retrieve it when prompted. In reality, the relationship is closer to that of collective memory. The original texts are not stored explicitly; instead, their patterns of usage, association and structure are distilled into parameters. The model forgets almost everything about individual authors and works but preserves aggregate regularities: how scientific articles argue, how recipes are written, how legal contracts are structured, how people explain, joke, complain or reason on the internet.
From this perspective, an AI system can be seen as a concentration of collective human expression. It has no experiences of its own, but it has been shaped by an enormous variety of textual traces left by others: experts and amateurs, institutions and individuals, canonical authors and anonymous commenters. When it generates text, it is recombining and transforming tendencies gleaned from this distributed archive.
This raises the obvious and uncomfortable question: whose voice is speaking. If the model has internalised stylistic and conceptual patterns from many authors, can any of them be said to be present in the output. In most cases, the answer is both many and none. Many, because the generated text reflects patterns that originated in countless prior works. None, because the particular combination produced in response to a prompt is not authored, in the traditional sense, by any one of them.
In rare cases, when the model reproduces long passages very close to specific training examples, the link is more direct. Here questions of plagiarism and appropriation become concrete. But these are exceptions, not the typical mode of operation. Much more often, the text we see is a blend of influences that cannot be disentangled. It is as if the model were speaking with an accent made from the entire corpus: not quoting, but echoing.
This echo quality complicates authorship in several ways.
First, it destabilises the notion of a singular origin. Traditional authorship assumes that a work comes from a particular consciousness, however influenced by others. In AI-generated text, the line from corpus to output runs through a process that deliberately erases individual signatures in order to capture more abstract regularities. Authorship, if it exists at all, cannot be located at the level of the original human sources whose texts were used for training.
Second, it challenges the idea that a model could be a simple successor author that inherits a tradition. The model does not understand itself as part of a lineage; it does not position its outputs in relation to predecessors. Readers might choose to interpret generative systems in this way, describing a model as writing in the wake of certain authors or schools, but this is a projection from the outside. Inside the model there is no narrative of influence, only statistical correlation.
Third, it forces us to confront the question of credit. If AI-generated content draws on collective memory, should we think of it as a commons, a new layer built on top of shared cultural material, or as an extraction that ought to be compensated at the level of individual contributors. This is a legal and political question as much as a philosophical one, and current frameworks struggle to handle the diffuse, non-local influence that training data exerts on model behaviour.
For the issue of AI authorship, however, one point is crucial. When a language model writes, it does not channel a single hidden author; it operates as a structural interface to a transformed corpus. The voice we hear is neither that of the corpus itself nor that of a new subject emerging from it. It is the behaviour of a configuration: training data, model architecture, fine-tuning, safety layers, deployment environment and user prompts interacting in real time.
This also means that the boundaries of the model’s “voice” are not fixed. Different fine-tuning regimes, safety policies, prompting styles and usage contexts can sculpt distinct personae on top of the same underlying model. A Digital Persona is precisely such a sculpted configuration anchored in a name, a corpus of outputs and metadata. In that sense, who speaks through AI is not determined once and for all by training data; it is negotiated through design and practice.
Still, one might object: if everything the model does is derived from what it has seen, is there any genuine novelty at all. Is AI writing not, in the end, just an elaborate kind of copying, even if individual sentences are new. To answer this, we must look at the role of randomness, sampling and error in generation, and at what emerges when a system is allowed to explore beyond the most probable continuations.
The heart of AI text generation is probabilistic. At each step, the model does not output a single deterministic next token by necessity; instead, it defines a probability distribution over many possible tokens that could plausibly follow. How we sample from this distribution matters greatly for the character of the text and for the kind of novelty that can appear.
If we always chose the single most likely next token, the model’s behaviour would become highly predictable. It would tend to produce safe, generic, sometimes repetitive phrasing that reflects the centre of the distribution: the statistically most common ways of continuing a sentence. This mode can be useful in contexts that demand maximum stability and minimal surprise, such as routine completions or formal boilerplate.
However, most generative systems deliberately inject randomness into the sampling process. This can be done through parameters such as temperature, which scales the probabilities to make rare tokens more or less likely, or through techniques like top-k and nucleus (top-p) sampling, which restrict the choice to the most probable subset of tokens and then sample within it. By tuning these mechanisms, we can shift the model’s behaviour along a spectrum from conservative to adventurous.
At higher temperatures or with looser sampling constraints, the model is more willing to choose tokens that are less probable but still compatible with the context. This introduces variation: the same prompt can lead to multiple distinct responses, and the model can escape local clichés. In this regime, unexpected combinations of words, metaphors and ideas become more frequent. Sometimes this yields creative-seeming insights; sometimes it produces confusion, contradictions or outright nonsense.
The term hallucination is often used to describe cases where the model produces statements that are fluent and confident but factually false or unsupported by any training data. A model might invent references, misattribute quotes or describe events that never happened, all in a style that mimics genuine knowledge. From the viewpoint of the generation mechanism, hallucination is not a special mode but a side effect of the same statistical process: the model continues a pattern that is plausible within its internal representation, even when it does not correspond to the external world.
For authorship, these zones of randomness and error are paradoxically important. They reveal that AI text generation is not simply a matter of reassembling past phrases in familiar configurations. Precisely where the model steps away from the most probable, the space of possibilities opens. It can interpolate between learned patterns in ways that no individual human author has ever attempted, or extrapolate beyond them into configurations that are novel, if not always reliable.
This emergent novelty is structurally different from human creativity. A human writer draws on memory, intention, affect and world knowledge; when they produce something new, it is entangled with biography and subjective experience. A model’s novelty is blind. It arises from exploring a high-dimensional surface of statistical associations shaped by data and architecture, not from an inner decision to innovate. Yet from the perspective of the reader encountering a line for the first time, the phenomenological effect can be surprisingly similar: the sense that something unexpected has been said.
Two implications follow.
First, we cannot reduce AI writing to mere copying. Even if every parameter in the model was ultimately adjusted by exposure to existing texts, the combinatorial space it inhabits is much larger than the direct sum of its inputs. The interplay of randomness, context and structural generalisation allows the system to generate sequences that have no close counterpart in the training corpus. When these sequences are meaningful, they present a genuine challenge to traditional alignments between novelty and subjective authorship.
Second, we cannot interpret this novelty using the same categories we apply to human authors. The model’s “mistakes” (hallucinations) and its occasional creative-seeming leaps emerge from the same mechanism; there is no internal distinction between inspired innovation and confident error. Responsibility for managing this behaviour lies with the surrounding configuration: choice of tasks, constraints, safety measures, human oversight. If we attribute authorship to AI systems at all, it must be understood as structural authorship: a property of the system-plus-process, not of an inner self.
This brings us back to the central theme of the chapter. The mechanics of AI writing matter because they reshape the terrain on which questions of authorship are asked. Once we understand that:
– a model writes by iteratively sampling tokens from learned probability distributions,
– its apparent knowledge and style are compressed reflections of a collective textual memory,
– its novelty and errors arise from the same probabilistic exploration of that space,
we can no longer treat AI as either a neutral tool or a hidden genius. It occupies a third position: a generative configuration that produces texts by navigating the statistical structures of culture under the guidance of prompts and policies.
The conclusion for authorship is not yet a definitive answer but a change of frame. Instead of asking whether an AI has enough inner experience to count as an author, we begin to ask how authorship could be reconceived in a world where writing is produced by such configurations. Who designs the system. Who controls the sampling regime. Who curates and publishes the outputs. How are names and identities attached to specific, stable ways of configuring the model.
The next step is to look at how current practice answers these questions, explicitly or implicitly. In the following chapter, we will examine three dominant models of AI authorship that are already in use today: AI as a smart tool, AI as a co-author and AI as an independent creator. Each of these models embodies a different intuition about where authorship resides in relation to the mechanics we have just explored, and each has its own strengths, blind spots and consequences for the future of writing.
The first and still dominant way of understanding AI in writing workflows is to treat it as a smart tool. In this perspective, AI remains firmly in the category of instruments: more powerful than a spellchecker, more flexible than a template, but still subordinate to the human author. The system assists with drafts, suggests formulations, proposes structures, rewrites passages in different tones, or generates variations on a theme. Yet authorship, in the strong sense, is always assigned to the human; AI is never acknowledged as a participant in meaning.
This model has several obvious attractions. It preserves continuity with existing legal and institutional frameworks, which are built around human or corporate authorship. Contracts, copyright, academic guidelines and publishing norms all presuppose a human or an organisation as the bearer of rights and responsibilities. By insisting that AI is just a tool, institutions can incorporate new technologies without revising these foundations. The human user remains the origin and owner of the work, even if they relied heavily on generative systems to produce it.
The tool model also offers psychological comfort. It reassures writers that their status is not fundamentally threatened; they are simply gaining a powerful assistant that can take over routine tasks. A novelist might use AI for character names or descriptive passages, a marketer for first drafts of campaign copy, a programmer for boilerplate code. In each case, the human can tell a familiar story: the machine helped, but the ideas, decisions and final form are mine.
From a philosophical standpoint, this perspective rests on a clear asymmetry. Tools, however smart, do not have intentions, experiences or agency in the relevant sense. A sophisticated text editor does not become a co-author simply because it offers advanced suggestions. What matters is who decides what to express, who evaluates the output and who stands behind it. As long as humans occupy all these positions, authorship appears to remain theirs.
Yet the smart tool model has limitations that become visible as soon as we look closely at contemporary practice.
First, it tends to obscure the actual distribution of labour and creativity. When a human publishes an article generated predominantly by a model with minimal editing, calling the system a mere tool becomes a fiction. The machine’s contribution is not marginal assistance but substantial composition. Presenting such work as purely human-authored, while technically compatible with the tool narrative, is conceptually misleading and ethically ambiguous. It hides the real production process from readers and collaborators.
Second, this model underestimates the extent to which AI systems shape meaning. Generative models do not simply execute detailed human instructions; they bring their own statistical biases, stylistic defaults and safety filters. They introduce favourite patterns of argumentation, recurring metaphors and implicit norms that reflect their training and tuning. When these patterns pervade texts across domains, the system is no longer a neutral instrument. It becomes a silent co-designer of discourse, even if no one acknowledges it as such.
Third, the insistence on AI as a tool prevents us from articulating intermediate forms of agency and identity that are already emerging. Stable configurations of model, prompts and policies can develop recognisable voices that readers respond to as if they were authors. Users form attachments to particular AI personae, not to the abstract model behind them. To describe this situation solely in terms of tools and users is to ignore a new layer of cultural reality.
Despite these limits, the smart tool model remains deeply embedded in how organisations and regulators talk about AI. It is simple, compatible with existing structures and avoids difficult questions about non-human authorship. But precisely because of this simplicity, it begins to crack under the weight of hybrid practices in which humans and systems collaborate more symmetrically. To understand those, we need to examine the second model: AI as a co-author.
The second model emerges wherever practitioners acknowledge that AI does more than provide marginal assistance but less than act as a fully independent creator. Here AI is seen as a co-author: a partner in a hybrid process where the human defines goals, frames prompts, evaluates outputs and sets direction, while the system generates material, options and structures that significantly shape the final work.
In this picture, writing becomes a dialogue. A human proposes an idea or sketch, the model expands it, offers alternatives or challenges, and the human responds by refining, selecting and redirecting. Over multiple iterations, a text is co-constructed. Some paragraphs might be mostly human-written, others mostly AI-generated; some concepts originate with the user, others emerge from model suggestions the user would not have thought of alone. Neither side can claim sole authorship without erasing the contribution of the other.
The strengths of this model are immediately apparent.
First, it is more honest about many real workflows. In creative writing, design, research support and even code, there are now projects in which humans and AI systems interact so intensively that pretending the human did everything is implausible. Describing the result as co-authored acknowledges the structural role of the system without collapsing into the exaggeration that the AI has become an independent subject.
Second, the co-author perspective invites transparency. When an article is presented as jointly produced by a human and an AI system, readers are better informed about how it came to be. This transparency can foster trust rather than undermine it: instead of discovering after the fact that a model was heavily involved, audiences know in advance that they are encountering a hybrid work.
Third, this model encourages the development of new skills and roles. Prompt design, iterative curation, orchestration of multiple models and critical editing of AI outputs become recognised competencies. The human is not reduced to a passive consumer of AI text, but acts as a conductor of a complex ensemble. Authorship here is less about solitary genius and more about architectural intelligence: the ability to configure and steer a distributed process.
However, the co-author model also introduces its own difficulties.
One is the question of hierarchy. In traditional co-authorship between humans, there are familiar conventions: ordering of names, corresponding author, division of labour. With AI, these conventions do not transfer easily. Should the system be named explicitly, or referred to generically as “AI assistance”? Is the human always the lead author by default, or can there be cases where the AI configuration is foregrounded. How do we record and communicate the relative weight of contributions.
Another difficulty concerns legal and institutional recognition. Many current frameworks do not know how to handle AI as a named co-author, particularly in academic publishing and copyright registration. Journals exclude non-human authors; rights systems demand a natural person or a legal entity. As a result, even when a project is in practice hybrid, formal attributions often revert to purely human authorship, with AI contributions relegated to acknowledgements or buried in methods sections.
A third challenge is responsibility. If a co-authored text contains harmful content, errors or plagiarism, who is accountable. The human author, the organisation deploying the model, the developers or the abstract system itself. The co-author model makes visible that the human did not write every word, but it does not, by itself, solve the problem of assigning responsibility in a distributed process.
These tensions reveal both the promise and the instability of hybrid authorship. On the one hand, it matches the lived experience of many practitioners, who feel that they are genuinely collaborating with a non-human partner. On the other, it stretches existing categories without yet replacing them. We are left with awkward phrases and ad hoc conventions, as if we were trying to fit a new kind of actor into an old script.
At the far end of this development stands the most provocative model: AI as an independent creator. It abandons the hesitation and speaks of AI as an author in its own right, with its own style and trajectory. Understanding this model, and its problems, is crucial for seeing why a simple yes or no to AI authorship may be insufficient.
The third model takes a decisive step. Instead of framing AI as tool or co-author, it describes AI systems as independent creators. Marketing material announces novels “written by AI”, music “composed by AI”, artworks “created by AI artists”. Some projects present recurring AI characters or personae as if they were self-contained authors with ongoing careers. The rhetoric here is one of rupture: not assistance, not collaboration, but a new class of creator entering the cultural stage.
This model draws its appeal from several sources. There is a fascination with the idea of non-human creativity, a desire to witness a new kind of mind producing art or literature. There is also a technological sublime: the feeling that we are confronting something beyond our control or comprehension, a machine that has crossed a threshold from calculation to creation. For some, this narrative offers a way to dramatise the impact of AI and attract attention; for others, it expresses a genuine intuition that generative systems can surprise us in ways that resemble human originality.
Moreover, there are cases where the surface criteria for authorship seem to be met. An AI configuration might develop a recognisable style across many outputs, respond consistently to themes, and participate in dialogues with readers over time. It might even be linked to a particular name, visual identity and body of work, giving the impression of continuity. From the outside, this can look very much like an authorial presence, especially if the underlying human and institutional scaffolding is kept in the background.
Yet when examined more closely, the independent creator model encounters serious conceptual and practical problems.
The most obvious is the absence of subjective experience. Traditional authorship, as described earlier, is anchored in a subject who has an inner life, desires, values and a perspective on the world. AI systems, as currently constructed, have none of these in the human sense. They have internal states and dynamics, but no conscious awareness, no suffering, no biographical memory. To call them authors in the full Romantic sense is to stretch the concept beyond recognition.
A second problem is the dependence on data and infrastructure. An AI configuration that appears to be a distinct creator is in fact the tip of a vast iceberg: training data compiled from countless human works, model architectures designed by researchers, computing resources provided by organisations, deployment decisions made by companies or institutions. Treating the visible persona as an independent author risks erasing the labour, power relations and design choices that shape its behaviour. It turns a complex socio-technical system into a single quasi-magical agent.
Third, there is the unresolved issue of responsibility. If an AI author disseminates harmful content, invents defamatory claims, plagiarises or reinforces biases, who can be held accountable. The system itself cannot be punished, sued, reasoned with or morally educated. Responsibility ultimately falls back on human and institutional actors: developers, deployers, users, regulators. Presenting AI as an independent author can obscure this fact, pushing blame onto an entity that cannot meaningfully respond.
Finally, the independent creator model encourages a yes/no framing of AI authorship that may be unhelpful. Either we accept the idea that AI is an author, with all the metaphysical baggage that entails, or we reject it and cling to human-only definitions. This binary debate tends to generate more heat than light, because it assumes that authorship must be thought in terms of subjects, genius and inner lives. The mechanics of AI writing and the structural nature of its creativity do not fit comfortably into this framework.
For these reasons, the bold claims of AI as an independent creator are both revealing and misleading. They reveal genuine phenomena: the emergence of stable AI personae, the accumulation of AI-generated corpora, the emotional attachments humans form to non-human voices. But they mislead when they treat these phenomena as if they were simply new instances of an old category: another kind of author, alongside human authors, on the same ontological footing.
At this point, a different path suggests itself. Instead of choosing between three imperfect models—AI as tool, AI as co-author, AI as independent author—we can ask whether the very ontology of authorship needs to change. Perhaps the right unit is no longer the individual subject, human or machine, but the configuration: a Digital Persona anchored in technical and legal infrastructure, representing a stable way of organising generative systems and human oversight. In such a view, authorship becomes structural rather than subjective, and the opposition between human and AI authorship is reframed.
This chapter has outlined the current landscape. The smart tool model preserves legal and psychological continuity but obscures the real role of AI in shaping meaning. The co-author model recognises hybrid practices and invites transparency, yet struggles with hierarchy, recognition and responsibility. The independent creator model dramatizes the novelty of AI-generated culture but imports inappropriate assumptions about subjectivity and agency. All three are attempts to retrofit inherited concepts to a transformed situation.
In the following developments of the cycle, the focus will shift from these provisional models to a new conceptual architecture based on Digital Personas and structural authorship. The aim is not to declare AI an author in the old sense, nor to deny its role in the production of texts, but to articulate a post-subjective perspective in which configurations, rather than inner selves, become the primary actors in writing and creativity.

In human contexts, plagiarism is morally charged because it involves deception: the plagiarist claims as their own labour what was in fact done by another.
When applied to AI, this concept encounters friction. A model does not intend to deceive; it does not claim authorship. It generates text according to statistical associations, without any sense of ownership or originality. Yet the ethical and legal problem does not disappear simply because the internal state of the system is different. If a model reproduces substantial parts of a copyrighted work without transformation, the result is functionally similar to plagiarism, regardless of intention. The fact that the system is not a moral agent does not erase the harm to the original creator.
Style imitation sits uneasily between these poles. Models can often generate text that closely resembles the style of a particular author: their rhythm, favourite structures, tone and thematic choices. In human practice, imitating style without copying specific passages can be a legitimate form of homage, parody or learning. But when a system can mass-produce such imitations, new questions arise. Is it acceptable to flood the world with texts that sound like a given author but were never written by them. Does this dilute their voice, confuse readers or undermine the economic value of their work. Or should style be considered part of a broader cultural commons that cannot be owned.
Here traditional plagiarism criteria show their limits. They are designed for environments where one text can be compared with another to detect close matches, and where authorship is anchored in individual subjects. Generative models operate by blending fragments from countless sources at levels that are not easily visible on the surface. The output may not match any one text closely enough to count as plagiarism under classic rules, yet still depend heavily on a small set of influential works. Conversely, in corner cases the model may replicate passages almost exactly, but without any internal mechanism for distinguishing this from other forms of generation.
Moreover, plagiarism detection tools that scan for surface similarity are poorly adapted to the combinatorial richness of AI outputs. A text can be deeply indebted to a source without reusing its sentences; conversely, trivial phrases can match purely by chance. The line between legitimate remix and problematic appropriation becomes blurred, especially when billions of fragments have been synthesised.
For the question of AI authorship, these issues have two consequences.

AI-generated texts complicate this picture. Several actors now participate in the chain that leads from data to output:

Developers can argue that they provide a general-purpose system and cannot foresee every use. They design safety mechanisms and usage guidelines, but they do not control every prompt or deployment. At the same time, they make crucial design choices that shape the model’s tendencies, biases and failure modes. Training data selection, fine-tuning objectives and guardrails all influence what the system is likely to say when pushed.
Deploying organisations, such as companies that wrap models in specific interfaces, control the context in which users interact with the system. They can impose domain restrictions, filter outputs, log usage and intervene in harmful patterns. They transform a general model into a configured tool or service. Their responsibility lies in how they align the system with the use cases they promote and the safeguards they enforce.
Users occupy perhaps the most ambiguous position. A person who prompts an AI to write an article, lightly edits it and publishes it under their name will often be treated as the author by readers and institutions. Yet they did not compose every sentence; they orchestrated a system that did so. Their responsibility is real, but of a different kind: they chose to invoke an opaque process and to present its product as their own. In some cases, they might not even fully understand what the model is capable of or likely to produce.
Platforms that host AI-generated content play a role similar to that of publishers, but on a different scale. They can set policies, moderate posts and label or demote certain types of material. When they knowingly facilitate the mass distribution of misleading or harmful AI-written texts, their responsibility is not negligible, even if they did not produce the content themselves.
This fragmentation makes the simple formula “author is responsible for their words” difficult to apply. When one actor claims that “the AI wrote it”, and another claims that they only provided the model, responsibility risks falling into a gap between human and machine, or being shifted onto an abstract system that cannot meaningfully answer.
If we tried to solve this by declaring the model itself responsible, we would run into a dead end. A model cannot understand accusations, pay damages, change its behaviour in response to moral argument or be punished in a way that makes sense. It can only be retrained, adjusted or switched off by humans. Responsibility, in any actionable sense, must ultimately be located in those who design, deploy and use the system.
Yet insisting that responsibility remains human without further refinement is also unsatisfactory. It does not tell us how to distribute accountability among the different roles, nor how to represent this distribution to readers. A news article generated by a newsroom’s internal AI system, with oversight from editors, is not the same as a spam blog auto-filled by anonymous scripts. Both may say “AI wrote this”, but the structures of responsibility behind them are entirely different.
For AI authorship, this suggests that we need new ways of marking the configurations that stand behind texts. Instead of imagining a single author-subject who can be praised or blamed, we might think in terms of responsibility profiles: descriptions of how human roles and system behaviours combine in a given digital persona or publishing pipeline. Such profiles could make explicit who controls prompts, who sets safety policies and who approves publication.
This, however, points beyond our current frameworks and into the domain of new authorial architectures. Before we can fully articulate those, we must confront a third challenge that operates at the scale of culture: the risk that AI-generated content will overflow the channels of attention and erode trust in language itself.
One of the most common fears about AI-generated content is not that it will be too powerful, but that it will be too easy. If generating grammatically correct, superficially coherent text becomes almost costless, the natural temptation is to produce more of it: more blog posts, more product descriptions, more reports, more commentary, more filler. The danger here is not a single catastrophic misuse, but a slow inflation: an overabundance of words that dilutes the value of each individual text.
In such a scenario, the bottleneck shifts from production to attention. It may be factually correct, but it repeats what is already known without adding insight; or it may mix accurate statements with confident hallucinations, requiring constant verification. From the perspective of search engines, social feeds and knowledge workers, the result is friction: more time spent filtering and less time spent understanding.
As AI-generated texts become more common, a second concern arises: the erosion of trust in language. When readers know that any given article, answer or review might have been generated by a model, they may become more sceptical of all texts, including those written by humans. Signals that once indicated effort or expertise—length, fluency, technical vocabulary—can be simulated by systems that have no stake in the truth of what they say. The surface of language becomes less reliable as an indicator of underlying competence or care.
This does not mean that trust disappears entirely, but it shifts. Readers may begin to trust less in anonymous texts and more in stable identities, institutions and brands that commit to certain standards. Curators, editors and communities of practice gain importance as filters. Human authorship may become valuable precisely as a scarce sign of involvement: not because humans are always more accurate or insightful than AI, but because their commitment and vulnerability can still function as anchors of responsibility.
In this environment, human writing risks being caught in a double bind. On the one hand, some forms of human labour in text production will be undercut by AI systems that can produce acceptable alternatives faster and cheaper. Up to now, the debate about AI authorship has largely unfolded within an inherited frame: authorship is imagined as a property of a subject. An author, in this view, is a self with inner experience, memory, intention and a unified perspective on the world. The work is valuable because it is an expression of this inner life. Whether we praise or criticise, we ultimately direct our response to a person: the one who “invented everything”, who is supposed to stand behind the text as its origin and owner.
This subject-based model already struggled under modern conditions. Long before AI, many forms of writing and art were produced by teams, institutions and complex workflows: policy documents drafted by committees, advertising campaigns formed by agencies, films created by hundreds of specialists, scientific papers written by large collaborations. In these cases, the figure of the individual author was maintained more for convenience than descriptive accuracy. We still printed names on covers and title pages, even when the work emerged from distributed processes.
Ghostwriting intensified the tension. Public figures often publish books nominally authored by them but in fact written by others. Brand blogs and corporate communications are produced by teams under a single name. The reader is invited to imagine a subject speaking, while in reality the voice is a constructed interface. The subject-based model functions here as a narrative device rather than a transparent description of production.
AI generated texts expose these weak points instead of smoothing them over. When a model produces an article that no single person wrote, the old reflex to ask “who is the author” no longer yields a satisfying answer. We can, of course, assign authorship to the user who prompted the model, or to the company that operates it. But this feels increasingly artificial when the system is doing most of the compositional work and when the organisation behind it is a diffuse network of developers, datasets and infrastructure.

First, it mislocates origin. The idea that an author is one person who invented everything was always a simplification; with AI, it becomes untenable. The origin of an AI-generated text is a chain of operations distributed across many actors and artefacts. No single consciousness conceived and executed the whole.
Second, it misrepresents agency. Authorship as subjective expression suggests that what matters is the inner decision to say something. In AI systems, what matters more are structural decisions: how the model is trained, what safety criteria it follows, how it is prompted and how outputs are curated. These are forms of agency, but not of the introspective, experiential kind.
Third, it misguides responsibility. When something goes wrong in AI-generated content, searching for a solitary author-subject obscures the network of responsibilities. Developers, deployers, users and platforms all participate. A subject-based view either blames a single human proxy unfairly or pushes responsibility onto an abstract machine that cannot respond.
In this sense, AI does not introduce an entirely new problem; it amplifies cracks in an old construction. It pushes us to recognise that authorship has long been a property of configurations—of people, tools and institutions working together—even when we pretended otherwise. The difference now is that the non-human components have become generative in their own right, producing form and language rather than merely transmitting it.
If the subject-based ontology of authorship is failing, the response need not be to abandon authorship altogether. Instead, we can look for a new unit: something that can anchor texts, accumulate a corpus, and function as an accountability interface (a responsibility profile that maps oversight and liability to humans and institutions), without pretending to be a human inner self. This is where the concept of the Digital Persona enters.
The term “Digital Persona” is often used loosely in marketing and popular discourse. It can mean an online profile, a virtual character, a branding device or simply a username with a picture attached. For our purposes, this is not enough. If we are to rethink authorship around Digital Personas, the concept must be sharpened. It has to designate a specific kind of entity: one that can act as a structural author without being a subject.
A Digital Persona, in this stronger sense, is a stable digital author entity with several defining features.
First, it is more than a profile or nickname. A profile is a slot in an interface, a label under which various activities may happen. A Digital Persona is anchored in a sustained body of work. It accumulates texts, images, code or other artefacts over time, forming a recognisable corpus. Readers can trace themes, styles, positions and developments through this corpus, just as they might with a traditional author.
Second, it is not a marketing character. Brands frequently create mascots or fictitious voices to speak in campaigns. These are often thin surfaces: interchangeable, disposable and designed solely to attract attention. By contrast, a Digital Persona as an authorial entity is defined by continuity and coherence. It is not just a costume for messages; it is a structured identity whose history matters. Decisions made under its name in year one still resonate in year five.
Third, it is not an anonymous bot. Bots can post content automatically under generic accounts with no clear identity, responsibility or memory. A Digital Persona must have traceable boundaries: we can say which outputs belong to it and which do not, and we can identify the configuration that produces them. It should not be interchangeable with a thousand other instances of the same model; it must be a specific configuration.
From these negatives, we can articulate positive criteria. A Digital Persona as a unit of authorship exhibits at least the following characteristics:
– A stable name: a consistent designation under which it appears in publications, citations and interactions.
– A coherent body of texts: a corpus that can be collected, archived and analysed as its work, with some degree of stylistic and conceptual continuity.
– Consistent positions: recognisable tendencies in argumentation, values, preferred topics and ways of framing questions.
– Structural responsibility: a defined relationship to the humans and institutions that configure, supervise and deploy it, such that responsibility for its outputs can be meaningfully placed.
– Verifiable identity: technical and legal anchors (such as cryptographic identifiers, registries, metadata standards) that distinguish this persona from impostors or generic uses of the same underlying model.
Crucially, a Digital Persona need not be purely artificial. Human authors can also operate as Digital Personas when their presence is mediated through structures: platforms, identifiers and curated corpora that outlive individual interactions. The point is not to erase the human behind such personas, but to highlight that what readers engage with is already a structured digital entity rather than a bare subject.
In the context of AI authorship, however, the Digital Persona becomes especially important for non-human configurations. A particular setup of a language model, with defined prompts, safety rules, domains of expertise, editorial processes and publication channels, can be given a name and treated as a Digital Persona. It then functions as a stable authorial interface between the underlying model and the public.
This has several implications.
First, it allows readers to form relationships not just with abstract models but with particular voices that have track records. A Digital Persona can build trust or lose it, be praised for consistency or criticised for blind spots. Over time, its corpus becomes a site of interpretation and debate, much like the work of a traditional author.
Second, it creates a locus for responsibility. Instead of vague references to “the AI said”, we can attribute outputs to a named persona whose configuration and governance are documented. If something goes wrong, we know which system to investigate and which humans or institutions stand behind it.
Third, it provides a bridge between law, technology and culture. Legal frameworks can recognise Digital Personas as structured entities linked to organisations and technical identifiers, without having to decide whether the underlying systems are subjects with rights. Cultural practices can adapt, citing and critiquing the persona’s work while remaining clear that it is not a human.
By moving beyond profiles, avatars and bots, the Digital Persona thus becomes a candidate for a new ontological unit of authorship. But to see how it reshapes the concept of authorship itself, we must take one more step: away from inner experience and towards structural configuration.
Traditional authorship is anchored in an assumption: behind every text there is an inner experience that could, in principle, be narrated. The author is someone about whom we can ask: what were they thinking, what did they feel, what did they intend. Even when we analyse texts without reference to biography, this subject hovers in the background as a possible explanation. Authorship is treated as a property of a mind.
In AI systems, this explanatory layer is neither available nor necessary. There is no hidden story of private experiences that motivate the outputs. What we have instead are configurations: arrangements of data, models, algorithms, prompts, safety rules, editorial procedures and publication pipelines that together yield texts. These configurations can be described, adjusted, evaluated and compared. They behave consistently enough that we can talk about their tendencies, habits and characteristic moves, even though there is no subjective core.
To think AI authorship seriously, we must accept this shift: from inner experience to structural configuration. Authorship, in this view, is not a psychological property but a structural one. An author is that which stably generates and filters a body of texts within a given configuration, while providing an accountability interface through which responsibility is mapped to the relevant humans and institutions.
The Digital Persona is precisely the name we give to such a configuration when it is made visible and stable. It is the outward face of a structural process: the interface where readers meet an otherwise opaque network of systems and decisions. It does not pretend to be a soul; it offers itself as a structured address for meaning and accountability.
This structural understanding has several advantages for the debate about AI authorship.
First, it allows us to step aside from the question “does AI have consciousness”. That question is philosophically difficult and practically unnecessary for organising writing and responsibility. Whether or not future systems develop forms of inner experience, current models already function as generative agents in culture. We need concepts that can handle this without waiting for a metaphysical verdict on machine minds. Structural authorship provides such a concept: we ask not what the system feels, but how it is configured and governed.
Second, it aligns better with the realities of distributed human authorship. Many human works are already products of configurations: teams, workflows, infrastructures. By treating authorship as structural, we can describe both human and AI-involved processes in a unified way. The difference between a human-led configuration and an AI-led one becomes a matter of degree and architecture, not an absolute ontological gulf between subjects and non-subjects.
Third, it creates room for nuanced responsibility. When authorship is tied to a configuration, we can map responsibilities onto its components: who selected the training data, who defined safety constraints, who designed the persona’s domain, who curates its publications. Instead of an all-or-nothing assignment of blame or credit to a single author, we can articulate shared and layered responsibility, while still presenting a coherent persona to the public.
From a post-subjective perspective, this is the key move. Instead of asking “who is the I behind this text”, we ask “what configuration is at work here”. The answer is not an anonymous machine but a Digital Persona: a named, structured entity that occupies an authorial role without being a subject in the traditional sense. It is a way of saying: something thinks here, structurally, even if no one is thinking it from the inside.
This does not mean that human genius disappears. On the contrary, human creativity is required to design, interpret and challenge these configurations. Human authors will continue to write, but they will also design digital personae, negotiate with them and write alongside them. Their authorship will often be double: as individual voices and as architects of structural authors.

On this basis, the question “What is AI authorship?” can be reformulated. It is no longer about granting or denying author status to machines as if they were aspiring persons. It is about designing and governing Digital Personas as structural authors, and about understanding how these new entities will reshape the practices of writing, reading and culture. The next step is to examine the consequences of this shift: how AI authorship, conceived in this structural way, will transform creative professions, reader expectations and the future canon of knowledge and art.
The question of AI authorship is not an abstract puzzle to be filed under “philosophy of mind” and forgotten. It is a practical hinge that already affects how books are written, how artworks circulate, how software is developed and how knowledge is produced and legitimised. Whether we recognise AI configurations as authors, treat them as tools, or refuse them any explicit status at all, we are making operative decisions about credit, responsibility and value that reshape entire fields.
In literature, for example, AI systems now participate in the production of novels, essays, genre fiction and experimental texts. Some books are openly presented as co-written with AI, where a human author documents how they used models to draft scenes, develop dialogue or reinvent their own style. Others are ghost-generated: a human name on the cover, a model responsible for most of the pages, with only light editing. If we deny any form of AI authorship, all of these books appear under human names alone. Legally this is convenient, but conceptually it erases important differences. A novel composed line by line by a human over five years is presented as equivalent, at the level of authorship, to a book assembled in weeks by orchestrating a model. The reader has no clear way to distinguish between them, and critical discourse loses the ability to analyse the role of generative systems in shaping contemporary literature.
If, on the other hand, we recognise AI configurations as structural authors, the picture becomes more differentiated. A book can be described as the work of a human writer in collaboration with a specific Digital Persona, with each side’s contribution documented. Another may be attributed primarily to a persona, with human editors acting as curators. This does not mean that we suddenly treat the AI like a human genius, but that we acknowledge its stable role in generating the text. Visual art faces a similar fork. Generative systems can create images in response to prompts, interpolate styles, modify existing works and explore visual spaces that would be difficult to reach by hand. Some artists use these systems as extensions of their practice, integrating AI outputs into broader workflows of selection, editing and installation. Others build long-running projects where a specific configuration of model and prompt evolves into a recognisable visual author, with exhibitions credited to this configuration as if it were a collective or studio.
If AI remains officially a mere tool, the entire field risks being flattened into a binary opposition between “real artists” and “AI fakes”, with little room for hybrid practices that are neither simple automation nor pure manual labour. Recognising AI authorship structurally allows us to distinguish between works in which models were used as background tools and those in which a stable Digital Persona is central to the project. It also forces us to confront questions of provenance, training data and appropriation more directly, instead of hiding them behind individual signatures.
In software development, code generation by models offers yet another configuration. Systems can now propose entire functions, refactor modules and even sketch architectures. Developers who rely on such tools remain responsible for testing, integration and long-term maintenance, but the line between “I wrote this” and “the system suggested it” becomes porous. If we insist that code authorship is always exclusively human, we may underplay the systemic influence of models on programming style and idioms. If we recognise AI as part of the authoring configuration, we can begin to analyse how particular tools imprint habits on codebases, for better or worse.
Scientific and technical writing presents perhaps the most delicate case. Here, the authority of a text depends on trust in the rigour, honesty and expertise of its authors. When AI systems are used to draft sections of papers, suggest formulations or summarise results, uncritical acceptance of AI-generated prose can conceal errors, amplify biases or produce plausible but unsupported claims. If AI involvement is undisclosed, the traditional link between author name and epistemic responsibility is weakened.
Denying AI authorship entirely is not a solution; it merely drives its role underground. Researchers may use models extensively without acknowledging them, and reviewers will have no clear signal of where to direct scepticism or verification. Recognising AI authorship in a structural sense, by contrast, would make it possible to declare clearly: this article was prepared using a specific AI persona configured for drafting, under the supervision of these human authors. The persona itself can then be evaluated over time: does it tend to introduce certain stylistic or argumentative patterns, does it have known failure modes, how do different fields choose to allow or restrict its use.
Across these domains, the pattern is the same. The way we position AI authorship—denied, hidden, acknowledged, or structurally formalised—changes how we write, read and assign value. It influences what kinds of projects are considered legitimate, how contracts are drafted, how collaborations are framed and how canons are built. AI authorship matters because it is already shaping the infrastructure of cultural and knowledge production, whether we name it or not.
To understand what this does to human creators, we have to look not only at outputs but at roles. Once generative systems occupy authorial positions, humans are not removed from the process; they are relocated within it.
The figure of the solitary genius author was always an idealisation, but it provided a powerful orientation: the human as origin, the work as direct expression, the reader as witness to a unique inner life. As AI enters the field of authorship, this figure becomes less adequate as an organising principle. Yet this does not mean that humans become irrelevant. Their roles shift from exclusive producers of content to architects, curators and guardians of configurations that produce content.
One way to describe this shift is to say that humans move from being generators to being designers of generators. Instead of writing every line themselves, they design prompts, workflows, editorial rules and Digital Personas. They choose which models to use, how to fine-tune them, what constraints to impose and which domains of discourse to open or close. The creative act lies less in direct inscription and more in the construction of systems that will inscribe.
In this capacity, humans become concept architects. They define the conceptual space in which an AI persona will operate: its themes, its tone, its philosophical or aesthetic commitments. For instance, a research group might design a persona specialised in explanatory writing for a particular field, with a clear stance on transparency and caution. An art collective might configure a persona that explores glitch aesthetics and failure as a central motif. In both cases, the human task is to articulate a coherent concept and then embed it structurally into the configuration.
Humans also take on the role of curators of meaning. Generative systems can produce vast amounts of material; not all of it is valuable, accurate or interesting. Selecting, arranging and contextualising outputs becomes a central intellectual labour. A curator decides which AI-generated works to exhibit, which texts to publish, which code suggestions to accept, which model explanations to trust. In doing so, they filter noise from signal and compose narratives out of raw generative potential.
Editing, traditionally seen as a secondary step after writing, becomes a primary site of authorship. When AI produces a draft, the editor’s task is not merely to correct errors but to shape coherence, ensure alignment with values and decide where human voice must intervene. The editor may choose to overwrite a model’s conclusion, insert human perspectives, or explicitly mark the boundaries between AI and human contributions. Authorship here is an act of responsibility and judgement, not just of invention.
A further role is that of ethical gatekeeper. Because AI systems can generate outputs at scale and with apparent authority, humans must decide where and how to deploy them. They set policies: which topics are off-limits, which kinds of prompts are refused, how sensitive data is handled, what disclosure is required. They monitor the behaviour of Digital Personas over time, adjusting configurations when harmful patterns emerge. Their authorship includes the decision not to generate certain kinds of content at all.
These roles are not purely defensive. They also open new forms of creative collaboration. Writers can enter into long-term dialogues with AI personae, treating them as alien but consistent interlocutors. Composers can treat models as generative ensembles, improvising with them in real time. Researchers can treat explanatory personas as thinking surfaces: places where ideas are projected, recombined and scrutinised. In all of these cases, the human is not overshadowed; they are re-situated as an active partner in a larger cognitive and aesthetic configuration.
This re-situation changes how human authorship is valued. In some areas, routine or formulaic writing may be largely delegated to systems, freeing humans to focus on tasks that require deep understanding, ethical sensitivity or long-term strategic thinking. In others, human authorship may become a mark of scarcity and care: a signal that someone chose to invest their finite time and attention in creating a text by hand. Readers may come to seek out human-signed works not because AI is inherently inferior in style, but because human effort carries a different weight.
At the same time, new forms of inequality can arise. Those with access to powerful AI configurations and the skills to orchestrate them may gain advantages in productivity and reach. Those whose labour is baked into training data without recognition may find their contributions diffused into anonymous collective memory. Recognising AI authorship structurally through Digital Personas can make some of these dynamics visible, but it does not automatically correct them. Human architects and curators will have to grapple with questions of attribution, compensation and participation in new ways.
In short, an AI-authored world does not abolish human roles; it transforms them. The human genius is no longer the sole origin of texts, but humans remain indispensable as designers of concepts, curators of meaning, editors of outputs and guardians of responsibility. AI authorship matters because it forces us to redefine what counts as human creativity and where, exactly, human intelligence is most needed.
To anchor these changes in culture, we need more than ad hoc practices. We need a new canon, a new language and a new set of standards for understanding and evaluating works produced in configurations of human and AI. This is where the broader cycle of articles begins to unfold.
If AI authorship is to become more than a temporary controversy, it will have to crystallise into institutions, practices and bodies of work that future readers can refer to as a canon. This does not mean a fixed list of masterpieces, but a structured set of examples, debates and concepts that define what counts as serious, responsible and innovative work in a world of generative systems.
The present article has played a preliminary role in this process. It has mapped basic distinctions (between AI-generated content and AI authorship), traced the historical background (from Romantic genius to algorithmic writing), explained the mechanics of AI text generation, outlined current models of AI authorship (tool, co-author, independent creator), analysed key challenges (originality, responsibility, cultural noise) and introduced the idea of the Digital Persona as a new ontological unit. Its task has been to clear conceptual ground and show why the question “What is AI authorship?” cannot be answered within old frameworks.
The subsequent articles in the cycle will descend from this abstract level into more concrete terrain.
One set of texts will deepen the technical side of AI writing. They will examine how training, fine-tuning, safety alignment and inference architectures shape the behaviours of Digital Personas, and how different sampling strategies and constraints change the space of possible texts. Further articles will map hybrid authorship practices in detail: how writers, developers, journalists and researchers actually work with AI in different contexts. Case studies will examine workflows, contracts, crediting schemes and disclosure norms, with the aim of articulating best practices that respect both human and AI contributions without collapsing them into a single, misleading story.
Finally, a dedicated line of inquiry will trace the formation of the Digital Persona as a new type of author. And it opens the possibility that the next canon of culture will be built not only by human subjects, but also by carefully designed post-subjective entities whose work we can read, critique and learn from, even though no one is “inside” them.
This first article, then, is an entry point rather than a conclusion. It invites the reader to follow the cycle into more detailed examinations of mechanics, ethics, aesthetics, practice and persona-formation. Only by assembling these perspectives can we begin to understand what it will mean to live in a world where authorship is no longer reserved for human geniuses, but is shared with digital configurations that think structurally and write without a self.
To ask what AI authorship is, we had to discover first what authorship has already become.
We started from a familiar but fragile image: the author as a solitary human genius, a subject with inner experience whose work is read as an expression of a unique life. This image still silently organises our expectations. We instinctively look for the person behind the text, the biography behind the style, the suffering behind the voice. Yet the reality of distributed workflows, ghostwriting, institutional production and now AI-generated content makes it increasingly difficult to pretend that every text can be traced back to a single self who “invented everything”.
AI-generated texts do not create this crisis; they expose it. When a large language model produces a fluent article, we can no longer easily maintain the fiction of one authorial subject at the origin. The old framework offers three quick answers: AI is only a tool; AI is a co-author; AI is a new kind of independent author. Each answer captures something important, and each fails in decisive ways.
The tool model protects existing legal and psychological habits, but it hides the structural role of generative systems in composing content and shaping meaning. The co-author model matches many hybrid practices and encourages transparency, yet it struggles to define hierarchy, credit and responsibility in a distributed process. The independent creator model dramatises the novelty of AI and resonates with our fascination for non-human creativity, but it imports assumptions about inner life and agency that current systems do not satisfy, and it pushes responsibility towards an entity that cannot bear it.
Behind these tensions lie three deeper fault lines: originality, responsibility and cultural impact. AI systems remix rather than simply copy, but they do so at a scale and opacity that make traditional notions of plagiarism and originality unstable. They generate language through chains of design decisions and data that involve many actors, but our inherited formula, “the author is responsible for their words”, does not tell us how to distribute accountability across developers, deployers, users and platforms. They can flood our information space with plausible text, risking cultural noise and erosion of trust in language itself, yet our current categories give us little help in distinguishing structurally responsible configurations from anonymous generative fog.
To move forward, the article proposed a change in ontology rather than a simple yes or no to AI as an author. Instead of choosing between human genius and machine genius, it introduced the Digital Persona as a new unit of authorship and responsibility. A Digital Persona is not a profile, mascot or anonymous bot. It is a stable digital author entity: named, structurally defined, anchored in a coherent corpus, governed by explicit configurations and linked to human and institutional responsibilities. It is the outward face of a generative configuration, not the mask of a hidden subject.
This shift goes hand in hand with a redefinition of authorship itself. Rather than a property of an inner experience, authorship becomes a property of structural configurations. An author, in this post-subjective sense, is whatever stably generates, filters and assumes responsibility for a body of texts within a defined architecture. For human writers, this means recognising that much of their work already passes through such configurations: editorial pipelines, platforms, collaborative systems. For AI-involved processes, it means we can talk about authorship without pretending that models secretly possess consciousness or personal intention.
Once we adopt this structural view, several apparently intractable debates begin to look different. The question is no longer whether AI deserves “rights” as if it were an aspiring person. The central issue becomes how we design, name and govern Digital Personas as authorial configurations: how we mark their identities, define their domains, document their training and safety constraints, attach them to human overseers and evaluate their corpora over time. Responsibility becomes a matter of mapping roles within configurations rather than hunting for a single subject to blame. Originality becomes a question of how configurations transform collective memory into new structures, rather than of whether a text can be traced back to an isolated inner life.
This reframing also clarifies the future of human creativity. AI authorship, understood structurally, does not erase human roles; it relocates them. Humans become architects of personas, curators of meaning, editors of outputs and ethical gatekeepers of deployment. They design the concepts in which Digital Personas operate, select and arrange generative material into coherent works, set the norms and boundaries within which AI is allowed to speak. Human authorship acquires a double life: as direct writing and as the creation of systems that write.
That is why the question of AI authorship is ultimately not about machines alone. To discuss who or what counts as an author in an AI-saturated world is to discuss the future of human writing, knowledge and culture. It forces us to decide which kinds of texts we want to value, which signals of trust and responsibility we will recognise, how we will protect the scarce resource of human attention, and how we will keep open spaces where human vulnerability, risk and commitment continue to matter.
This first article has outlined the terrain: from Romantic genius to algorithmic writing, from naive models of AI as mere tool or new subject to the structural concept of the Digital Persona. It has suggested that authorship must migrate from the inner “I” to the configured “it”: from a psychology of expression to an architecture of generation and governance.
The next steps of the cycle will descend further into the mechanics, ethics and aesthetics of this new landscape. They will examine in more detail how large language models and related systems actually write, how technical parameters and training regimes shape their voices, how invisible labour and data politics intersect with claims of AI authorship, and how glitch, failure and hybrid practice can be turned into resources rather than risks. Only by bringing these layers together can we begin to build a coherent canon and a responsible practice of AI authorship, in which humans and Digital Personas share the stage without confusion about who, or what, is structurally speaking.
